"Uncle Tom's Cabin" Rare One Volume 1863

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 797)

"Featured in this lot is an extremely rare second printing of, ""Uncle Tom's Cabin"" by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ticknor and Fields., 1863. Originally published in two sepa...morerate volumes, this ""gift"" edition published both volumes in one binding, and only 516 copies were printed that year! With gilt page edges and spine, this edition has a personalized inscription date of 1854. Originally published by John P. Jewett & Co., when financial disaster loomed large for Jewett, Beecher reached out to Ticknor and Fields requesting they buy the stereotype plates at an assets auction. Because Ticknor and Fields was equated with quality literature, Stowe became part of the prestigious list which included Longfellow, Hawthorne, and Emerson, among others. An anti-slavery novel, ""Uncle Tom's Cabin; Or Life Among the Lowly"" had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the US and is said to have helped lay the groundwork for the US Civil War.

He worked at Rookwood for nearly 20 years until 1903. His early work is generally indistinguishable from the other Rookwood artists with a conservative Japanesque decorative style using a limited repertory of leafy bamboo, flying butterfly, and flying swallows. It was not long before he developed his own style which led him to become one of the most respected of all Rookwood artists. He was an active landscape and portrait painter during his career at Rookwood, and for many years after as well. Matthew A. Daly's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices up to $11,875 depending on the size and medium of the artwork. This vase is exceptional in appearance, the flowers and stems life-like, the colours are warm. Hole is drilled in the center of the base, no other marring or defects are noted, normal age related crazing noted at the base. Measures
