THOMAS GRISWOLD SWORD BLADE W/ UNASSOCIATED

Lot # 1012 (Sale Order: 15 of 682)

SCABBARD. 1) BLADE. Overall length of blade: 35 1/2". This is a Confederate style sword blade made by Thomas Griswold of New Orleans. The blade is marked, "( )AS GRISWO...moreLD & CO." & is the rarely seen straight line mark. There is significant evidence of welding near the ricasso w/ visible bubbles in the steel. There is no tang or remnants of the hilt. Although the blade as a whole appears to be of Confederate mfg., we do not guarantee this to be an unaltered blade despite the angle of the grind on the base of the fuller & base of the edge. CONDITION: blade has a dark gray, cleaned mottled patina w/ evidence of grinding & possible sharpening. The area around the ricasso appears to be welded & possibly reshaped. 2) SCABBARD. Overall length of scabbard: 33 5/8". This is a very interesting & unquestionably original scabbard being somewhat reminiscent of a Griswold scabbard. This example has a heavy iron drag whereas Griswold scabbards have brass drags w/ a scrolled decoration at the top. The remaining entire body of the scabbard is brass. This scabbard is likely for an early European or European import saber. CONDITION: scabbard remains quite solid w/a few minor dents. (02-17539/BF). $400-700.

He served in Cincinnati and at Ft. Leavenworth in this capacity and rank till war’s end in 1865. I am not sure what a “proposal box was used for, but it is beautiful and elegant like Phelps fine penmanship seen in the numerous letters he wrote to Washington found in his National Archive service file. About 12” x 12” x 12” with locking lid, slot in top for papers to be dropped. Gold painted lettering and Victorian multicolor decorated designs.
