RARE CIVIL WAR 5 POUND KETCHUM GRENADE.

Lot # 3034 (Sale Order: 35 of 634)

Among the great ordnance oddities of the Civil War were the Ketchum patented hand grenades. They came in three sizes, 5 lbs being the largest. The elongated iron body has a pewter percussion fuse system & a wooden tail w/ cardboard fins. Hand grenade was thrown w/ the fins stabilizing flight such that the grenade would land directly on plunger nose first for detonation. They could not be thrown very far, so their use was quite limited. They were used in several attacks at Port Hudson where Union forces soon learned their limitations. At the battle of the Priest Cap, Union soldiers threw the grenades up over the works & after the Confederate defenders figured out how they worked, they rigged blankets to catch them. The Confederates could now use their Ketchum grenades & hurled them down upon the hunkered down Yankees to great effect. Relic hunters digging this particular breastwork only found fragments of this peculiar weapon in front of the Confederate works where poor Union troops became trapped. CONDITION: body of projectile is in fine condition including pewter fusing all painted black. Set of wooden & cardboard fins are complete though soiled & delicate at bends, one corner is missing on one fin, fins are correctly marked w/ patent information “..ENTED AUG. 20 1861” The plunger is a fabrication & not original but is properly made for display. (02-15475/JS). $2,000-3,000.

RARE & HISTORIC CIVIL WAR 35 STAR GUIDON FOR 2ND

Lot # 3037 (Sale Order: 38 of 634)

MASS CAVALRY MADE BY A.W. POLLARD, BOSTON, MASS. Regulation Civil War 35-star cavalry guidon, 27” on hoist & 41” on fly, maker marked by A.W. Pollard & Co. of Boston who contracted for many other Massachusetts flags. 35 Stars became official July 4, 1863 & were used until the end of the war. Company K of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry was made up mostly of Boston-area men & left for Baltimore, Maryland February 12, 1863, & proceeded to Fort Monroe thence to Gloucester Point opposite Yorktown Virginia. It is not known how the family who originally sold this flag obtained it, but research has shown that a descendent was the niece of Capt. Goodwin A Stone of Co. K who was wounded on July 4, 1864, at Aldie, Virginia & died about 2 weeks later. Stone’s mother & brother visited him before he died, it is conjecture that the mother ended up w/ the flag & that it was descended to her daughter, Eliza Stone Marchant; then to their ancestor Louisa Marchant. Regardless of history, this is a rare survivor of the Civil War. Archivally framed w/ conservation report. CONDITION: very good overall as conserved, good colors, only minor losses & fraying, at least 2 holes appear to be from bullets, staining, photographs of flag pre-conservation are in report, which is available online. (02-15946). $10,000-20,000.

OUTSTANDING CIVIL WAR REGIMENTAL FLAG FOR THE

Lot # 3038 (Sale Order: 39 of 634)

UNION RIFLES WHICH BECAME PART OF THE 10TH NEW JERSEY INFANTRY. This beautiful flag measures 61" x 56" including 2 1/2" of gold fringe on 3 sides. It is housed in a gold finished frame measuring 67" x 63". The frame has a 2 3/8" medallion in each corner decorated w/ an American flag. The 34 star flag became official on July 4, 1861 & remained the official United States flag until July 4, 1863. These facts tell us that this regimental flag was likely made between July 4, 1861 & July 4, 1863. Above the Seal of New Jersey is a ribbon that reads, “PRESENTED BY THE LADIES OF LUMBERTON TOWNSHIP”. A ribbon below the seal reads, “TO THE UNION RIFLES”. The Union Rifles of New Jersey appear to be from the Newark area & joined the 10th New Jersey Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The 10th New Jersey served honorably & fought in the Battle of the Wilderness, Battle of Spotsylvania, Battle of Cold Harbor, Battle of Strasburg, Battle of Fisher's Hill, Third Battle of Winchester, Battle of Cedar Creek & Third Battle of Petersburg. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a lg. file of paperwork & provenance come w/ this fine flag that includes excerpts of early New Jersey military history, information on Captain Johnson of the 10th New Jersey, ownership provenance & much more. CIVIL WAR 34 STAR FLAG, FAIR OAKS, VIRGINIA.

Lot # 3039 (Sale Order: 40 of 634)

“FAIR OAKS” VIRGINIA BATTLE HONOR. Totally hand sewn wool bunting flag by Brooklyn sail maker George W. Gerau, 1862-1863. Flag was deaccessioned by Valley Forge Historical Society (now the Museum of the American Revolution). Flag is exceptionally well crafted w/ inset cut through twilled wool lettering & cotton stars. This flag was originally given to the Rev. W. Herbert Burk (1867-1933), the founder & curator of the Valley Forge Historical Society. Burk’s main interest of course was the American Revolution, but he collected all American historical objects (Making a Museum-Confessions of a Curator, 1926). Unfortunately, the original donation card is lost, but a 2015 transcription reads “Rev. Mr. Burk / Yours of the 11th rec’d. / I will send flag. As I wrote you / that my late Husband had the / flag made on his return home / wounded from Fair Oaks VA, we / had a great time one day, the day / that flag was raised and how we / enjoyed seeing it blow out thus / showing the lettering”. It also goes on to state his service as a first lieutenant in the 61st Regiment New York Volunteers, also the 22nd United States Colored Troops, acting assistant inspector general of the colored brigade & a first lieutenant in the Veteran Reserve Corps. A little detective work may find the original donor. Battle of Fair Oaks fought May 31 – June 1, 1862, produced over 5,000 casualties, killed & wounded. The 61st New York alone had 100 casualties. The soldier who survived this terrible fight had means to buy this very expensive flag as a memorial to his survival. Flag measures 77” on hoist, 157” on fly. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Conservation report. CONDITION: good to very good. Excellent color, light soiling, minor reductions other than linen hoist, which is heavily frayed & only partially intact, but enough to read most of the maker’s mark. One large handmade brass grommet is still intact at bottom edge of hoist. (02-15947). $5,000-8,000.

WELL PROVENANCED UNKNOWN TENNESSEE COMPANY

Lot # 3040 (Sale Order: 41 of 634)

CAPTURED CONFEDERATE FIRST NATIONAL FLAG. Pictured as color plate 118 & described on pgs. 400-401 in the recently released book by University of Tennessee Press “Civil War Flags of Tennessee”, a monumental work and a project 20 years in the making. The capture of this flag is described in the August 13th 1862 Nashville Daily Union newspaper. It was taken home by Capt. Charles Gibbs of the 69th Ohio. The regiment itself served in Nashville from June 29, 1862 to July 31, 1862 before moving off to somewhere else. After the capture it was displayed in the Newcomb tavern in Dayton. The structure still stands today as the oldest building in Dayton. An old, inked note from the family, which has stayed w/ the flag, provides a bit of its capture history & states “Souvenir hunters have practically ruined it” while on exhibit in the Tavern. According to an analysis that accompanies flag the family note has some incorrect information. The flag had at least 7 stars based on analysis plus possibly more in quadrants & center. We know Capt. Gibbs took the flag from the store of a grocer John H. Buddeke (1808-1887). Capt. Gibbs does not mention the unit designation, so he likely did not know it. Researching John Buddeke, we find he has a son John H. Buddeke Jr. (1844-1912) who would have been 17 years old when the war began. There is a J. H. Buddeke listed in a Tennessee Artillery in 1861. Mrs. John H. Buddeke was on a committee to equip a local battalion of cavalry “Marion Guards”, though there is no mention or description of their flag known. Most company flags will never be identified but this souvenired Nashville flag may not always be a mystery due to so many potential clues. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: research on connection of Buddeke family & Marion Dragoon; lg. file of research along w/ the original letter that accompanied flag. / Copy of photograph of Capt. Gibbs at a reunion in later years w/ his comrades. / Scan of newspaper article describing the capture of the flag. / Brief soldier history from American Civil War research database. CONDITION: of the portion remaining, the blended cotton/silk (weft/warp) red material is sound, the same material is used on both red bars as can be seen in photographs where one side is more salmon in color. Remaining blue silk is sound w/ remnants of gold & red paint at edges of souvenired areas. White silk is fragile w/ reductions as can be seen at fly. Flag currently measures 86" on fly, & 57" on height. Flag is missing hoist & about 10" of top red bar along w/ most of canton which only outlines of 3 approx. 7" stars can be seen. The flag is totally machine sewn w/ exception of folded fly edges which are folded over & finished w/ hand stitch. We can estimate the total size of this flag would have been approx. 68" on hoist & 90" on fly. Ratios of early Civil War flags are sometimes closer to square than 3:2 as we think of today based on other surviving flags. Confederate unit flags varied dramatically in dimensions from almost square to over 2:1 (fly:hoist). PROVENANCE: Captain Charles Gibbs captured flag August 12th 1862, Nashville, TN; Displayed Newcom Tavern, Monument Street, Dayton, OH; Gary Delscnap, Kettering, OH who purchased it circa 1980 from descendants of Capt. Gibbs; Michael Simens Historical Antiques, Willoughby, OH; Ron Grieve Collection 2010. (02-15709/JS). $7,000-9,000.

19TH CENTURY REUNION BATTLEFLAG MADE BY WIFE OF

Lot # 3042 (Sale Order: 43 of 634)

RICHMOND CONFEDERATE SOLDIER. A very interesting feature of this flag is that it was made from the same single ply bunting used in Richmond to make ANV (Army of Northern Virginia) battle flags. Just like regulation ANVs, the red bunting came in 18" loomed width & is pieced identically. Flag is made in the same style but larger w/ double appliqué 6" white cotton stars, 3/8" twill fimbriation along the cross. 1" Cotton hoist has 3 handmade copper grommets added after manufacture, as one grommet partially obliterates the ink inscription “Made by Mrs. L. B. Edwards'' & “Richmond Post / UDC”. Mrs. L.B. Edwards was the wife of Dr. Landon Brame Edwards who entered service in Drewry's Company, Virginia Artillery (Southside Artillery) in 1863 till war’s end. A file of notes & history accompany the flag including great-great grandson’s comments about the flag & Dr. Edwards. Dr Edward’s wife, Nancy Pettyjohn Rucker Edwards (1845-1898), made this flag w/ a treadle sewing machine just like ANVs in wartime were made. She would have been 18 when ANVs were first being made, is it possible she was one of the contract seamstresses for Richmond depot? Amazingly, she had the same materials that Richmond clothing depot utilized otherwise. Regardless, rarely offered is a bona fide pre-1900 Confederate Veterans flag. 55" square plus 1" leading edge. CONDITION: fair-good as sewn to cotton backer. Good colors, soiling, stains, moth damage to wool bunting w/ largest reductions backed w/ red cloth. Total reductions about 5%. (02-15511/JS). $4,000-5,000.

EXCEPTIONAL CONFEDERATE COLLEGE HILL PRESENTATION

Lot # 3045 (Sale Order: 46 of 634)

OFFICER’S SWORD, KIA TENNESSEE OFFICER LT. COLONEL JAMES BOTTLES. Classic College Hill characteristic 30” bright “pen-knife” blade, long thin unstopped fuller w/ 22” etched thin foliate panels w/ 4” panel “CSA” inscribed: “Capt. J. L. Bottles / Ball Mt. Guards / 3rd E. Tenn. Regt.”, the finest survivor of any College Hill foot officer’s sword. The finely engraved inscription & crossed Confederate First National flags w/ “CSA” was done by a master, rarely seen on Southern swords. This pattern was made very early in war as General Felix Zollicoffer was wearing one when he was killed January 9, 1862. Nashville fell in February 1862 & College Hill swords ceased to be made. Choate’s Ford, TN was renamed Zollicoffer (now Bluff City) in honor of the fallen general. Ironically, Capt. Bottles carrying the same pattern sword when Zollicoffer was killed, was mortally wounded in a skirmish at Zollicoffer (Choates Ford) September 21, 1863. His gravestone reads: “Aged 38 years 5 m 4 days. Col. 26th Reg. Tenn Vol. CSA" On the battles gory field, When foes assailed our Southern land, His dauntless spirit would not yield, But boldly met the invading band”. Captain James L. Bottles (1838-1863) Captain Bottles raised & commanded the Ball Mountain Guards, 3rd East Tennessee Infantry at Haynesville, TN in June, 1861. He probably received this sword shortly thereafter. The unit was consolidated in September as Company B, 26th Regiment Tennessee Infantry. Most of his company was captured at Fort Donelson February 16, 1862 after suffering 96 casualties. Capt. Bottles was imprisoned at Johnson’s Island, Ohio. He was exchanged & reunited w/ his unit in late 1862 being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, dying from wounds received while in pursuit of Union raiders at Zollicoffer, TN September 21, 1863. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a small file of research on Capt. Bottles accompany sword. CONDITION: sword is fine overall, grip is complete w/ orig leather & twisted brass wire, uncleaned olive/dark mustard patina to brass mounts & hilt. Hilt has traces of gilt in protected areas. Bright brilliant blade w/ crisp etching. The orig scabbard leather body has restoration & drag is replaced but has matching patina to balance of brass mounts. (02-15399/JS). $20,000-30,000.
