COMBAT CAPTURED STEYR-SOLOTHURN ORIGINAL MP34 SMG

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 1 of 693)

W/ ORIGINAL IRS DOCUMENTATION. Cal. 9mm Steyr. S# 6438. Bbl. 8”. This particular example was brought back to the United States from Germany where it was captured in comba...moret as a war souvenir & submitted for registration w/ the Treasury Department's "APPLICATION FOR IMPORTATION OF FIREARMS" which was approved by the IRS June 16, 1947 after being submitted on January 13, 1947. Mfg. by Steyr-Solothurn, the MP34 utilizes old world manufacturing techniques that more resemble precision machinery than an open bolt submachine gun. Unlike those that would follow, manufactured in a way conducive to mass production utilizing as many wide spec parts as possible for broad spectrum uniformity, the MP34 is fitted, machined & finished w/ extremely tight tolerances. Weighing in at a hefty 10 lbs., it tames the 9mm cartridge in this particular offering like a kitten. Richly blued steel w/ a fine walnut stock, it looks more like an expensive collectible rifle than the purpose it was actually mfg. to provide. Details such as knurling of the sight adjustment & the micro serrations & circular grooves on other parts immediately display the quality of manufacturing. A vented bbl. shroud w/ a right side mounted bayonet is another unique trait of this classic SMG. The recoil buffering system is a rod that connects to the bolt & telescopes into the buttstock outwardly similar to the FN/FAL family of firearms. This is not a tube gun but a finely machined receiver w/ a circular interior. Exterior machining more resembles an octagon. Another unique trait is a hinged top cover to access the bolt & carrier in an accurate & rapid manner. Front sight is a protected permanent post. Rear tangent sight graduates from 50 to 500 meters in micro adjustments. These were select fire w/ the “E” (semi) & “F” (full) selector bar on the left side of the stock between the trigger & the receiver. To render inoperable, the original selector was tacked so it would not disengage from semi. The selector has since been replaced though the original is included & may easily be brought back to service. The original copy of this form is included w/ this lot to the successful bidder. MAGS: 3 - 32 rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original Treasury Department registration as war souvenir, as mentioned above. Original leather mag. pouch. Original selector. CONDITION: blue remains dark w/ a consistent finish over all exterior metal surfaces where originally applied. Patches of old light patina are apparent mostly above magazine well but may be found indiscriminately throughout as well as some light dings on the bbl. shroud possibly from armory rack wear. Stock has impressions & scratches consistent w/ firearms of this era & is numbered to match the gun. Every moving part functions smooth & fluid & gun appears to function properly. Bore is clean w/ good rifling. (03-1425/JZ). THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT CURIO & RELIC REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. $12,000-18,000.

Cal. 7.7mm. S# 41454. Bbl. 28". Made by Hitachi in December, 1943. Complete w/ an original tripod also manufactured by Hitachi in November, 1942. The right sideplate is e...morengraved “JPL T AZ85653”. Several features of this gun were developed from the early Hotchkiss MG design. Most prominent are the easily recognizable heavy cooling fins (we have an original Hotchkiss in this auction which can be viewed to see the similarities). 4X10 Optic mfg Tokyo. The gun & the tripod are both fantastic examples not only in aesthetics, but in ease of movement & operation. This gun was once part of the Dolf Goldsmith collection, the author of many authoritative hard cover MG books including “The Devil’s Paintbrush”. It was also formerly on loan to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. We are delighted to include this in our October, 2019 auction. CONDITION: like other guns from this period, light dusting of patina has appeared before being brought back under control. Cal. 308. S# 0001. Bbl. 24”. Early WWII vintage Browning 1919 A-4 built on a Gwinn Firearms registered side plate. Mack Gwinn, the papered manufacturer is a Bangor, Maine...more area native w/ a long history in both U.S. military special forces & the firearms industry. Very common to find these 1919 examples chambered in 308, 30-06 & 8mm. Paperwork indicates original registration was 30-06, though current configuration is at least partially 308. 7.62X51 Conversion does not currently include rear spacer for .308. This gun is mounted on a popular WWII M-2 tripod. Tripod has a brass plate marked “Evans Pr. Co. 1942”. 718 Dia. muzzle booster marked “BA”. Originally sold from the collection of Bill Morrison. Sights are intact & function properly. Traverse & elevation mechanism are smooth & easily allow for both free moving & micro adjustment when desired. Fiber A6 pistol grip. Right side panel has a horizontal crack at the screw hole & a sm. piece missing on the bottom though neither seem to inhibit function. Bore retains extremely strong rifling. (03-1428/JZ). MODERN. DWM MAXIM MG08 MG.

Lot # 1004 (Sale Order: 4 of 693)

Cal. 8mm. S# 46861. Bbl 30", marked “DWM”. On a Maxim original sled mt. This MG08 Maxim was mfg. by D.W.M. in Berlin in 1918. Items that correspond matching the original ...moreS# in some variation of 46861, including parts as they get smaller dropping numbers off to become shorter & fit the space including 46861, 6861, 861 & 61 consist of left side plate, top cover, bbl. jacket, sights, bolt linkage, feed block, cocking lever, trigger safety, trigger, scope mt. & possibly others that are less clearly visible. Bolt originally marked 318 w/ a deep strike through, renumbered to 3545 to match the linkage which also carries the 61 indicating that it was original. Items w/ different numbers include oil brush caps which curiously are stamped 16 which is a transposition of the original number. Fusee cover is unnumbered & painted indicating that it may not be original. The bolt linkage bears an odd variation of an otherwise popular German Imperial proof mark. This a former example at one time on loan to the Evergreen Space & Aviation Museum. CONDITION: while both oil caps are free, left side retention spring is absent. Several components of sled mt., serial number 3568, are also absent though all adjustment settings from screw drives to simple mechanical height adjustments move freely & it enjoys full adjustment. Rear mounting pin, while the right size for the receiver portion on the mt. is too lg. in dia. to pass through the receiver of the gun & properly lock it into place. Top mounting strap functions perfectly to retain a positive grip. Forward water drain below bbl. jacket is absent as well as the drain cock. Firing mechanism functions smoothly in all aspects. Side plates retain the majority of their original blued finish as well as all external firing mechanism components. As w/ many examples from the WWI era, there are several areas of patina that have also infiltrated the finish. Fusee cover carries a different green shade of paint that differs from all other finishes. Water jacket finish is thin w/ a very light patina scattered throughout though not very noticeable at any distance & also has 2 sm. dents on left side towards the muzzle. Right grip has vertical cracks though they don’t seem to compromise the functionality. Bore has unusually predominant rifling. This MG08 will make an amazing functional display highlight of any early 20th century firearms collection. (03-1426/JZ). THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT CURIO & RELIC REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. $15,000-20,000.

DESIRABLE ALL MATCHING GERMAN STEYR (660 CODE)

Lot # 1005 (Sale Order: 5 of 693)

MP-40 SMG. Cal. 9mm Para. S# 4928d. Bbl. 9.9" w/ hooded fixed blade front sight. Rear sight is a windage drift adj. 2 piece folding leaf. Of all the German WWII era SMGs,...more the MP-40 may be the most iconic of them all. Its slow cyclic rate combined w/ decent sights & pleasant ergonomics make it as fun to operate as it is interesting to look at. It utilizes a very simplistic, yet incredibly smooth open bolt firing mechanism. The recoil system is typical of German over engineering consisting of a 3 piece telescoping rod w/ a captured spring that doubles as the connection point for the firing pin which slides inside of the bolt. The safety mechanism is an extremely simple design which shares commonalties w/ other WWII era SMGs. It consists of a rearward notch that interfaces w/ the cocking handle holding the bolt to the rear. Manufactured by Steyr "660" in 1940, this MP-40 utilizes an early transitional flat magazine housing indicative of the earliest models. All matching numbers including rarer pieces not uncommonly replaced such as original aluminum resting bar & firing pin mechanism. Both portions of rear sight even retain matching numbers. Marked w/ waffenamt "WaA623" which is the correct Steyr stamping. Initials "PHX" added w/ electric pencil at rear of tube under receiver cap (not visible w/out disassembly). Under-folding stock. Dark brown bakelite grips & lower receiver cover. MAGS: 1-30 rd. mag. marked ".98E", "40" & having 3 waffenamts. CONDITION: good bore w/ strong rifling having frosting & a few areas of fine pitting. Finish on all external surfaces appears original blending from black to light brown patina. Bbl. shows little finish remaining. Firing mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. Stock locks tight in both folded & extended positions. Brown bakelite grips & receiver show some handling marks but retain the vast majority of finish & color. Overall a remarkably complete, correct example of such an early German SMG. Small details on this particular gun such as the original resting bar & original firing pin really separate it from of the "shooter grade" MP-40s that are more commonly encountered. (03-1438/JZ). THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT CURIO & RELIC REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. $18,000-24,000.

Cal. 7.92x33. S# 4548Q. Bbl. 16 1/2" w/ thread protector as threaded for Krummlauf device. The MP-44 is commonly referred to as the first true modern assault rifle. Chamb...moreered in 7.92x33mm, this allowed the standard German cal. to remain 8mm while at the same time adopting a medium range load. Select fire, allowing semi or full auto fire w/ the simplicity of sliding the switch above the safety. This rifle utilized both metal stampings & machined parts to minimize production cost and time. Hooded fixed blade front sight. Ladder rear sight graduated to 800 meters. Circular mag. release emboldened w/ ring pattern. Checkered cross block selector switch "E/D". Folding dust cover over ejection port on right side. Left hand reciprocating charging handle. An original example of the popular MP-44 MG. On bottom of receiver in front of mag. well are the following "COS", "6" or "9" depending on viewing perspective, eagle over "280", "qlv" (Erma) & complete German eagle. Left side receiver markings include "MP44" above trigger group & "4548Q / 44" on mag. well. Below front pivot pin, rear of mag. well eagle above "37" & "fxo" (Haenel). Trigger group marked "4548" as well as waffenamt "WaA21". Ladder rear sight marked "48". Op rod marked "4548" & "fxo". Bolt marked "4548" (field matched). Rear stock extenstion marked on bottom "548" & "COS". Bottom of handguard marked "Lx". Bbl. marked "1637b", "H" & "8". Gas port breech plug marked "ce" " (JP Sauer). MAGS: 1 original "fxo" 30 rd. mag. marked "1001", "qlx" & "MP44". CONDITION: all parts function smooth & correct when cycled by hand. All exterior metal surfaces retain the majority of their original finish w/ exception of thinning on high spots. Gentle patina appears in areas of thinning finish. Bright bore w/ strong rifling. Lot # 1007 (Sale Order: 7 of 693)

Cal. 8mm Lebel. S# 44489. Bbl. 31". Original U.S. Standards Parts Co. tripod model of 1916 w/ highly desirable anti aircraft sights, both front & rear. Right side of rece...moreiver marked “MITRAILLEUSE AUTOMATIQUE HOTCHKISS/BREVETEE S.G.D.G.” This firearm is a beautiful medley of steel & brass. Prominent brass parts include feed shuttle, pistol grip, rear & front anti aircraft mts. (as well as a significant portion of the sights themselves) & elevation adjustment screw for tripod. The Model 1914 is almost instantly recognizable due to the 5 enormous cooling fins on the bbl. just forward of the receiver. This is one of several features that proved to be inspirational to the later Japanese HMG designers. All obvious numbers appear to be matching except for bbl., serial numbered A28089. Every moving part functions smooth & fluid & gun appears to function properly. Formerly part of the renowned Dolf Goldsmith collection; weaponry formerly on loan to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum which were auctioned off w/ great fanfare. MAGS: 5 total 24 rd. feed strips (4 brass, 1 steel). CONDITION: this firearms on its original mt. is breathtaking to view. The level of craftsmanship not only on the gun but its unique 360 degree mt. is obvious at first glance & only becomes more apparent the closer you look. It has many distinct & unique features, several that have gone on to inspire future designs. The circular design in the drum adjustment of the rear sight & the rnd. tripod base plate are two of the more obvious, not to mention the prominent cooling fins. Finish on the receiver & the bbl. are somewhat uniform & period correct. The finish graduates from full coverage to extremely thin w/ no sharp breaks. A light patina as would be expected in any working collection appears to have migrated throughout the entire piece only to be temporarily tamed for the next generation. (03-1430/JZ). BROWNING DESIGN BRITISH MKII (FLEX) HMG.

Lot # 1008 (Sale Order: 8 of 693)

Cal. 303. S# BS 211911. Bbl. 24". A British Aircraft version of the Browning machine gun. This is a fully transferable C&R MG once owned by the well known collector J. Cu...morertis Earl. The MKII chambered in .303 was the standard aircraft gun used by the British in WWII. Heavily modified from the early 1930 pattern, belt fed, Colt Browning machine gun, the British redesigned their MKII to fire from an open bolt. It had an incredibly high rate of fire compared to the much more common Browning family of belt feeds. It currently utilizes a single spade grip & is configured for right hand feed, though it is convertible to right or left. US 30-06 links maybe used to feed the MKII though they must undergo a lg. amount of modification first. There are a approx. 200 modified links included w/ this gun. A sm. number of the proper links mfg. by British Pencil Company marked "BP" are also provided w/ this gun. It is perhaps easiest fed when utilizing the cloth US 30-06 belt. There are 6 such belts included w/ the gun. In order to utilize this aircraft gun in a ground mount capacity it is cocked utilizing a stubby short charging handle on the left side of the gun, while RAF gunners had the luxury of utilizing a cable based charging system for official use. The current owner has designed & provided a cocking handle to supply adequate leverage when firing from a tripod. It comes w/ an adapter to mount on a Vickers tripod. Bbl. jacket is slotted for cooling & it is currently equipped w/ the special MKII flash hider. The sight radius is just under 27" in length & consists of a front pin & a rear notch sight. Finish on all exterior metal surfaces is dark & parkerized. The S# indicates it was mfg. by Standard Motors under the oversight of Birmingham Small Arms (BSA). Since the extraction & ejection of hot spent casings is erratic, especially under such a high rate of fire, an included accessory provided for this MKII is a custom built chute directing them in a much more orderly fashion. It can be used w/ an original cradle to keep fired brass in check & not broadcast over such a lg. area. You will find a few exciting & informative videos featuring this firearm at our website (click here). UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: spare MKII flash hider/muzzle booster, short muzzle booster to be utilized as a blank adapter & a modified A/N M2 booster. An original aircraft cradle w/ an aluminum adapter for a Vickers tripod. Custom cocking handle. 2 Spare bbls. 1942 dated ammo can. 6 US cloth belts. Sm. assortment of links both modified US mfg. & original British. Spare feed cover. Feed tray for utilizing cloth belts. Custom chute for spent casings. 2 Spare recoil springs. Several wrenches & tools utilized in maintenance & operation. Spare bolt, bbl. extension & accelerator. Assortment of several sm. replacement parts. Original style backplate cover as used in flex mounting. Custom Browning cloth belt loader. Technical Manual 9-1205. Author signed copy of the Browning Machine Gun Vol. 2. & reprint of Desirable Catalog & Hand Book on Colt Automatic Machine Guns and Rifles. CONDITION: this is a truly remarkable & exciting original example of an uncommon WWII machine gun. An original C&R transferable example that is as at home on a firing line w/ its incredibly high cyclic rate as it is in the few museums where they reside. The finish coverage is complete w/ thinning in only a few areas w/ ever so light patina present on the top cover. The original mfg. markings are deep, bold & easy to read. The open bolt fire control mechanism appears to function correct when cycled by hand. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIRARMS ACT LMG REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. (03-1447/JZ). CLASS III. $10,000-15,000.

CSRG MODEL 1918 CHAUCHAT MG.

Lot # 1010 (Sale Order: 10 of 693)

Cal. 8mm Lebel. S# 78309. Bbl. 22" w/ flash hider. Mfg. by CSRG. Matching S#’s on receivers. Magazine, marked “SA” indicates it saw Finish service. In the opinion of this...more cataloger, the Chauchat may have had numerous disadvantages on the battlefield but they don’t necessarily translate to the experience of the recreational shooter at the range. Front sight is a fixed offset post & rear tangent sight graduates from 200 to 2300 meters. This simple open bolt mechanism in a tubular style receiver is extremely heavy as such a sharp recoiling rd. necessitates. Most problems parroted by history books revolve around the skeletal magazine style for their obvious flaw of allowing natural debris to enter the mechanism. It’s not such an issue at a range setting or as part of a working museum or reference collection. This extremely early design is an exciting part of history that enjoys a reasonable price while most others no longer do. CONDITION: overall finish is an extremely even brown w/ the exception of the charging handle & the interior of the flash hider. Vertical pistol grip has numerous dings & dents as do the strong hand pistol grip & stock though function does not appear to be hindered or disadvantaged. The bore appears heavily fouled though the rifling remains extremely strong. Mt. for front bipod, though bipod is absent, indicates it was originally issued w/ one. (03-1427/JZ). UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: factory box w/ Cobray stylized styrofoam insert contains original operator's manual, mag. loader & cleaning rod. CONDITION: parkerizing is dark & completely covers all external surfaces. Though this firearm appears to have had very little use, the bbl. has 2 bulges approx. 1/2" apart, probably caused by a squib followed by a live rnd. The bbl. deformation is hard to see w/ the gun assembled, but most obvious looking down the bore & upon disassembly. The thin factory rubber buffer is crumbling, which is normal over long periods of storage. (03-1451/JZ). NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT MG REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. DARNE 1931 MG.

Lot # 1017 (Sale Order: 17 of 693)

Cal. 7mm. S# 6999G. Bbl. 25". The Darne MG was mfg. from the early 1900’s through the 1930’s. This particular example was mfg. after the armistice w/ developmental assist...moreance from the French Army engineering services. This company, once famous for their well known shotgun developed a military division to join their hunting division & started producing up to 1,500 machine guns per month. This example appears to be an aircraft version. Left side feed, belt fed, gas operated w/ an adjustable port. Receiver is marked “7.7” above the cocking handle. Numbers match on the receiver, feed mechanism & even the bbl. As w/ most machines mfg. in this time frame, it is heavy & well made. Rear of receiver on top marked w/ Darne scroll logo & “1931” as well as the S#. CONDITION: original dark blue finish still covers the majority of exposed metal surfaces though a period accurate patina has visited most areas at some point before being controlled. Though the paperwork indicates it is a transferable C&R MG, at some point an attempt was made to limit its function. The chamber appears to be plugged w/ brass which is not uncommon & the bbl. appears to be brazed to the receiver. This cataloger has seen far more difficult attempts to silence such a firearm reversed. Bore appears fouled but retains strong rifling. (03-1433/JZ). THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT CURIO & RELIC REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. $1,500-3,000.

Cal. 45 ACP. S# 111265. Bbl. 10". VERY RARE GILBERT EQUIPMENT USAS-12 NFA.

Lot # 1023 (Sale Order: 23 of 693)

Cal. 12 Ga. S# A0000763 SA. Bbl. 18”. The USAS-12 is a mag. fed shotgun w/ an interesting history. While it loosely resembles the iconic AR-15, especially in the upper po...morertion of the receiver utilized as a carry handle, there is much more to its appeal. During the Clinton administration, there was an effort to push gun control through the Executive Branch w/out going through Congress. After teaming up w/ Lloyd Benson as his new Secretary of the Treasury, they moved forward by changing policy through the BATF, which was a department of the Treasury at that time. Understanding law current to this day, any firearm w/ a bore diameter of over 1/2" is considered a destructive device unless receiving an exemption under the sporting purposes clause. Several popular shotguns including the USAS-12, the Spas-15, the Street Sweeper & Striker-12 were determined to no longer be "sporting" guns therefore reverting them to destructive devices, necessitating long waiting periods & background checks, submission of fingerprints & passport photos. With a stroke of the pen, these normal 12 Ga. shotguns would immediately be classified as and treated like grenade launchers & bazookas. For a short period of time following this new determination, owners of these newly prohibited firearms were allowed to register them & get them on the books free from the normal ATF fees. While many people participated in the registry & even took advantage of the new destructive device status superseding bbl. length laws, eventually the registry was closed & any that were not registered during this amnesty period became contraband unless they were separated from the receivers or destroyed. Shrouded post front sight, rear peep sight adj. for windage. Firearm marking accentuated in red. MAGS: 3 - 10 rd. orig. box mags. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Daewoo original owner’s manual & warrantee card. Vol. 5, No. 5 (February, 2002) issue of "Small Arms Review" magazine featuring an autographed article on this firearm. CONDITION: bbl & exposed metal parts are parkerized retaining complete coverage throughout w/ the exception of some minor thinning on high areas. Receiver section resembles a grayish bead blasted finish. Plastic furniture is solid w/ only a few light scratches. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. PROVENANCE: Mark Genovese Collection. (03-1442/JZ). MODERN. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT NFA REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. $2,500-3,500.

The USAS-12 is a mag. fed shotgun w/ an interesting history.
