Original Painting of Hitler by Heinrich Knirr

Lot # 54 (Sale Order: 5 of 167)

This historical painting by Heinrich Knirr, referred to as “Hitler’s official painter”, was meticulously restored in 2004 by Barry Bauman of the Barry Bauman Conservation. The painting measures 87 ¾” high and 57 1/4” wide and depicts Hitler in life size although Hitler was 5’ 8” and the painting portrays him as 6’ 2”. The painting was donated to a museum in 2003 and restored in 2004 where it has been hanging ever since. There is no known documentation on how the painting was saved or made it to the US but a story suggests that the portrait was liberated by one of the first American soldiers to enter Munich, Germany, in the spring of 1945. The soldier intercepted two Czechoslovakian men running down a street carrying a large object, which turned out to be the painting of Hitler. The painting had remained in a closet for 50 years before being donated to the museum. It was believed that Hitler only sat for one painter, Heinrich Knirr and that Knirr painted 5 portraits of him with 4 being from photographs and one from an actual sitting. This rare piece of history is the only known full size painting of Hitler by Heinrich Knirr and has never been offered to the market before. Please note that the lines seen in the pictures are reflections from the plexiglass protective case. The painting wasn’t removed for pictures. The painting is located in Indiana and will ship from that location. Buyer is responsible for all packing and shipping. To view the detailed work of Barry Bauman during the restoration process visit http://www.baumanconservation.com/WWIITableofContents.html . This site contains a complete and detailed history of the painting, artist and restoration.
