Lot # 2027 (Sale Order: 27 of 670)

TAKEDOWN RIFLE W/ ORIGINAL SCOPE. Cal. 303 Brit. S# 2604. Bbl. 26". There were only about 410 Fraser single shot dropping block rifles made. It was an elegant design & ex...moreamples are highly sought after. This rifle has 26" tapered rnd. bbl. fitted w/ full length rib. Rib is mounted w/ 1 standing 2 folding nested leaf express rear sight, scope blocks & gold bead front sight w/ flip up moon bead in raised portion of rib forming ramp. Top of rib engraved "Danl Fraser & Co." "Gun & Rifle Manufacturers" "4 Leith Terrace Edinburgh". British nitro proofs for .303 are on left rear. "Best" quality case hardened Frazer action (patent use # 322) has takedown lever on left side. Rotating it through 300 degrees allows bbl. to be unscrewed after removal of forend & while depressing operating lever, which is on right side of action. Action also features automatic top tang safety ("safe" on gold bar across action tang), background filled w/ blue enamel. Gold plated internals. W/ safety in fire position, a red enamel dot is visible on top tang. Action is engraved w/ near full coverage exceptionally well cut, varying sized medium to sm. shaded scroll w/in knotwork borders. S# is on trigger guard bow & top of action is engraved "Fraser's Patent" "No. 322". Well marbled & lightly figured flesh toned European walnut horn capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 1/4" over coarsely checkered horn buttplate. Stock features thin shadowline right hand cheekpiece & an inlet gold shield on toeline engraved w/ monogram "HCC" (H. C. Childers). Matching removable forend has horn tip w/ groove for attaching laced on sling & Deely type release. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: accompanying rifle is its original 16 1/2" telescopic sight which appears to be about 4x & has 1 vertical & 3 horizontal crosshair ranging reticle. Scope is numbered to rifle on bottom of rear ring & also has Fraser name & address along w/ "Sole Patentees & Manufacturers" engraved on top. Ocular lens is spring loaded to avoid injury to your eye when firing. Leather eye pad missing. CONDITION: good to fine as partially refinished, bbl. retaining nearly all of a rust reblue over some still visible marks & dings. Edges are softened a bit. Action retains perhaps 20 to 30% original case hardening color, which has muted in tone shading to gray brown at wear points. Stocks have been refinished in hand rubbed oil & retain nearly all of that finish. Sharp edges somewhat rounded, checkering recut. Bore is fair to good, strong Metford rifling, quite dark in grooves. Thumbpiece lever release is somewhat sticky, bbl. will not take down easily. Buttstock cracked in line w/ tangs, reinforcing bolt installed through cheeks of stock. Scope tube has been reblued over some scratches & a few marks, optically still fairly clear, undoubtedly still usable. This rifle is listed in "DANIEL FRASER Gun & Rifle Manufacturer of Edinburg, Scotland" by Jonathan Kirton on page 264, giving its basic description, including ribbed bbl. takedown feature, telescope & original owner. A copy of this book is included w/ the rifle. (20-1686/MGM26). CURIO. $7,500-12,500.

NORRIS MORGAN FN MAUSER RIFLE IN .338 WIN MAG.

Lot # 2036 (Sale Order: 36 of 670)

Cal. .338 Win. Mag. S# not visible. Norris built this rifle in 1960 & it exhibits the characteristics expected from the fine craftsman he had become. 24" #2 Douglas bbl. ...moreis fitted w/ sleeved on front sight ramp & sling eye in G&H style. FN model 98 Mauser type action is fitted w/ Lyman 57 receiver sight. Otherwise, action & bottom metal are unaltered. Stock exhibits Seymour Griffin's influence in design w/ swept shadowline right hand cheekpiece, steel grip cap, ebony forend tip, & point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders at grip & around forend. It seems that Morris was getting a bit older as checkering is not up to the quality of some of his earlier rifles (one needs exceptionally good eyesight to accomplish good checkering). UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rifle is accompanied by receipt, correspondence & cancelled check for Douglas bbl. CONDITION: very fine, appears to have been fired very little, retaining nearly all immersion blue on metal & w/ only a few minor marks & dings in hand rubbed oil finish stock. This issue features Norris Morgan in an article he wrote concerning his hobby - - - weapons. In it, he relates that the first rifle he made was for his wife to use. He used a Mexican Mauser action, a Springfield 4-groove bbl. & a fine piece of French walnut. The Springfield bbl. was shortened to 19" at both ends allowing rechambering for the then new (circa 1952) .308 Winchester cartridge. A sleeved on front sight ramp w/ gold bead & sling eye were installed. Top of bbl. is engraved "No. 1 Norris R. Morgan Stamford, Conn." Mexican Mauser action is fitted w/ Lyman 57 receiver sight, receiver ring stipled in usual "G&H" fashion, follower is engine turned. Bolt handle has been neatly turned down w/ knob neatly checkered in two panels. Flag safety is gold inlaid "FIRE" & "SAFE". Bottom metal has had bow nicely thinned & shaped. Nicely stump figured lightly mottled French walnut steel capped pistol grip stock measures 13 3/4" over checkered steel buttplate. Seymour Griffin's influence is evident w/ swept shadowline cheekpiece, ebony? forend tip, classic lines & point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders at grip & around forend. A vacant gold oval & sling eye are on toeline. Bottom of grip cap is nicely scroll engraved. Workmanship is quite good for someone's first custom stock. Grip checkering is quite well done, while checkering on forend has a few minor problems. The pattern he selected is extremely difficult, requiring lines to be kept parallel nearly all the way around the tapered forend; a very daunting task w/out lots of practice. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a copy of the "Illuminator" and Norris' inventory sheet for this rifle is included. CONDITION: fine to very fine. Metal parts retaining essentially all of their custom hot blue. There are a few minor marks & scratches in hand rubbed oil finish of stock. Bore is excellent, action is smooth. There is a photograph in the "Illuminator" w/ Arlene holding her rifle, copy included. (20-1673/MGM46). CURIO. $2,500-4,500.

Lot # 2040 (Sale Order: 40 of 670)

ATTRACTIVE STOCK OF FIDDLE FIGURED FRENCH WALNUT. Cal. 30-06. S# 2. This rifle has 24" medium weight sporter bbl., most likely supplied by Douglas, fitted w/ sleeved on "...moreG&H" type front sight ramp w/ milled sight protector over gold bead & sleeved on sling eye. Top of bbl. engraved "No 2 Norris R. Morgan Stamford, Conn." Cal. is engraved at rear. Model 98 large ring Mauser action has had top of receiver ring stippled & Lyman 48 receiver sight fitted. Bolt handle is turned down nicely reshaped & knob has 2 panels of checkering. Flag safety is inlaid "FIRE" & "SAFE" in gold. A "canjar" set trigger has been fitted. Bottom metal has had guard nicely shaped & thinned. Tip of floorplate is checkered. Guard screws are engraved. Stock of very attractively fiddle figured French walnut measures 13 7/8" over steel model 70 buttplate. Stock is styled in G&H fashion w/ steel grip cap which has bottom engraved. Stock also features horn forend tip well cut point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders at grip & around forend, & gold oval on toeline. His stock making skills have improved, w/ shaping closely approaching G&H quality, & checkering quite well done. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: included is Norris' inventory sheet for this rifle. CONDITION: excellent. Metal parts w/ nearly all their immersion blue, but w/ some slight freckling on bottom metal. There are only a few minor handling marks in oil finish of stock. Bore is excellent, action is smooth. (20-1674/MGM47). CURIO. $2,000-4,000.

"ONE MAN'S DREAM RIFLE", A FINE, WELL THOUGHT OUT

Lot # 2045 (Sale Order: 45 of 670)

CUSTOM MADE LEFT HAND BOLT RIFLE BY GENE SIMILLION MADE FOR NOTED GUN WRITER JAMES E. FENDER; THE SUBJECT OF A "GUNS" MAGAZINE ARTICLE WITH TRAVEL CASE, AMMO, DIES, & A L...moreIFETIME'S WORTH OF COMPONENTS. Cal. .425 Express (300 Win Mag. necked up to accept .423 diameter bullets, AKA .425 Ruger). S# 0260. Bbl. 24 1/2". Jim Fender is known to the readers of "The Double Gun Journal" & other magazines for his well-detailed & poignant articles covering a wide variety of subjects. His latest being a synopsis of the life & creations of Jean Samuel Pauley, the inventor of the base fire cartridge & its breech loading gun, forerunner to all modern breech loaders. Jim has been on many African safaris & has done a great amount of hunting in North & South America. He has taken nearly 40 cape buffalo. After years of experience he decided to build his once in a lifetime all-purpose rifle which is for sale here today. An article he wrote for "Guns" magazine in 1990 outlines his previous hunting experience with other rifles as well as the reasons how & why he built this truly fine left handed rifle in .425 Express. He also relates the personal interaction needed to complete the project. The 24 1/2" tapered octagon barrel is fitted with what appear to be integral quarter rib & front sight ramp. Rib is fitted with 1 standing leaf express rear sight with warthog ivory triangle as a sighting aid. An ivory bead is in front sight base. Beads are interchangeable & held in place by a spring loaded button at front of ramp. Top flat of barrel is engraved "Gene Simillion - Gunmaker". Gene's serial number (31) is at right rear & caliber is engraved on left. Dakota Arms "76" left handed action has been fitted with long top tang which extends over comb in H&H fashion. A nonautomatic safety is installed "in the right place" behind bolt on top tang ("SAFE" inlaid in gold) which locks bolt in closed position when engaged. Bolt body & follower are engine turned & knob is checkered in 4 round panels with some engraving at bottom. Standard trigger is retained & drop box bottom metal has hinged floorplate with retaining button in trigger guard bow. Stock of a fine piece of thin shell walnut with good grain flow through grip (that Jim had in possession for a long time) is nicely veined & has some figure in butt. Stock measures 14 3/8" over red Silver type pad & features classically styled shadowline left hand cheekpiece, steel grip cap with trap (spare front sights in trap), recoil bolts with extra recoil lug in barrel channel. Very nicely cut point pattern borderless checkering at grip & around forend & a sling eye in raised portion of stock on toeline along with a gold oval engraved "JEF". Gene Simillion's work in both metal & wood is beyond reproach with clean, sharp lines & attention to detail. Rifle is fitted with Zeiss "Diavari" - C 1.5-4.5x scope with duplex reticle & "Bock" (EAW) QD rings & bases. WEIGHT: 8 lbs. 15 oz. with 0 scope. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in a "Vermont Custom Cases" metal travel case lined in burgundy velvet with space for scope & bolt. Case contains 1 box of A Square "lion loads" & attachable wheels to aid transit as well as 2 keys. Also included are 2 orange "Contico" plastic boxes, 1 containing a large amount of unfired but formed cases, 10 boxes of 25 A-Square "lion load" bullets, Redding loading dies. The other box contains a number of fired cases, some loaded A-Square ammunition with "dead tough" bullets, .425 Ruger express loading dies, 2 boxes of A-Square ammunition loaded with monolithic solids, 16 boxes of A-Square 400 grain "dead tough" bullets, & a partial box of Cor Bon 350 grain spire point bullets. Also included are James E. Fender's notes, issue of "GUNS" magazine containing previously mentioned article, & table display of article. CONDITION: very fine. His notes relate "the rifle is extremely accurate, & has been hunted extensively, but never abused. It has accounted for Arctic grizzly, Dall sheep, & African plains game too numerous to mention." There is some very slight high edge wear to metal parts with a bit of flecking on top tang near comb. There are a few minor marks from handling in wood finish, most notably a 1/2" ding on cheekpiece & an area of small dings & scratches on left side near forend tip & in front of bolt. Scope mounts show marks from considerable mounting & dismounting. Bore is excellent, bright, sharp & shiny throughout. Mechanically excellent. Case is very fine with some marks, interior is excellent. An outstanding, great handling rifle. (20-2400/MGM62). MODERN. $10,000-15,000.
