In 1896, Mauser introduced the Mauser C96 Self-loading Pistol chambered in 7.63mm. Known as the "Broomhandle", they were produced until 1937. The Mauser C96’s “Broomhandl...moree” nickname caught on in the English-speaking world, a reference to the gun’s round wooden grip. The most common accessory for the Mauser C96, as well as its most famous, is the pistol’s combination holster stock. These stocks were offered in variations that ranged as widely as the pistol itself, from a simple wooden holster to more elaborate military models that included provisions for a cleaning rod and an extra magazine spring. When not holstering the pistol, these combination stocks could be attached to the Mauser C96 and transform the weapon into a pistol carbine that could be fired from the shoulder. This was a popular option, given that the C96's 7.63x25mm Mauser cartridge was considered the highest velocity commercially manufactured pistol cartridge of its era, a flat-shooting round known for its power and accuracy. Germany’s defeat in WW1 temporarily halted production of the Mauser C96. The Treaty of Versailles placed severe restrictions on German weapons production, and Mauser reworked large numbers of C96s to conform to these new specifications. The C96’s barrel was shortened from 5.5 inches to 4 inches, the grip frame was reduced, and the adjustable rear sight was replaced by a fixed rear sight. This configuration became known as the "Bolo" Mauser. Nearly 130 years later, the Mauser C96 pistol is still one of the most sought-after collector guns around. Carried by Winston Churchill during the Boer Wars and T.E. Lawrence during the Arab Revolt, the Mauser C96 is a gun as legendary as it is unique. The exotic look of the Mauser C96 made it a favorite in the entertainment industry, with author Ian Fleming depicting Mauser pistols as the preferred sidearm of the sinister SMERSH agents in the James Bond series, and the Mauser played a prominent role in Clint Eastwood’s 1972 Western, "Joe Kidd". Today, the C96 can be found on screen in period dramas like Peaky Blinders. This 1920s Mauser C96 "Bolo" is marked: "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER OBERNDORF A. NECKAR" on the right side & on top of the barrel; Mauser Banner on the left side and various German proof marks. Features include a 4" barrel, round wooden "Broomhandle" grips, graduated rear sight and comes with wooden stock holster. The grandson of Mr. Cleveland was only able to offer the following information: "Unfortunately, I do not have much information on my grandfather's wartime service in WWI. He died when I was quite young, and my father, uncle and aunt who might have had information about it have all passed away too. My grandfather (His name was John L. Cleveland) suffered from progressive hearing loss. My father once mentioned that it was due "to all the gunfire he endured during the war" while serving with an artillery unit. He was in France during 1918, and returned to the US in 1919. He was college educated, so I assume he was an officer. That's about all I know."..... The Colt Model 1911 is a single-action, recoil-operated, semi-automatic pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. Designed by John Browning, the Model 1911 Colt Government is the best known of his designs to use the short recoil principle in its basic design. The pistol was widely copied, and this operating system rose to become the pre-eminent type of the 20th century and of nearly all modern centerfire pistols. The pistol served as the standard-issue sidearm for the United States Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985, and is widely regarded by gun historians as the best firearm design to date. Battlefield experience in World War I led to some small external changes to the M1911. Completed in 1924, the new version was called the M1911 A1. An original U.S. Colt 1911 issued during WWI is widely known as the most desirable "Collector/ Investment" firearm of all time. This gun is 100% "Fresh To The Market" and has never been in an Historical Collection. According to Colt Archives, this U.S. Army Model 1911 left the factory in 1918. This gun appears to be all original with a 5.3" barrel, diamond checkered walnut grips, safety grip, lanyard ring with original leather strap, period correct steel magazine, and is correctly marked" "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" "1902" & "1913" Patent Dates "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A" "MODEL OF U.S. ARMY 1911" and U.S. Ordnance proof marked by J.M. Gilbert (The JMG Monogram is found on original Colt 1911s from 1917 to 1918, SN - 230,001 to 302,000). This gun also comes with an original M1912 Cavalry swivel leather holster with leg strap. Holster is marked: Back - "ROCK ISLAND/ ARSENAL/ 1914"; Swivel - "G.K." E.F.M." & Front - "3AER0123". Before World War I, the M1912 Cavalry Swivel Holster was designed for the soon to be adopted Colt 1911 .45. It was produced from 1911-1916, although commercial models were also made well after WWI. The M1912 is identified by its extended hanger and swivel section. The holster was designed for mounted cavalry troops, so that it could still be tied to the leg while bent. This gun has a nice tight action, sharp bore and appears to be in good working order.

Relatively few weapons were used by both Allied and Axis forces in World War II. However, one handgun was virtually unique in that it was used by British and German force...mores who faced each other in combat – the Browning High Power pistol. The version originally sold by Fabrique Nationale Herstal (FN) from 1935 was identified as the “High Power.“ In 1954, the pistol was marketed through the Browning Arms Company (BAC) in the US, a subsidiary of FN. At that point, it became the “Hi-Power” to distinguish it from the High-Power hunting rifle also sold by BAC. The original design work on what would become the High Power pistol was started in the early 1920s in response to a French military requirement for a Grande Puissance (High Power) sidearm. This didn’t refer to the shooting power of the pistol, but to a requirement for a magazine which held at least ten rounds of 9mm ammunition – more than any contemporary semi-automatic service pistol. In response to the French requirement and on behalf of FN, John Browning produced and designed this full-size military sidearm with a locked-breech recoil system and a double column, sixteen-round magazine. By the early 1930s, he had produced a revised design for a single-action pistol with a double-stack magazine holding up to thirteen 9mm Parabellum rounds and featuring a complex trigger mechanism which extended up into the area of the slide in an attempt to keep the grip as slim as possible. The design was completed in 1935 and FN released it as the FN Model 1935. Around 35,000 High Power pistols were manufactured in Belgium up to 1939 and were largely used by Britain/ France, although Belgium was officially neutral in WWII. On May 10th, 1940, German forces invaded Belgium and the FN plant was captured virtually intact. At this time, FN Herstal continued to build guns for the Allied forces by moving their production line to a John Inglis and Company plant in Canada. In Belgium, the Nazis installed managers and technicians from Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) at FN Herstal, and used this as a production facility for ammunition and weapons, including the High Power pistol, re-designated the “Pistole 640(b)". Detailed records are very difficult to find, but it seems that the German 640(b) "High Power" was not issued to troops in the Wehrmacht (German Army), though it was provided to units of the Waffen-SS, the Brandenburg special forces battalion, and to combat units of the Luftwaffe including Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers). German adoption of the High Power was partly down to the fact that this pistol used the same cartridge as the two other main German service pistols of the period: the Luger and the Walther P-38. This Belgium FN Browning High Power (640b) is Nazi marked and features a 4.64" barrel, checkered walnut grips, serrated slide, round serrated hammer, dovetailed rear sight and 13-round magazine. This gun is in good condition with light wear, has a sharp/ clean bore and appears to be in good working order. (A. Rex Winn Estate)
