VERY RARE, EARLY & FINE NO. 1 IMPROVED COLT

Lot # 3001 (Sale Order: 1 of 739)

PATERSON RING LEVER RIFLE. Cal. 36. S# 24. Bbl. 26 1/8" oct. This was the very 1st production model of any Colt by the Patent Arms Manufacturing Company, several months p...morerior to the production of any handgun. There are variants of this 1st model. This however, is the standard 1st model ring lever rifle with top strap over cylinder, with factory improvements of loading assembly (matching factory S#), and capping channel in frame. Improved 1st models are found on early and high serial numbers, though most do not have them. Only 200 of this earliest model were made 1837-1838. The ring lever turned the cylinder and cocked the internal hidden hammer. The 8-shot cylinder most often as on this example has rolled scene of horseman, centaur shooting deer and “COLT”. The browned 26 1/8” octagonal barrel has correct earliest address terminating with the ball and arrows “Colt’s Patent” and “Patent Arms M’g. Co., Paterson, N. Jersey” separated by correct floral motif. Cylinder, frame, backstrap, triggerguard, and ring lever are blued. Varnished nicely figured walnut stock is inset with a silver 4-headed Colt logo unique to this model rifle. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: specifications data sheet compiled by Bob Pershing in 2008. CONDITION: fine overall, thin original brown on barrel, address is light but discernible, strong traces of bright blue in protected areas of frame, top strap and ring lever. Cylinder rolled scene mostly discernible with patches of pitting. Stock is sound and retains most of old varnish finish, old glued toe repair w/ about 1" inset. Matching S# “24” is seen on back of cylinder, cylinder ring, loading lever flat, loading lever base inset into barrel, bottom toe of buttplate, and wedge. Further disassembly no doubt will locate more matching numbers, gun appears original and authentic in every regard. Mechanically fine, shiny seven land & groove rifling. This rifle must have traveled to Belgium in 19th century as there is Liege testing proof stamped on face of cylinder and side of barrel under loading arm. PROVENANCE: Greg Martin. (01-18830/JS). ANTIQUE. $30,000-50,000.

RARE & UNIQUE COLT PATERSON MODEL 1839 SADDLE RING

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 2 of 739)

CARBINE. Cal. 52. S# 761. Bbl. 24.5" hexadecagonal (16-sided) to round smoothbore. This may be the only 1839 Paterson carbine with original saddle ring bar, otherwise sta...morendard configuration. “The most practical of all Paterson firearms, the model 1839 carbine posted the simplest of mechanisms, and offered the greatest potential for mayhem to the target at the muzzle end. This efficient machine’s production total was rivaled only by the No. 5 Holster or Texas Model revolvers” as stated on page 203 Wilson & Levett's “Paterson Colt Book”. Marked on right side of barrel lug “Patent Arms M’g. Co. Paterson N.J.-Colt’s Pt” terminating on either side with “snake and star” motif. Loading lever obscures rolled address. Browned barrel, remainder of metal blued. Varnished walnut stock. 2.5" Cylinder with rounded shoulders with chamfered chambers. Heavy-duty 2-grooved wedge, rear sight is dovetailed fitted notched block, front sight is iron cone-shaped pin. CONDITION: very good overall, appears original and complete. Good markings, cylinder scene is mostly discernible. The saddle ring bar and attachments appear original, fit and patina are en suite with remainder of gun. If this was not done at the factory, it appears contemporary to use by trained mechanic or armory. Matching serial numbers are seen on cylinder, cylinder collar, barrel, wedge, and loading lever. Traces of original brown are found on barrel, overall plum/brown patina, remainder of metal is gray/brown patina. Mechanically fine, bright frosted smoothbore. (01-18832/JS). RARE & FINE BENJAMIN BIGELOW, MARYSVILLE,

Lot # 3003 (Sale Order: 3 of 739)

CALIFORNIA PILL LOCK REVOLVING RIFLE. Cal. 46. NSN. Overall 52.5". Bbl. 32.75" oct., stamped on top flat "B. BIGELOW, MARYSVILLE, CAL”. Benjamin Bigelow arrived in Califo...morernia in 1849 at the height of the gold rush & established a popular gun making trade till his death in 1888. Bigelow had previously apprenticed w/ William Billinghurst for 12 years learning the gun trade. Bigelow’s revolving rifle operates much like Billinghurst’s which used the Miller patent (1829) hand-turned cyl. & “mercury fulminate pill” ignition. Back action lock, iron mounted, walnut stock, blued bbl. & cyl.; case colored lock, frame, triggerguard, patchbox, & buttplate. The only markings other than maker’s name on bbl. is the back of the cyl. w/ corresponding 1-7 for each chamber & removable screwed-in plug. Very few Miller patent rifles were made, most by Billinghurst, no more than 2 or 3 are known by Bigelow & this is a very fine example retaining much of its original finish. Jim Servin wrote an interesting 1964 article on the California gun trade which is linked given the history of Benjamin Bigelow & his firearms production in the gold fields of California. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1999 appraisal document. CONDITION: fine to excellent overall, complete & original. Original blue to the bbl. & cyl. mostly turned plum, case colors mostly muted w/ balance mottled silver/gray. Stocks retain old varnish w/ minor cosmetic dings & dents, mechanically fine, crisp rifled bore w/ areas of pitting. Buckhorn rear sight, missing front sight, has dovetail slot. Patchbox mortise retains old, waxed patches. Original brass tipped ramrod has 3 piece iron/brass end w/ worm. There is an old sm. brass collection number “11” tacked to left side of stock. (01-18841/JS). ANTIQUE. $8,000-12,000.

ARMY OF REPUBLIC OF TEXAS TYPE. Cal. 44. S# 427. Bbl. 32.25" this rifle is pictured and described on pages 62-63 and 198 in Wilson & Levett “Colt Paterson Book”. This is ...morethe type of rifle with improved loading lever of which the Army of Republic of Texas purchased late in 1839. S# 427 has all the improvements seen on the ring lever models including large capping channel on right side of frame and double wedged frame. VERY FINE COLT PATERSON MODEL 1839 REVOLVING

Lot # 3005 (Sale Order: 5 of 739)

SHOTGUN. Cal. 62. S# 219. Bbl. 25" smoothbore. “The model 1839 shotgun is one of the most scarce of all Paterson firearms. It was also the most powerful and devastating o...moref basic models. The shotgun has always held a reputation for shock and the most frightful of wounds.” from Wilson, page 223, “Paterson Colt Book”. This is a beautiful example retaining much original finish with crisp markings. 3.5" Long cylinder is roll engraved with 3 panel design signed by Waterman L. Ormsby of deer, Indian, and eagle and shield motif along with “Patent Arms Manufactory / Paterson N. Jersey” and “COLT’S PATENT”. Right side of braised-on barrel lug has “snake and star” on either end of script patent markings. Capt. George J. Raines, US Marine Corps wrote a letter to Samuel Colt August 1840 after testing a shotgun: “Friend Colt, I have examined the gun called ”shot gun” and consider that weapon much more superior for war purposes [than] the carbine; inasmuch as it admits of being loaded with buck and ball cartridges which is the most efficient in Indian warfare. The carbine does not and the caliber is rather small while the bore of the shotgun is nearer to that of our muskets-- consequently can be loaded with the ball alone or buckshot or buck & ball a variety of which the musket commits and which is very desirable.” From page 53, Sutherland & Wilson “The Book of Colt Firearms” 1971. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1999 appraisal document. CONDITION: fine overall, matching serial numbers including buttplate screws and lower tang screw. The original Paterson wedge is numbered “88”. Barrel retains most of its original Damascene twist brown finish, barrel lug retains much thinning brown also. Frame retains about 20% bright blue finish, especially in protected areas. Stock is sound and well fit retaining most of its original varnish with scattered small dings, dents, and scuffs. Mechanically fine with bright shiny bore. PROVENANCE: Pottstown Antiques, Arms Show, 1999. (01-18834/JS). ANTIQUE.$20,000-30,000.

VERY RARE EARLY COLT PATERSON NO. 2 RING LEVER

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 7 of 739)

RIFLE. Cal. 44. S# 17. Bbl. 32.25". About 500 No. 2 ring trigger Paterson rifles were made. Very rare are the few early numbered guns with square back cylinder configurat...moreions such as this, according to Wilson in “The Paterson Colt Book”. This rifle is pictured and described on pages 194-195. S# 4 is another example with square back cylinder found at the VMI Museum. Visible improvements made on the No. 2 rifles include heavier thicker frame without top strap over cylinder. The barrel address is of same style found on pistols in the 1st Paterson production to use the “snake and star” found on Texas Patterson pistols. This motif is found on either end of script “Patent Arms M'g Co. Paterson NJ-Colt’s Pt”. Just like the 1st model the ring lever turned the cylinder and cocked the internal hammer. This very early 2nd model does not have capping channel cut out on recoil shield just like on 1st models. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1999 appraisal document. CONDITION: very good overall. Appears original and complete. Restoration of screws and trigger bow on bottom of frame. Metal overall is mottled gray/brown patina. Matching serial numbers are seen on cylinder, cylinder locking collar, barrel lug, wedge, and right side of ring lever. Toe of buttplate is numbered “3”. The cylinder has no rolled scene and is plain other than pair engraved concentric lines circling diameter. Address is well discerned, front section of star and snake design partially covered by rear sight. Dovetailed inset brass blade front sight is contemporary addition. Stock is sound, well fit with minor chipping at edges, 1" crack at toe, hand worn patina. Mechanics need attention, crisp rifled bore. (01-18838/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-30,000.

UNIQUE “ATTIC CONDITION” COLT PATERSON MODEL 1839

Lot # 3008 (Sale Order: 8 of 739)

REVOLVING SHOTGUN, FRESH FROM MAINE ESTATE WITH ORIGINAL RAMROD. Cal. 62. S# 50. Bbl. 28.5" smoothbore Damascus. The model 1839 shotgun is one of the rarest of all Paters...moreon firearms, amazing that there are two variants in this auction. It was the most powerful & devastating of Paterson arms. No more than 225 were manufactured; no two survivors are the same. This is an honest “as found” uncleaned example w/ dark patina & only example we are aware w/ original integral bottom rib w/ three pipes for ramrod. The standard 3.5" cyl. has longitudinal crack in one chamber which was an inherent flaw in Paterson cylinders as many were returned to Colt for repair. Right side of bbl. lug has script patent markings terminating w/ “snake & star” like on Texas Patersons. CONDITION: good overall. Matching serial number “50” found on back of cylinder & bbl. lug. Gun appears all original other than 2 screws but no other numbers were noted, not disassembled. Iron patina, patent markings & serial numbers well discerned. No discernible etched panel decoration on cylinder. Crack in one chamber as noted, integral bottom rib has detached solder for 2-3" near lug. Original unique ramrod has brass tips, flared at front. Stock has contemporary break repair from time of use w/ wood peg on right side just rear of frame, otherwise stock is sound & well fit retaining much of an old varnish finish. Traces of Damascene brown twist finish on bbl. is visible though mostly dark iron patina. Mechanically functional w/ clear pitted bore. (01-19095/JS). ANTIQUE. $12,000-15,000.

MEYERS PINFIRE REVOLVING CARBINE.

Lot # 3009 (Sale Order: 9 of 739)

Cal. approx. 60. NSN. Bbl. 22 1/2". Joseph Guillaume Meyers of Liege, Belgium has numerous patents for firearms between the years 1866 & 1879. This is a rare example of a...more 6 shot, revolving cylinder, pinfire carbine that likely had military applications because of the 2 3/4" bayonet lug on the right side of the bbl. The frame is marked on the left side, in front of the cyl., “MEYERS BREVETE”. Both the cyl. & frame are heavily embellished w/ engraving. There is a fanciful trigger guard that encompasses a lg. trigger. The stock is checkered at the wrist & has leaf carving where it joins the frame. There is an iron buttplate & iron sling swivels. CONDITION: the bbl., as well as all other iron parts, has a medium gray mottled patina w/ evidence of cleaned, very light pitting. The mechanics of this carbine seem to operate well. The wooden stock likely has an old refinish. An exceptionally scarce & interesting gun. (01-19089/BF). ANTIQUE. $6,000-7,500.

DESIREABLE COLT 3RD MODEL DRAGOON CUT FOR

Lot # 3016 (Sale Order: 16 of 739)

SHOULDER STOCK. Cal. 44. S# 17066. Colt produced only about 1500 of these 3rd models that were cut for shoulder stock & equipped w/ three position carbine sights on the b...morebl. Manufactured in 1858, most, if not all, saw Civil War use & are seldom found in untouched condition. This gun is one of the earliest Colt Dragoons to have the improved horizontal rammer latch which was modified in the early 17000 serial range. It retains all original matching serial numbered parts, including the bbl. wedge & is in near excellent mechanical condition. All numbers & markings are sharp & clear, including the "US" stamped below "COLTS PATENT" on the frame & two of the original safety pins remain on the cylinder. CONDITION: the bore is fair & shows some pitting, the exterior of the gun shows scattered minor denting w/ an even, brown patina. The walnut grips are near excellent, w/ only modest wear, & show no cracks or chips on the corners. Overall, the gun appears untouched & in a natural aged condition. Approximately 20% of the cylinder scene remains & all nipples are in good condition & appear original to the date of manufacture. The action is smooth & locks up tight. This is a very nice example of the rare shoulder stock variation of the Colt Dragoon that is unmolested. (01-18684/CL). ANTIQUE. $7,000-11,000.

Lot # 3019 (Sale Order: 19 of 739)

Cal. 44. S# 1442. Bbl. 7 1/2". S# stamped over tiny Colt number 2517. There is a sm. “70” stamped on bottom of bbl. at well & “31” stamped on loading arm. S# on cyl. is also stamped over 2517. The grips have penciled “1442” in channel & appear to retain traces of original Colt varnish. Wedge is numbered “971”. This is an unusual configuration, but most parts appear to be original Colt. RARE CASED & UNIQUE FLORAL ROCOCO ENGRAVED

Lot # 3021 (Sale Order: 21 of 739)

EXPOSITION, COLT LONDON POCKET MODEL PERCUSSION REVOLVER. Cal. 31. S# 26. Bbl. 5". This is a very rare and beautifully engraved Colt Model 1849 most likely made for the D...moreublin Exposition of 1853. The engraving style is unique with floral and rococo designs. The barrel address is hand engraved in unique small lettering not seen on any other revolver. London proofs were added after engraving as the normal proof on right side of barrel housing is found in unengraved area below wedge slot which is not noted on any other specimens. Deluxe grips are nicely burled with fine color. The casing also has unique carved mother of pearl flower shaped compartment knob not seen on any other specimen. Larry Wilson in his Colt Engraving text shows this gun and states there are three types of London engraving and cites this example as being the rarest if not unique. Gun appears original, complete and authentic as manufactured though serial number on cylinder does not match balance of gun though still two digits “95”. There are other Colt exhibition guns known with unserialized cylinders, this gun possibly was rushed for the exposition and this was the cylinder available. Most likely this is the only Model 1849 with this style of engraving as made for the Dublin Exposition in 1853 and this 2 digit gun was first year produced in London. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rare early London oak casing; has no provision for cleaning rod, and no mortise cut for bullet mold sprue cutter. Case contains near new Dixon bag flask with virtually all of its original varnish, a 2-cavity "COLTS PATENT" brass bullet mold, L-shaped combination gun tool, original pack of caps with Eley Brothers paper label and original 5-cartridge pack of Colt cartridges. Also included in this lot is a copy of “Fine Colts, The Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection”. CONDITION: extremely fine overall, all matching with exception of cylinder as noted. Barrel retains about 95% bright blue finish with crisp markings. Cylinder has traces of thin blue with crisp, complete rolled “Stagecoach Holdup” scene with balance silver/blue patina. Frame and hammer retain most of their original muted case color with balance silver/gray. Trigger guard and backstrap retain virtually all their silver plate. Grips retain virtually all their original factory varnish with light edge wear and a few sm. dents. Accompanying case is very good overall with vacant scalloped brass plaque, blue velvet interior is very good with light fading, there are several repairs to velvet lining wear worn through apparently in revolver compartment, sides to lidded compartment are bowed out slightly with old glued repair. Mold and gun tool are both very good and smooth overall, gun tool retains about half its finish. Cap tin is empty but discernable label, cartridge pack is very good and complete. The pre-Colt contract Dixon flask is excellent retaining virtually all varnish & bright fire blue to spring. PROVENANCE: Raymond Kendall Collection; pictured on pages 230, 239 & 240 of Wilson’s “Colt Engraving Book Volume I” (Though Wilson misidentifies serial number); Pictured on page 87 of the 1999 “Fine Colts, The Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection” as frontis showing this example as epitome of English engraving of London Colts. (01-17677/JS). ANTIQUE. $16,500-19,5000.
