1ST MODEL COLT DRAGOON REVOLVER CARRIED BY WILLIAM

Lot # 4001 (Sale Order: 1 of 530)

ROWE, 2ND ARKANSAS CAVALRY AND IMAGE OF HIM HOLDING REVOLVER AND PROVENANCE. Cal. 44. S# 3085. Bbl. 7 1/2" standard configuration, blue & case colors, silver plated grip frame. This is a very nice well documented example known. Soldier personalized revolver w/ iron tack design, small star on left grip & his initials W.R. on right. William also scratched his initials on backstrap “WFR”, “W” on left ear, “F” on top, & “R” on right ear. This was a very valuable gun even in its day & William wanted his name on it. It is very rare to see a photograph of a soldier holding the weapon he carried & he is proudly holding it across his breast in 9th plate tintype wearing enlisted cavalry shell jacket & forage cap w/ crossed saber insignia. It would be quite interesting to know how he came about this early Dragoon made in 1848. William F. Rowe (1843-1917) Born in Prussia, left his mother & father, immigrated by himself to America, landing in Fort Smith Arkansas December 7, 1859 at 16 years old. Enrolled in Company H, 2nd Arkansas cavalry September 7, 1863, & was mustered out Memphis Tennessee, August 1865. He lived his life, died & is buried at Fort Smith where he originally enlisted. When William mustered out in August 1865, he was charged $8 for retaining “pistol”, could this have been the pistol? This revolver was originally a civilian purchased from Colt in 1848. Could it have been captured during the war from Confederates & inventoried as US government property & reissued? There is indiscernible lightly scratched name on the butt w/ last initial “H” & a pair of initials scratched on the triggerguard “EH”. So, who had this gun originally w/ different last name? There is a wonderful article written in the Fort Smith Historical Society Journal in 1980 that is included w/ this lot. It details all the effects of William F Rowe. The article was written by his grandson who was 9 years old when William died, but still had vivid recollections of the war stories he was told. Nicholas J Kelly (1908-1982) the grandson died not long after this wonderful article was published, he had sold this pistol & other items for $3000 in 1970. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: accompanying this lot along w/ pistol and 9th plate tintype are US oval belt plate, GAR membership badge, GAR hat insignia, & GAR program from San Francisco 1886, all in shadowbox type frame. Revolver is nicely displayed in beveled casing w/ accessories. 1980 Fort Smith Historical Society Journal, 1970 letter from the Kelly selling the gun to Mr. Hodge along w/ other items. Manuscript genealogy showing descendants from William Rowe to Nicholas Kelly. There is a modern 20 x 24" color pastel copy of photograph, signed E. Gordon West. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, original, complete w/ matching serial numbers, traces of original finish in protected areas, iron now a smooth mottled streaked plum/brown patina, strong traces of silver in protected areas. Cylinder scene is mostly discernible. Grips are sound & well fit w/ moderate to heavy edge wear & remnants of old varnish finish. Markings are all crisp & discernible. Mechanically fine w/ crisp rifled bore. The accompanying compartmented casing is fair, refinished w/ numerous cosmetic blemishes, brown lining is loose, 2 cavity brass “COLT’S PATENT” mold is good w/ pitting on sprue cutter, round patent capper has dark mustard patina & functional, flask is poor unseamed & missing top w/ several small holes. (01-19824/JS). ANTIQUE. $10,000-15,000.

RARE & FINE 1848 COLT SECOND CONTRACT DRAGOON

Lot # 4002 (Sale Order: 2 of 530)

REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 2150. Bbl. 7 1/2". Long known as “Fluck” Dragoons after 1956 John Fluck article “Colt’s Hartford Walker”. Fluck contended that 300 Dragoons in the serial number range from 2216 through 2515 were replacements, which Colt was forced to supply for Walkers that had failed in service. These revolvers now are known to be 1848 2nd contract revolvers made by Colt, utilizing the same serial number dies used on civilian Walkers made by Whitney for Colt. There are several excellent accompanying articles which give details of these earliest Colt dragoons supplied to military w/ improvements made to the Walker model. All 2nd contract revolvers made were shipped in staggered lots in 1848. They were 1st issued to the 1st & 2nd US Mounted Rifles who saw hard service in the West. Of the 998 pistols made, survival is about the same as Walkers, w/ less than 150 examples currently documented. This is a nice representative, sharp original survivor. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: several copies of articles associated w/ this revolver & its contract. CONDITION: very good overall, appears complete & original w/ exception of pivot screw & loading lever catch. Matching S# throughout. Loading lever & bbl. have matching assembly number “40”. Sm/ inspection letter “P” is found on bbl., frame, cyl., loading lever arm, hammer, trigger guard & backstrap. Grips have 2 inspectors cartouches on either side, “WAT” (William A Thorton) & “NWP” (Nathan W. Patch). Markings all discernable including address, “COLT’S PATENT/U.S.” on frame. Iron has mixed gray patina w/ scattered areas of pitting, brass mixed medium mustard patina. Grips are sound & well fit w/ chips at front toes, moderate edge wear w/ discernable cartouches. Rolled dragoon fight scene is about 50% visible. Mechanically fine w/ crisp, rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Derek Provah Collection; Robert Howard Collection; Tom Power Collection, 2006. (01-19825/JS). ANTIQUE. $5,000-9,000.

RARE CASED & UNIQUE FLORAL ROCOCO ENGRAVED

Lot # 4009 (Sale Order: 9 of 530)

EXPOSITION, COLT LONDON POCKET MODEL PERCUSSION REVOLVER. Cal. 31. S# 26. Bbl. 5". This is a very rare & beautifully engraved Colt Model 1849 most likely made for the Dublin Exposition of 1853. The engraving style is unique w/ floral and rococo designs. The bbl. address is hand engraved in unique small lettering not seen on any other revolver. London proofs were added after engraving as the normal proof on right side of bbl. housing is found in unengraved area below wedge slot which is not noted on any other specimens. Deluxe grips are nicely burled w/ fine color. The casing also has unique carved mother of pearl flower shaped compartment knob not seen on any other specimen. Larry Wilson in his Colt Engraving text shows this gun & states there are 3 types of London engraving & cites this example as being the rarest, few examples & under 100 serial range on pocket models. Gun appears original, complete & authentic as manufactured though serial number on cylinder does not match balance of gun though still two digits “95”. There are other Colt exhibition guns known w/ unserialized cylinders, this gun possibly was rushed for the exposition & this was the cylinder available. Most likely this is the only Model 1849 w/ this style of engraving as made for the Dublin Exposition in 1853 & this 2 digit gun was first year produced in London. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rare early London oak casing; has no provision for cleaning rod, & no mortise cut for bullet mold sprue cutter. Case contains near new Dixon bag flask w/ virtually all of its original varnish, a 2 cavity "COLTS PATENT" brass bullet mold, L-shaped combination gun tool, original pack of caps w/ Eley Brothers paper label & original 5 cartridge pack of Colt cartridges. Also included in this lot is a copy of “Fine Colts, The Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection”. CONDITION: extremely fine overall, all matching w/ exception of cylinder as noted. Bbl. retains about 95% bright blue finish w/ crisp markings. Cylinder has traces of thin blue w/ crisp, complete rolled “Stagecoach Holdup” scene w/ balance silver/blue patina. Frame & hammer retain most of their original muted case color w/ balance silver/gray. Trigger guard & backstrap retain virtually all their silver plate. Grips retain virtually all their original factory varnish w/ light edge wear & a few sm. dents. Accompanying case is very good overall w/ vacant scalloped brass plaque, blue velvet interior is very good w/ light fading, there are several repairs to velvet lining wear worn through apparently in revolver compartment, sides to lidded compartment are bowed out slightly w/ old glued repair. Mold & gun tool are both very good & smooth overall, gun tool retains about half its finish. Cap tin is empty but discernable label, cartridge pack is very good & complete. The pre-Colt contract Dixon flask is excellent retaining virtually all varnish & bright fire blue to spring. PROVENANCE: Raymond Kendall Collection; pictured on pages 230, 239 & 240 of Wilson’s “Colt Engraving Book Volume I” (Though Wilson misidentifies serial number); Pictured on page 87 of the 1999 “Fine Colts, The Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection” as front is showing this example as epitome of English engraving of London Colts. (01-17677/JS). ANTIQUE. $10,000-15,000.

EXTREMELY FINE MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER WITH

Lot # 4017 (Sale Order: 17 of 530)

EXTREMELY RARE MATCHING 1ST MODEL CANTEEN STOCK. Cal. 36. S# 62638. There are only 5 or 6 examples known of Colt factory 1st model cut for stock navies, all made 1855-1856. This coordinates w/ 1st model shoulder stocks for Dragoon revolvers also made 1855-1856. The design for the stock closely follows that of the US Model 1855 pistol carbine w/ 2 prongs extending from the stock yoke to engage 2 slots in pistol’s backstrap & then secured by tightening knurled knob on bottom of yoke. The most common version, which was standard after 1857, required 4 screw frame, slotted butt strap & yoke extension on stock to fit into slot. This earliest 1st model design w/ out yoke & 3 screw frame is more complex to manufacture requiring steel grip frame. Like the other 2 known 1st models, trigger guard is fitted w/ sling swivel as is stock. The special order revolver has Colt factory German silver front sight fitted in dovetailed slot & deluxe burled walnut grips. Revolver has matching serial number 62638 on every part normally numbered w/ exception of loading arm 2639 & cylinder numbered 62689. Unique canteen stock has silver plated yoke w/ matching serial number 62638, silver plated brass buttplate has serial number, probable factory error 62628. Two small sling swivels are fitted in stock, one on yoke & one on oval escutcheon. This is the only example of the 1st model Colt Navy shoulder stock w/ pistol we are aware ever offered in auction. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 6 page R. L. Wilson letter detailing rarity & its discovery in Scandinavia about 1995. CONDITION: extremely fine overall. Revolver retains about 95% bright factory blue on bbl., about 40% blue on cyl., muted case colors on frame, hammer & loading lever. There is rust & pitting on two of the sling swivels on pistol & stock where, according to the accompanying letter, stated original leather sling had been attached for decades causing the corrosion. There is also corrosion on slightly flat trigger bow & other areas on grip frame & one streak on cylinder which does not affect overall aesthetic of this great rarity. Burled grips retain most all of their factory varnish w/ light edge wear but varnish worn through in 2 crescents where yoke attached. Mechanically fine w/ crisp bright rifled bore. Stock retains most of its original silver plate on yoke, buttplate, & rear sling swivel escutcheon. Stock retains 95% original factory varnish w/ scattered small dings & dents & 3" long gouge on right side. Canteen screw in plug & attached chain are intact & functional. (01-19959/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-25,000.

PRESENTATION PAIR COLT NAVY REVOLVERS TO GUSTAVUS

Lot # 4018 (Sale Order: 18 of 530)

SNIPER WITH OIL ON CANVAS ESCUTCHEON. Cal. 36. S#’s 111188/111225. This beautiful pair of Colt Model 1851 Navy revolvers are standard configuration & are fine crisp examples w/ identical presentations on backstraps of each revolver: "PRESENTED TO MAJ. G. SNIPER 101ST REGT N.Y. VOLS BY HIS / LATE COMMAND CO. E 51ST REGT NYSM". Pistols are displayed in mahogany casing w/ accessories. There is a lone monumental equestrian statue in Syracuse, New York & that is of German Emigre Sniper (1836-1894) where he resided. Sniper had local military career, first in the Syracuse Light Guards in 1854 & volunteering in 1861; when the war began as captain of the local 51st NY in Army of the Potomac facing Robert E Lee in the Seven Days battles. Capt. Sniper, 26 years old would return home, marry & start a family, but soon returned to service as Major in 101st NY when these revolvers were presented in February 1862. Sniper would stay in Syracuse though 1863 but would join the newly formed 185th NY in his county as Lieut. Col. & would serve under Gen. Joshua Chamberlain. Sniper’s 185th left Syracuse in September 1864, joining the Army of the Potomac during its siege of Petersburg, Va. The regiment saw action there in skirmishes at Burgess Farm, Hatcher’s Run & Watkin’s Farm. The regiment saw its heaviest action, suffering more than 200 casualties, at a place called Quaker Road on March 29, 1865, as Grant pressed Lee’s right flank. During the battle, Union forces were initially being repulsed. The brigade commander of the 185th, Gen. Joshua Chamberlain, anxiously asked Colonel Sniper if his regiment could “save the day.” Sniper replied “he would try”, and the 185th launched a counter-attack. While carrying the regimental flag, the unit’s color-bearer, Benton H. Wilson, was wounded twice. The sergeant of the color-company took over carrying the Stars & Stripes, but was killed in short order. Another member of the color guard seized the flag, but was immediately shot in the hand. Capt. Lathrop next grasped the colors, but was severely wounded in the foot. At this juncture, Sniper seized the flag & shouted, “Men of the 185th, forward!” They rallied, followed the gallant Sniper & the final advance was made, overrunning the Confederate position. Further action for the 185th occurred at the critical Union victory at Five Forks & eventually near Appomattox Court House. It was there, on April 9, 1865, just as Lee’s flag of truce to discuss surrender was being shown, that Lt. Hiram Clark of the 185th became the last man killed in the Army of the Potomac when a rebel shell took his life. Sniper & the 185th returned to Syracuse by train on June 3, 1865 and marched from the station in Vanderbilt Square to welcoming ceremonies in Hanover Square. The tattered remains of the silk flag that Sniper used to rally his men rests at the Onondaga County Courthouse. Sniper was brevetted Brig. Gen. for gallantry shown at the battle of Quaker Rd., March 29th1865. There was always a sincere measure of respect between members of the 185th & the former commander of their brigade, Chamberlain. In June 1899, Chamberlain traveled to Baldwinsville from Maine to address a reunion of the 185th. After the war, Sniper’s reputation as a leader & his popularity among the city’s German-American community propelled him into government service. He served three terms in the state assembly, was elected county clerk and eventually a deputy collector of internal revenue. Sniper died unexpectedly in his North Side home, at 504 Prospect Ave., in 1894, just a few blocks from where his statue would be unveiled in 1905 – a civic project sponsored by local veterans & designed by Syracuse architect Charles E. Colton & sculpture by Frederick Moynihan. Framed oil escutcheon (37" x 31") details Sniper’s Civil War career & rarely found are these oil on canvas examples, most were on preprinted paper as cost of an original painting was high. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: folder of paperwork relating to Gustavus Sniper. CONDITION: revolvers are both very good overall w/ crisp edges & markings, traces of original finish can be found in protected areas, role cyl. scenes are mostly discernible. Safety pins on cyls. all functional, though one is smashed on serial number 111188. Grips retain most of their original factory varnish. Both revolvers are mechanically fine w/ crisp rifled bores. The accompanying casing has soiled & stained lining. The angled spout “COLT’S PATENT” panoply of arms flask retains much of its original varnish. Mold, cartridge pack, cap tin & L-shaped tool are good overall. Casing has partially detached hinges but otherwise is sound. Escutcheon is fair to good overall w/ several sm. holes in canvas, painted text discernible. PROVENANCE: Sniper Family Estate; Vinny Caponi; ex-Tom Carter Collection; estate collection Gary Parietti. (01-19784/JS). ANTIQUE. $7,000-9,000.
