Historic Engraved Parker Brothers AAHE Pigeon Gun Shotgun

Lot # 1504 (Sale Order: 505 of 581)

Historic Elaborately Engraved Parker Brothers AAHE Pigeon Gun Double Barrel Shotgun with Gold Grip Cap Inscribed to Whiskey Distiller R.D. Clarke of Peoria, Illinois

Manufactured in 1907, during the heyday of live pigeon shooting. The popular shooting sport even made its one and only appearance in the 1900 Paris Olympics, just 7 years prior to this gun being built. Specialized pigeon guns were generally built with longer barrels, high combs, tighter chokes, and often no safety, very similar to modern trap guns. Single bead sight on the matte concave rib marked "PIGEON GUN PARKER BROS. MAKERS. MERIDEN, CONN. WHITWORTH STEEL" with 2 3/4 inch chambers, standard markings on the flats, automatic ejectors, and modified/full chokes. The water table is marked with the patent dates and "7/140450/A". There are 2 1/2 inch wedges of deep cut scroll and vine engraving on the breech ends of both barrels. The receiver features full coverage, bold, floral and scroll engraving with interwoven floral blooms, "PARKER BROS." marked on the underside, and artfully sculpted fences. The trigger guard, break lever, and tangs are engraved to match. With dual gold washed triggers and tang mounted automatic sliding safety. Finely checkered splinter forearm with engraved fittings and pistol grip stock with inset gold initial oval inscribed "R.D. CLARKE/PEORIA/ ILI", fancy fleur-de-lis carved accents, checkered flats, and leather wrapped recoil pad over a solid hard rubber buttplate. Barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech .735/.735 inch; bore constriction .023(modified)/.040(full); minimum wall thickness .042/.042 inch; drop at comb 1 3/4 inches; droop at heel 2 7/8 inches; length of pull 14 3/8 inches. The Clarke family of Peoria, Illinois, operated a distillery from 1862 up until Prohibition. In 1899, the "Clarke Bros." firm was led by Charles C. Clarke and Chauncy D. Clarke who formed "The Whiskey Trust” and reportedly mercilessly worked to shutdown their competition throughout the Midwest and even beyond. Sometimes they even used dynamite! One of their brand names was "R.D.C. Bourbon." Robert D. Clarke was the distillery's manager at the turn of the century and was wealthy enough to afford to have Frank Lloyd Wright design an addition to his stables. In 1913, Robert Clarke became a vice-president in the company. He was also involved in other regional businesses including the Commercial German National Bank. See "Peoria's Clarke Brothers & The Whiskey Trust" by Jack Sullivan in Bottles and Extras (September - October, 2009 issue) available online for more information on the family.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine. 60% blue remains with some areas of mild thinning, small scratches, and some light spotting. The receiver has 20% of the original case colors, predominantly in the protected areas, with the remaining areas an overall dark uniform gray patina, and detailed engraving. The refinished wood is very fine with the added recoil pad, crisp checkering and some small dings. Mechanically excellent.

Provenance: A.W. Pierce Collection

Marlin Model 90 Shotgun Presented and Inscribed to Tom Mix

Lot # 1505 (Sale Order: 506 of 581)

Documented Engraved and Gold Inlaid Marlin 20 Gauge Model 90 Over/Under Shotgun Presented and Inscribed to American Western Actor Tom Mix Pictured in "Marlin Firearms"

This shotgun was manufactured in 1937 for presentation to world famous American actor Tom Mix. Thomas Mix appeared in his first film in 1909 and soon rose to be the first of America's great Western film stars and "King of Cowboys." He appeared in 270+ films throughout his career spanning from the silent era into the early "talkies" and also directed and wrote. He was a real life cowboy. He was the son of a stable master and before his film career worked on a farm, served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War, was an award winning rodeo competitor, worked as a bronco buster at the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch, performed in Wild West Shows, served as a night marshal, and even rode in President Theodore Roosevelt's inaugural parade in 1905 along with Seth Bullock of Deadwood fame, and some of the Rough Riders. Mix was also a close personal friend of another of the America West's most famous lawmen: Wyatt Earp. He served as one of Earp's pallbearer's in 1929. Even as his film career took off, he continued to compete in rodeos and perform in Wild West Shows and circuses and was often injured during his on and off set performances. He retired from film work in 1935 and was killed in a tragic car accident near Tucson, Arizona, in 1940. This gun was one of the few guns given as presentation pieces by Marlin, the most notable other being the Ulrich engraved and gold plated Model 1897 rifle presented to world famous trick shooter Annie Oakley, which Rock Island Auction sold in December of 2019 for a whopping $575,000. The shotgun was presented to him for his work with the company on their gun handling and safety program for American youngsters as well as for his promotion of the Marlin Model 100-S "Tom Mix Special" rifle. The engraving was carried out by engravers Charles Preiss and Dan Cavanaugh, employees of Lehman Brothers Company located in New Haven, CT , according to William Brophy on page 610 of his book "Marlin Firearms: A History of the Guns and the Company that Made Them." The gun is also pictured and discussed in the book in several locations, including pages 416, 540, and 610. Brophy believed that this is one of the premier pieces in Marlin collecting; to that end, it is the most pictured gun in his book, even more so than the Annie Oakley 1897. The shotgun's gold inlaid inscription is also illustrated on page 208 of "The Gun Digest Book of Single Action Revolvers" by Jack Lewis from 1982 which features a whole section on Mix as well as numerous other references to him. The book states that it was "presented by Marlin at the height of his career." It is also believed to be just one of only two Marlin presentation guns in private hands. The shotgun itself has blued steel barrels with single brass bead sight on a matted portion of the upper barrel, 2 3/4 inch chambers with a single extractor, and choke constrictions of .003/.006 inches. The blued action is engraved with floral scrollwork surrounding cowboys breaking broncos on the left-hand side and "Tom Mix" inlaid in fancy gold script on the right on a matted background with a cowboy hat, belt rig, and a single action revolver. The gun features a pair of triggers and an automatic tang mounted safety switch. Attractively, figured fleur-de-lis checkered walnut forend with engraved fittings and a pistol grip stock with a Red Head recoil pad.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent overall, retaining 98% plus original blue and gold finishes with limited handling evidence, a few tiny scratches on the wood, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent. Do not miss this chance to own this one-of-a-kind piece presented to the first great Western actor: Tom Mix. Opportunities like this do not happen often!

The game scenes consist of a pair of pointing dogs on the left side, a buck and doe in a field on the underside, and a pair of pointing dogs on the right side. The gun features a double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety. The gun is mounted with a attractively figured and fancy border checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings as well as a pistol grip stock with fleur-de-lis carved drop points, blank gold inscription oval on the hard rubber grip cap and an engraved skeleton buttplate around the checkered butt. This gun is one of at most 19 guns built in this configuration of grade, gauge, barrel steel, barrel length, and vent rib according to page 309 of "The Parker Story" by Gunther, Mullins, Parker, Price, and Cote. The action type, barrel length, ejectors, stock type, and single trigger are confirmed on page 434 of "Parker Gun Identification and Serialization" by Price and Fjestad while the grade is listed as A4 not A5, though that appears to be a recording error as the gun is certainly marked and engraved as a grade 5 (BH). Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .733/.731 inches; choke constriction .038/.036 inches; minimum wall thickness .025/.029 inches; 1 11/16 inch drop at comb; 2 5/8 inch drop at heel; 14 1/4 inch length of pull; slight cast-on; weight 7 lbs. 14 oz.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine as refurbished, retaining 99% blue on the barrels, 40% case colors with the balance a silver patina, and some minor handling evidence. There are a few cracks inside the forend; otherwise, the wood is very good with a few light dings and scratches and well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Engraved Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector Third Model Revolver

Lot # 1519 (Sale Order: 520 of 581)

Historic Retailer Engraved Smith & Wesson "Wolf & Klar" .44 Hand Ejector Third Model Double Action Revolver with Attractive Relief Steer Head Carved Pearl Grips and S.D. Myers Holster Attributed to Texas County Sheriff Killed in the Line of Duty

The S&W .44 Hand Ejector Third Model revolver is also known as the "Wolf & Klar Model" due to the famed Texas retailer requesting a shrouded extractor barrel to be reintroduced. This example shows the typical Wolf & Klar retailer engraving and modifications, fit for a Texas lawman. This specific revolver includes documentation attributing it to a Texas county sheriff. An included signed affidavit states that the revolver and holster were purchased from Jack Sturman of Tulia, Texas, the county seat of Swisher County. Sturman owned the J&G Department store in Tulia and stated that he had bought the gun and holster from the family of Swisher County Sheriff John C. Moseley. Moseley was sheriff of Swisher County from 6 November 1928 until killed in the line of duty on 23 January 1933. The affidavit incorrectly lists the serial number as "30674", but includes pictures, which undoubtedly show this revolver and holster. Local newspapers from the period are filled with articles covering the gunfight with three outlaws in which Sheriff Moseley was killed. Moseley had pursued the outlaws in a brief car chase to a filling station where a gunfight broke out, ending with the sheriff being shot and killed at close range. The revolver shows the typical Wolf & Klar retailer pattern zig-zag line engraving which forms floral and geometric patterns encompassing most of the surfaces. The left of the barrel has the manufacturer marking while the right has the caliber marking. The Smith & Wesson trademark is on the left of the frame while "MADE IN U.S.A." is on the right. There is a registered patent mark on the rear surface of the hammer. Matching assembly numbers, "83817", are on the frame and crane. The matching serial number is on the butt, rear of the cylinder, and in the ejector rod shroud. It is fitted with a blade front sight and frame top groove rear sight. It is also fitted with, likely by Wolf & Klar at the time of engraving, a pair of pearl grips with a relief carved steer head on the right panel which is fitted with red glass bead eyes. Includes an attractively floral tooled leather holster by S.D. Myres of El Paso, Texas, which is marked "44/4" on the back along with the maker's mark.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Exceptionally fine, retains 95% of the original nickel finish with some light holster type wear on the muzzle and high spots and some scattered light spotting on the cylinder. The grips are also excellent with only the slightest handling marks. Mechanically functions fine, although the trigger return spring is weak. The holster is very good with some mild wear and age-related cracking. A chance to own a piece of Texas law enforcement history!
