This collection of objects includes a variety of Native American handicrafts and fetishes, primarily from Southwestern tribes such as the Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo.
Featured Items
For size reference, the horse hair buffalo measures just over 6 inches wide.
Featured Items
- Zuni Fetishes: Several small carved animal figures are visible, including a bear, a turtle, and owls. These are likely Zuni fetishes, which are small carvings of animals or other natural objects believed to hold power and protect their owners.
- Horse Hair Pottery: The large, light-colored buffalo figurine is an example of Navajo horse hair pottery. This technique involves placing horse hair on a hot pot after firing, which burns and leaves a unique carbonized pattern.
- Pueblo Pottery: The round, decorated object with a lid is a piece of Pueblo pottery, possibly from the Acoma or Hopi tribe. This style of pottery is known for its intricate designs and use of natural clay pigments.
- Carved Figures: There are also various other carved figures, including a spoon, an egg-shaped stone, and two bowls, all of which are likely also part of this collection of Native American artifacts and art.

Authentic Hopi Indian Kachina Sun Face Doll - R. Platero
This figure is a Sun Face Kachina doll, representing a spiritual being in the religious beliefs of the Pueblo peoples of the American Southwest. The name "Kachina" or "Katsina" refers to the spiritual entities, the men who impersonate them in ceremonies, and the dolls themselves.
Cultural Significance
Cultural Significance
- Symbolism: The Sun Face Kachina (Tawa) represents the spirit of the sun, bringing warmth, shelter for the elderly, and a bright future for the young. It is considered one of the more powerful katsinam because the sun is essential for life and growth.
- Purpose: These figures are not toys but are traditionally given to Hopi children to teach them about the different spirits and their associated religious and cultural significance.
- Craftsmanship: Authentic Kachina dolls are typically carved from cottonwood root. While the Hopi were the original carvers, the Navajo also create their own style, sometimes incorporating materials like feathers and beads. The craftsmanship has evolved over time from simpler forms to more detailed, "action-style" figures, which are often highly sought after by collectors

Authentic Native American Art Collectables
This lot is a group of four decorative items, each representing a different traditional design from Native American cultures of the Southwest. These are likely ornaments or small carvings based on their size and appearance.
The items are identified as follows:
The items are identified as follows:
- Leftmost carving: This is a tall, carved figure with a headdress, possibly a Katsina doll or a small totem-like figure from the Hopi or Zuni people. The visual matches suggest it is an "old-style" Hopi carving.
- Second from left: This circular ornament features a smiling sun face surrounded by "petals" or rays. The design is known as a Sunface, which is a sacred symbol in Zuni culture representing the Sun Father. The Sunface is a popular element in Zuni jewelry and art, symbolizing the cycle of seasons and prosperity.
- Third from left: This is another circular ornament featuring a stylized turtle with a diamond-shaped pattern on its back. In Pueblo cultures, the turtle is a significant symbol of long life, water, and the earth. This type of design is common in pottery and other decorative items from various pueblos, including the Isleta and Acoma pueblos. The reverse of this piece has the Corn Maiden bust depicted.
- Rightmost carving: This is a carved figure with a striped body and a hat with two striped horns. This is a Koshare Clown or Hano Clown, a type of Katsina figure from the Hopi people. These clowns play a ceremonial role, using humor and satire to teach important lessons and comment on unacceptable behavior.
