Scarce Early Winchester "Open Top" Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3000 (Sale Order: 1 of 832)

Scarce Early Winchester "Open Top" Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle

This is a fine example of a scarce early "open top" Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action that was manufactured early 1878. This has the scarce first model receiver "without" any provisions for the dust cover, thus giving with the name open top. Dust covers started to appear around serial number 1600, usually only on special order by the customer and by serial number 3200 they were a regular feature on the rifle. With this late of a serial number, this was probably a special order that requested it "not" be fitted with the dust cover. The reason for this is that in the 1876 model the cartridge heads were not recessed into the rear of the barrel. So with this early large caliber ammunition, if the case burst (which did happen often) with the dust cover closed it would blow out or bulged the side plates vs. venting out the top. The top barrel flat is marked with the Winchester, two line address/King's Improvement patent dates of March 1866 and Oct. 1860. the top of the barrel (in front of the receiver) nor the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator are marked with any cartridge markings, however a 45-70 cartridge will "not fit" so it probably chambered for the "45-60 WCF" cartridge. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1876" and the serial number (4854) is marked on the lower tang. The 28 inch octagon barrel is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and standard sporting rear sight. It is fitted with a standard walnut straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with butt-trap compartment and standard walnut forearm. The butt trap does not contain any cleaning rod. It has an all blue finish with color casehardened hammer, lever, forend cap and buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine condition overall with 40% plus of the original blue still remaining overall. The left side of the barrel, magazine tube, top flat of the barrel and the side plates showing minor light erosion/pitting. Typically you see this type of wear from sitting in a saddle scabbard. The stock and forearm are both in good plus condition with a nice tight original fit of the wood to metal, with both showing minor scratches and light pressure dents overall from use and handling over the years. The lower toe area does show more wear. The action hand cycles correctly and the hammer holds in cocking position, however the finger lever spring is a little weak as the lever hangs down. A nice, honest early Winchester Model 1876 with the rare "Open Top" action.

Scarce Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Set Trigger, 30 Inch Barrel, and

Lot # 3001 (Sale Order: 2 of 832)

Scarce Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Set Trigger, 30 Inch Barrel, and Factory Letter

The included factory letter states that it was received in the warehouse on November 14, 1879, and shipped the following day as part of order 18,094 with a 30 inch octagon barrel, set trigger, casehardened receiver, fancy stock, and sling swivel. Special order Model 1873s are known with barrels up to 37 inches, but standard rifles were shipped with 24 inch barrels. Special order barrel lengths are rare. It also features a special order single set trigger and has sling swivels mounted on the bottom of the forend cap and buttstock. Additional features included a blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, casehardened receiver, Second Model screw fastened guide rail and dust cover with serrated tail. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XX 328" indicating it has fancy grade wood, and the upper tang stock inlet and toe of the buttplate have corresponding "328" assembly number stamps. The barrel is marked with the two line address and King's improvement marking ahead of the rear sight. The upper tang is marked with the model designation in fancy script, and the lower tang has the serial number in script numerals behind the lever latch. There are no caliber markings because the .44-40 was the standard cartridge and only one offered until 1880 when the .38-40 was first listed in the Winchester catalogue.

Class: Antique

Very good. There are patches of original finish in the protected areas. Otherwise, the barrel and magazine tube display primarily brown patina, and the action displays a blend of silver-gray and brown patina. There is some light spotting. The wood is fine and has a few scrapes and marks. The front sight bead is absent. The action functions excellently and the markings are crisp. This is a very good example of a scarce Special Order Second Model 1873 rifle with extra long barrel, XX grade stock, casehardened receiver, swivels and single set trigger.

Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .22 Short with Factory Letter

Lot # 3005 (Sale Order: 6 of 832)

Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .22 Short with Factory Letter

The .22 caliber variant of the famous Winchester Model 1873 was the first in a long line of American made .22 caliber repeating rifles. Despite the later popularity of .22 rifles for target shooting and small game hunting, less than 20,000 Model 1873 rifles were made in .22 caliber. The included factory letter indicates this example was received in the warehouse on July 19, 1892 and shipped the following day as order number 2094. The letter also confirms the configuration. It has a German silver blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, standard Winchester markings including "22 CAL SHORT" on the elevator, and a smooth stock and forearm.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle retains 40% plus of the original blue remaining overall with the balance a crisp dark brown patina. There is some gray patina on the high edges and magazine tube. There has been some modification on the magazine retaining band and the magazine does not currently lock up fully. The wood is also fine and has some small dings and light scratches. The buttstock retains more of the oiled finish and has a darker tone. The action needs work. The markings are crisp.

The caliber, "45-70" is roll-stamped on the left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. Oval Winchester "W/P" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver. The lower tang is roll-stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the serial number "149488" is stamped behind the rear tang screw.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent. This rifle is all original and retains 97% of the bright original blue finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine. The forearm cap has some minor scuff marks but retains more than 90% of the finish. The blue on the forward underside of the receiver has thinned slightly from handling. Nearly all of the blue is present on the bolt, loading gate and trigger. The heel of the buttplate shows some very minor edge wear but retains at least 95% of the original blue finish. The hammer and lever have 75% of the original muted case colors intact. The fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are both in excellent condition and retain nearly all of the high polish piano finish. The finish on the underside of the forearm between the checkered panel and the receiver has a several minor chips and scratches. The stock has some light handling wear on the wrist and a few very insignificant handling and storage marks. The checkering on the forearm and pistol grip remains sharp. The markings on the barrel and receiver are perfect. This is a choice example of a Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Lever Action Rifle.

Rare Civil War Production New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 8 of 832)

Rare Civil War Production New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry Lever Action Rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in March 1864. The rifle has the distinctive Henry "gun metal" brass receiver and buttplate and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel has the late style, square back, nickel-silver front sight blade and a dovetail mounted, folding leaf rear sight. The sight leaf has a rounded top with 900 yard center notch. The second style receiver lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail found on Henry receivers to about serial number 3000. The bottom of the receiver has the late, beveled magazine follower cut and the magazine has the large diameter brass follower. The buttplate is the first style with rounded heel which was replaced with a buttplate with sharp pointed heel in the mid-4000 serial number range. The buttplate has a hinged brass trapdoor. The left side of the stock and barrel have a factory sling swivel and screw mounted loop for a sling hook. The swivel and hook were originally special order features but were standard by early 1864. The barrel/magazine has traces of the blue finish, the hammer and lever are color casehardened and the straight grain American walnut stock has a varnished or oiled finish. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the second style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16, 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN, CT." in two lines. The second style legend, introduced in the late 3000 serial number range is larger and has all Roman (serifed) characters rather than the smaller, first style legend with the combination of Roman and Gothic letters. The serial number "4585" is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the lower left side of the receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, (4) on the inside of the buttplate and (5) on the shanks of both hand-fitted buttplate screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. The tang screws are, correctly, not serial numbered. Experts believe that most Henry rifles made before 1865 were privately purchased by individual federal soldiers who wanted the unprecedented firepower offered by the 15-shot Henry repeating rifle. The Henry rifle was especially popular with soldiers in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky regiments. Many of these soldiers purchased Henry rifles from dealers in Louisville, Kentucky and other mid-west cities in 1864 using re-enlistment bounties.

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel has a deep brown patina with sharp edges, and clear markings. The rear sight is original but is missing the elevator bar. The receiver and buttplate are in good overall condition with an attractive patina. The receiver and buttplate have typical scratches and handling marks. Most of the wear is concentrated on the bottom of the receiver and lower tang. The side plate joints are tight with a few minor dents along the top of the left side plate. The hammer, trigger and lever have a dark brown patina with slight surface texture and pitting. The stock is in good overall condition with scattered, minor handling marks. The bolt has been gunsmith modified to centerfire configuration. This is a very good example of a Civil War production Henry rifle that may have seen Civil War service.

Lot # 3008 (Sale Order: 9 of 832)

Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .50/110 Express with Factory Letter

This is a very nice example of a Winchester Model 1886 Rifle manufactured in 1896. The rifle has a casehardened frame, forearm cap, hammer, lever and buttplate, with blue finish on the remaining metal parts. The barrel is equipped with dovetailed blade front and three leaf rear sights. The top of the barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight and "50 EX" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-", and the lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates in two lines behind the trigger with the serial number between the tang screws. 1/2 magazine tube and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. There are sling swivel eyes mounted on the forend cap and stock. The accompanying factory letters verify the rifle configuration, 50/110 caliber, round barrel, 1/2 magazine (4 cartridge), plain trigger, that it was received in the warehouse on March 24, 1896, and shipped from the warehouse with one other arm on April 13, 1896, to order number 7973.

Class: Antique

Fine overall. The barrel and magazine tube retain 85% plus original blue finish with some thinning on the muzzle end, some minor muzzle wear and a few minor dings on the barrel. 95% original blue finish remains on the bolt, which shows some minor spotting. There are traces of a protective coat of varnish on the barrel and magazine tube. The receiver retains 30% original vivid case colors with a smooth mottled gray patina on the balance. Most of the dark original case colors remain on the hammer and there are strong original case colors on the sides of the lever, and a smooth gray patina on the balance. The wood is very good as having been coated with protective varnish some time ago, showing a number of small pressure dents on the underside of the stock between the toe and the sling swivel eye, and overall some minor dings and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.

Lot # 3009 (Sale Order: 10 of 832)

Special Order Extra Length Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with Desirable Casehardened Receiver with Factory Letter

This is a fine example of a special order Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1888. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Records office letter that describes the features as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 32, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Length: 28 inches, Trigger: set", and "Casehardened". The letter states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on November 30, 1888. The receiver has the "step" at the front found on .22, .32 and .38 caliber rifles. The barrel has a "Rocky Mountain" front sight with nickel silver blade and a buckhorn, sporting style rear sight with serrated edges and a screw-adjustable center piece. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The barrel, magazine, dust cover, loading gate and trigger are blued, and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever, and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "32 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "32 CAL" is stamped in script letter across the brass cartridge elevator. The upper tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1873-" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number, "275654B", is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. Later production Winchester Model 1873 rifles with special order casehardened finishes are scarce.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle is all original and retains 40% of the blue and color casehardened finish. Most of the blue finish is present on the barrel with some light edge wear and scattered spots of age discoloration. The blue finish on the magazine tube has faded to a blue-gray patina. The dust cover and loading gate have about half of the nitre blue finish and significant amounts of blue remain on the trigger. There is light pitting on the upper edges of both side plates and along the upper edges of the receiver. The hammer and protected areas of the receiver and lever have strong case colors. The Winchester legend, caliber markings and model designation are sharp. The fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are in fine overall condition with a few light handling marks. The stock retains half of the original piano finish. The forearm shows more finish wear. This is an attractive example of a scarce special order Winchester Model 1873 rifle with very desirable color casehardened receiver and extra length barrel.

Extremely Rare Documented Winchester Model 1876 "One of One Thousand" Lever Action Rifle with Winche

Lot # 3011 (Sale Order: 12 of 832)

Extremely Rare Documented Winchester Model 1876 "One of One Thousand" Lever Action Rifle with Winchester Museum Letter

This is an outstanding example of a highly desirable Winchester "One of One Thousand" Model 1876 rifle that was manufactured in 1880. (This rifle is fresh to market and was discovered in Australia!) This rifle is one of only 51 "One of One Thousand" rifles manufactured in the Model 1876 series. Winchester manufactured more than twice as many (136) Model 1873 "One of One Thousand" rifles. This rifle is accompanied by a 1966 dated Winchester Gun Museum letter that states: "The Winchester serial number records list number 10015 as a rifle, 26" octagon barrel, casehardened, checked stock, pistol grip, set trigger, caliber 45-60, Marked "1 of 1000". It was shipped from the factory on June 8, 1880". In "THE WINCHESTER BOOK", author George Madis notes Winchester manufactured a series of seven "One of One Thousand" Model 1876 rifles with the consecutive serial numbers 10013-10018. All of these rifles were shipped from the factory on June 8, 1880. This rifle has "One of One Thousand" engraved in script letters on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver with a scrollwork flourish at the muzzle end and scrollwork on a punch-dot background on the lower barrel flats below the marking and at the muzzle. Silver bands are inlaid on the barrel immediately ahead of the receiver and at the muzzle. The full octagon barrel and full-length magazine are blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and trigger are color casehardened. The receiver has a screw-fastened dust cover rail, blued dust cover with oval 'thumb print' and factory single set-trigger. The barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and standard, folding leaf rear sight marked "1876" below the stop screw. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grade, walnut with high polish piano finish with fine checkered panels and the bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony or horn inlay. The stock is fitted with a black, hard rubber shotgun buttplate. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines followed by: "CAL. 45-60" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation, "45-60" is stamped in script across the bottom of the cartridge elevator. "MODEL 1876." is roll-stamped on the upper tang in fancy letters. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XXXX" and "822" which designates high quality fancy walnut (4X) and an assembly number which is not on the stock as it is unmarked. The serial number, "10015" is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. The legendary "One of One Thousand" Model 1876 and Model 1873 rifles are among the most celebrated and desirable of all American firearms. This Winchester Model 1876 "One of One Thousand" rifle would be the centerpiece of the finest collection of Winchester firearms.

Class: Antique

Fine. This rifle is all original and retains 30% of the original blue and traces of the original color casehardened finish. Much of the original finish on the barrel, magazine, receiver and other components has aged to dark gray-brown patina with scattered surface discoloration. The correct replacement nitre blued loading gate retains 30 original finish. Most of the dark patina is the result of storage wear; the rifle shows only light handling wear. The engraving, barrel and receiver marks are crisp. The fine original stock and forearm retain 75% of the high polish piano finish. Wear is limited to a few scattered and relatively minor handling marks and the horn buttplate which is a smooth, expertly made period replacement, that fits perfectly in the place of the original. The original checkering on the stock and forearm shows some wear but remains sharp. This is a fine, original, example of an extremely rare and highly desirable Winchester Model 1876 "One of One Thousand Rifle".

Documented Special Order Early First Model Raised Thumbprint Dusto Cover Winchester Model 1873 Lever

Lot # 3012 (Sale Order: 13 of 832)

Documented Special Order Early First Model Raised Thumbprint Dusto Cover Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The included factory letter confirms that this rifle was received in the warehouse and shipped on August 20, 1874, as part of order number 1859 as a rifle with a 24 inch barrel and set trigger. A second letter from the Cody Firearms Museum in 2009 notes that the factory records also confirm the round barrel. It has a German silver blade front sight, the standard two-line address and King's improvement marking on the top of the barrel, an adjustable sporting rear sight with two notch options (later style replacement), and single set trigger. The rifle has the desirable early First Model mortised dust cover guide rails, a dust cover with attached oval thumb rest, and two screws on the action above the trigger. The stock and forearm are standard grade walnut and are fitted with a steel forend cap and buttplate with brass trapdoor. The early four digit serial number is marked on the lower tang behind the early thumb screw used to secure the lever, and the upper tang has the model designation in fancy script. The left side of the lower tang is marked with the assembly markings "A" and "16," and the upper tang inlet on the stock and toe of the buttplate on the inside are marked with the matching assembly number. There are no caliber markings since this rifle is in .44-40 and additional calibers were not introduced to the Model 1873 line for several more years. The document binder also contains consignor statements and research concerning the rifle's past. (We are reporting what is contained, but offer no opinion or guarantee!) They state the rifle was likely used by a Native American warrior during the Battle of Little Bighorn based on the serial number only slightly predating an identified Model 1873 (sn# 1958) that was displayed at the Rock Island Arsenal Museum. One document speculates that the gash on the right side of the forearm may have been from an arrow during the battle. The Cody Firearms Museum letter noted above also states the museum rifle was part of order 1855. The arsenal museum listed the rifle as having been used at the Battle of Little Bighorn and at the Reno-Benteen defense site based on battlefield analysis. Other documents state the rifle was purchased from "Old Bob Cochran" in Manhattan, Illinois, who had the rifle for 45 years in his hardware store. He could not be convinced to part ways with the rifle but said, "it killed Indians." The rifle was purchased after Cochran died from his son. The buyer then had the rifle for 55 years before now offering it at auction. Just eight Winchester Model 1873s are believed to have been used at the Battle of Little Bighorn based on forensic analysis of cartridge cases found at the site. Those cases were collected from identified Native American firing positions. Most of the repeaters carried by the warriors were Henrys, Winchester Model 1866, and Spencers. There are no historical records indicating any of the cavalrymen carried personally owned Winchesters, but a white scout and a black interpreter, both killed in the battle, are known to have had Henry rifles. Additional scouts may have had other repeaters, but the main body of the Americans were armed with Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor carbines and rifles and Colt Single Action Army revolvers. Most of the slain cavalrymen's weapons were captured during the battle and were used for many years. Some were even used in later stages of the battle against the remaining cavalrymen during their last stands. Most Native American weapons are found in very rough condition from years of hard use and exposure to the elements on the frontier.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle retains 70% plus of the bright original blue finish and has a blend of gray and brown patina on the balance. There are patches of light oxidation and faint pitting. The stock and forearm are also fine and retain strong original varnish. There is a cut on the right side of the forearm, as noted above, some additional chips and scrapes on the left side of the forearm, and various minor marks and scratches from use and storage. The action functions very well, and the markings and checkering on the thumb rest are crisp. This is a very desirable early First variation Winchester Model 1873 rifle with desirable raised thumbprint dust cover.

Historic and Excellent Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine with Documentation

Lot # 3015 (Sale Order: 16 of 832)

Historic and Excellent Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine with Documentation

Winchester Model 1892 carbine manufactured in 1897 per Winchester's serial number records and "The Winchester Book" by Madis. A 1980 dated letter from J.S. Wilkinson of Prescott, Arizona, that accompanies the carbine states that this carbine was from a group of several cases of "Winchester rifles" purchased from the U.S. Customs Service at Nogales, Arizona, c. 1950 by author Roy Dunlap. The carbines had apparently been seized by the Customs Service "25 or 30 years" before they were purchased by Dunlap. The author of the letter states that the "rifles" were new in the original packing cases and that he purchased several of the "rifles" but retained this carbine in "unfired" condition. The letter states that Wilkinson "presumes that the rifles were on their way to Mexico, perhaps to Pancho Villa or some other revolutionary" when they were seized by U.S. Customs. The carbine has a blued barrel, magazine, barrel bands, receiver, and buttplate. The hammer and lever have a casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The carbine has a block front sight located behind the upper barrel band and a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 900 yards. A staple-mounted saddle-ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "44 W.F.C." is roll-stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1892./ -WINCHESTER-/ PAT. OCT 14. 1884" in three lines. The serial number, "144967" is roll-stamped across the front edge of the receiver bottom.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The carbine is all original and shows only light storage and handling wear. The barrel and magazine retain nearly 98% of the original blue finish. There is light finish loss on the sides of both barrel bands. The receiver, bolt, and loading gate have more than 90% of the original blue finish; there is some thinning on the top and sides of the receiver and some edge wear on the high points. The ejector has all of the fire blue finish intact. The upper tang shows handling wear and the blue finish has faded to a gray-brown patina. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the buttplate. The hammer and lever retain nearly all of the subdued case colors. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition and retain nearly all of the original finish; wear is limited to a few scattered and very minor handling and storage marks. The action functions perfectly. This is an excellent example of a early production Winchester Model 1892 Carbine with interesting documentation.

Extraordinary Early Production Antique Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action .38-55 Caliber Rifle with Factory Letter

This is an extraordinary example (quite possibly the finest!) of a Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action .38-55 caliber Rifle that was manufactured in 1896. The rifle is accompanied by a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum. The Cody letter describes the rifle features as: "Caliber;38/55, Barrel type: Octagon" and "Trigger: Plain" and states that it was shipped from Winchester on February 20, 1897. The rifle has a full octagon barrel with full length magazine. The barrel has a Lyman "Semi-Jack" front sight with colored bead and a buckhorn, sporting style rear sight with screw-adjustable center insert. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and bolt. The loading gate is niter blue. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "The caliber, "38-55" is stamped on the top barrel flat ahead of the receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped with the first style marking: "MODEL 1894./-WINCHESTER-/PAT. AUG. 21. 1894" in three lines. The serial number, "16237", is stamped across the bottom of the receiver ahead of the lever.

Class: Antique

Extraordinary, near new. The rifle retains 99% plus of the bright original high polish blue and vivid color casehardened finish with the very slightest storage marks. The loading gate and extractor have almost all of the nitre blue finish. The barrel and receiver markings are perfect. The stock and forearm are in near new condition and retain all of the original finish. Wear is limited to two shallow bruises on the left side of the forearm and several very minor handling marks. It would be extremely difficult to find a better example of an early production antique Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle, and we believe this to be the finest example extant!

Deluxe, Factory Engraved, Silver-Plated Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3022 (Sale Order: 23 of 832)

Deluxe, Factory Engraved, Silver-Plated Henry Lever Action Rifle

Late production Henry Lever-Action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1866. The rifle is factory engraved with large, open scroll work on a punch dot background on the front panels, right side-plate, upper tang, top of the receiver and heel of the silver plated buttplate.. The left side plate has a simple game scene that consists of a doe leaping a fence flanked by two smaller scrolls. The engraving on the side plates and front receiver panels has a line and scallop border. The engraving on this rifle is nearly identical to the engraving on Henry serial no. 12173 illustrated on page 26 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. The style of engraving on this rifle is less common than the typical Henry engraving which features a large flower petal design on the front panels. The engraving on this rifle was probably executed by Samuel J. Hoggson who was the factory engraver for the New Haven Arms Company. In addition to the silver plated receiver and buttplate, the rifle has a nicely figured walnut stock with a high polish piano finish. The barrel and 15-shot integral magazine are blued and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The rifle has the late production features which include: (1) square-back, nickel-silver front sight blade, (2) dovetail mounted, folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch and elevation bar stop screw at the top of the leaf, (3) large diameter magazine follower and beveled follower cut in the lower receiver, (4) 'Type II' receiver which lacks the alternate rear sight dove tail found on Henry rifles thru approximately serial number 3000, (5) screw-mounted sling hook loop on the left side of the barrel and sling swivel on the left side of the stock, (6) second style buttplate with sharp pointed heel and (7) four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT., in two lines. The second style legend is slightly larger than the legend used thru about serial number 3500 and has all Roman (serif) letters. The serial number, "12352" is located on: (1) the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) the lower left side of the receiver tang beneath the stock, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. The late style buttplate and tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. All of the visible serial numbers match. "F" is stamped on the left side of the upper tang beneath the stock and "26" is stamped in front of the serial number on the lower left side of the tang. The significance of these markings is unknown. Silver plating and factory engraving added $10.00 to the $42.00 base price of a Henry rifle. Factory engraved, silver-plated Henry rifles are scarce.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle retains 25% of the blue finish overall. The receiver and buttplate retain 80% or more of the silver plated finish with light-moderate high point wear and some tarnishing. The factory engraving remains crisp and deep. The receiver has some scattered, minor dents and scratches with good side plate joints. The barrel has a smooth, plum colored patina and retains considerable amounts of the original blue finish in the groove between the barrel and magazine, The barrel legend is sharp. The case colors on the hammer and lever have faded to a smooth gray patina. The nicely figured walnut stock is in very fine overall condition and retains much of the high polish piano finish. This is a fine example of a scarce deluxe, factory engraved, silver-plated Henry lever action rifle.

Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Lot # 3023 (Sale Order: 24 of 832)

Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The factory letter confirms this rifle was received in the warehouse on June 15, 1888, and shipped the following day as part of order number 7,525 in .44 caliber with a round barrel, 1/2 magazine, and plain trigger. It has a Rocky Mountain style blade front sight, notch rear sight with attached peep panel, empty taps in the upper tang for folding peep sight, standard markings including the caliber on the barrel at the breech and on the elevator. The rifle is also equipped with a special order style button magazine that is original to the barrel based on the lack of a dovetail for the magazine retainer used on rifles with longer length magazine tubes. The lower tang and stock inlet have no assembly or wood grade markings indicating the rifle was restocked with the current fancy grade checkered stock and forearm. The lower tang is also blued whereas the receiver is casehardened.

Class: Antique

Very good as assembled (see above). The barrel retains 75% or more of the lightly thinned original blue finish, and the receiver has faint case colors and a silver-gray patina with mottled brown patina forming. The lower tang retains light blue finish mixed with areas of gray and brown patina. The refinished, recheckered wood is very good and has crisp checkering, attractive figure, and minor handling and storage marks. The action functions fine, and the markings are crisp.
