R.H. Ruana Camp Knife & Leather Scabbard

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 11 of 739)

This is an R.H. Ruana skinner knife and leather scabbard, made in 1983. Rudy Ruana began making custom knives in the 1930's. His business has been family owned from the b...moreeginning and is still in operation today in Bonner, Montana. Ruana knives are highly regarded and sought after by knife collectors and enthusiasts. The knife features a broad sweeping hardened steel blade and an aluminum handle with inset antler grips. The handle is stamped "R.H. Ruana Bonner Montana", a hallmark that was only used in 1983. As told by his grandson, Rudy, he got tired of people asking what the "M" stamp meant, so it was no longer used from 1983 on. In 1984, the hallmark was changed to "Ruana Bonner Montana", thus dropping the "R.H." The knife comes with a custom leather sheath with an additional pouch on the front. The knife shows good condition overall and some light wear. The knife measures 9 3/4" long, with the blade being 5" long.

Cheyenne Spontoon Pipe Tomahawk Beaded Drop c.1850

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 739)

The lot features one of the best Cheyenne pipe tomahawks brought to the market, a phenomenal authentic, circa 1850’s spontoon pipe tomahawk attributed to the Northern Che...moreyenne. The tomahawk is a rare, pre-Indian Wars period piece featuring a blacksmith hand-forged head; it is a very scarce, early style without curled basal processes and having a knife-like blade, which slightly curves inwards and shows a double edge spontoon styling with a median ridge running down the center. The pipe bowl is vase-shaped with forged moldings and filed moldings at the eyelet hold flowing into the squared off, tapering blade with a raided prominent median ridge on both sides of the blade. The median ridge is a true attribute to the piece’s early age and is found on spontoon pipe tomahawks, lance spears, and dag knives. The hardwood haft is adorned with old brass tacks and old hot file brandings that have been heavily applied with raised sections between each tacked section. The tacks are all early trade examples with nice honest patina. The piece is paired with the beautiful beaded Great American Bison Buffalo Indian tanned hide gripping area wrapped sleeve and drop with fringe. The drop has the traditional, typical beaded Cheyenne “bar designs”, all in early glass trade seed beads in colors of chalk white, butterscotch greasy yellow, light green, cobalt, and red-white heart, a latter addition. The drop is backed with red stroud trade cloth and has seven old hawk trade bells tied on at the base with fringed red stroud wool trade cloth and hand cut hide fringe at the base. This is truly a fantastic, well preserved, pre-Indian Wars period example with nice dark patina showing honest true age and use with terrific art appeal. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Dale Harrison out of Ohio. The haft measures 26 ½ inches in length. Tomahawk head measures 10 ½ inches in length. The drop hangs an additional 20 inches in length.

Cheyenne Fully Beaded Sheath & Trade Knife 19th C.

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 739)

The lot features a beautifully beaded Buffalo hide knife sheath with an old tacked trade knife attributed to the Northern Cheyenne Native American Indians of Wyoming duri...moreng the 19th Century. The piece is comprised of Indian brain-tanned Great American Bison Buffalo hide, with the entire front covered in artistically applied old glass trade seed beads in a typical Cheyenne geometric pattern. The beadwork shows colors of chalk white, sky padre blue, greasy green, Cheyenne pink, and semi-transparent red (with one replacement corn yellow bead). The base shows a single hide fringe that is completely covered in a rope beaded linear pattern of the same colors. The beadwork shows overall good condition, given its third quarter 19th Century age, and little to no bead loss. The back of the sheath has two cutouts to be worn on a belt and some staining from use. The old original trade knife shows a typical metal blade with a one piece tiger maple handle that is adorned with old brass trade beads in a nice pattern. Typically a tacked pattern holds meaning to the user and tribe, attributing things such as age, tribe, clan, etc. Both the knife and the sheath have a nice patina, given the circa 1870-1880 age, and are well preserved. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Dale Harrison of Ohio. The sheath measures 10 inches long by 3 inches wide and the knife is 7 inches long and overall 11 inches long with the knife inserted.
