Lot # 276 (Sale Order: 276 of 604)

Engraved and Gold Inlaid Durs Egg Flintlock Double Barrel Flintlock Sporting Gun

Durs Egg (1748-1831) was one of the finest gunmakers in London in the late 1700s and early 1800s. This c. 1800 double barrel smoothbore sporting gun is signed "D. EGG, LONDON," on the concave rib in gold and also "D. Egg" on each lock plate. The breech end of the barrels also feature dual gold bands and gold vent liners, and the priming pans are gold lined. The gun has a silver blade front sight and silver escutcheons, including an "M" inscribed wrist escutcheon. The engraving includes foliate, scroll, and martial trophy patterns along with game scenes on the stepped tails of the lock plates, the trigger guard bow, and the heel tang. The walnut half-stock has checkering on the forend and wrist and a rounded cheekpiece.

Class: Antique

Very good with 75% of the old refurbished brown finish and faint Damascus patterns on the barrels, bright gold inlays, some old reblued finish on the trigger guard bow, gray and brown patina on the balance, minor oxidation/pitting, absent ramrod tip, and mild wear. The stock is fair and has distinct checkering, some small flakes at the edges, dent near the toe on the right, hairline crack in the forend, moderate wear, and general dings and scratches. The left trigger and lock could use some adjustments, but the right lock and trigger are excellent. Overall, an attractive early 19th century English flintlock double barrel shotgun by one of the late flintlock era's great gunmakers.

Engraved, Carved, and Gold Accented Durs Egg Over/Under Flintlock Belt Pistol

Manufactured c. 1785 by Swiss born gunmaker Durs Egg (1748-1831). Egg was established in London by 1772, and his shop produced a wide array of high quality firearms, including his distinctive over/under pistols which found favor with the British Royal Family, and he worked as a private gunmaker, Ordnance contractor, and gunmaker to King George IV and the Duke of York. The barrels feature eight-groove rifling, blade and notch sights on the upper barrel, a crowned "D. EGG/LONDON" gold-lined sunken maker's mark on top at the breech, upper gold band, gold vent liners, and London proof and view marks situated on the lower left flat of the upper barrel and the upper left flat of the lower barrel. A belt hook is fitted to the lower left flat, and an iron ramrod is fitted on the underside. The locks are each signed "D Egg" and have burst, foliate, and martial trophy engraving patterns, frizzen rollers, and stepped tails with sliding safeties. The iron mounts are engraved en suite. Engraved and Gold Inlaid Boutet a Versailles Flintlock Pistol

Lot # 279 (Sale Order: 279 of 604)

Engraved and Gold Inlaid Boutet a Versailles Flintlock Pistol

This pistol from Nicolas-Noel Boutet (1761-1833) comes from his shop in Paris c. 1818-1822 after the downfall of Napoleon. The Victoria & Albert Museum states, "When Boutet left Versailles in 1818 he set up at No. 87 Rue de Richelieu in Paris but continued to use the signature, 'Boutet à Versailles.'" They also indicate that the serial number on the barrel is consistent with Boutet's private work after 1818. The heavily swamped Damascus barrel has fine "microgroove" rifling, a dovetailed nickel-silver blade front sight, gold bands inlaid at the muzzle and on the breech plug, "95" in gold inlay on top towards the front sight, grooved breech, "Boutet" on the upper left flat and "A Versailles" on the upper right flat inlaid in gold with floral and scroll accents, gold fleur-de-lis marks on the upper left and upper right flats of the breech plug, platinum vent liner, Leclerc's "LC" maker's mark on the underside of the breech plug, ".No.95." marked just behind the tenon, and "1" on the breech hook and just ahead of the forend indicating this was the first pistol in a since separated pair. "1" is also found on the stock and standing breech. The latter is grooved and has a notch rear sight. The flat beveled edge lock is signed "BOUTET" in gold with foliate accents and border along with a guttered and platinum lined priming pan, frizzen spring roller, sculpted frizzen and cock, and sliding half-cock safety. The pistol is equipped with an adjustable single triggers, and the trigger plate has a vase motif finial with incredible detail in the relief chiseled floral patterns. The spurred trigger guard and other mounts also feature delicate floral engraving and "scooped" designs. The nicely figured walnut half-stock is slender and beautifully shaped and has silver escutcheons, fine checkering on the wrist with scalloped molding at the edges, and a flared relief chiseled pommel.

Class: Antique

Very good with bright gold and platinum, traces of original blue and casehardened finish, gray and brown patina on the balance, repaired cock, light pitting, and general mild overall wear. The stock is fine and has distinct checkering, small crack on the left at the breech, and mild dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.

Very Rare Cased Pair of Finely Engraved English German Silver Barreled and Mounted Saw-Handle Percussion Pistols -A) English Percussion Pistol

Very Rare Cased Pair of Finely Engraved English German Silver Barreled and Mounted Saw-Handle Percussion Pistols -A) English Percussion Pistol
The only visible marking on these c. 1830s pistols is "London" inscribed on top of the rare German silver barrels. The underside of the barrels also have Birmingham proofmarks along with "HM". The barrels are smoothbore and are equipped with dovetailed blade front sights and swivel mounted iron ramrods and have extensive scroll engraving. The casehardened breech plugs have three inlaid German silver bands as well as scroll engraving. The German silver standing breeches incorporate the notch rear sights and are also scroll engraved as are the back action locks and the spurred German silver trigger guards. Some of the other German silver mounts are also lightly engraved. The pommel caps include cap/nipple compartments. The walnut half-stocks are a saw-handle design and have checkering on the curved wrists. The pair comes in fitted mahogany case with a loading/cleaning rod, cap tin, and bag shaped powder flask. These pistols were likely designed as traveling pistols for an English gentleman, but they certainly could have also been called upon for dueling if required.

Cased Pair of John Manton Percussion Dueling Pistols

Lot # 284 (Sale Order: 284 of 604)

Exceptionally Fine Documented Cased Pair of Silver and Gold Inlaid John Manton Percussion Dueling Pistols -A) Manton Dueling Pistol

Exceptionally Fine Documented Cased Pair of Silver and Gold Inlaid John Manton Percussion Dueling Pistols -A) Manton Dueling Pistol
At first glance, these pistols appear to have been originally made c. 1830 to 1850, but the low serial number "2878" appears on the underside of the barrels which places them decades earlier. This pair is listed by serial number and described on page 41 of "The Manton Supplement" by Neal and Back as manufactured in 1798 and later updated to percussion. They are described as a "Pair of Single Barrel 26 Bore Dueling Pistols Cased" and further "These pistols have been rebuilt with new full stocks and new locks and breeches. The butts are chequered apart from the rounded ends, and new spur trigger guards have been fitted. The locks and breeches are similar to those in Plate 28. The case has been refitted to suit the pistols but it still retains the original label as in Plate 127. The octagonal barrels with their serial number, the full-stocks, and this trade label are the only clues to the original period of these pistols, they having come from the makers as new percussion pistols and still being in that condition."The browned Damascus barrels have silver blade front sights and are signed "- - -MANTON * LONDON- - -" in gold inlay. The undersides have the noted serial number and London proof marks. The casehardened breech plugs have pierced platinum plugs, scroll engraving, and dual platinum bands, and the standing breeches are also casehardened and display scroll engraving as do the flat locks which are signed "MANTON" at the center and have sliding half-cock safeties. The wedge and wrist escutcheons are silver, and the balance of the mounts are blued. The trigger guards are spurred and enclose adjustable single set triggers. The full-length stocks have checkered wrists. The ramrods have horn tips and covered worms. The case has the original John Manton trade label inside and green baize lining and contains a variety of loading and maintenance equipment.

Manufacture: Manton
Model: Percussion
BBL: 9 1/2 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 26 bore
Finish: brown/casehardened/blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 2878
Class: Antique

Condition: Excellent overall with only minimal handling and storage type wear. The safety is frozen, likely having not been moved for many decades, but the lock and set trigger are otherwise fine. The case and accessories are very fine with age and storage related wear, including stains in the shape of the pistols on the lid lining from resiting in contact with the pistols over the years.

B) Manton Dueling Pistol
See "A."

Manufacture: Manton
Model: Percussion
BBL: 9 1/2 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 26 bore
Finish: brown/casehardened/blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 2878
Class: Antique

Condition: Exceptionally fine with a spot of oxidation ahead of the bolster and minimal light storage and handling related wear. Mechanically fine aside from the safety which is frozen from likely not being moved for many years. This is an extraordinary pair of pistols bridging the flintlock and percussion eras. Though well-suited for a duel, but the time they left the factory dueling in England had largely come to an end and thus they have been passed down through the generations in essentially new condition.

Indian "Toradar" Matchlock Musket with Square Bore

Lot # 285 (Sale Order: 285 of 604)

Ornate Indian "Toradar" Matchlock Musket with Very Rare Square Bore Damascus Barrel

The toradar matchlock muskets were major firearms in South Asia into the mid-19th century long after other areas had transitioned to more advanced firearms. They were used both for both combat and hunting. Though there is little variance in their basic form, there is a wide range of decorative features reflecting the region's varied cultures, and this example is certainly very ornate and attractive. It is also particularly of interest for collectors with its highly unusual rectangular barrel and "square bore," a rare design occasionally found on toradars but rarely seen on any antique firearms. The barrel is of etched Damascus with lovely patterning and has a blade front sight and a notch rear sight at the breech. The stock has floral accents, "1850" marked on the left, "83" on the right, and antique ivory panels at the breech and butt. Consignor statements indicate this piece came from Dr. Leo Figiel's collection of Mogul Arms sold in 1998 and was also previously owned by Bob Hale.

Class: Antique

Fine with distinct Damascus patterns and gray and brown patina on the barrel, some oxidation mainly at the breech, absent ramrod and some other pieces including some barrel bands, cracks and chips in the antique ivory, and minor cracks in the wood. The bore is obstructed towards the breech. Mechanically fine.

Provenance: The Dr. Leo Figiel Collection of Mogul Arms; The Bob Hale Collection; Private Collection

Ornate Damascened and Inlaid Percussion Toradar Musket

Lot # 286 (Sale Order: 286 of 604)

Ornate Gold Damascened and Inlaid Percussion Toradar Musket

This ornate musket was manufactured c. 1840s-1870s in the classic style of the toradar matchlock muskets of South Asia which date back to as early as the 16th century and continued to see widespread use through the mid-19th century. The main difference on this example is that it has a more advanced percussion ignition system and a trigger enclosed by a trigger guard unlike the typical toradars. The consignor stated this piece was an Indian royal hunting gun. It features highly attractive gold damascene scrollwork at the muzzle and breech sections of the ornate ribbed barrel with sculpted foliate accents, a post front sight, smoothbore, East India Company percussion lock with the lion cipher at the center, cap compartment on the underside of the butt, and contrasting inlays on the stock.

Class: Antique

Very good with most of the original gold remaining, silver gray and brown patina on the balance, mild oxidation, some missing barrel bands, and moderate wear. The stock is good and has cracks and chips, moderate wear, and some repairs including a spliced forend. Mechanically fine.

Manufactured in 1936, this is an attractive example of Colt's New Service Model revolver in the desirable .44-40 W.C.F. caliber, which has long been associated with America's western frontier. Engraved Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Revolver

Lot # 296 (Sale Order: 296 of 604)

King Gun Sight Co. Shipped, H. H. Hilton Signed Engraved Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change Double Action Target Revolver with Round Butt, Carved Ivory Grip and Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter states the revolver was sold to Powell & Clement, Cincinnati, Ohio, and shipped express to the King Gun Sight Co. of San Francisco, California, on April 17, 1939. Unfortunately, the factory invoice detailed record for this revolver was damaged and additional information is unavailable. A copy of a September 26, 1939, letter on Powell & Clement Co. letterhead and addressed to S&W indicates the revolver was returned to the S&W factory for refinishing, obviously after it was engraved and the custom work by King was completed. This rare 4 inch barrel round butt target revolver features King Co. special sights: a King red bead front sight on a mirror base (partially covering barrel legend) and S&W adjustable white outlined square notch rear sight. The revolver is decorated with an attractive floral scroll motif on matted background by Herbert Hardie Hilton, who has signed his work on the underside of the barrel. The revolver wears a set of grips featuring matching carved floral scrollwork. The revolver has a humpback hammer and matching serial numbers on the butt, cylinder, and barrel.Herbert Hardie Hilton (1886-1974) was born in Webster, South Dakota, and later settled in Detroit, Michigan. Based on Michael Helms research, Hilton is first mentioned as an engraver in the 1910 Detroit City Directory and in 1911 was listed as an engraver for the Weyhing Brothers Manufacturing Company known for producing police badges. Before 1920 Hilton's other jobs included Cadillac Motor Car Co. parts inspector and salesman. He lived in Detroit until at least 1942 as he moved with his sister's family to Oneida, New York. In 1946 he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he remained as an engraver until his death (November 3, 1974). His self-employed engraving career spanned some 40 years. In a 1949 article in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Hilton's engraving talents are celebrated by stating: "Only two recognized commercial engravers now remaining outside of Forth Worth are Art Griebel of Chicago and Herbert Hilton of Phoenix, Ariz..." In another article from 1950 featured in The News and Courier of Charleston, South Carolina, Hilton is referred to as a "topnotch contemporary engraver." The engraving displayed on this revolver certainly speaks to Hilton's talents. Helm's letter detailing Hilton's short biography and a couple of copies of related newspaper articles and obituary are also included.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Exceptionally fine as engraved by Herbert H. Hilton, retaining 98% of the S&W factory applied blue finish with mild muzzle wear, few scattered handling marks, a couple areas of light spotting. The special hammer knurling was cut as part of the King Gunsight enhancements. The grips are very fine, with a few typical age lines and crisp engraving. Mechanically excellent. A very attractive and uniquely engraved and signed S&W M&P Round Butt Target Revolver shipped to the famed King Gun Sight Co.

Engraved Smith & Wesson Military & Police Revolver with Letter

Attractive Oscar Young Engraved and King Super Target Upgraded Smith & Wesson Military & Police Model 1905 First Change Double Action Revolver with Ivory Grips, Box, and Factory Letter

According to the included factory letter, this gorgeous revolver was shipped from the factory on August 7th, 1907, to a Walter G. C. Clark, address unknown. The letter also states that, while no details are listed, the revolver was indeed shipped as a special order. The revolver is the early five-screw variant and is adorned with beautifully cut factory scroll engraving over a punchdot background on the barrel, frame, cylinder, and grip straps. Aside from the engraving, the revolver is fitted with a highly attractive set of smooth ivory grips which bear Smith & Wesson logo medallions on either panel. The revolver is also fitted with a later-added King Super Target vent rib with red blade inset, a micro-click rear sight, and King's "Cockeyed" right handed hammer. The revolver has matching assembly numbers on the yoke and frame along with the matching serial number on the barrel, cylinder, and butt. According to noted Smith & Wesson collector David Carroll, the engraving on this gun is the reason it is noted in factory records as a "special order". It was engraved by the renowned Oscar Young, eldest son of Gustave Young. Oscar succeeded his father as Master Engraver upon Gustave's death in 1897 and led the engraving department until his own untimely death in 1912. Included is a correct model factory box with very faint (illegible) serial number on the underside.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine as engraved and Smith & Wesson King upgraded with 90% plus blue finish, showing a gray patina on the grip straps, a few minor scratches on the frame, and light handling marks overall. The ivory grips are excellent with some age lines around the butt and left medallion and an attractive grain and color on both panels. Mechanically excellent. The box is very fine with minor storage wear.
