This rifle appears to be a repro of a York County school Kentucky rifle originally built by the well known George Schroyer. It has 45" swamped oct. bbl. fitted w/ one standing leaf rear & silver blade front sights & is engraved “W. WATSON” on top flat. Touch hole is unbushed. 1770 Style lock has serpentine cock inset oct. pan, bridled frizzen, & feather spring w/ leaf finial. Triggers are double set, firing trigger w/ turned blade. Stock of a fine piece of curly maple extends to muzzle w/ brass cap & exhibits carved fields around lock & sideplate & some raised carved scroll either side of classic small fluted cheekpiece. Stock attaches to bbl. w/ 3 sliding brass bolts. Ramrod channel is nicely outlined w/ small beads. All furniture is brass. Triggerguard has finger scroll at grip. Buttplate is of an early, heavy style & there is a 3 piece patch box on right side of stock w/ pierced circular finial w/ floral top. Patch box is nicely scroll engraved & has checkered shading. A man’s head is engraved in central portion of finial. Rectangular cover has button release in top tang of buttplate. Heavy shaped sideplate is also nicely engraved. Hickory ramrod is held by 3 oct. beaded pipes & matching thimble. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: file of information on Wayne P. Watson & his rifles. CONDITION: exceptionally fine, retaining nearly all maker applied finishes w/ only a few minor handling marks. Does not appear to have been fired, however frizzen shows multiple flint strikes. Triggers set. Lock is operable. Bore bright & shiny. (01-20042/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
