Nampeyo of Hano (1859-1942) Hopi Pottery

This is an outstanding authentic early Hopi pottery polychrome jar attributed to renowned master potter Old Lady Nampeyo of Hano (Hopi, 1859-1942). The jar dates to late 19th Century early 20th Century. Provenance: From a 90-year collection out of Central Arizona in the Coconino National Forest. The piece shows a fantastic three-color polychrome geometric traditional pigment painted design with unique no shoulder olla tall pottery jar. Nampeyo (Tewa name Num-pa-yu, meaning “snake that does not bite”) was a Hopi-Tewa potter who is one of the most renowned master of her era with works in the National Museum of American Art, Museum of Northern Arizona, Spurlock Museum and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. The piece shows a wonderfully executed geometric finely stylized pattern of red, brown and black all displayed on a cream-colored slip background. The piece shows wear and signs of use consistent with its very early age. The works show the correct manufacture and fine craftsmanship along with being unmarked, which is consistent with other authentic Nampeyo pieces of an early age such as this piece. The piece is of a nice large size and shows an overall good condition with no visible cracks or chips with slight paint loss and pitting at the top edge. Measures overall 8.5”H by 5.25”W diameter. The piece shows a wonderfully executed geometric finely stylized pattern of red, brown and black all displayed on a cream-colored slip background. The piece is thought to be a very early example and shows the correct patina consistent with its age. The bowl shows a red and black pattern with cream-white slip background. The inside of the bowl shows a slight red border with black edge. The piece shows some slight paint loss and a hairline crack which only extends between 1.25-1.5 inches. This is an original authentic Elva Nampeyo (1926-1985) Hopi Native American Indian polychrome pottery bowl. Elva Nampeyo, also known as Elva Tewaguna, was an American master potter who was born in the very same Corn Clan house where her grandmother Nampeyo of Hano resided. Elva was also the daughter of Fannie Nampeyo and Vinton Polacca. She learned her trade from her grandmother and her mother, two of the most renowned Hopi potters. Cheyenne Fully Beaded Cradle Papoose 19th Century

This is an excellent fully beaded papoose cradleboard cover from the Cheyenne Native American Indians and dating to the 19th Century. The 1800's piece shows a trade clothe wool blanket base and striped calico trade clothe construction that is fully covered on the top in 1800’s period correct glass trade seed beads in a traditional geometric pattern. The beadwork shows a Cheyenne pink background with rope fancy beaded edge and blue diamond patterns. The front has a wonderful bifurcated tongue fringe down the center which is also accented by long rope beaded side fringe all having a trade of red ocher mineral pigment dye. The fringe is beaded with Cheyenne pink, greasy yellow, semi-transparent green and a fancy edge of rose and green. The end of the fringe shows four rolled tin period correct jingle cones. The piece shows a combination of sinew and trade thread sewn construction and overall is very well preserved with little bead loss. This is truly a well museum quality craftsmanship. Provenance: From a large American Indian collection in Minden, Nevada. The piece measures overall 15.25”L x 7”W x 4.5”H.

Navajo Third Phase Concho Belt circa 1930's

This is an original Navajo Native American Indian Third Phase Concho Belt dating to circa 1930’s. In the early 1900s, the third phase of the concha belt began when artists learned how to set turquoise into their pieces. The piece shows a large rectangular buckle that is hallmarked “GI” and “Sterling” and is set with four polished gem quality turquoise stones from the Morenci Turquoise Mine, which opened in 1864. The belt also shows six nice size butterfly conchos and five oval conchos with each of the eleven conchas being set with a single polished Morenci Turquoise stone. The belt is strung on a black tan leather. Each concho shows a period correct soldered copper loop on the back with black leather gasket, another period correct attribute. Each concho has an outstanding hand tooled and etched intricate design with a fine scalloped edge. Overall the piece shows an outstanding large size. The back of the buckle is marked from a previous Trading Post “3250” the price at the time. The buckle measures 3 5/8” by 3 3/8”, the butterfly conchas are each 2 5/8” by 1.75”, and each oval conchas are 3.25” by 2.5”. The belt overall measures 50 inches overall in length.

All of this centered with a raised scrimshaw ram's head with beautiful attention to detail up the throat to the and wrapping around with a detailed look at its majestic horns. The artist is from Hamilton, MT and has a makers mark of a music note with an arrow pierced through the top right of it, and a 'B' with a line through the bottom part of the 'B' for Bennett. Also marked on this piece is two 'Sterling' marks and two '14k' marks. The bolo overall is in good condition showing slight patina to the clasp the leather goes through. The measurements of this bolo are 19" loop to tip with measurements for the pendant 2 1/2" x 2".

The piece shows sterling silver construction with gold filled accents and vine work. The bottom of the pendant shows a bear claw made of sterling silver. The back of the pendant is marked "Sterling FF" across the back. The pendant shows good condition overall with a warm patina across some of the patina. The piece measures 2 1/2" long by 1" wide.

Early John Deere Farm Implements Sign Terry, MT

Lot # 12 (Sale Order: 14 of 496)      

For your consideration is an early John Deere Quality Farm Implements embossed tin sign. This embossed sign features the second version of the John Deere trademark which was registered in 1912 but began use in 1910. This sign came out of Terry Montana from the Stith Hardware Co. The sign shows the original John Deere yellow and black font. The sign reads from top to bottom; "John Deere Quality - Farm Implements - Sold By - Stith Hardware Co. - Terry. MONT." The sign shows fair condition and a well worn patina. The sign measures 23 1/2" x 11 3/4".

Included in this lot is a Civil War era Cook & Brother's double edge spear point dagger with sheath. Cook and Brother was one of the largest and most successful of the private ordnance factories in the South during the Civil War. It was formed by two British brothers who had moved to New Orleans, Frederick and Francis Cook. This 1860's dagger is complete with leather and silver sheath. The blade measures 7 1/8" and is stamped above the brass guard. The dagger features an engraved sterling ferrule and original 160 year old hand carved ivory grips. The dagger measures 12" long when sheathed.

Featured in this lot we have volume 1 and 2 of North American Indians by George Catlin published in 1851. The two volume set's full title is "Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians" and containing nearly 400 illustrations made from Catlin's original works. From 1832 to 1839, George Catlin extensively studied 50 Indian tribes, taking careful notes on their behavior, traditions and ways of life. The first volume shows its original fold out map showing America with Native American tribes marked on the map. The books show red hardcovers with glint gold lettering on the spine. The set shows good condition with minor wear due to age. The books measure 6 1/2" wide by 10 1/4" tall and 1 3/4" thick with the second volume measuring 2" thick.

The lot features an original photograph by the Gerhard Sisters of St. Louis, Missouri during the Worlds Fair 1904 of an Eskimo Native American Indian. The Eskimo Indigenous represented in this photograph is the brother of Nancy Columbia (1893-1959). Nancy Columbia, also known as Miss Columbia and Columbia Eneutseak, was declared the Queen of the Carnival at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle she was a performer and later the first known Inuit professional actor in the history of film. This photo was taken of the young Mister Columbia during the St. Louis World’s Fair also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904. The figure is shown in a wood paneled studio wearing leopard seal skin fur jacket and pants with traditional mukluks and a wonderful belt and brooch of Walrus Tusk. The boudoir card or full format picture is marked on the first “Gerhard Sisters St. Louis” and is signed the same in the artwork. The Gerhard Sisters, Emme Gerhard (1872-1946) and Mayme Gerhard (1876-1955), were the first women photographers to establish a studio in St. Louis, Missouri in 1903. The piece has been set in an early same period correct antique frame and a photocopy of the back of the piece is accompanied which is handwritten, “1904 / Gagarios Fact- Nom. Labradore Ndin.” A digital example from the Missouri History Museum is shown with Mister Columbia standing with Nancy Columbia with him in the exact same outfit, the image is titled, “Esquimaux Nancy Columbia’s Family” and was also taken by the Gerhard Sisters. The visible photo area measures 7.25”x5.25”. The frame is 10.5”x8.5”.

The ring shows three oval cut Rubellite Tourmaline stones showing an approximate total weight of 2.69 carats having a fine clarity and rich coloring with flashes of bright deep red, pinkish red, and purple. The setting shows a unique wide fully fluted design which has been hand engraved along the four outer edges of the ring, a truly artistic addition to a wonderful late Art Nouveau early Art Deco piece of jewelry. The stones consist of the center stone being approximately 1.34 carats and two side stones being approximately 0.70 and 0.65 carts for a total stone weight of 2.69 carats. The ring shows three faceted Rhodolite Garnet precious gemstones with an approximate total weight of 1.68 carats. The stones show a raspberry/purplish-red with an old mine cushion cut center stone and two round brilliant cuts (the center stone is approximately 1.48 carats and the side stones are approximately 0.20 in total weight). The ring is hallmarked “10K” and shows a very good condition on the setting. The stones have slight imperfections and chips, typical of early mine cut stones.
