Citizens' Guard of Hawaii Winchester 1876 Musket with Bayonet

Lot # 1002 (Sale Order: 3 of 956)

Rare, Documented Citizens' Guard of Hawaii Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Musket with Saber Bayonet and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1882 as a third model with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The accompanying factory letter lists this Model 1876 as a musket when received in the warehouse on November 2, 1882, and was part of a shipment of with 298 muskets and 81 carbines that left the factory on November 22. According to records kept at the Hawaii State Archives, this musket is listed by serial number as a Winchester in .45-75 caliber issued to S.W. Paty, a 40 year old "head carpenter" commissioned as a quarter master serving with Division 3, Pahala Co. of the Citizens' Guard of Hawaii. A copy of this document is included. In an accompanying letter researcher John Bell speculates that due to Paty's "head carpenter" occupation "he no doubt worked for the sugar plantation in Pahala where he lived." The Citizens' Guard of Hawaii was a militia used against royalists forces who opposed the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The 1895 counter-revolution in Hawaii was the last major military operation conducted by Kingdom of Hawaii loyalists. Around 500 Citizen Guards participated in the brief conflict that occurred from January 6 to January 9, 1895, and consisted of three major battles. Three years later Hawaii was annexed to the United States. The Guard was outfitted with Winchester Model 1876 and 1886 rifles, and records of many of these arms are kept at the Hawaii State Archives. The musket features a bayonet lug on the right side of the forend cap, folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards, the number "55" stamped on the right side of the buttstock, sling swivels, cleaning rod fitted to the left side of the full length forearm, and crescent buttplate. Comes with a saber bayonet and brass trimmed leather scabbard. Consignor states it was purchased from John Hawk.

Class: Antique

Very good. Traces of faded original blue finish remain in the protected areas, otherwise a mixture of mottled brown and gray patinas. There are a few patches of minor pitting .The wood is also very good with some chipping and a long stabilized crack at the upper tang, and minor-moderate dings and scratches. The bayonet is very good with pitting on the cleaned blade, and the scabbard is good with age cracking and flaking. Mechanically excellent. An identified Citizens' Guard of Hawaii soldier issued Model 1876 musket missing from even the most advanced Winchester collections.

Hawaii Guard Winchester Model 1886 Carbine with HMP Marking

Lot # 1003 (Sale Order: 4 of 956)

Very Scarce, Documented Citizens' Guard of Hawaii Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action .45-70 Carbine with Hawaii Mounted Police Marking

Manufactured in 1898. According to records kept at the Hawaii State Archives, this carbine is listed by serial number as a Model 1886 issued to the Citizens' Guard of Hawaii. A copy of this document is included. The Guard was a militia used against royalists forces who opposed the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii. For further reading see for example George Madis' book "The Winchester Book" (page 626). Both sides of the buttstock are stamped "HMP" along with the number "14". Based on included research complied by noted Winchester collector Lewis Yearout, "HMP" stands for Hawaii Mounted Police, a "sub-group" of the Guard, and "14" is the rack number. As retold in an accompanying letter, this carbine was found with 19 other Model 1886 carbines all having the "HMP" marking. Yearout purchased the carbine from Alan Parker of Parker Guns in Hilo, Hawaii. The carbine features a pinned beaded front sight, folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards, two-line barrel address legend, "45-70" stamped on the barrel at the breech, saddle ring mounted on the left side of the receiver, "-MODEL 1896-" stamped on the upper tang, two-line patent dates marking along with the serial number on the lower tang and carbine stock.

Class: Antique

Very good. The carbine has a mottled dark brown patina. The wood is good with refinish visible on right side of buttstock, some surface chipping and minor dings and scratches. The stock markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. Truly a rare Winchester Model 1886 carbine documented to the Citizens' Guard of Hawaii with even rarer Hawaii Mounted Police stock marking.

U.S. Contract New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1004 (Sale Order: 5 of 956)

Documented Martially Inspected, U.S. Civil War Contract New Haven Arms Co., Henry Lever Action Rifle

This Henry lever action rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company circa November 1863 and sold to the Ordnance Department as part of a contract for 800 rifles on December 30, 1863. These rifles were issued to the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry Regiment. Although the Ordnance Department purchased approximately 1,730 Henry rifles from the New Haven Arms Company between April 1863 and May 1865, only the 800 rifles purchased under the December 30, 1863, contract have Ordnance inspection marks. The 1st D.C. Cavalry was originally raised for police and provost duty in the District of Columbia and reported directly to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. The regiment was subsequently assigned to suppress Confederate partisan rangers led by Col. John S. Mosby operating in Northern Virginia. In the spring of 1864, the 1st D.C. Cavalry was assigned to Kautz's Cavalry Brigade and saw action at Petersburg, Virginia. The regiment lost significant numbers of Henry rifles in combat around Petersburg. When Confederate President Jefferson Davis fled Richmond in April 1865, his bodyguard was partially armed with Henry rifles; possibly captured from the 1st D.C. Cavalry. This rifle has the distinctive Ordnance inspection marks found only on the 800 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department on December 30, 1863. These markings consist of the initials of Ordnance Sub-Inspector Charles G. Chapman (C.G.C.) stamped in block letters on the right side of the barrel at the junction with the receiver and the script initials "C.G.C." in an oblong cartouche stamped vertically on the right side of the stock wrist. A "C" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the right barrel flat between the "C.G.C." mark and the receiver. "H" and "C" sub-inspection marks are stamped on the right side of the receiver near the barrel, and a "C" is stamped on the right side of the buttplate heel. The rifle has the distinctive 24-inch octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel has a flat back, nickel silver front sight and folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight has a 900 yard center notch and elevator bar with rounded ends. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the small first style legend "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS. CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." that uses all serif letters except for the second "NEWHAVEN" which is stamped in block letters. The barrel has the second style, large diameter, brass follower, and the receiver has the second style, beveled follower cut. The second pattern brass receiver lacks the rear sight dovetail that was eliminated around serial number 3000. The first style buttplate has a rounded heel and hinged trap door. The rifle, correctly, lacks the sling swivel on the left side of the stock and the loop for a sling hook on the left side of the barrel. At the time the government contract was executed the sling swivel and loop were special order items and are not found on most U.S. contract Henry rifles. The barrel and integral magazine were blued, the hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened, the receiver and buttplate have the natural brass finish and the straight grain, American walnut stock is oil finished. The serial number is located: on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, on the lower left side of the receiver tang beneath the stock, in the stock upper tang inlet, on the inside of the buttplate below the lower screw hole and on the shanks of both hand-fitted buttplate screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. The tang screws, correctly, are not stamped with the rifle serial number. This rifle is pictured and identified in John Hamilton’s article “The Dilemma of the Martially Marked Henry Rifle” published in the included November 1986 issue of "The Gun Report". Also comes with Hamilton’s rough drafts of the article, collection of letters from fellow collectors recording the details of their Henrys, mostly written to Hamilton after the article was published and providing a wealth of desirable collector information, and letters from "The Gun Report" regarding publication of the article.

Class: Antique

Very good. This rifle has all of the original components including the rear sight. The barrel/magazine has a smooth, silver-gray patina with sharp edges and crisp legend, serial numbers and inspection marks. The brass receiver and buttplate are in very fine condition with an attractive, un-touched patina. The receiver joints are perfect. The inspection marks on the right side of the receiver are sharp. Wear on the receiver and buttplate is limited to a few insignificant scratches and handling marks. The hammer retains traces of the original muted case colors. The case colors on the trigger and hammer have aged to a brown p

Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Rifle with 36" Barrel

Lot # 1005 (Sale Order: 6 of 956)

Exceedingly Scarce Documented Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with 36 Inch Extra Length Barrel and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1892 as a Third Model with dust cover rail integral to the receiver and dust cover with serrations at the rear and ordered with all manner of desirable special order features. These start with the extra length, 36 inch barrel and casehardened receiver but also include Lyman sights, a set trigger, and a very finely figured and multi-point checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with ebony grip insert. The buttstock was not removed due to the screw being marred. The Lyman sights are a blade front and tang mounted peep, and it has an elevation adjustable notch rear sight. It has the standard two-line address/patent and caliber markings on the barrel, model designation on the upper tang, serial number on the lower, and caliber on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. Model 1873 rifles with extra length barrels are fairly rare on their own, but the addition of all these special features makes a rifle such as this truly scarce. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration, including all of the special order features previously listed, as well as receipt at the warehouse on 26 October 1892 and shipment on 27 October 1892 in order number 8487. Also included is a copy of the page of the Winchester ledger that features this rifle, where it is again listed with the 36 inch barrel, set trigger, checkered stock, and Lyman sights.

Class: Antique

Very good, retains 25% of the original blue finish on the barrel and magazine with the balance mostly an attractive antique plum-brown patina. The receiver shows some strong flashes of the original fiery case colors with the balance mostly a silver-grey patina. The wood is also very good showing beautiful figure, minor dings and scratches scattered throughout, and moderately worn but well-defined checkering. Magazine follower absent. Mechanically fine. A truly scarce rifle that would instantly become the centerpiece of all but the most advance Winchester lever action collections.

New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Carbine

Lot # 1010 (Sale Order: 11 of 956)

Scarce New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Carbine with 21-Inch Barrel, Factory Engraving and Silver-Plated Finish

This Volcanic lever action carbine was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1857. This carbine has a rare 21-inch, "Type II" half-rib barrel with integral 25-shot magazine and nickel-silver, square back, front sight blade. The top flat is stamped with the New Haven Arms Company legend: "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14. 1854" in one line. The brass receiver and crescent buttplate are silver-plated and factory engraved with broad, open scrollwork. The receiver has a dovetail mounted rear sight with thumb-wheel elevator. The rear sight, bolt, and top of the cartridge elevator are fire blue. The hammer has deep, border-less, hand-cut knurling on the spur. The hammer, trigger, and lever are color casehardened. The straight grain American walnut stock has a high polish varnished "piano" finish. The serial number is stamped on: (1) the heel of the stock beneath the buttplate, (2) the inside of the buttplate heel, (3) the lower left side of the receiver tang and (4) shanks of the hand fitted buttplate heel screw, rear upper tang screw and lower tang screw. The lower buttplate screw is a replacement, and the front tang screw is not serial numbered. All of the visible serial numbers match. The New Haven Arms Company manufactured approximately 1,000 carbines with 16 1/2, 21 and 25-inch barrels between 1857 and 1860. Nearly all of these carbines had 16 1/2-inch barrels. Carbines with 21 and 25 inch barrels are rare. Volcanic carbines are rare and historically significant firearms. The combination of "rocket-ball" primed cartridge, self-cocking toggle action and integral spring loaded magazine represented a huge advance in firearms design. When combined with reliable rimfire and centerfire cartridges, the modified Volcanic action served as the basis for the Henry rifle and Winchester Model 1866, 1873, and 1876 rifles and carbines.

Class: Antique

Fine. The carbine barrel and stock have been professionally refinished. The brass receiver and buttplate retain 40% of the original delicate silver-plated finish and remain in fine overall condition. The factory engraving on the receiver top, sides, upper tang, and the buttplate heel is crisp. The side plate joints are perfect, and the receiver and buttplate have no significant scratches or handling marks. The barrel has an attractive plum blue finish with sharp edges. Traces of light pitting are visible beneath the finish near the New Haven Arms legend, and the markings are faint. The stock shows minimal handling wear. Significant amounts of the original niter blue finish are present on the cartridge elevator, bolt, and rear sight. With the exception of the lower buttplate screw and un-marked upper tang screw, all of the components appear to be original to the carbine. This is a good-looking example of a factory engraved, silver-plated New Haven Arms Company Volcanic carbine with rare 21-inch barrel. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.

The barrel has the two-line address marking ahead of the rear sight, "38-72 W.C.F." marked at the breech, a dovetail blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight. The upper tang is marked "WINCHESTER/MODEL 1895." The patent date is marked behind the trigger. The forearm and straight grip stock are nicely figured walnut. The buttstock is fitted with a solid crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Very fine, retaining 85% original blue finish with thinning and high edge wear. The magazine is mostly a smooth brown patina. 90% original case colors remain. The wood is also very fine showing some minor handling marks and retaining most of the original finish. Mechanically excellent. A very fine representative example of a desirable flat side receiver Model 1895 worthy of any Winchester collection.

Very Fine Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Musket with Bayonet

This is an excellent very late production M1873 3rd pattern musket. These muskets were produced throughout production with the majority being in the late 1890s and early 1900s in an attempt to generate sale in South America and to compete with the bolt action rifles being sold by the Europeans. Prince of Monaco Presented Winchester Model 1895 .405 WCF Rifle

Lot # 1026 (Sale Order: 25 of 956)

Historic Royal Hunt Prince Albert I of Monaco Presented Winchester Model 1895 Takedown Lever Action .405 WCF Rifle

This historic Winchester Model 1895 rifle was presented to U.S. Yellowstone Park Ranger Harry E. Miller by Prince Albert I of Monaco. The large silver oval presentation plaque is on the right side of the buttstock and reads, "PRESENTED TO/Ranger Harry E. Miller/U.S. FOREST SERVICE/BY/Prince Albert I of Monaco/OCT. 13 1913." The left side of the magazine has a hand marked inscription: "Prince Albert I of Monaco/to/Harry E. Miller-Forest Ranger" and "Oct-13-1913." The rifle was manufactured in 1913 (according to the Winchester Collectors Association) and is chambered in the highly desirable .405 WCF big game caliber. It features raised dovetail blade and elevation adjustable notch sights, standard Winchester markings including the factory oval proofs, and smooth straight grip stock fitted with a checkered steel shotgun style buttplate. Prince Albert I of Monaco toured the United States in 1913. A Lexington, Kentucky, newspaper quoted the Prince as saying that "before anything else, I want to go West and shoot big game." His chance to hunt big game came while visiting Wyoming as the guest of Mr. A.A. Anderson, owner of the Palette Ranch. Years earlier the Prince and Anderson were students in Paris. Never one to miss out on a grand PR stunt, famed Wild West showman Buffalo Bill offered to host the hunt near his lodge, Pahaska Tepee, located near Yellowstone National Park's east entrance. A camp, nicknamed Camp Monaco, was selected about 15 miles north of Cody's lodge, and U.S. Yellowstone Ranger Harry E. Miller oversaw the two week royal hunt. The Camp Monaco site was marked with an elaborate carving on a tree by royal artist Louis Tinayre, and today the carving is on displayed at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. According to curator of the Buffalo Bill-Western History Gallery John Rumm, "Albert's visit marked the first time that a European ruler had visited the United States. Although his visit was scientific and personal — it wasn't diplomatic — that tree became significant of another ruler coming to the county and honoring the United States with his presence." The Prince harvested a bear, an elk and a deer and left in awe at Yellowstone's grand majesty. The prince expressed his gratitude for putting on the hunt by presenting Ranger Miller with this Model 1895. One hundred years later in 2013, Prince Albert II celebrated the centennial of his great, great grandfather's hunt by visiting the Buffalo Bill Historical Center at Cody and presenting the first ever Camp Monaco Prize for biodiversity research in the Yellowstone region. Comes with five original large format 8x14 inch silver gelatin photos of Buffalo Bill, the Prince and his entourage and Ranger Miller, two original photos of the Camp Monaco carving, a circa 1950 photo of Ranger Miller posing with his gun collection which includes this Model 1895, Ranger Miller's U.S. Department of Agriculture notebook containing the personally penned autographs and mailing address of Prince Albert I plus those of his entourage, and copies of secondary source material related to the 1913 hunt and its centennial.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

The barrel, magazine and lever retain 75% original blue finish and the receiver and takedown collar retain light to moderate amounts of original blue finish, otherwise mostly a smooth brown patina. The wood is also fine with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A highly historic royal presentation Winchester Model 1895 rifle worthy of any private or public collection!
