HISTORY: The Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle, also known as "Old Reliable," was a popular rifle produced by Sharps Rifle Co. from 1871 to 1880. The rifle was widely used for hunting, particularly of buffalo, and was also favored by target shooters. The Sharps Rifle Company produced slightly less than 6,500 Model 1874s, a relatively small number compared to other popular rifle models. The rifle has a prominent presence in American popular culture, appearing in numerous Western films and inspiring a resurgence of interest in Sharps rifles.
