U.S. Militia Staff Officer's Sword, by Ames, 1840-1860, 32'' etched blade with foliate and Stand at Arms design, cast gold-plated crossguard, which is the same as the prescribed staff and general officer's swords of 1832 in that it is straight double-edged and elliptical in sections. Pommel is the somewhat conventional down-facing helmet. Grips are a single piece of lined carved ivory with decorations. Cross quillions with bud finials, with slender langets and ears. In two-hanger lightly decorated brass scabbard. Condition is about fine with light carbon spotting to blade, and light toning to gold-plated furniture, with minor cracks from shrinkage to grip. Est.: $1,200-$1,800.
