CIVIL WAR MARTIALLY MARKED HENRY RIFLE OF THE 1ST

Lot # 4002 (Sale Order: 3 of 543)

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA CAVALRY. Cal. 44 rim fire. S# 3071. Bbl. 23 1/4”. The Henry rifle was designed by B. Tyler Henry and was developed from the Volcanic lever action car...morebine. The Henry was a fundamental advancement in firepower during the Civil War. It allowed 15 consecutive shots to be fired before requiring a reload. This advanced armament was devastating to opposing Infantry troops armed with single shot percussion muskets. The Federal Government purchased 1,731 Henry rifles between 1862 & 1865. Nearly all rifles between the serial numbers 3000 & 4200 were issued to the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry regiments. Over 200 of the DC Cavalry Henry rifles were captured in September of 1864 during the infamous “Beefsteak Raid” by forces under the command of Confederate Major General Wade Hampton. These rifles saw subsequent issue to the 7th, 11th & 35th Virginia Cavalry. The unusual markings of the number “17” on the rear left side of the barrel and in the front left of the frame, coupled with the carved “A” at the left wrist, may indicate use and inventory by Confederate forces. This particular rifle has an octagonal barrel with a front sight and a 900 yard rear sight. The loading tube below holds 15 rounds of 44 caliber rim fire ammunition. The top of the barrel is marked “HENRY’S PATENT. OCT. 16, 1860 MANUFACT’D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN, CT.”. Between the rear sight and the frame the serial number “3071” can easily be seen. The right flat of the barrel bears the clear inspector’s mark “C.G.C.” for Charles G. Chapman. Under the Chapman mark is the sub-inspection letter “H”. The brass frame has another small “H” stamped approx. 3/8” back from the barrel just below the curve. Serial number “3071” may also be seen on the lower receiver tang that is concealed by the buttstock. All screws on the frame are original. The brass buttplate has a clear “H” stamped on the right-side top near the bend. The buttplate is also serial numbered on the inside “3071”, and the cleaning rod door is present, but there is no rod within the stock. The oil stained walnut stock has an “A” carved into the wood just below the frame tang. As stated above, it is important to note that the atypical marks of “17” at the rear of the barrel and in front of the frame, combined with the “A” carved into the stock, may indicate capture & reissue to Confederate Virginia Cavalry. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a looseleaf binder containing information about Henry rifles in general, this particular Henry, and the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry. There is also information relating to the “Beefsteak Raid” orchestrated by Confederate General Wade Hampton. And a copy of the book “Spies, Traitors & Conspirators” by General Lafayette C. Baker with detailed information about the “Beefsteak Raid”. CONDITION: all iron parts have a pleasing dark patina with ample vestiges of the blued finish remaining. The brass frame & buttplate have a very attractive mellow patina. The cleaning rod cover in the buttplate is tight and functions freely. The stock has 2 tight, short cracks behind the receiver, as commonly seen. As expected, the barrel, frame & stock have numerous superficial bumps, scrapes & abrasions. However, the condition of this historic Henry rifle can be considered outstanding in comparison to most martially marked Henrys and particularly those associated with the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry. The mechanics operate correctly & smoothly with no observable problems. The bore shows use, but retains strong rifling. (01-23202/BF). $30,000-40,000.

EARLY CIVIL WAR HENRY 1860 LEVER ACTION RIFLE.

Lot # 4004 (Sale Order: 5 of 543)

Cal. 44. henry Rimfire. S# 1765. Bbl. 24". Address & "HENRY’S PATENT OCT. 16, 1860" marking. Shroud at forward portion of barrel rotates for loading. German silver blade ...morefront sight, open dovetail on barrel with receiver mounted graduated leaf rear sight. Brass frame. Walnut stock with early style rounded point crescent brass trapdoor buttplate. Inside toe of buttplate has matching serial number as do both buttplate screws & both upper tang screws. Lower tang screw is not numbered. Interesting that this rifle has no internal New Haven Arms inspection marks usually (H) for Henry (H) or (W) for Winchester. All noted civilian privately purchased rifles have some internal factory proof mark. Rifles bought by US military in 3000 S# range have no factory inspection markings, only military proofs externally. There were 50 initial rifles sent to Colonel Lafayette Baker on June 19, 1863 for field use with 1st DC Cavalry. This is likely one of those guns which went straight to field without going to any armory or ordnance facility for inspection. Wiley sword in his 2006 text "The Historic Henry Rifle" states "..it is likely that no special identifying markings were applied to them by the factory inspectors on behalf of the US government". This fine survivor that likely saw early Civil War service with 1st DC cavalry. There are in National Archive records of 21 1st DC cavalry rifles reissued to 3rd Veteran Reserves that were are in range 1491-2573, two bracket this one 1732 & 1798. This rifle is most likely one of the early rifles sent direct from Henry to 1st DC cavalry. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1 fired cartridge found in buttstock compartment. CONDITION: as found condition. Barrel retains strong original blue in protected areas leading to the integral magazine tube. Balance of barrel blue fading to patina showing scattered corrosion. Uncleaned receiver shows a desirable untouched mottled patina with green verdigris present around ejection port, hammer and top tang. Buttplate is also uncleaned having a heavy mustard patina with dark appearance at peak. Stock has a repaired full length split between the top tang and toe area of buttplate with nails at comb and toe facilitating the repair. Stock has numerous scratches, marks and dents. Mechanics fine. Bore shows scattered pitting and retain sound rifling. (01-23128/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-30,000.

REMARKABLE WINCHESTER 1873 1 OF 1000 UPGRADE LEVER

Lot # 4016 (Sale Order: 17 of 543)

ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF. S# 28038. Possibly the finest 1 of 1000 copy ever built. This rifle deceived firearms experts, authors and collectors for decades. The quality ...moreof the alterations are so convincing that this rifle is pictured as original in “Winchester Golden Age of American Gunmaking and the Winchester 1 of 1000” by R. L. Wilson. The unscrupulous unknown builder started with a very fine case colored first model 1873 with set trigger, a very valuable rifle in its own right. He then altered the S#, added engraving, inscriptions & checkering to match the features of a real 1 of 1000 rifle. The style and quality of the engraving and inscription very closely match Winchester’s work. Under close inspection variances in the last 3 digits of the S# can be seen. This rifle was first documented and exposed as altered in 2011. The real 1 of 1000 bearing this S# is in a known collection. Barrel 24" octagon with sporting barrel sights & Vernier tang sights. Breech and muzzle ends of barrel have added engraving. Top flat has added “One of One Thousand” inscription. Case colored first model action with mortised thumb print dust cover and single set trigger. Fancy walnut forearm and straight grip stock with trap door crescent steel buttplate. Deluxe pattern hand checkering is believed to have been added. Modern sling on original swivels. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 2 posters promoting the Universal-International film "Winchester '73" starring James Stuart & Shelly Winters. This famous movie is credited with starting the Winchester collector's craze by doing a search for the remaining 1 of 1000 Model 73s. (1) Pictures Jimmy Stuart raising the Winchester '73 to his shoulder above a banner surrounded by cavalry, indians, stagecoach scenes and outlaws with Shelly Winters in the lower left corner. Bottom border has 1950 Universal Pictures Co copyright with "40084" followed by "50-408". Image size is 39" by 24 1/2".
