Antique Marlin Model 1881 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1050 (Sale Order: 51 of 581)

Very Fine Antique Marlin Model 1881 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .38-55 W.C.F. with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1889, this is a very fine example of a standard configuration Marlin Model 1881 rifle. The Model 1881 was just the beginning of a long line of successful lever action models for the Marlin Firearms Company, and they were one of the most legitimate competitors with Winchester for a share of the lever action market in the American West. The included copy of the factory letter lists this rifle in .38-55 caliber with a 28 inch barrel when shipped on 2 July 1889. The top flat of the barrel is marked with the two-line address and patent dates, as well as the "38-55" caliber marking at the breech. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. "A.P.WILSON" is stamped in the bottom of the buttstock just behind the lower tang as well as on each side near the buttplate. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight, which shows period modification, and an elevation adjustable blade rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Very fine, retains 75% of the original blue finish and faint traces of the original case colors with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina, a few scratches and dents on the side of the barrel and receiver showing a series of minor dings. The wood is fine with some scattered minor handling marks throughout. Mechanically excellent.

Winchester Model 1901 Lever Action Shotgun

Lot # 1053 (Sale Order: 54 of 581)

Very Fine Winchester Model 1901 Lever Action Shotgun

Manufactured in 1917. The Model 1901 was a redesign of the Model 1887 shotgun offered in 10 gauge only, and production serial numbers began at 64856. Production began in 1901 and lasted until 1920. The upper tang has the three-line trade mark information. A Winchester factory oval proof is stamped on the barrel and receiver at the breech. Mounted with a two-piece forearm and round knob pistol grip stock. The stock is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate.

The Only Known Documented 3rd Model Burgess Military Carbine

This Burgess 3rd Model, two-band full stock, lever action carbine was manufactured circa 1878. This carbine, is illustrated and described on page 110 of "LEVER ACTION RIFLES" by Samuel Maxwell. Maxwell identifies this carbine as the only known example of a 3rd Model Burgess Carbine with two barrel bands and no bayonet lug. The carbine has a 23-inch round barrel with full-length walnut forearm. The forearm has a casehardened steel tip and two screw-fastened blued bands. The stock has a crescent steel buttplate with sliding brass trap door. The butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed, cleaning rod with brass tip and slotted end. The rifle has the distinctive Burgess "S" shaped lever with side loading gate. The barrel, receiver, lever and barrel bands have a high polish blue finish. The loading gate is niter blue. The forearm tip, rear sight, hammer and crescent buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with an oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "G.W. MORSE/PATENTED OCT. 28. 1856" in two lines between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber designation: ".45 CAL. 70 GR. C.F." is stamped in a single line on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "A. BURGESS/PATENTED JANY. 7TH 1873/PATENTED OCT 19TH.1875" is roll-stamped in three lines on the upper receiver tang. The serial number is stamped on the lower receiver tang.

Some minor finish wear is concentrated on the barrel bands with 90% plus of the original bright high polish blue finish. The barrel has nearly all of the original blue finish. The receiver has some light edge wear and very minor handling marks. The lower tang has moderate finish wear. Most of the niter blue finish is present on the loading gate. The casehardened components retain 85% of the original mottled, dove-gray case colors. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition with nearly all of the original finish. This is an exceptional and well documented example of the only known variation of the limited production 3rd Model Burgess Military Carbine.

Remington-Keene Magazine Bolt Action Carbine in .45-70

Lot # 1060 (Sale Order: 61 of 581)

Exceptional Remington-Keene Magazine Bolt Action Carbine in Desirable .45-70

E. Remington & Sons manufactured approximately 5,000 Keene magazine rifles (in all configurations) between 1880-1883. This model was the first magazine fed rifle produced in quantity by Remington. This design was Remington's first attempt at producing repeating rifles to compete with Winchester's lever actions. It was designed by John W. Keene (d. 1880) of New Jersey in the 1870s. They were entered by Remington in the 1878 and 1881 magazine rifle trials. This example has a shorter barrel than any of the standard variants. A tubular magazine and carbine style forward barrel band like those used on classic lever action saddle ring carbines and many shotguns is fitted below the barrel that is loaded using a loading gate at the bottom of the action much like standard slide action shotguns. The hammer at the back of the bolt must be manually cocked for each shot. Production was limited in part due to competition with the Winchester-Hotchkiss rifles as well as the more modern Remington-Lee. They were used by the Indian Police and others in the West in the late 19th century. Features a straight grip stock and round barrel with fixed front and folding ladder rear sights. The bolt has the Remington address and Keene patent markings, and the "45/70" caliber designation is marked on the left of the receiver. A circular collection tag stamped "0264" is hanging from the trigger guard.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine, retains 80% plus original blue finish with scattered mild freckling and smooth brown patina on the balance, 70% plus vivid case colors on the hammer, smooth gray patina on the some of the exposed surfaces of the bright components and scattered light pitting on the bolt handle, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. The stock is excellent with a few nicks and handling marks and distinct edges overall. Mechanically fine.

Remington No. 4-S American Boy Scout Rifle with Bayonet

Lot # 1067 (Sale Order: 68 of 581)

Highly Desirable and Excellent Remington No. 4-S American Boy Scout Rolling Block Rifle with Exceptionally Rare Bayonet and Sheath

Introduced in 1913, Remington introduced a variation of their Cadet rifle, calling it the No. 4-S Boy Scout rifle, with total production believed to number 1,500 or less. In 1913, there were three rival scouting organizations in the U.S., one of them being called The American Boy Scout, which had been founded in 1910, had a peak membership of around 17,000, and was defunct by the 1920s. These rifles were an answer to a request by the organization for a robust but affordable rifle for their scouts. They were initially only available for sale through the scouting organization, but after a few months were made available to the public at a higher cost. It is believed that early production examples were marked "AMERICAN BOY SCOUT." on the left of the receiver as seen on this example. The rifles often saw significant use by the boys who used them and are rarely found in excellent condition like this example. The top of the barrel in front of the upper handguard is marked with the two-line Remington address and patent dates, the Remington trademark, and the caliber marking on the upper left. The bottom of the but stock wrist is stamped "2053" with an illegible stamp above. The Remington trademark is repeated on the upper tang and the previously mentioned boy scout marking is on the left of the receiver. It is fitted with blade front and folding ladder rear sights, a screw type bayonet lug, and sling swivels. When originally offered for sale, the rifles also included a one piece bayonet and a leather sheath, both of which are extremely scarce on today's market but are included with this rifle.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent, retains 98% plus of the original blue finish and vibrant case colors with some light wear near the muzzle from bayonet mounting. The upper tang screw is mildly marred. The wood is also excellent with a few scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is very fine with much of the blue finish on the hilt and the blade mostly bright. The sheath is very fine with minimal wear. One would be hard-pressed to find a finer example of these rare Remington No.4-S American Boy Scout rifles, especially an example that includes the bayonet!
