Blackfoot Tacked Leather Sheath & Trade Knife 1890

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 758)

The lot features a fantastic, authentic 19th Century Blackfoot Native American Indian silver and brass tacked sheath and large trade knife. The sheath is crafted from thi...moreck harness saddle remnant leather, likely traded or recovered by the Blackfeet, and further adorned with a linear pattern of old large trade tacks and conchos having a silver finish. The tacks are all larger and appear to be solid brass with a silver, possibly sterling or nickel silver, with one concho, a very unique and uncommonly seen example (the tacks and concho are not magnetic). The sheath is of a larger size and would have been worn on a belt and is paired with a larger bowie-like trade knife. The knife shows a nice, thick metal spine and large bowie-like clip point blade with rich coloring, along with a solid hardwood, one piece grip secured to the blade with two heavy copper and metal rivets and two metal tacks at the end. The wood has a dark coloring from honest age and use. This is truly a rare, unusual example with silver tacks and large knife. Provenance: Collected from the Blackfoot Indians in the Waterton-Glacier region. The knife measures overall 12 5/8” long, with a blade that is 7.75” long by 2” wide. The sheath is 12” long by 5.25” wide. The knife and sheath together is 13 5/8” long.

Navajo Ganado Crystal Eye Dazzler Rug c.1910 Large

Lot # 20 (Sale Order: 20 of 758)

Featured in this lot is this Navajo Ganado crystal eye dazzler rug, circa 1910-1930's. The rug shows stepped crystal eye dazzler design on an off white field with eye daz...morezler browns and red coloration. The rug shows 100% wool tightly woven into exquisite whimsical eye dazzler patterns and a central diamond with eye dazzler patterns decorated with natural dye colors of red, dark brown, grey, and white. Originally, the Old Crystal trading post was established in 1894 in a remote part of the Navajo Reservation, southwest of Two Grey Hills and northwest of Gallup. In 1896, J.B. Moore purchased an interest in the trading post and re-named it Crystal after a pure sparkling mountain spring that was in the area. Due to the remoteness of the Trading Post, he started using a mail order catalog to sell his rugs to the Eastern market. The first catalog came out in 1903, with another in 1911. He left the reservation in 1911. During his stay at Crystal, he greatly influenced the change in styles of Navajo rugs being produced at the Crystal Trading Post. The condition of this rug is good and shows its age, with fading to the natural red dye causing a pink coloration. The measurements of this rug are 61 1/2" x 50 1/2".
