EXCEPTIONAL UNIQUE VARIANT ROUND CYLINDER CASED

Lot # 4025 (Sale Order: 26 of 530)

FACTORY ENGRAVED COLT ROOT MODEL 1855 SIDEHAMMER PERCUSSION REVOLVER WITH IVORY GRIPS. Cal. 28. S# 26592. Bbl. 3 1/2". Standard configuration of late 1861 manufactured factory engraved (attributed to Gustav Young) w/ 3 1/2" oct. bbl., brass tapered pin front sight, 2 line Hartford address. 5 Shot cylinder has rolled ”Indian and cabin” scene & single line patent mark. Beautifully engraved w/ foliate scrolls having finely pearled backgrounds, mounted w/ smooth 1 piece "certifiable antique elephant ivory" grip. . This beautiful cased revolver & accessories would be difficult to upgrade. Malcolm Burnette in his fantastic text “Collector’s Guide to Colt Root Sidehammer” states that this revolver falls in serial range of a model 3 (S# 25478-30000) & should have fluted cylinder. Every characteristic of this revolver is model 3 except the exception of round cylinder. Serial numbers match on cylinder & gun is impeccable. I doubt there exists another minty factory engraved model 3 original w/ rnd. nonfluted cylinder. Burnette lists 13 distinct variants, if you want to have 14 distinct variants, this may be your opportunity. There is always exception to the rule especially if they paid extra for custom revolver & casing. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: accompanied by mahogany case, burgundy velvet lining, compartmented for the revolver from left to right showing the hammer which is unusual, elegant and rare “peacock” powder flask only found in Root casings, green label cap tin, brass bow-legged 2 cavity "COLT'S PATENT" mold with bright steel sprue cutter, oak handled spacer tool (Rapley T #20) & additional spacer tool/screwdriver (Rapley # 21). This beautiful cased revolver & accessories would be difficult to upgrade. CONDITION: extremely fine, revolver retains about 98% vibrant factory blue, only noted wear is at back toe, fine case colors on loading lever. Ivory grips well fit with slight play, small well patinaed chip in front toe. Mechanically fine with crisp bright bore. Casing is fine retaining much original varnish. Lining is heavily faded with soiling and wear at front sight and hammer spur. Flask is excellent retaining most of its original finish, mold is excellent with sprue cutter retaining most of its bright “white” finish, sprue retaining screw has most of its original fire blue. Both spacer tools retain portions of their original blue. (01-19960/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-25,000.

CASED ENGRAVED GOLD-PLATED CARVED IVORY COLT MODEL

Lot # 4026 (Sale Order: 27 of 530)

1860 FLUTED ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 5252. Standard configuration. Bbl. 8" w/ one line New York address which is only partially discernible, 1 piece "antique ivory" grip w/ relief carved Mexican eagle on left in oval. Nimschke style engraving w/ fine punch dot pearled background in nearly full coverage including cyl. w/ crossed hatched ovals w/ punch dots, engraved hammer emulates sea creature. This revolver was once purchased by the US Government during the Civil War. Like other Civil War veterans, some took their service weapon to New York shop like Nimschke’s & had it decorated & engraved. This revolver also descended in the family of a Swede who fought in Mexican Revolution w/ Poncho Villa, early 20th century. This revolver really has the appearance of being gold plated in Mexico & seeing hard use. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: English mahogany casing has central medallion in lid w/ script initials “LB”, green baize lining compartmentalized gold plated eagle & panoply of arms flask, 2 cavity “Colts Patent” mold “44H”, pewter oiler, Ely cap tin, paper wrapped packet 6 “Colt Army” cartridges, 2 loose Ely 44 cartidges, steel headed cleaning rod & L shaped combination nipple wrench/screwdriver. Regardless of history this is a pleasing gaudy Mexican used gun. CONDITION: fair to good, all matching except grip which is unnumbered, number font on bbl. & arbor are different from rest of gun but appear old & original to use. Engraving & markings were worn when plated, Colt patent stamped inside cyl. flute is still crisp under engraving. Swivel in butt is newer addition. Certifiable antique ivory grips have smooth edge wear & high relief wear to Mexican eagle medallion. Mechanics are functional w/ well defined dark rifled bore. Casing is very good w/ folding handle in lid, lining is better than most sold. Accessories are all very good, gold plated 2 sided eagle w/ panoply of arms flask has gold paint restoration on sides. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19787/JS). ANTIQUE. $6,000-8,000.

PRESENTATION FACTORY ENGRAVED AND IVORY MOUNTED

Lot # 4038 (Sale Order: 40 of 530)

COLT MODEL 1861 NAVY REVOLVER. Cal. 36. S# 18670 IE. Standard configuration. Bbl. 7.5" rnd. Ulrich engraved, silverplated, “certifiable antique ivory” grips, iron backstrap inscribed “Col. Colt to Capt. J.C. Comstock / Hartford Light Guard”. Revolver is featured in a 2013 article in Texas Heritage Magazine. The article states that Comstock, after leading his men at 1st Manassas, became ill & came home to Hartford where the very ill Colt gave his good friend this revolver before Colt would die in January 1862, Comstock died a month later. This gun, however; is quite an enigma as the published serial range would indicate manufacture in 1864, well past Col. Colt’s death. The inscription however appears original. Colt authority R.L. “Larry” Wilson stated in accompanying letter of authenticity “It is possible that as an important presentation, the revolver had such special or rushed attention in the engraving department that a mistaken serial marking was employed. It could also be that Colt wanted the public & the industry to feel that his production numbers [of this new model] were higher than the actual… Colt is known e.g., of skipping serial numbers to make it appear that more pieces were made than actual fact. A prime example of this is deluxe cased & engraved Model 1851 Navy revolver serial number 69367… Since only about 42,000 London navies were produced, the highest serial range of the specimen is hard to explain. Colt fanciers must expect to occasionally come upon unexplainable mysteries of manufacture which spark the imagination.” Regardless, this is a beautiful & attractive original Ulrich factory engraved revolver & is very moderately estimated. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 12 page letter from R.L. Wilson stating the importance of this revolver: copy of article “A Gift for a Friend” from volume 3 Texas Heritage 2013. CONDITION: very good to fine overall. Crisp markings, much of the original silver is present, mostly discernible cyl. scene, all 6 crisp safety pins. Smooth ivory grips are well fit w/ good patina. Mechanically fine w/ crisp rifled bore. Accompanying very good reproduction Colt casing & powder flask display revolver nicely. (01-19826). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.

HISTORIC AND EXCEPTIONALLY RARE COLT EXHIBITION

Lot # 4044 (Sale Order: 46 of 530)

ENGRAVED GOLD, SILVER, NICKEL AND IVORY SINGLE ACTION ARMY FROM FAMOUS 1876 PHILADELPHIA CENTENNIAL WORLD EXPOSITION. Cal. .45. S# 11089. Standard configuration, manufactured 1874, 7.5" bbl. w/ 1 line script address, 2 line 1871 & 1872 patents on left side of frame. Accompanied with letter from noted Colt Engraving authority R. L. Wilson wherein he extols the quality of this revolver and relates its history as he knows it. This revolver appears in full color on pgs. 172-177 & 178 of Colt Pistols, Wilson & Hable; several times in Mr. Wilson’s Colt engraving books, the original and Volume I; in color on pgs. 174, 181 & 305 The Colt Heritage, Wilson; again in Colt An American Legend, Wilson; and on p. 28 Buffalo Bill’s Wild West An American Legend, Wilson & Martin. Like the other exposition guns exhibited in the Philadelphia Centennial display, this revolver is magnificently fully Colt factory engraved. Revolver exhibits known features of both Helfrich & Ulrich which both include elegantly engraved superb delicate arabesque intertwined scrolls, floral & geometric design en suite on every component of revolver including nearly full coverage on hammer, cylinder barrel & ejector. In beautiful contrast to the bright polished nickel are gold plated cyl., hammer, trigger guard, backstrap & ejector housing including its spring. Revolver is mounted w/ finest polished smooth 1 piece ivory grips. Adding further to contrasting colors are the brilliant fire blued screws & cylinder pin. This special class of “over the top” decoration is seen only on special display & presentation Colts. The intertwined design as noted by Wilson as “special scroll” is only seen in 1870s and few guns after the Philadelphia Centennial examples. As there are no signed examples or Colt records identifying engraver, the engraver name is speculation though the quality is magnificent. In comparing signed Ulrich arms of this era, Herman Ulrich was most likely the artist, though his brother was chief contract engraver at the time. There is no surviving list of serial numbers of the 18 Philadelphia Centennial Single Actions at center of the famous display. However; there is little doubt that 15 of the serial numbers are known based on Colt “loans” of revolvers for advertising via various expositions from known documents 1877-1895. The best known of these is dated October 15, 1877 on letterhead of H. & D. Folsom to Colt and lists 12 engraved SAAs in detail & Henry Folsom states in postscript: “They attracted a great deal of attention at the exposition and believe they have been a great advertisement”. This revolver and a few others are all accepted by knowledgeable arms collectors as being part of the Philadelphia display, though few survivors are known. This exact gun, SN11089, can be identified by its photograph along w/ SN 11088, almost identically engraved on the Colt display wheel. This is noted by Wilson in 1987 text “Colt An American Legend”. SN 11088 did not survive in the exemplary condition of 11089 being offered. SN 11086, 11087, 11088 are all listed in Colt ledgers as being “loaned” at various dates after the centennial, so why isn’t SN 11089 listed? We know it is pictured in the display. Wilson delves into reasoning in his accompanying letter. Regardless, this is the one of the best two Philadelphia Centennial Colt Single Actions. The other great example, SN 8928, had its grips changed after centennial display from ivory to wood based on 1877 ledger & photo in the wheel. Colt used these fanciest exhibition guns for promotion and advertising throughout the 19th century as noted by shipments as late as 1897 for at least one of the 1877 Folsom listed guns. SN 11089 is well known to the collecting community & pictured along w/ 11088 in the 1984 Hable book & no doubt one of the Philadelphia Centennial revolvers. Several of the serial numbered guns on the Folsom list are known shipped on multiple occasions as “loans” for exhibitions. This is among the finest & most elaborate of all known Colt Single Action Army Revolvers, few better will ever come to market w/ such fantastic condition, history and renowned collection history. Revolver is housed in a custom leather French fitted green velvet lined casing made by Arno Werner. Removable fitted lid is elegantly gold embossed “PHILADELPHIA CENTENNIAL / 1876 / COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER / NO. 11089”. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: accompanying is a framed, poster size copy of a photograph of the Colt “wheel” display at the 1876 Expo which includes the 18 engraved & ivory gripped Colt single actions in the center, one of which is undoubtedly this revolver. The full description of this lot can be found on our online catalog on Hi Bid, which can be found at the following URL: https://poulinantiques.hibid.com/lot/102510922
