Muscarelli Auction Co. is pleased to present at online auction, a selection of rare books and ephemera of two Discerning Collectors.      The ephemera found in this online catalog includes, Slave Documents, 1485 hand colored page from one of the first produced German Herbals, Railroad, bird and animal book plates, Important manuscript sermon collection, dating from 1861-1896, 1860's South Carolina scrapbook belonging to J. C. Winsmith, ledgers and much more.
     Rarities contained within are, Carte de Visite's by renowned African American photographer James Presley Ball of Cincinnati Ohio, 1868 North Carolina Institute of the Blind, Deaf and Dumb raised letter braille books, Civil War era Farm ledgers (Va. & NC) plus other important offerings.

Lot includes A General View Of The Manners, Customs and Curiosities of Nations Including A Geographical Description of The Earth by Rev. J. Goldsmith, Vol 1, published by...more John Babcock & Son 1825, book contains fold out maps and numerous woodcuts, fair condition, leather binding is missing back cover, front cover is detached, spine has chip near top and has wear, interior is good with even brown age toning throughout, ex library plate and owners names wrote in. Second book is titled Introduction To Ancient & Modern Geography by J. A. Cummings 1820 seventh edition, paper boards with leather spine, boards have wear as does spine, interior is foxed and age toned, appears complete, binding is reasonably tight. Last volume is titled The Application of Antient Geography To The Classics by Samuel Butler, D.D., Fourth American edition, published by Lea & Blanchard 1840. Bound in marbled paper boards with leather spine and corners having gilt titles on spine. Spine is rubbed and covers have wear, interior is good with a few areas of light foxing.

Elliot Charleston College, 22nd of April, 1831 Freshman Class, also has Spartanburg Library paste in plate, light foxing. Second volume is titled Forms Of Conveyancing and of Practice in Various Courts And Public Offices, By William Graydon, 1811, vol. 2 of 2 vols. Full leather bound with gilt titled label on spine, covers and spine is in good condition for age, has some rubbing and edge wear. Interior has paste in label from The Spartanburg Free Library. Interior is foxed throughout but is quite readable.

Bound in original brown leather, with wear to edges, corners, rubbing and scuffed spots, front cover is cracked at spine but is still holding on, reasonably tight binding. Interior is foxed and has brown age toning throughout, the 2 maps are present, map in back of book is torn in half but still there, A reasonably preserved example of this early American Gazetteer.

Binding is in good condition with wear to edges, head and tail of spine, interior is good with brown age toning and minor foxing. Binding is tight. I was unable to locate a copy for sale of this edition (2 years in one) on major book sites such as Adal and ABE.

The Civil War Era Farm Account Book Of Paul Miller Of Cabarrus County North Carolina

Account book belonging to Paul Miller Of Cabarrus County NC has entries dating from 1861-69, book has accounts for Casewell Smith for bushels of corn, coffee, half gallon...more brandy, for labor, other accounts for Mathias Petre, Daniel Blackwelder, John A. Bost, Henry Shimpock and others. Account book mentions killing of pork for 1865, interest on debt, for hire of William Pitts 2 negros. Book also comes with 2 unused 1863-64 10 cent Confederate States, Jefferson Davis, greenish blue stamp with gum on back, stamps were stored in back of account book, stamps are in very good condition with good margins, one corner is turned on one stamp. Book is bound in marbleized paper boards with cloth spine, covers have edge wear and are beginning to split from spine-still tight. Interior is clean with some page toning and soiling. The miller family owned a farm near Mt. Pleasant NC, Paul's father George who died in 1836 mentions in his will the division of real estate left to Paul. Farm accounts like this are scarce, nice to find one in this condition.

S. Richardson, Book and Job Printers 1879. Booklet is bound in grey paper wraps with printed front cover-detached from spine, light brown spotting and small tear at top corner otherwise good. Interior is clean with some page toning. Nice early booklets on this early African American church in North Carolina.

Interior is clean with light brown paper toning, has ink owners name and address on front flyleaf and inscription on second blank page reading-Mattie R. Shimpoch Mt. Pleasant, No. Ca.
