Navajo Carico Lake Turquoise & Squash Blossom 1940

This is an outstanding heavy sterling silver and Carico Lake Turquoise squash blossom from a master Navajo Native American Indian silversmith. The squash blossom dates to circa 1940-50’s and shows a nice even patina. The piece is strung on a sterling silver chain, a true attribute of its early age, and a double strand of large concho beads, ten blossoms, and a large najo squash pendant. The naja squash has a heavy wide square curved sterling silver construction with heavy bezel sterling silver settings showing a leaf or feather pattern along with six polished cabochons of gem high quality turquoise from the Carico Lake Mine. The Carico Lake Turquoise in this piece, being represented by a total of sixteen stones, has a medium green coloring and is truly a high quality representation of turquoise from the Carico Lake Mine. The piece dates to the circa 1940’s to 1950’s and has an outstanding high quality craftsmanship with a total of 116 hand formed sterling silver concho beads with a center median running around the entire body of each bead strung on a braided silver chain with heavy silver large blossom beads and very heavy made naja squash pendant. Overall the piece shows a total weight of _. The necklace measures overall 23 inches long across the strand and hangs 14 inches long when the strands are clasped. The blossoms are approximately 2 inches long by 1.25 inches wide. The squash pendant is 3.75 inches wide by 4 inches long.

This is a excellent heavy construction sterling silver and Carico Lake Turquoise bracelet or cuff from a master silversmith Navajo Native American Indian. The bracelet shows a circa 1940’s to 1950’s age and is the matched piece to the precious lot. The cuff shows a heavy sterling silver construction with a three bar structure with three heavy bezel settings. The bracelet shows a large center stone with two large, but gradually smaller stones with the center setting showing two feather / leaf sterling pieces and each outside having one, a nice symmetrical design. The stones are all polished cabochon turquoise in a gem high quality from the Carico Lake Mine. Overall the bracelet is in very good condition and is truly a nice early representation of Navajo silversmithing. Weights overall _. Included in this lot is a signed Roland Hogan Begay Navajo Native American sterling silver storyteller belt. R.H. Begay is an award-winning Navajo silversmith who was born on a Native American Reservation near Gallup, New Mexico. He began producing his own signature designs in 1974 after learning silversmithing from his father. Inspired by traditional Native American motifs from Navajo life, his unique jewelry designs are known as "storyteller jewelry." He uses an overlay technique to create scenes, cutting out shapes with painstaking precision, and soldering them to an oxidized silver or gold background. This belt features 14 unique Conchos depicting life on a farm. The belt buckle shows the farmer driving his carriage with a horse. The remaining Conchos feature different live stock and grains as well as some farm equipment. The belt buckle and the fifth concho are signed by the artist R.H. Offered in this lot we have a Navajo Native American sterling silver large beaded necklace. The piece displays 24 large sterling silver beads with 18 smaller beads towards the clasp. The beads show a wonderful reflective exterior and are fastened together with a double piece of string. The necklace is free of makers marks and signatures. The piece shows good condition overall with some light patina on some of the beads. The necklace measures 24" long with the larger beads showing a diameter of 3/4".

Crow Beaded High-Top Child's Moccasins c.1890-1900

The lot features an excellent set of high-top moccasins from the Crow Apsaalooke Native American Indians with beatuiful beadwork. The set, which was intended for use by a child, shows an Indian tanned hide construction with sinew sewing and gorgeous beadwork in a geometric pattern with all period correct early glass seed and petit seed beads in a butterscotch and red coloring. The moccasins show a high-top ankle with original Indian tanned hide straps, the ankle leg wraps show a fancy beaded finish. The base shows a thick Great American Bison Buffalo rawhide parfleche thick soles that are sinew sewn. The moccasins are stuffed with old yellowed newspaper. Provenance: The set has been examined by a renowned beadwork expert and found to be correct and are from one of the best American Indian collections in Montana, located in Billings. Each measures 5.5"L soles that are 7.25"H at the ankle and 2.5"W at the base.

Hopi Thunderbird Pottery Bowl / Ladle c. 1950's

This is a nice original pottery ladle or bowl with an excellent effigy and geometric Thunderbird design from renowned Hopi Pueblo Native American Indian potter, Edith Nash. The piece dates to circa 1950's and shows a handmade pottery bowl or ladle having the wings, tail and head being in a three-dimensional design accented by traditional geometric black paint. The base is signed, "Edith Nash" along with the correct hallmark.

This is an authentic Navajo Native American Indian rug, woven in the Chinle Banned pattern and dating to circa 1940's. The Chinle pattern originates from the town of Chinle at the mouth of Canyon de Chelly. The Chinle style was developed by Mary Cabot Wheelwright and Cozy McSparron, a trader at Chinle. They sought to revive weaving using classic period designs with vegetal dyes. The Chinle characteristics are horizontal bands containing Chevrons, Chinle Stars, Squash Blossoms and Diamonds in muted colors of gold, green, tan, off-white and pink. This rug in particular shows a truly exceptional weave, and gorgeous coloring in all natural spun 100% wool with natural aniline dyes. Overall, the rug shows very-good condition. The rug measures 64" by 31".

Champion Harvesting N.C Wyeth Advertising Calendar

For your consideration is a framed Champion Harvesting Machines N.C. Wyeth advertising calendar titled “Alaskan Mail Carrier”. It has a full pad of months for the year 1910 stapled to the bottom with a metal hanging strip at the top. The central illustration reproduces a wonderful work by noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth titled "Alaskan Mail Carrier". It depicts an event in the life of an Alaskan mail carrier named Henderson, credited with the discovery of gold in the famed Klondike Gold Rush, when he was attacked by a pack of wolves. He pulled his trusty six-shooter and managed to kill most of the attackers before the last two wolves decided to beat a hasty retreat. The visible art measures 12 5/8” x 19 ½” and the frame measures 16 ½” x 23 ½”.

In this lot we have an advertisement calendar for Hudson Bay Company Fur Trade Department. The advertisement depicts a calendar dated July of 1929. It has a beautiful photo in it called “A Golden Opportunity” made by Rolph Clark Stone LTD. The image depcits two hunters with their three dogs pulling a sled full of gear and harvested furs as they stumble across a heard of caribou in the background. This is quite an old and beautiful piece just passing it’s ninetieth birthday. The advertisement reads “Hudson’s Bay Company incorporated 27 May 1670. The dispenser shows a steel base with a glass display globe and a red glass cap on top. The globe shows a original shield shaped decal reading "Standard 5 cent Try Them Hot Fresh Delicious". The base is marked on the metal flap reading "Try Some" with the coin slot marked "5 cent". The piece shows its original red painted base with chrome flap and slide. The piece shows a light in the red glass top and is fully functional. The dispenser shows good condition overall with some wear on the paint and the interior will need to be cleaned. The piece measures 15 1/2" tall by 6 3/4" base with the globe measuring 23 1/2" in circumference.

The chess pieces are all hand carved to resemble different animals with the characteristics of of the original pieces on the board. The colors are different due to a darker and lighter stain on the wood from the Mukwa tree. The King and Queen are in the figure of a Lion and Lioness the Bishop is a Rhinoceros, The knight as a Hyena, and the castle is in the figure of an Elephant. The measurements for this chess board are 22 1/4" in diameter and the pieces measurements range from 1 1/2" tall to 3 1/2" tall.

The shield is constructed out of a pointed oval piece of hardened cowhide with slots running up the center with other strips of hide woven into the cut slots. The shield has a straps across the back with a wooden pole running through the center. The Kuwfta spear is a short handled spear used for melee combat with a long steel double bladed spear tip. The spear shows a leaf shaped blade with a hide wrap around the bade. The shield was used with throwing spears with the stabbing spear kept behind the shield as a last defense. The pieces show good condition overall with some wear due to age. The shield measures 20 3/4" wide by 39" tall with a 55" long pole and the spear measures 43 1/2" long with a 17" long blade.

Navajo Crystal Eye Dazzler Trading Post Rug c1950

This is a nice handmade tight all wool and natural dyed rug from the Navajo Native American Indians in a fine Crystal Eye Dazzler pattern. The rug dates to the mid-1900's and shows a very attractive unbanded-Crystal pattern with Eye Dazzler detail showing well preserved good condition. The rug shows two rows of dark brown and yellow at the top and bottom which is accented by a replicated diamond design with storm patterns of an hourglass or bow tie shape in dark brown with rows of tan, yellow and grey. This is really a nice 1950's representation of Reservation period Navajo Trading Post Rugs. Measures overall 60"L x 33"W.
