Lot # 1025 (Sale Order: 26 of 871)

Desirable Factory Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver with Case

This attractive factory engraved Model 1849 was manufactured in 1864 and features scroll engraving on the sides of the loading lever, barrel lugs, frame and hammer sides and has lighter engraving on the trigger guard and back strap. The engraving is likely by Master Engraved Gustave Young and includes an eagle head on the left side of the barrel lug. The cylinder has the standard stagecoach holdup scene. The barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap are all marked with the full serial number and "E" indicating factory designation for engraving. It also has the partial serial numbers "624" on the loading lever, "6624" on the cylinder and cylinder pin, and "66624" on the wedge. All numbers match. The revolver is fitted with smooth varnished one piece walnut grip that has "6624" handwritten in the back strap mortise at the butt. A case with "JEH" inscribed in ornate script on the lid escutcheon is included and also contains a Colt patent bullet mold, pocket powder flask, measure, key, several lead balls, and Eley Bros. cap tin.

Class: Antique

Fair with a smooth gray-brown patina overall, some faint pitting, mostly distinct engraving other than the left side of the shortened barrel, faint but partially visible cylinder, scene, and mild overall wear on the iron. The grip straps have patches of original silver plating under the grip and otherwise attractive aged patina. The revarnished grip is also fine and has a small chip repair at the toe, a few light scratches, and some minor edge wear. Mechanically fine. The relined case is very good with mild storage wear. Colt Model 1848 Baby Dragoon Percussion Revolver

The Baby Dragoon was the first pocket revolver manufactured at Colt's factory in Hartford, and only an estimated 15,000 were manufactured from 1847 to 1850. Lot # 1029 (Sale Order: 30 of 871)

U.S. Navy Cartridge Conversion Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver

Only 2,200 Model 1861 Navy revolvers are believed to have been factory converted in the mid 1870s. The U.S. Navy had only purchased several hundred of '61 Navies during the Civil War. Like the U.S.N. contract Model 1851 Navy revolvers, these revolvers saw use in the Civil War and remained in use into the late 19th century. This revolver was originally manufactured in 1861 and has a brass blade front sight, the New York address and an anchor on the barrel, matching visible serial numbers aside from the replacement cylinder which is numbered "9422/2894," "COLTS/PATENT" and the 1871 and 1872 patents on the left side of the frame, "361" on the loading gate, "36 CAL" on the trigger guard, and "U.S.N." on the butt.

U.S.N. Colt Richards-Mason Conversion 1851 Navy Revolver

Lot # 1030 (Sale Order: 31 of 871)

U.S. Navy Colt Richards-Mason Cartridge Conversion Model 1851 Navy Revolver

It was manufactured in 1858 and converted in the 1870s and has the iron grip frame and falls fairly late within the 41000-91000 range of the other U.S. Navy conversions. Many of these revolvers saw decades of use by the U.S. Navy in both percussion and cartridge configuration. They weren't replaced until the adoption of the Colt Model 1889. The barrel has a cone front sight and the early Hartford address on top and "R.W.M.[anchor]." marking on the bottom. The left side of the frame has a partial "COLTS/PATENT/US" marking and distinct 1871 and 1872 patent marking. The butt has "U S N." The matching serial number is visible on the bottom of the barrel, frame, and grip straps, and the replacement cylinder is numbered "9398." The loading gate has assembly number "1102."

Class: Antique

Very good with dark mottled gray and brown patina on most of the visible surfaces, some traces of original case colors on the right side of the frame and sides of the hammer, strong original blue in the protected areas of the ejector housing, and general minor marks and scratches. The grip is fine other than the chips at the heel and toe and a faint crack on the left edge and has moderate handling and storage wear. Mechanically fine. This is a solid representative example of the U.S. Navy's first revolver.

Commercial Colt Model 1860 Army Percussion Revolver

Lot # 1032 (Sale Order: 33 of 871)

Very Fine Colt Model 1860 Army Percussion Revolver

Manufactured in 1867 for the civilian market with high polish blue, standard markings and features, otherwise including matching serial numbers on the wedge, barrel, cylinder pin, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, back strap, and varnished grip. What sets this revolver apart is its high condition.

The barrel retains 50% of the original bright blue finish, the cylinder has patches of original bright blue in the breech section, and the back strap has strong original bright blue finish in the upper and lower sections. Most of the blue loss appears to be from flaking rather than wear, but the revolver does show signs of period use. The front strap/trigger guard has strong original silver plating under the grip and otherwise a goldenrod toned patina. There are some light scratches and marks throughout as well as cylinder drag lines. The grip is fine and retains a varnished finish and displays light scrapes and dings on the sides, some chips and wear on the lower edges, and heavy scrapes and strike marks on the butt. Colt U.S. Contract Model 1861 Special Rifle-Musket with Bayonet

Lot # 1036 (Sale Order: 37 of 871)

Excellent Colt U.S. Civil War Contract Model 1861 Special Percussion Rifle-Musket with Bayonet

Colt manufactured approximately 100,000 of these rifles between 1861 and 1865 using surplus machinery from the Robbins & Lawrence Co. that had been originally used to produce Pattern 1853 rifle-muskets for the British during the Crimean War. They were manufactured under contract for the Union Army, for state contracts, and also for sale on the commercial market. The Colt Model 1861s used the same folding leaf rear sight as the Springfield Model 1861. The hammer, bolster, barrel bands and ramrod introduced on the Colt Model 1861 were subsequently utilized on the Springfield Model 1863. The trigger is casehardened, and the rear sight and nipple are blued; all of the remaining metal components are "national armory bright." The walnut stock has an oil finish. It has the standard markings and features and is dated "1863" on the lock and barrel. The socket bayonet is stamped "U.S." Though Colt's revolvers are more often associated with the company's contributions to the Union war effort, the Model 1861 rifles would have been more important on the battlefields. Most of the fighting was done by infantrymen with rifles.

Class: Antique

Excellent, as-issued. The metal is the crisp original armory bright and has some oil staining. The markings are crisp. The stock is also excellent and has mostly crisp edges, distinct cartouches, small storage dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.

U.S. Navy Colt Model 1883 Gatling Gun with Tripod

Lot # 1039 (Sale Order: 40 of 871)

Incredibly Rare, Historic, Well Documented Two Digit Serial Number 37 U.S. Navy Inspected Colt Model 1883 Gatling Gun with 1885 Dated Ordnance Department Tripod Issued to the U.S.S. Miantonomoh (BM-5)

Offered here is an incredible piece of U.S. Navy history that is usually only found in the most prestigious museums. It is a U.S. Navy inspected Colt Model 1883 Gatling gun with tripod documented by the U.S. Navy as being aboard the U.S.S. Miantonomoh (BM-5), an Amphitrite class monitor launched on 5 December 1876. Although exact production figures are unknown, U.S. Navy Model 1883 Gatling Guns are much rarer than their Army counterparts. An example that is well-documented to a specific ship is next to impossible to find. This Model 1883 Gatling gun is undeniably worthy of display at our nation’s finest military museums. Ahead of the Accles drum magazine the casing is marked/engraved "U.S. NAVY/No 37/1884" followed the inspector initials "H.W.L." The number "37" is also on the rear of the yoke. In front of the magazine is the "GATLING GUN/PATENTED" marked plate and below the plate the casing is marked "MANUFD BY/Colts Pat. F.A. Mfg. Co./HARTFORD CONN." The trunnions are marked "WT 205/LBS" and "No 403/Cal 45." There is an adjustable rear sight on each side of the rear cover and a fixed front sight on each side on the casing. The tripod brass top plate is marked "ORD. DEPT. U.S. N.Y.W 1885[anchor]A.H.W. NO. 2." The accompanying letter on Naval History Division, Department of the Navy letterhead confirms that U.S. Navy records identify this Model 1883 Gatling gun by serial number 37 as being delivered on board the Miantonomoh in May 1885 while anchored in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Finding serial numbers of weapons in U.S. Navy records for this time period is nearly nonexistent. As explained in the letter, “Apparently [this Model 1883] was logged because it was delivered as a separate, crated shipment and inspected upon arrival to ascertain if ‘it was all there.’ Normally, weapons were brought aboard, taken on the Gunnery Departments accountability lists, and that was the end of it. As weapons were transferred, they were expunged from the record, which was itself, every year or so, ‘cleaned up’ by doing a new sheet and destroying the old one. Upon decommissioning, once everything was accounted for, the ship’s records were superfluous and destroyed. I am quite certain that there would be no other reference to this particular weapon in existence.” A copy of the official Miantonomoh log book entry clearly listing this Gatling gun by serial number as aboard the ship on 12 May 1885 is also included. According to the log, the gun was “received on board at 10.05” along with a second Gatling gun, serial number 403. A U.S.S Miantonomoh tally and a 1918 published U.S. Navy warship pictorial book "The United States Navy from the Revolution to Date" are also included. The Miantonomoh is pictured in the book. U.S.S. Miantonomoh (1863) was an ironclad monitor built for the U.S. Navy during the American Civil War, was the first turreted ship to cross an open ocean, the first U.S. monitor to visit Europe, carried the Assistant Secretary of the Navy to Russia in 1866 and in 1875 was broken up with materials used in the construction of a larger, more heavily armored, iron-hulled monitor which became the second Miantonomoh. Miantonomoh (BM-5) was in and out of commission at various times from 1876 until it was struck from the Navy warship list in December 1915. In its most memorable role the Miantonomoh was assigned to the Key West Squadron and actively participated in the blockade of Havana during the Spanish-American War.

Class: Antique

Very fine overall. The casing has an attractive dark mustard aged appearance. Most of the paint on the handle remains. The markings are clear. The magazine shows some handling/storage marks. The spirit level is cracked (fluid absent). The tripod is fine with period repainted wood legs. Mechanically excellent. Do not miss your chance to acquire a rare U.S. Navy Colt Model 1883 Gatling Gun missing from even the most advance American military collections. This example is worthy of the finest museum or private collection!

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel and magazine have nearly 60% plus of the blue finish. Wear is limited to some very minor spots of age discoloration on the barrel flats on either side of the front sight and some edge wear on the barrel edges. The Winchester legend and caliber marking are crisp. The loading gate has nearly 85% of the bright blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger and lever have 30% plus of the case colors with some silvering on edges and contact points. The case colors on the buttplate have faded to a mottled silver gray with traces of light pitting on the toe and heel. The highly figured stock and forearm are in very fine to excellent condition with sharp checkering and scattered light handling marks and very minor finish wear on the rear of the stock at the junction with the buttplate and the rear of the forearm at the junction with the receiver. This is an attractive example of a scarce deluxe, special order, Winchester Model 1876 "Centennial Rifle".

Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. Lever Action Navy Pistol

Lot # 1042 (Sale Order: 43 of 871)

Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., Lever Action Navy Pistol with Engraved Family Crest

Manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., of New Haven Connecticut c. 1856. The Volcanic Company manufactured an estimated 1200 Navy pistols with six-inch barrels between July 1855 and April 1857 when the company was reorganized as the New Haven Arms Co., by principal stock-holder Oliver Winchester. The pistol has the distinctive combination of brass frame, octagon barrel with integral, eight-shot magazine and lever with round finger hole. The pistol has a pinch-blade front sight on the barrel and a fixed, dove-tail mounted, rear sight on the receiver. The hammer has coarse, hand-cut, knurling on the spur. The pistol has two-piece, varnished, walnut grips. The top barrel flat is stamped with the legend: "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN./FEB 14. 1854" in three lines. The serial number is stamped: (1) on the right side of the loading lever, (2) on the left side of the butt underneath the grip and (3) on the inside of both grips. All of the serial numbers match. The right side plate is light engraved with a family crest that depicts an arm clutching a dagger (possibly the Armstrong family crest). The engraving is well-executed and of the period. The barrel/magazine is blued, the hammer, trigger and lever are casehardened, the trigger spring shows traces of fire blue finish and the grips have a high polish piano finish. The receiver and side-plates have the natural brass finish.

Class: Antique

Fine. This pistol is retains 60% of the original blue finish. The balance of the blue on the barrel/magazine has aged to an attractive, plum-colored patina. The barrel/magazine has scattered dents and light handling marks. The barrel legend is unevenly stamped which is typical of Volcanic barrel markings but the markings are generally crisp. The case colors on the trigger and lever have aged to a mottled brown patina. Large amounts of the case colors are present on the sides of the hammer. The brass receiver and side plates have an attractive untouched patina. The left side plate has some dents along the upper joint and there are scattered nicks and scratches on the receiver and both side plates. The edges of the ejection port are battered. The engraved crest on the right side plate is light but crisp. The walnut grips remain in very fine overall condition with scattered minor handling marks and retain at least 85% of the original varnish finish. This is a fine example of a rare and historically significant Volcanic Navy pistol.
