Fossil Reptile

Captorhinus Aguti. Admiral Formation, OK. Lower Permian. Captorhinus was one of the very first reptiles found to be recorded in the fossil record. Permian in age - 280 million years old. An anapsid is a reptile which lacks temporalopenings in the back of its skull. The only living reptiles/anapsids are the testudines, the turtles and tortoises. Captorhinus was a plant eater by evidence by the back teeth which are multi-rowed and suited for crushing leaves ratherthan cutting meat.

Orthoceras - Ordovician- Sahara Desert, Talmud, Morocco. This huge array of fossil cephalopods is a work of art in black and white in by itself. Orthoceras, a species of fossil squid, is positive proof of what is now the Sahara desert was oncethe Sahara Sea. These incredible individualized specimens have been meticulously sculpted out of their limestone matrix using hand tools and painstakingly polished resulting in this 3-dimensional portrayal. Orientation in the samedirection was created by the rhythmic motion of the pounding prehistoric waves over the past eons. Measures 28" wide by 26" high.

Araucaria Mirabilis -Jurassic Age, Patagonia, Argentina The Araucaria species is one of the oldest tree types still alive today. Ancestor to modern monkey puzzle tree found in many nurseries today. Araucaria was a coniferous evergreen abundant in Argentina during the Jurassic period. The tallest recorded specimen is 500 feet tall. Too high for even the giant sauropods of the Jurassic. As exposed, the striking pattern of the seeds in thecross section and polished faces are presented in this magnificent cone.

Mammuthus Primigenuis. Pleistocene, Alaska Found as the frozen tundra recedes inch by inch from the top of the world, this beautifully preserved mammoth tusk presented itself to modern man. The surface of the prehistoric ivory isundulated with lovely creamy white and warm brown coloration. The end of the tusk allows viewing of a fascinated glimpse of the internal structure of the tusk. Presentation on a wooden stand makes for an extremely impressive display. The tuskmeasures 39" on the curve.

Eryon was a lobster-like crustacean which caught much of its prey with its large pincher type claws. Perfectly preserved in astonishing detail, a museum quality specimen. Giant Irish Elk Skull

Megaloceras giganteous - Pleistocene, Germany - Megaloceras was one of the largest elk species to ever live. This immense skull, with partial horns, measures 20 inches long and 9 inches wide. Carcharodon megalodon - Miocene age, New Caledonia - The Greek translation is "big tooth". An ocean dwelling ancient shark believed to reach lengths over 50 feet. This is an exceptional specimen measuring 4 3/8 inches. Related totoday's great white. The light coloring is from the mineral sediments off New Caledonia. This specimen has nice serrations, unlike most specimens which have been polished down with no serrations remaining.

Pleistocene - Peace river Florida This massive upper jaw with two massive teeth, measures almost 18" in length with 7" and 6.5/8" teeth. The dark coloring is from the high concentration of tannic acid sediments of thepeace river, the north American mastodon ranged from Alaska to central Mexico. The mastodon had molars that terminated in distinctive cone like cusps.
