Engraved Presentation Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3025 (Sale Order: 26 of 938)

Historic Deluxe Factory Engraved Presentation Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle

This is a fine example of a factory engraved and inscribed Winchester Model 1866 rifle that was manufactured circa 1869. The rifle has a blue octagon barrel, full-length magazine, casehardened hammer and lever and gold plated brass receiver, forearm cap and crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are highly figured "3X" fancy grain walnut. The barrel has a dovetail mounted front sight with replacement blade and a Henry style folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. Factory sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. The butt trap has the original four-piece jointed iron cleaning rod. The forearm cap, receiver and buttplate are factory engraved with bold Germanic style scrollwork on a stippled background. The engraving fully covers the receiver sides, side plates and extends to the top of receiver, upper tang, bottom of the cartridge elevator, lower receiver and lower tang. The engraved panels on the receiver have single and double-line scalloped borders. The left side plate features an engraved scroll inscribed "MONTGOMERY/GUARD". An urn-shaped panel on the right side plate is inscribed "From/a Friend". Smaller black urn-shaped panels are located on the forward portions of both sides of the receiver. The engraving is not signed but the style is similar to work attributed to Master Engraver Conrad F. Ulrich (see Model 1866 Rifle serial no. 35969 illustrated on page 60 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson). The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEWHAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860". The serial number, "36050", is stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and on the inside of the buttplate. "6050" is stamped in the top tang inlet of the stock. All of the visible serial numbers match. The left side of the lower tang is stamped "XXX" beneath the stock. The Montgomery Guard was part of the California State Militia and was named for Gen. William Reading Montgomery who was an 1825 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and served in the 3rd Infantry. Montgomery fought in the Mexican War and was twice wounded but remained at the head of his regiment until the capture of Mexico City. Montgomery served in the Civil War and was commissioned as a Brig. General of U.S. Volunteers in 1861. The Montgomery Guard was mustered out of service in 1866 but returned to duty in 1868 with Company A 1st Infantry Battalion, California National Guard.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle retains 40% of the original blue and gold plated finish. The blue finish on the barrel is faded and shows light edge wear with some scattered pitting and finish loss on the forward edges of the barrel and magazine near the muzzle. The factory legend on the top of the barrel is sharp. The receiver, forearm cap and buttplate retain considerable amounts of gold plated finish in protected areas. The case colors on the lever have aged to a gray-brown patina. Most of the case colors are present on the hammer. The engraving on the forearm cap, receiver and buttplate is very sharp. The stock and forearm retain most of the high polish "piano" finish with scattered minor handling marks. The stock has an old crack in the wrist that was period repaired with rectangular metal plates on either side of the wrist secured by screws. A modern professional restoration removed the plates, replaced the screws with wooden plugs and refinished this portion of the stock. This is an attractive example of a rare and historic Deluxe Presentation Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1866 rifle.

Civil War Era New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3026 (Sale Order: 27 of 938)

Civil War Era New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

This Henry rifle was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. August 1863. This rifle is accompanied by a signed statement from a direct relative indicating that that the rifle was reportedly owned by John M. Lycan (1843-1910) of Paris, Illinois, and that Lycan carried the rifle in the Civil War as a Union soldier when he participated in General William T. Sherman's "March From Atlanta to the Sea" in late 1864. He served as a private in Company E of the 66th Illinois Infantry. The rifle is a mid-production Henry with first style receiver with alternate rear sight dove-tail and first style buttplate with rounded heel. The distinctive 24-inch octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine has nickel-silver flat-back front sight blade. A fixed rear sight is mounted in the barrel dove-tail and the original, folding leaf, rear sight is mounted in the receiver dove-tail. The rear sight has a 900 yard center notch, elevator bar with rounded ends and, properly, lacks an elevator bar stop screw. The magazine has the second style, large diameter, brass follower, and the receiver has the second style, beveled, follower cut. The hammer is hand-cut knurling on the spur and lacks a half-cock notch. The left side of the stock has a factory sling swivel and the left side of the barrel is fitted with a screw-fastened factory loop for a sling hook. The buttplate has a hinged trap door. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." in two lines ahead of the rear sight dove-tail. This legend has the distinctive combination of serif lettering with the final "NEWHAVEN" stamped in block letters. The serial number is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the lower left side of the receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, (4) on the inside of the buttplate toe and (5) on the shanks of both hand-fitted buttplate screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. The tang screws on Henry rifles in this serial number range are not serial numbered. The rifle originally had a blued barrel/magazine with color casehardened hammer, trigger and lever and brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The straight grain, American walnut stock is oil finished. Henry rifles were privately purchased in large numbers by federal soldiers in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan regiments who wanted the firepower offered by the 15-shot lever action Henry rifle. Many soldiers who re-enlisted following their original three-year term of service in 1864 used their re-enlistment bonus to pay for the Henry rifles. This rifle is in the same serial number range as the 500 Henry rifles purchased by 7th Illinois Veteran Volunteer Infantry in 1864.

Class: Antique

Very good. This rifle remains in untouched "attic" condition. The period custom made fixed rear sight mounted on the barrel is period and the rear sight mounted in the receiver dove-tail is the correct style for a Henry rifle in this serial number range. The barrel/magazine has a dull brown patina with scattered surface discoloration but no pitting. The barrel edges are sharp and the New Haven Arms Co. legend and serial number are clear. The brass receiver and crescent buttplate remain in fine condition with an attractive, untouched aged patina. The side plate joints are not battered and the receiver has no significant handling marks or scratches. The buttplate has a few spots of age discoloration and is in very good overall condition. The hammer, trigger and lever have a mottled gray-brown patina. The lever has some spots of age discoloration on contact points. The walnut stock remains in very good overall condition with only light handling wear. Most of the original oil finish remains. This is a solid example of the most advanced rifle used in the Civil War. Innovative and historically significant, the Henry rifle is a key piece in any collection of Civil War militaria and an essential part of any comprehensive collection of Winchester firearms.

Special Order Winchester 1873 22 Rifle Attributed to S.F. Cody

Lot # 3029 (Sale Order: 30 of 938)

Special Order Winchester Model 1873 .22 Rimfire Rifle Attributed to Wild West Showman and Aviation Pioneer Samuel F. Cody (Cowdery)

Manufactured in 1902. The rifle has a special order half-octagon/half-round barrel; .22 caliber Model 1873 rifles with half-round barrels are rare and collectable. British proof marks are stamped on the left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver and on the left side of the receiver. The January 24, 1996, Sotheby's auction catalog lists this rifle as part of the S.F. Cody material sold at auction (the catalog is included). Samuel Franklin Cody is often mistaken for the famous Wild West showman William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody. There is no genealogical relationship between the two men and in fact, Cody is not Samuel’s original surname. Born Samuel Franklin Cowdery in Davenport, Iowa, in 1867, he would later change his surname to Cody for theatrical purposes (circa 1889). For the flamboyant Samuel, using the famous last name Cody was a means to attract a bigger audience to his Wild West shows. Samuel Cody left Davenport circa 1888 when he started to travel with Adam Forepaugh’s Circus and Wild West Show. With his wife Maud, the duo performed, as one newspaper article described, "The greatest living revolver shots. Breaking balls held in each others mouth and equally difficult shots, using 45 caliber revolvers.” In 1890, the couple moved to England and by 1892 created the S. F. Cody and Company which later changed to S. F. Cody and Infant Son and Company. As the star in his Wild West show, Cody gained the acclaim of European audiences and in the late 1890s appeared in the “Wild West Melodrama”, a popular theater production at the time. At the turn of the century, Cody began his successful experimentations with man lifting kites. Exactly why Cody showed an interest in man lifting kites remains unclear. Perhaps he was enticed by the endless showmanship possibilities of early flight. Nonetheless, Cody patented a man lifting kite in 1901 and offered the design to British War Office to be used in the Second Boer War. While his design was not purchased, the kite made several successful demonstration flights up to 2,000 feet. He would later successfully cross the English Channel in a kite towed by a Berthon boat. As development in aviation progressed, so did Cody’s interest in flight. He would be involved in designing gliders and airships, and in October 1908 Cody is credited for piloting the first official flight of a heavier than air machine in Great Britain. Along with his passenger famed cricketer William Evans, Cody was killed on August 7, 1913 when the airplane they were flying in broke up. It has been estimated that 100,000 people attended Cody’s funeral procession and today Cody is buried near a memorial to his son, Samuel Franklin Leslie Cody, who was a Royal Flying Corps pilot killed in action in 1917. The rifle has the Winchester high polish blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and dust cover. The hammer, loading lever and crescent steel buttplate have a casehardened finish. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The rifle has the distinctive .22 caliber right side plate with no loading gate, front loading magazine and magazine tube with late pattern flared spring. The barrel has a dove-tail mounted front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style rear sight. The buttplate has a sliding brass trap. The top; of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "22 SHORT" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is engraved: "22 CAL./SHORT" in two lines. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL. 1873" in fancy script with foliate devices at either end of the marking. The serial number is stamped on the lower receiver tang.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine. The rifle retains 90% of the original high polish blue and casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine have nearly all of the blue finish intact. The receiver and side plates have light edge wear and some scattered discoloration, part of which appears to be hardened grease. Most of the finish wear is concentrated on the upper tang which has a darkened aged patina. The case colors of the hammer and loading lever have aged to a muted gray. The casehardened finish on the buttplate has a silver-gray patina. The stock and forearm both are in fine condition with a number of minor handling marks. Nearly all of the original varnish finish is present on the stock and forearm. The factory markings on the barrel and receiver and the British proof marks are crisp. This is a highly desirable example of a rare .22 caliber Winchester Model 1873 rifle with special order h

Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .44-40

Lot # 3034 (Sale Order: 35 of 938)

Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .44-40 W.C.F.

Manufactured in 1910 and has a full octagon barrel chambered for the popular .44-40 W.C.F with a German silver blade front sight, elevation adjustable flat top rear sight, and standard markings. The smooth stock and forearm are American walnut. The .44-40 cartridge is one of the few cartridges synonymous with the American West. The Model 1892s were manufactured after the official closing of the frontier, but the West was far from fully "civilized" in the first part of the 20th century. Train robberies, bank hold-ups, and occasional disturbances of the peace were not uncommon, and a good rifle and coordinating sidearm in a versatile caliber like the .44-40 would have been invaluable out on the range.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. 75% plus of the original finish remains; most of the loss is due to some flaking on the receiver. The hammer and lever retain significant, though lightly faded, original case colors. The balance has gray and brown patina. The wood is fine with a moderate amount of dings and scratches and a couple of chips at the edges. The action functions fine, and the markings are crisp.

Class: Antique

Very fine, retaining 75% plus original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. There is a series of scratches on the right side of the receiver. 60% of original case colors remain on the hammer. A chip is missing from the forearm (upper rear right side), otherwise the wood is very fine showing minor handling/storage evidence and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. Documented Winchester Deluxe Model 1885 Takedown Rifle

Lot # 3039 (Sale Order: 40 of 938)

Documented Winchester Semi-Deluxe Model 1885 High Wall Takedown Single Shot Rifle in Extremely Scarce .32 Ideal with Scope and Winchester Gun Museum Letter

The accompanying Winchester Gun Museum letter states the rifle had a 30 inch half octagon No. 3 barrel in .32 Ideal, plain trigger, and checkered pistol grip stock when shipped on March 2, 1907. The letter lists a rework date of March 21, 1907, which is when the rifle was modified to current configuration. The rifle is in takedown configuration with a 30 inch round barrel (fully crowned, rare feature) in .32 Ideal and checkered pistol grip stock with trapdoor crescent buttplate. The rifle is pictured and described in Madis' "The Winchester Book" on page 268. According to Madis, factory records for this rifle feature the notation "will require other sight equipment for John before the match." Madis concludes: "Winchester has always had a great number of enthusiastic target shooters employed in the plant. This rifle may have belonged to one of them; this would explain the prompt return and the notation for other sights "for John". The barrel has a windage adjustable front sight with spirit level, filler block in the rear sight slot, and Winchester B-4 scope mounted 7 inches center to center. Note the Winchester factory oval proof on the barrel is stamped ahead of the rear scope mount, indicating the mounts were factory installed. A second Winchester factory oval proof is correctly stamped on top of the receiver. The underside of the barrel is stamped "3," indicating weight, just ahead of the forearm and "3/32 IDEAL" under the forearm. There is also a Lyman tang peep sight. The pistol grip area has the date "1907" attractively carved on the left side and "A-K" on the front between the tang and the Winchester hard rubber grip cap. The right side of the buttstock has a carved monogram. The left side of the barrel has the two-line Winchester address/patent dates marking and caliber designation "32 IDEAL." It is believed that no more than 233 1885s were built in .32 Ideal. The left side of the lower tang has the number "2003" crossed off followed by "XXX 20824 CF." The butt is stamped "224," and the buttplate has the number "457."

Class: Antique

Fine as period factory refurbished/reconfigured. The rifle retains 97% factory blue finish with slight thinning and edge wear on the balance. 95% case colors remain on the lever and buttplate. The wood is fine with a stress crack near the lower tang, some minor dings and scratches, and crisp checkering overall. Set trigger needs work, otherwise action functions. The scope has hazy optics.

Lot # 3040 (Sale Order: 41 of 938)

Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Musket in Scarce 32-40 Caliber

Manufactured in 1901. According to the consignor, this musket will factory letter as being chambered in .32-40 caliber and having globe front (currently a blade), sporting rear and Lyman tang (currently absent) sights when shipped on April 26, 1901. High Wall Muskets are rarely encountered chambered in .32-40. In fact, we have not cataloged any other High Wall muskets in .32-40 caliber. This is a first model musket as identified by the two barrel bands retained by band springs and the lack of finger grooves on the forearm. The barrel is marked with the two-line address (partially obscured by the rear barrel band) and "32-40." A cleaning rod is carried in the forearm, and there are sling swivels on the underside of the front barrel band and buttstock. The lower tang has the patent date marking and the serial number, and the upper tang is blank. Formerly of the Peter and Patty Murray collection.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. 95% plus refinished blue remains showing some high edge wear. The remaining surfaces retain 95% original case colors. Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Flat Side .45 Express Rifle

Lot # 3041 (Sale Order: 42 of 938)

Very Fine Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Flat Side Rifle in Extremely Rare .45 Express Caliber

The Model 1885 was designed by John Browning who sold the designs to Winchester. It filled Winchester's need for a more accurate, longer range, and harder hitting rifle than their lever action designs of the time. This early Model 1885 High Wall Flat/Thick Side rifle was manufactured in 1887 and is chambered for the .45-125 Winchester (.45 Express) cartridge which was the longest cartridge available for the Model 1885 and was designed specifically for this model but only available for a few years given it was not a significant improvement over the .45-90. It has a Beach type combination post/globe/blade front sight, "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A-" on top of the barrel, "3" barrel weight designation just ahead of the forearm, a three leaf rear sight with platinum sight lines, ".45 EX" on top of the barrel at the breech, London proofs on the upper left of the barrel and receiver at the breech and top of the breechblock, plain trigger, script numeral serial numbers on the lower tang, smooth Schnabel tip forearm with contrasting insert, and straight wrist shotgun buttstock with relatively high comb and smooth casehardened buttplate.

Class: Antique

Very fine with 60% plus original blue finish and case colors, light scratches and marks, some minor discoloration, and mottled gray patina on the buttplate. The forearm is very good and has light scratches and dings, minor edge wear, and smooth oiled finish. The buttstock is fine and has some chipping at the front of the wrist, general minor dings and scrapes, a small hole on the left side of the butt, and glossy finish. Mechanically excellent. This is a very solid and attractive example of one of the rarer flat side variations of the Model 1885 series with another bonus of being in an extremely rare caliber.
