Excellent, 85% of the original case colors remain with only some fading mainly on the top of the receiver and buttplate. Nearly all of the original blue finish is present on the loading gate. The dust cover retains 80% of the original blue finish. The barrel retains 60% of the original blue finish, smooth brown patina on the balance, a few spots of age related discoloration, and scattered traces of light pitting. The markings are sharp. The highly figured, fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are very fine and retain 90% of the original high polish piano finish, crisp checkering, and scattered minor dents and handling wear. Engraved Smith & Wesson No. 1 Lever Action Repeating Pistol

Lot # 1026 (Sale Order: 27 of 581)

Extraordinary Factory Engraved Smith & Wesson No. 1 Lever Action Repeating Pistol From the Collection of Mac McCroskie

This Smith & Wesson No. 1 lever action repeating pistol was manufactured in Norwich, Connecticut, c. 1854-55. Total production of the No.1 lever action pistol was approximately 1,200 pieces. This pistol has the distinctive part-round/part-octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine, toggle lever with finger hole, and two-piece, bag-shaped grips. The pistol has the "Type II" crowned muzzle, narrow muzzle collar, rounded T-bar magazine lock spring, and flat, "clam-shell" magazine follower. The barrel has a brass front sight with flattened blade. A fixed rear sight is mounted on the receiver. The receiver, side plates, back strap, and back of the hammer are decorated with the factory open scroll and leaf pattern engraving which was standard on most S&W No.1 pistols. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "SMITH & WESSON/NORWICH CT." The right barrel flat is stamped: "CAST-STEEL" reading toward the receiver. The left flat is roll-stamped: "PATENT/FEB. 14. 1854". The serial number is stamped on the left side of the grip strap beneath the grip and in the lever cut-out. "37" is stamped on the inside of each grip. All the visible serial numbers match. The letter "F" is stamped on the right side of the loading lever. The barrel and integral magazine have a brown finish, the receiver, side plates and bolt are blued, and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The rosewood grips have a high gloss piano finish. Smith & Wesson lever action repeating pistols are rare and historically significant. The toggle lever action, spring-loaded magazine, and self-contained primed cartridge were highly significant developments in the evolution of repeating firearms. The Smith & Wesson lever action repeating pistols were pioneer arms for both Smith & Wesson and Winchester and are rare and very desirable pistols.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. The barrel/magazine retains 85% of the original brown finish. The brown has developed a very attractive plum patina with slight wear on the muzzle collar and edges of the barrel flats. The barrel markings are crisp. The frame, side-plates, back strap, and trigger have much of the delicate bright blue finish in protected areas (the blue finish on Smith & Wesson lever action revolvers was extremely fragile; it is very rare for the receivers to show any original finish). The metal surfaces are smooth. The simple but well-executed factory leaf and scroll engraving is crisp. Three of the four frame screws have some minor screw-driver wear. The bolt retains 40% of the attractive bright original blue finish. The hammer and finger lever have 30% of the muted casehardened finish with a plum brown patina. The rosewood grips are in excellent condition and retain nearly 95% of the original piano finish with traces of handling wear. This is an exceptional and rare Smith & Wesson No. 1 Type II Lever Action Repeating pistol, certainly one of the finest example ever offered for sale by Rock Island Auction Company and one of the finest extant.

The included factory letter states the rifle was received in the warehouse on January 25, 1905, and shipped the next day with a round barrel in .33 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman receiver sight, half magazine, shotgun butt with hard rubber buttplate, takedown configuration, and factory no. 10 engraving at an extra cost of $2.00.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent plus. This rifle retains 98% plus of the bright original blue finish. The casehardened components retain 97% vivid original colors. The blue components show only traces of storage wear. The barrel and half-magazine are free from the scuff marks and other finish wear typically found on takedown rifles. The Winchester factory markings and flawlessly executed factory engraving are extremely crisp. The stock and forearm are both in excellent plus condition; nearly all of the high polish piano finish remains. The checkering on the pistol grip and forearm is very sharp; wear is limited to several very minor handling marks and two small spots of flaking on the lower left side of the stock near the buttplate. This is an excellent plus example of a high condition, exceptional, factory engraved Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle in caliber .33 W.C.F.

Scarce Documented .50 Express Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1883, this deluxe Winchester Model 1876 .50 Express lever action rifle with Cody Firearms Museum letter states the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on November 16, 1883. Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle retains 30% of the original blue and 50% color casehardened finish. There is minor edge wear on the barrel flats. The casehardened finish on the forearm cap, frame, dust cover, lever and hammer have faded slightly but retain strong case colors. The buttplate has a dark patina with some light pitting. The rifle has scattered minor surface discoloration and some light pitting on the metal surfaces. The stock and forearm are both fine overall with sharp checkering. Most of the high polish piano finish remains intact. The stock and forearm have a number of minor handling marks. All of the markings are crisp. Mechanically excellent. U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber: "44 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. "44 CAL." is stamped in script across the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL. 1873.-" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number is roll-stamped across the lower tang between the lever latch and rear tang screw.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. This rifle retains 85% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish with only very minimal handling wear. The barrel has some slight edge wear and some age spotting at the muzzle near the front sight. The barrel markings are crisp. The blue finish on the magazine has begun to develop a plum-brown patina but retains most of the original blue. The dust cover retains 95% of the high polish blue. Nearly all of the fire blue finish remains on the loading gate and trigger. The forearm cap, receiver and hammer have original casehardened finish, with bright colors. Finish wear is limited to silvering on the receiver at the junction with the forearm and on the rear at the junction with the stock wrist with some finish wear on the lower edges of the receiver ahead of the side plates. The case colors are light on the top of the receiver heel and have silvered on the butt. There are some scattered spots of age discoloration on the bottom of the buttplate and on the buttplate heel. The stock and forearm are both excellent. The checkering shows only light-moderate handling wear, most of the piano finish remains, with wear limited to scattered and very insignificant handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This is an exceptional example of a deluxe special order Third Model 1873 Sporting rifle with the very desirable casehardened receiver.

New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Carbine Serial Number 8

Lot # 1032 (Sale Order: 33 of 581)

Scarce New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action Carbine Serial Number 8 with Scarce and Desirable 21 Inch Barrel

This carbine was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. c. 1857. The carbine has the distinctive blue octagon barrel with integral magazine and brass receiver, cartridge follower and crescent buttplate. The hammer and lever are casehardened. The straight grain American walnut stock has a high polish piano finish. The barrel has a nickel silver half moon front sight. A screw adjustable rear sight is mounted on the top of the receiver. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14, 1854". The marking indicates that this carbine was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company after the Volcanic Arms Company was reorganized by Oliver Winchester in April 1857. In the book "Volcanic Firearms: Predecessor to the Winchester Rifle" by Lewis & Rutter, on page 79 it states fewer than 100 New Haven carbines were produced with a 21 inch barrel. Most of these one encounters are the 16 inch variant! A rack number "46" is boldly stamped on the bottom of the receiver behind the cartridge elevator. The serial number "8" is stamped on the lower left side of the receiver tang, on the heel of the stock beneath the buttplate, on the inside of the buttplate and on the shanks of the hand fitted buttplate and lower tang screws. The Volcanic carbines and pistols were revolutionary firearms that featured self-contained primed cartridges, spring loaded magazines and lever actions. The basic design of the Volcanic carbine formed the basis for the more successful New Haven Arms Henry and Winchester Model 1866 and Model 1873 rifles.

Class: Antique

Very good plus. The blue finish on the barrel has aged to a very attractive smooth blue-brown patina with original finish in protected areas. The barrel edges are sharp and the markings are crisp. The fine brass receiver has a mellow unpolished patina. The rear sight is a professionally made replacement. The sight plate joints are tight and wear is limited to a few scattered handling marks and scratches. The crescent brass buttplate has the same unhandled patina with some minor spots of age discoloration. The case colors on the hammer and lever have a deep brown patina. The stock is fine and retains 70% of the high polish piano finish. The stock has a number of minor dents and scratches, and has a hairline crack on each side of the wrist. Mechanically functions fine, but lever does not stay up. This is a fine representative example of an early and scarce New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Carbine.

John Ulrich Engraved, Signed Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 Rifle

Lot # 1033 (Sale Order: 34 of 581)

Rare and Magnificent Special Order John Ulrich Factory Engraved and Signed Winchester Model 1876 Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1881, this is an extraordinary factory engraved Winchester deluxe Second Model 1876 lever action rifle signed by Master Engraver John Ulrich. Ulrich only signed his best pieces. The receiver sides and top are decorated with Ulrich's distinctive scroll and border engraving on a punch-dot background. The left side plate is engraved with a highly detailed game scene that features a whitetail buck, and the right side plate is engraved with an open ribbon. The scrollwork continues on the top of the receiver, dust cover, upper tang, bottom of the cartridge elevator, buttplate heel and the sides of the forearm cap. "J. ULRICH" is stamped in tiny letters on the lower tang behind the trigger. The rifle has a blued full octagon barrel. The tip of the half-magazine, forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, cartridge elevator, bolt, hammer, trigger, lever, and shotgun buttplate are nickel plated. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, fancy grade, highly figured walnut with style H checkering. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The barrel has a folding combination front sight and a Lyman two leaf folding rear sight. The front leaf has a wide v-notch and the rear leaf has a flat top and triangle. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT/KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "CAL. 45-60" is hand engraved on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "45-60" is roll-stamped on the bottom of the cartridge elevator in script letters. "MODEL.1876." is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The serial number is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever catch. The lower tang is also marked with the assembly number “210,” “XX” and “O” and “S” inspector marks. The upper tang mortise of the stock also has the assembly number “210” along with the letter “P.” The inside of toe of the buttplate is stamped “17.” The toe of the buttstock under the buttplate is also stamped with the number “17.” Accompanying this rifle is a factory 2012 dated letter. It is listed by serial number 18464 as a rifle in 45-60 with octagon barrel, plain trigger, half magazine and full nickel finish and a warehouse date of 8 November 1881, a shipment date of 8 November 1881 and a repair and return date of 25 August 1896. There is no mention of the engraving. A second factory letter is also included. This 2012 dated letter is for a Model 1876, serial number 18463, which lists a rifle in 45-60 with an octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, shotgun butt, engraved 5 and half nickel finish. Rifle 18463 has been identified as having an octagon barrel, full magazine, full nickel finish, plain stock, set trigger and no engraving. This description does not conform to the records for this rifle. It is clear and verified that both 1876s, numbers 18463 and 18464, exhibit a factory recording error where order data for the rifles was transposed. Except for the plain trigger, the listing for serial number 18463 matches this Ulrich engraved rifle’s configuration. Both rifles were shipped on 8 November 1881 and the information was mistakenly recorded by the ledger keeper on the other rifle’s line. This is easily seen on the included copy of the factory ledger page. We have seen these transposed errors before. The writer is 100% certain that this is an authentic Ulrich engraved and signed Winchester Model 1876!

Class: Antique

Very fine. The rifle retains 60% of the original blue finish on the barrel and has developed an attractive plum-blue patina. The forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, hammer, lever and trigger have more than 80% of the original nickel plated finish. The buttplate shows slightly more wear and retains 70% of the nickel finish. The flawlessly executed scrollwork, borders and game scene are crisp and John Ulrich's signature stamp is fully legible. The highly figured fancy grain stock and forearm are in good condition. The checkering on the pistol grip and forearm shows moderate handling wear. Mechanically excellent. This is a magnificent example of a scarce Deluxe Winchester Model 1876 rifle with the rarely encountered combination of blue and nickel plated finish in addition to engraving signed by Master Engraver John Ulrich. A true investment grade firearm of the highest rarity.

Fine Documented ATF Exempted Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Saddle Ring Trapper's Carbine with 15 Inch Barrel

Manufactured in 1930, this is a very scarce trapper's carbine with a factory original 15 inch barrel. These short barreled carbines remained popular on the frontier well into the 20th century due to their very portable firepower. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms lists this carbine by serial number as being removed from the purview of the National Firearms Act and classified as a curio and relic (ATF exemption letter from 2009 included). These guns would have been highly prized by western ranchers and cowboys for their portability and firepower, as well as by trappers, as the nickname would imply. It has standard markings, including Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. It is fitted with pinned blade front and folding ladder rear sights, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It's mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine, displaying the grit and grim of a trusty trapper's carbine with 50% plus original blue finish remaining with smooth brown patina on the balance. The wood is also fine with dings and scratches received from a lifetime of service. Mechanically excellent. Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1035 (Sale Order: 36 of 581)

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1882. This is a fourth model with the gradually sloped receiver in front of the hammer and the serial number on the bottom of the lower tang in script numerals. These rifles are one of the most iconic weapons of the American West. The direct descendant of the iconic Henry rifle, they bridged the gap between the Henry and the Winchester Model 1873. The Model 1866 was highly prized on the western frontier for its rapid firepower in comparison to many single shot arms of the time, and was used by people in all walks of life. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line Winchester address and King's patent marking. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable notch rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with an iron trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included). The included factory letter confirms the round barrel and states the rifle was received in the warehouse on November 9, 1881, and shipped the next day along with nine other rifles with the same specifications and ten rifles with octagon barrels to the same order number.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel and magazine tube have a mottled gray patina associated with a well-traveled rifle along with a coat of varnish. The otherwise fine brass shows evidence of cleaning and is now turning to a mellow appearance. The lightly sanded and re-oiled wood is fine with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.

Blue Finish Remington Model 1875 Single Action Revolver

Lot # 1036 (Sale Order: 37 of 581)

Rare and Desirable Blue Finish Remington Model 1875 Single Action Revolver

Manufactured in 1875-1889, the Model 1875 Single Action revolver was Remington's attempt to compete with the Colt Single Action Army. Although the revolver was arguably a better, more durable design than Colt's Single Action Army, the lack of government contracts and a slightly later start limited sales. Despite this, Remington's Model 1875 remained a desirable sidearm on the Western Frontier to those not caught up in the hype of Colt's revolver. The revolver has a rare factory blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and frame. Most of this model, if not nearly all, were nickel plated. The top of the barrel is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILLION. N.Y. U.S.A." The left grip panel has the caliber designation "44" for .44-40 WCF. The butt has a factory fitted lanyard loop. Northern Plains Style Tooled Leather "Mexican Loop" Holster Rig

Lot # 1037 (Sale Order: 38 of 581)

Attractive Northern Plains Style Tooled Leather "Mexican Loop" Holster and Cartridge/Money Belt Rig for a Single Action Army Revolver

Manufactured in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, this is a very fine example of a Northern Plains type "Mexican Loop" holster rig. This example does not bear a maker's mark but shares many similarities with the high quality work of W.B. Ten Eyck, based in Billings, Montana. Ten Eyck was born in Pennsylvania in 1858, traveling westward in the 1880s. He originally found work in a Miles City, Montana, saddle and tack shop before moving to Billings and establishing his own shop in 1886. Though unmarked, the quality of this holster is clear, having a single retention loop and a large oval apron. There is light border tooling on the apron and the body of the holster, much like that seen on known Ten Eyck examples. The back of the apron is faintly marked "661049" in ink. The holster itself has a recurved throat, open toe, and will accommodate a Single Action Army Revolver with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. The belt is also unmarked, has a single row of cartridge loops to accommodate .44 or .45 caliber cartridges, a money pocket opening near the buckle, and is fitted with a nickeled buckle with clipped corners. It measures 2 3/4 inches long and 42 1/2 inches long including the billet.

Class: Other

Fine showing some moderate wear and mild age cracking scattered overall, typical of use in the American Frontier. The belt and holster show consistent color and wear, indicating they have been paired for quite some time, likely since they were made. This rig would make an exceptional pairing with a 7 1/2 inch barrel Colt Single Action Army revolver that has similar western character!

Lot # 1038 (Sale Order: 39 of 581)

Exceptional Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1890, this is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 1873 saddle ring carbine, having the third model receiver with integral dust cover guide and dust cover with gripping serrations at the rear. Winchester's Model 1873 was incredibly popular during the late 19th century, often being cited as one of the guns that "won the west". They were not only valued for their ruggedness and immense firepower for the time, but also due to sharing many of the same calibers with Colt's Single Action Army revolver, allowing one to carry only one type of ammunition. The included factory letter confirms the caliber as .44 as well as receipt at the warehouse on 21 January 1890 and shipment on 29 January 1890 in order number 8736. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address and patent dates, as well as the caliber marking at the breech, which is repeated on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The upper tang is marked with the model designation and the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a block blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor carbine buttplate containing an included three-piece cleaning rod.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine, retains 85% plus of the original blue finish, 85% plus of the vibrant original case colors, and 95% of the original niter blue on the loading gate, with some light wear on some high spots, edges, and from the saddle ring. Manufactured in 1913, this is an outstanding example of a special order deluxe Winchester Model 1885 rifle in takedown Schuetzen configuration. These rifles were incredibly popular among early 20th century competition shooters, especially in this configuration and chamber for this cartridge, which was initially developed as a black powder match-grade round. The top flat of the No. 4 weight octagon barrel is marked with the two-line address and patent dates, partially obscured by the front scope block. The caliber marking is offset on the upper left flat of the barrel at the breech and repeated on the bottom along with various proofs under the forearm, and the "4" barrel weight marking just in front of the forearm. There is a Winchester factory oval proof on top of the receiver. The upper tang has the three-line patent and trademark information, and the lower tang is marked with the serial number. The left side of the lower tang is marked with "1587", which is scored out, and "591", which is repeated in the stock inlet, front face of the takedown collar, and the rear face of the forearm. "1587" is repeated on the stock under the buttplate and on the inside of the buttplate. These assembly numbers indicate that the configuration of this rifle may have been changed slightly prior to leaving the warehouse. The barrel is fitted with a globe "wind gauge" front sight, a blank in the rear sight dove tail, along with two scope block fitted with Winchester factory rings bearing the 1907 patent dates on the right side. The rear ring has knobs for windage and elevation adjustment. A desirable Winchester A5 scope is fitted in the rings. It is mounted with a nicely figured, H-pattern checkered, Schnabel tip forearm with an ebony insert and a mounting point for a palm rest that is fitted with a disk-shaped hardwood palm rest. The very finely figured American Schuetzen pattern stock has a checkered pistol grip with hard rubber grip cap, a large cheek piece for a right handed shooter, and is fitted with a blued Swiss style buttplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Manufactured in 1869, the '66 secured Winchester's place in the annals of the West and launched a long line of successful Winchester lever actions that remain popular to this day and still retain the basic form of the '66. As a direct descendant of the Henry rifle, the Model 1866 traces its lineage back to earlier repeaters like the Volcanic, went on to see heavy use in conflicts related to land, gold and other resources on the frontier in the second half of the 19th century in the hands of settlers, Native Americans, outlaws, lawmen, and hunters; and is credited for ushering in the era of the repeating arm, making it one of the earliest and most widely used repeating rifles in the American West. Here is your chance to own an exceptional example of a Model 1866 saddle ring carbine with highly sought after Henry patent barrel marking! It is a third model with the more moderately curved receiver shape at the rear of the frame and the serial number stamped in block numerals behind the trigger. Over 170,000 Model 1866s were manufactured, but these Winchesters were purchased as working firearms and saw hard use. Winchester Model 1866 rifles are rarely encountered in very good or better condition.

The lever has sweeping leaf and scroll patterns. Scrollwork extends to the rear section of the barrel and surrounds the caliber marking. Sheard beaded blade front sight and a rear sight dovetail with filler block. Special Order Factory Engraved Marlin Deluxe Model 1893 Rifle

Lot # 1049 (Sale Order: 50 of 581)

Documented Special Order Factory Panel Scene Engraved Marlin Deluxe Model 1893 Lever Action Takedown Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1899, this is a fine example of a factory panel scene engraved Marlin deluxe Model 1893 takedown rifle. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .30 caliber with a 26 inch octagon barrel, pistol grip stock, and in takedown configuration when shipped on 12 May 1899. The receiver shows the standard Grade No. 1 engraving, a design which was created and almost certainly executed by Conrad F. Ulrich. Ulrich is noted by William Brophy on p. 533 of "Marlin Firearms" as having executed almost all of the engraving on Marlin firearms during the period of 1881 to 1910. Brophy also notes on p. 530-532 that "...the few remaining factory records do not, with any regularity, indicate if the gun was factory engraved or not." Having said that, given the fairly standardized patterns of Marlin engraving, it is fairly straight forward to determine that this rifle was indeed factory engraved and that the engraving was likely executed by Conrad Ulrich. The Grade No. 1 engraving seen on this piece features decorative borders, flourishes of floral scroll, and a buck standing in a forested scene on the left. The top of the barrel flat is marked with the two-line address and patent date, caliber marking at the breech, and the special smokeless steel marking on the upper left. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver and the left side of the upper tang. "37161" is marked inside the stock inlet, and "83297" is marked inside the buttplate. Due to the fit and similar aging of all the parts, the writer believes these parts were all together when the rifle left the factory. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and elevation adjustable notch rear sight. It is mounted with a finely figured No. B checkered forearm and incredibly figured, pistol grip buttstock with matching checkering and fitted with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine, retains 60% of the original blue finish and 50% of the muted original case colors in sheltered areas with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina. The wood is also fine with some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A very attractive, factory engraved, deluxe, Marling Model 1893 that would be a welcome addition to your collection.
