Exceptionally Fine Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 926)

Exceptionally Fine Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket

This is an exceptional example of a Winchester Model 1866 Musket that was manufactured in 1869. The musket has the distinctive 27-inch barrel with 24-inch magazine, extended 17-inch forearm and three barrel bands. Sling swivels are mounted on the stock and upper barrel band. The barrel has an iron, block, front sight which serves as a mount for a socket bayonet and a two-leaf folding rear sight with apertures marked "1" ,"3", and "5". The stock has a brass, carbine style, buttplate with sliding brass trapdoor. The stock and extended forearm are straight grain American walnut. The barrel and magazine are blued and the barrel bands, hammer and loading lever are color casehardened. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT/KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860.", between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The serial number, "32110 B" is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The musket is all original and retains 50% plus of the slightly faded original blue finish. The blue on the barrel is thin and shows some small spots of age discoloration. 40% of the blue finish is present on the loading gate. The three barrel bands and the sling swivels have a dark patina. Half of the case colors are present on the hammer; the case colors on the lever have faded to a silver-gray patina. The brass receiver is in very fine condition. The side plate joints are tight and free from scratches and the remainder of the receiver is smooth with minimal handling wear. The receiver has a mellow, untouched, age patina. The brass buttplate shows slightly more wear than the receiver but has the same untouched patina. The stock and extended forearm are in very fine overall condition with a few light handling and storage marks. This is a very good, original, example of a Winchester 3rd Model 1866 Musket.

The case colors on the crescent buttplate show slightly more wear than the receiver but remain at least 85%. The extra finish stock and forearm are both in fine condition and retain much of the high polish piano finish. The forearm finish shows moderate handling wear while the stock has nearly all of the finish intact. Both the stock and forearm have scattered, minor dents and handling marks. This is an attractive Winchester Model 1873 rifle with very desirable casehardened receiver.

Attractive Nimschke Style Engraved Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 20 (Sale Order: 20 of 926)

Attractive Nimschke Style Engraved Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured c. 1882 and subsequently custom engraved as a copy most likely in the mid-late 20th century in the style of Louis D. Nimschke and marked "L.D.N.". The left side plate is engraved: "MANUEL CASSOLA" on a ribbon surrounded by scrollwork. The right side plate and the sides, top and bottom of the receiver, dust cover and forearm cap are engraved with Nimschke's American style scrollwork on a fine punch-dot background. A copy of Nimschke's "L.D.N" signature is engraved in a ribbon surrounded by scrollwork on the bottom of the receiver behind the cartridge elevator. The rifle barrel and magazine are blued, the forearm cap, receiver, dust cover and crescent buttplate are silver-plated, and the hammer, lever and trigger are color casehardened. The loading gate is niter blue. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grain, walnut with a high polish piano finish. There are fine checkered panels on the forearm and stock wrist. The rifle has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The full octagon barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel silver blade and buckhorn sporting style rear sight. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1865. OCTOBER 16, 1860" ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL. 1873-" in fancy letters with foliate devices on either end of the marking. The serial number, "139990", is stamped in script on the lower tang behind the lever latch in an engraved panel.

Class: Antique

Very fine as embellished. The rifle retains nearly 95% of the original blue finish on the barrel and magazine with a few very minor scratches and some high point wear. The forearm cap, receiver, dust cover and buttplate have 90% of the custom applied silver-plated finish with some tarnish and edge wear. The loading gate retains nearly all of the nitre blue finish, and at least 60% of the subdued case colors are present on the hammer, trigger and lever. The intricate and flawlessly executed scroll engraving is crisp and deep. The barrel and receiver markings are sharp. The stock and forearm have been professionally refinished and appear nearly mint with sharp recut checkering.

A "B" factory inspection mark is stamped between the serial number and the tang screw. "S" and "XX" is stamped on the left lower tang internally.

Very good plus. The rifle barrel and magazine have a gray-brown patina with traces of the original blue finish in protected areas. The surfaces of the barrel are generally smooth with some minor patches of surface rust and several insignificant scratches. The barrel markings are clear. The brass receiver has a mellow patina and retains traces of the silver plated finish in protected areas. The cartridge elevator retains 40% of the silver plating. The side plate joints are perfect. The engraving is crisp and deep. The buttplate retains 50% of the original silver-plated finish. Most of the original case colors are present on the hammer; the loading lever has a gray-brown patina with minor spots of surface rust. Traces of niter blue finish are visible on the loading gate. The stock and forearm are in very fine overall condition with moderate handling wear. There are scattered minor scratches on the stock and forearm with a moderate dent on the left side of the stock wrist between the receiver tang and the comb. The stock retains 75% of the high-polish piano finish. This is an original example of a Winchester Model 1866 Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with factory engraving and a silver-plated finish.

Lot # 24 (Sale Order: 24 of 926)

Desirable Documented Antique Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle with Cody Record

This is an early example of one of the most popular rifles in history and is in its most iconic configuration: a Winchester Model 1894 rifle in .30-30 Winchester Centerfire. More deer have been taken with .30-30 '94s than any other rifle in American history. The included records sheet from the Cody Firearms Museum states that this rifle was marked with its serial number on November 17, 1896. It was received in the Winchester warehouse on New Year's Eve as a rifle in .30 caliber with a round barrel and plain trigger and then shipped as part of order number 1122 on January 4, 1897. It has a German silver blade front sight, notch rear sight with folding leaves (100, 200, and 300 yards), standard markings, and smooth stock and forearm with standard rifle buttplate and forend cap.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle retains 60% of the original blue finish and has strong and vibrant case colors on the lever and more subdued case colors on the hammer. The faded areas have primarily brown and gray patina, and there is some light oxidation and a few spots of mild pitting. The wood is fine and has mostly smooth surfaces and some light scratches and pressure marks. The action functions fine, and the markings are crisp.
