Lot # 3308 (Sale Order: 306 of 616)

Finely Engraved Rajput Gunesh Brunswick Style Rifle with Gold Inlaid Borders with Case

This rare belted rifle was manufactured in Ulwur (modernly spelled Alwar) in what is now the Indian State of Rajasthan circa 1860 during the British Raj. Ulwur was once the capital of the princely state of Ulwur ruled by Rajputs until it joined India in 1949. Belted balls were first designed in the 1830s, and the belted British Brunswick upon which this rifle is based proved to be more accurate at long ranges than the Baker Rifle it replaced. The top of the Damascus barrel at the breech reads "GUNESH. GUNMAKER ULWUR- " and the lock plate is marked "GUNESH". The lock plate, hammer, and upper tang have scroll engraving with gold filled borders. A dog with a small animal in its mouth is on the lock plate just ahead of the hammer which has an animal design with gold filled eyes. The trigger guard is engraved with a bird scene, and another engraved bird is visible ahead of the screw on the upper tang. The buttplate features complementary engraving. The barrel has a gold filled stripe at the breech as well as a rectangular pearl insert and is fitted with a blade front sight and a folding rear sight with two leaves. It has a straight wrist half-stock with horn forend cap, initial plate, and multi-point checkering at the wrist and forend. Includes a wooden case with unmarked round inscription plate and fitted green fabric lined interior containing numerous accessories.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel retains 70% of the original brown finished Damascus pattern with some light scratches, oxidation, and a brown patina. 70% of the case colors remain at the breech and on the guard around the nipple. The other components have a dark gray patina with the buttplate and trigger guard retaining 50% of the heat blue finish. 98% plus of the gold fill remains. There are various light scratches throughout particularly on the trigger guard and raised areas of the buttplate. The stock is finely revarnished with a golden tone, glossy varnish, and has crisp checkering. There are some faint scratches and small dings as well as a small chip on the right edge of the forend. Mechanically excellent with a functional half-cock safety lever. Clear markings. The relined case is very good with some light wear and some mild stains on the interior. The exterior is refinished. Magnificent Presentation Cased Pair of Exhibition Quality Gold Damascened French Percussion Dueling/Target Pistols by Prelat of Paris -A) Prelat Percussion Pistol
Percussion dueling pistols were popular in the mid to late 19th century in Continental Europe, particularly in France, and were often made as exhibition and presentation pieces. As duels became ever more rare, these pistols were primarily used for target shooting, sometimes using special dueling targets. They feature gold damascened scrollwork and borders on the barrels, locks, and mounts and ebony half-stocks with fluted wrists and relief carved scrollwork. The barrels have "PRELAT ARQ A PARIS" in raised gilt letters, dovetailed bead front sights, and their bores relined to .38 caliber (likely originally .44-.50 caliber). The pistols are in a French-fitted ebonized case with green baize lining. Miniature Japanese Hiya Taihou Rocket Launcher

Lot # 3322 (Sale Order: 320 of 616)

Miniature Japanese Hiya Taihou Rocket Launcher

Developed after the introduction of matchlock weapon technology to Japan, the hiya taihou was a weapon similar in construction to a Western mortar, though used primarily to launch incendiary rockets, and was a primary armament on Japanese combat ships during the 16th century. Constructed from brass, the cannon itself is 8 1/2 inches long and 4 inches wide, with a 6 inch long and 1 1/2 inch diameter smooth internal bore, a pair of fixed sights (of a style usually associated with Japanese black powder weapons), a brass base and tripod providing support. The base is secured with screws to a black marble plinth; the tripod is primarily cosmetic, and the base has no functional elevation adjustment mechanism. Total assembled dimensions are 9 1/2 inches long, 9 1/2 inches tall, and 5 3/4 inches wide. No markings are present.

Very Fine Relief Chiseled, Gilt, and Carved 28 Bore Flintlock Sporting Gun with Barrel Signed "Lazarino Cominazzo" and Lock Signed "Gio. Botti"

Manufactured c. 1730. This gun and the example in the following lot are very similar to another example owned by W. Keith Neal that was part of a garniture also including a pair of pistols and a rifle. See pages 134-135 of J.F. Hayward's "The Art of the Gunmaker, Vol. II." An April 1965 record indicates Norman R. Blank bought "of Keith [Neal] 1 gun by Gio Botti" for $2,000. This may also refer to the gun in the next lot. Notes from the Norman R. Blank Collection state: "W. Keith Neal tells me that only two of these guns have Cominazzo's signature on the barrel." This would be this example and the one from Neal's collection. The smoothbore barrel has a raised ring at the muzzle, a blade front sight, "LAZARINO COMINAZZO" signed on the fluted octagonal breech section, a plain tang with a folding notch rear sight, "Gio. Botti" signed rounded lock with non-bridled priming pan and tumbler, chiseled relief scroll and monster head designs in the classic Brescian tradition throughout, gilt-brass mounts, original ramrod with a gilt-brass tip, and full-length walnut stock with fine molding and relief and incised carving, including scrollwork accenting the cheekpiece. Two lead collection tags apparently for the Applied Arts School funded by the Grand Dukes of Saxe-Weimar are tied to the trigger guard, and the included certificate of weapon authenticity from F. Theodore Dexter notes the gun as "From the Saxe Wiemar Collection. Mint throughout and with outstanding ornamentation." The barrel channel is signed "K.N. 1915" (Karl Necke, Keeper of the Castle). The barrel tang and barrel channel are marked "86".

Class: Antique

Very fine as refinished with mostly bright lock and barrel with some faint pitting and minor wear, bright gilt finish on the mounts, added front swivel, and crisp designs and markings. Aside from the crack on the left flat and some tiny chips, the stock is also very fine and has crisp carving and molding and general minor handling and storage marks. Mechanically fine. Overall a very attractive European sporting gun that will pair excellently with the following lot.
