Early 1870's Sioux Beaded Child's Moccasins

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 501)      

This is an excellent set of early circa 1870’s fully top beaded moccasins from the Sioux Native American Indians. The set shows a parfleche rawhide sole which is sinew sewn to the top which is constructed of Indian tanned hide being adorned of excellent period correct 1800’s glass trade seed and petit seed beads. The moccasins show a medium height ankle with nice tongue of Indian tanned hide, the ankle is accented by an early patterned calico trade clothe. The beadwork, which is sinew sewn a true attribute of the sets very early age, has an excellent Buffalo track geometric pattern with cobalt background and chalk white border with squares and stepped patterns of cobalt and greasy yellow. The set is in excellent museum quality preserved condition with little to almost no bead loss. The hide is also in very good condition with no visible cracking. The set still shows the original Indian tanned hide tie straps. One of the moccasins shows a patch of recycled polychrome painted parfleche, a truly wonderful addition. Provenance: From a large American Indian beaded moccasin collection in Laurel, Montana. Each moccasin measures 7”L sole by 2.75-3”H ankle by 3”W.

Wyoming Arapaho Beaded Sheath & Trade Knife 19th C

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 501)      

The lot features a fine old Northern Plains beaded sheath and trade knife set collected from the Arapaho Native American Indians of Eastern Wyoming and dating to the 19th Century. The sheath shows an Indian tanned hide construction that is covered in fantastic 19th Century period correct glass trade seed beads in a geometric pattern. The beadwork shows a chalk white background with patterns in red white heart, Cheyenne pink, medium green, medium blue and having a fancy beaded edge border in Cheyenne pink. The sheath still shows the original tie strap at the top along with three drop fringes of Indian tanned hide which are adorned with old rolled tin jingle cones. The trade knife also shows an early age with large blade, having a riveted metal bolster and wooden handle that is covered in Prairie Rattlesnake skin and accented by brass trade tacks in an artful pattern. The set is said to date to circa 1870-1880 and displays very well. Provenance: From the respected Wyoming collection of Ted and Lilly Jarvis and the sheath was pictured in the 2009 book “Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art” by Mark Francis on page 15, figure 15. Together the set is pictured in the 2019 release, “Rare American Indian Weapons Volume 2”. Overall the set shows well preserved condition with some wear from age and very slight bead loss. The sheath measures 10 ¼”L by 3”W. The knife measures 12”L.

Flathead Polychrome Painted Parfleche Drum 19th C.

The lot features a polychrome painted parfleche drum from the Flathead Native American Indians and dating to circa Pre-1890. The piece shows a bent wood frame which has been covered in wetted and stretched Buffalo parfleche hide and then sinew parfleche sewn. The piece has been polychrome mineral pigment painted with a red ocher background which extends to the sides of the drum and a black ocher circle at the center. The center of the drum shows wear where the piece was pounded, a true testament to its early age. The piece comes with a beater which shows a stripped willow solid wood handle which has been covered in Buffalo parfleche hide and has a nice red ocher pigment dye. The piece shows an original collection or museum tag which reads, “Blood Drum + Stick B Picked Up Polson 1962” and the collection number of “HG.JJ B-19”. The back of the drum shows four two sinew sets of ties which culminate at the center holding the hide taunt, a period correct craftsmanship. Flathead Indian polychrome painted warrior drums are very scarce. Provenance: The piece was collected in Polson, Montana in 1962 and is from a large American Indian collection in Great Falls, Montana. The drum measures overall 14 inches in diameter by 3 inches wide. The beater is 16.25 inches in length.

Ancient Plateau & Plains Artifact Collection

This is a nice collection of 89 artifacts from the Plateau and Plains Native American Indians and having a Paleo Ancient Age. The collection includes such wonderful points as Northern Side Notch, Buffalo Gap Side Notch, Buck Taylor Notched (aka Red Horn Myers), Desert Side Notch, Abiquiu Side Notch, Hells Canyon Basal Notch, small Haskett, Humboldt or Clovis Tulare Lake, Cascade, and Mescal Knife. These were used as bird points, knives, scrappers, tools, projectiles and more. Also include is an old stone bead at the center and bone bead above that. Provenance: From a multi-generation artifact collection spanning 80-100 years from Las Cruzes, New Mexico. The collection is displayed in a vintage oak trimmed glass topped display case with brass locks. These points date anywhere from as old as the Haskett which dates to 10,500-9,350 B.P. to the Buffalo Gap dating to 550-350 B.P. The oak display case measures 24" wide by 18 1/4" wide and 2" tall.

Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan) Pottery Dough Bowl 19th C

The lot features a nice pottery dough bowl which is from the Ohkay Owingeh San Juan Pueblo Native American Indians and dates to the 19th Century. The bowl has a utilitarian form with red polished finish and was most likely used as a dough bowl. Early 1800’s Ohkay Owingeh San Juan pottery is very scarce and predominetly utilitarian in form with this being a nice large representation with well preserved condition. The bowl shows some loss to the finish, but overall displays very well. The pueblo was first founded around 1200 AD during the Pueblo III Era, and its said the Tewa people moved from the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. The piece shows good condition with no visible chips or cracks. Provenance: From a 90-year collection out of Central Arizona in the Coconino National Forest. This pot measures 5 1/4" tall with a 11" diameter.

Original Hopkins & Allen Arms Co. Poster c. 1900-

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 501)      

This is a scarce authentic early 1900 Hopkins and Allen Arms Company Wild West Revolvers Advertising poster. Original Hopkins & Allen Arms Co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A. advertising posters are very rare and highly collectible with most being in the “Man and Woman in a Canoe” and “Prairie Girl” chromolithograph pattern with very few being in this rare Wild West Revolver style. The piece has been examined closely and is found to be an authentic original early 1900 piece. A similar piece which is in a smaller form and on tin was sold in Rock Island Auction Companies 2010 sale and value at $2,250 with this example pre-dating that piece. The poster is in very well-preserved good condition with some small imperfections being seen, only adding to the pieces original age and authenticity. The poster reads, “Hopkins & Allen Wild West Revolver” and shows an early 1900 woman who is believed to be Annie Oakley wearing a beaded Wild West Show buckskin jacket and skirt and is holding a Hopkins & Allen Revolver with a larger example being shown at the bottom of the piece in beautiful art form. The piece is framed in a period correct early 1900, late 1800’s carved wood frame, which truly sets the piece off. Provenance: From the prominent Ex-art collection of Edward Bazinet, the founder of Department 56, the piece was proudly displayed at his 5-Bar-6 Ranch in Paradise Valley Pray, Montana where a portion of the movie, A River Runs Through It was filmed. The measurements of this framed poster are 26 1/2" x 38 1/4" and the measurements of the visible art are 25 1/2" x 17 1/2". The Ed Bazinet collection also included various Montana Frank Posters and other rare arms posters, which lends to the scarcity and authenticity of this piece.

S.F. Cody Famous War Kite Chromolithograph Poster

Offered for your bidding pleasure is this S.F. Cody Famous War Kite Chromolithograph Poster. Franklin Samuel Cowdery (1867-1913), who adopted the name Samuel Franklin Cody, was born in Davenport, Iowa, on March 6, 1867. American showman, aviator, and inventor. Cody claimed that he spent his early years living life as a cowboy, training horses, and hunting for buffalo, although, his early life is difficult to separate from his own stories told later in life. This excellent chromolithograph shows a handsome life-size bust image of Cody dressed in a crisp, white military uniform. Cody gazes off to the viewer’s right with his shoulder length hair flowing from beneath his hat. Below his bust is an image of his war kite resting on a plinth, which reads "S. F. Cody. F.R.M.S Of Texas U.S.A. Inventor of the Famous War Kite". Cody is to England what the Wright brothers are to the United States. This extraordinary poster shows excellent condition. The visible art measuring 29 1/4" tall by 19" wide. The frame measures 39 3/4" by 29" wide.

Missoula Mercantile Gun Cabinet Display Case c1900

Featured in this lot we have a Missoula Mercantile gun cabinet display case originating from the early 1900’s in Kalispell, MT. The piece dates to circa 1897-1911. This impressive gun cabinet display case is constructed from solid quarter sawn oak with reinforced miters. The case has a hexagonal construction with large glass pieces for the display of firearms in the mercantile shop. This piece has a rotating red carousel which holds 36 long guns. This early 1900’s display cabinet predates the Kalispell Mercantile shop. The Missoula Mercantile sold everything from groceries to wagons. By 1897, the Kalispell branch employed twenty men and covered a 300 mile sales territory, delivering by train as far as Havre. Building additions in 1901, 1903, and 1908, and the installation of large new display windows, provided spacious quarters when the retailer became Kalispell Mercantile in 1911. The glass and oak show very good condition. The locking mechanism for the case is not present. The case measures 56" x 32 1/2" x 32 1/2".

For your consideration is this Globe-Wernicke Co. quarter sawn oak Barrister Cabinet. The Globe-Wernicke Company was formed as a result of the Cincinnati based Globe Files Company (est. in 1882) purchasing the Minneapolis based Wernicke Company, founded in 1893 by Otto Wernicke, in 1899. The company is best known for their high-end bookcases, desks, and other office furniture. This Barrister is in pristine display condition showing little damage to the cabinet and the carpentry and design is of the highest value. This is a six section barrister with eight total pieces including the crown and the base of the cabinet. This cabinet consists of three section 308 pieces and two section 310 pieces along with a unmarked section. The roaster is placed atop the stand where the fire would be lit for the roasting process to begin. Inside the roaster we see several of it's original trays used in the roasting process. This roaster was likely used by a street vender or used at carnivals. This wonderful piece was Manufactured by the Atsatt Brothers in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts and patented April 2nd, 1895. This wonderful photo displays a man standing in a narrow crevasse of the rock with excellent contrasting seen in the image. Shown on this necklace are 50 rounded concho / concha beads with each being made of two original Buffalo Nickel coins dating from 1928-1937 for a total of 100 coins (they have been slightly rounded but retain the beautiful detail of the original coins). The necklace has been strung on an early sterling silver chain strand with hand made large clasp. The piece is believed to have been made in the late 1930’s to 1940’s when these coins were readily available. When unclasped the necklace measures 22” long.

This is a wonderful and large original Navajo Native American Indian wool trading post rug dating to the mid-1900’s. The Klagetoh style was established by Lorenzo Hubbell late in 1800, along with the contrasting Ganado Style. This rug shows a grey background and cream / white background with a light brown / tan with black Greek Key border having a black band border. The center of the rug shows a double diamond stepped pattern with rare Celtic Knot like woven border of brown and black being interwoven. The center also shows four three stepped corner accents and the center medallion shows four eight-point sections, two stepped diamonds and two twelve-point sections. The rug is in very good well preserved condition showing a very tight weave with 100% soft churro wool. The rug originated from a Trading Post in Klagetoh, Arizona from 1950’s. The rug measures overall 77" x 47".
