Excellent Documented Antique Winchester Model 1894 Deluxe Extra Light Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The exceptional Deluxe Winchester Model 1894 lever action rifle is documented by a Cody Firearms Museum letter. The letter states that this 1897 manufactured Model 1894 rifle was shipped late from the Winchester warehouse on April 13, 1901, and describes the rifle features as: 24 inch round barrel, "Plain trigger, Checkered stock with pistol grip, 1/2 magazine, Shotgun butt with rubber butt plate, Oil Finish, Takedown" and "Extra Light". The rifle has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, half-magazine, forearm cap and receiver. The hammer and lever are casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, fancy grain walnut with "Style H" checkering. The stock has a black, hard rubber, checkered buttplate with the embossed Winchester logo in the center, and the pistol grip has a black, hard rubber, cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The barrel has a No. 21 Sporting Front Sight with nickel silver blade and a special order "Winchester Express" rear sight. The rear sight has three short yardage leaves graduated at 50, 100 and 200 yards with platinum sight lines. A Lyman folding peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The "30 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel just in front of the receiver. The serial number "100406" is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The rifle retains 95% plus of the original blue finish overall. Finish wear is limited to some thinning on the edges of the forearm cap and some slight edge wear on receiver high points. The barrel markings are crisp. The checkering on the stock and forearm is sharp. The stock and forearm retain nearly all of the original factory documented oil finish with a small chip on the toe of the buttplate. Wear is limited to a few scattered and very minor handling or storage marks. Mechanically excellent. This is an excellent example of a scarce Winchester Model 1894 Deluxe Extra Light Takedown rifle.

Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Semi-Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Lot # 3001 (Sale Order: 2 of 856)

Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Semi-Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The factory letter indicates this rifle was received in the warehouse and shipped on September 28, 1900, as part of order number 72098. The letter confirms the configuration including the caliber, part octagon barrel, button magazine, plain trigger, and smooth pistol grip stock with shotgun buttplate. This is an interesting special order gun in that it was likely ordered to fit the preferences of a sportsman and thus has plain features such as the smooth stock, standard German silver front and adjustable sporting rear sights, and standard trigger. Guns like these were far more likely to have been destroyed over the years and thus fine examples are very hard to find. The barrel has the standard two-line address and King's patent marking ahead of the front sight and "38 W.C.F." at the breech. It is correctly not marked with the "WP" proofs. The upper tang has "MODEL 1873" in fancy script between two foliate devices, and the elevator has "38 CAL." The stock has a "WINCHESTER REPEATING/ARMS CO" embossed hard rubber grip cap, and the buttplate is smooth steel.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very good. The rifle has traces of original finish in the protected areas and otherwise displays brown patina and has some slight surface pitting. The wood is also very good and has some minor scrapes and marks from use and storage. The action functions fine, and the markings are crisp. This is a desirable example of a special order semi-deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle.

OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "44 W.C.F" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The script marking "44 CAL" is stamped across the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number, "295106B" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel and magazine retain 60% of the original blue finish with some thinning on the left side of the barrel and magazine. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are crisp. The dust cover retains about 50% of the fire blue finish and 70% of the original nitre blue finish remains on the loading gate. The sides of the receiver have 60% case colors with some age frosting. The case colors on the contact points on the top and bottom of the receiver and bottom of the have faded to a gray-brown patina. Most of the casehardened finish is present on the forearm cap, hammer and the sides of the loading lever. The case colors on the buttplate have aged to a mottled gray-brown patina. The stock and forearm both remain in fine overall condition with more than half of the original finish. Most of the finish wear is concentrated on the sides and bottom of the forearm and the stock wrist. The stock and forearm have a few, very minor, handling marks. This is a very good example of a Third Model Winchester 1873 Sporting rifle with very desirable color casehardened receiver and rare 62B Tang sight.

Rare and Significant Second Model Smith-Jennings Percussion Repeating Rifle

Lot # 3009 (Sale Order: 10 of 856)

Rare and Significant Second Model Smith-Jennings Percussion Repeating Rifle

This was Horace Smith's (later Smith & Wesson) improvement on the Jennings "Rocket Ball" rifle manufactured circa 1851-52. He was issued a patent in 1851 for an improved action and the repeating rifle was manufactured by Robbins & Lawrence. This particular rifle is a Second Model with the pronounced bulge on the underside of the frame resulting in the nickname "pregnant frame Jennings". It is estimated that less than 400 of this model were manufactured. Also the pill primer and cartridge carrier position spring were improved over the First Model. The left side of the receiver is marked "PATENT 1849/C.P. DIXON AGENT/NEW YORK" and has light engraving on the receiver and buttplate tang. A magazine tube is positioned under the barrel. Small blade front and fixed iron rear sights. The top of the barrel is marked "3B" at the breech. It has the simple swinging loading gate configuration, ring trigger and mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with an engraved silver oval inset on the right side. The Jennings and the Smith-Jennings rifles are important in the evolution of Winchester having brought together the talents of B. Tyler Henry (who later played a major role in the development of the rifle and ammunition for Volcanic, New Haven and Winchester Arms companies), Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson, (later Smith & Wesson) whose efforts ultimately led to historic developments in the lever action repeating firearms. The Jennings and Smith-Jennings rifles have only recently been properly classified by a detailed study in "Evolution of Winchester" by R.B. McDowell.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle has a dark brown mottled patina with the frame retaining nearly 40% bright original blue finish and the buttplate retaining traces of original blue finish. The stock is also fine with a couple of minor cracks and some minor pressure dents and scratches. The barrel is loose. Action cycles fine. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.

Scarce and Desirable Smith & Wesson Small Frame "Volcanic" No. 1 Repeating Pistol

Lot # 3010 (Sale Order: 11 of 856)

Scarce and Desirable Smith & Wesson Small Frame "Volcanic" No. 1 Repeating Pistol

Only an estimated 1,200 No. 1 pistol were manufactured by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1854 and 1855. These pistols, along with the less than 500 larger No. 2 pistols, represent an important step in the evolution of lever action firearms. This design was latter manufactured in slightly altered for by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and New Haven Arms Company before being the basis of the famous Henry rifle which was ultimately refined by Winchester to become the legendary Winchester Model 1866. There is a small post front sight at the front of the barrel and a notch rear sight ahead of the hammer. The upper left of the barrel is stamped "CAST-STEEL", and the top of the barrel near the breech has SMITH & WESSON/NORWICH. CT." The left flat has the "PATENT/FEB. 14. 1854" marking, and the receiver has the standard Rococo style acanthus and floral engraving patterns. The grips are dark rosewood and are numbered "46." The left side of the grip frame and lever are marked with the matching serial number "C46." The side plates do not appear to have been removed from the gun and thus were not removed for inspection.

Class: Antique

Very good. Other than some rich case colors on the hammer, the pistol displays an even gray patina and has a few small spots of minor pitting. The slightly undersize grips are replacements and have minor edge and handling wear. The action functions very well, and the crisp original markings and engraving patterns are all fine.

The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number "73246" is stamped between the tang screws.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The rifle has 95% plus of the original blue and 90% casehardened finish. Wear of the barrel is limited to some very minor edge wear at the muzzle and several insignificant scratches on the right side of the barrel. The casehardened finish on the buttplate has a smooth silver patina. The bolt retains nearly all of the high polish blue finish; the blue on the loading gate has faded to a plum patina. Documented Extremely Rare Exhibition Panel Scene Factory Engraved German Silver Frame Winchester Mod

Lot # 3014 (Sale Order: 15 of 856)

Documented Extremely Rare Exhibition Panel Scene Factory Engraved German Silver Frame Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter Connected to Exhibition Shooter Chevalier Ira Paine

Manufactured in 1870, this extraordinary Winchester Model 1866 lever action rifle features the only solid German silver frame and is decorated with a highly detailed factory exhibition quality deep relief engraving with panel scenes. Although the rifle is not signed externally, the engraving was probably executed by Master Engraver Conrad Ulrich and represents some of his most elaborate work. Model 1866s with similar engraved patterns attributed to Conrad Ulrich are found in R.L. Wilson's book "The Book of Winchester Engraving." See, for example, pages 97, 98 and 99. The scrollwork and panel scenes are of are of extremely high grade factory work from the period. The solid German silver frame sides are adorned with a profusion of deep relief scrollwork with stylish borders. The scrollwork extends to the frame tangs and top and underside surfaces. Scrollwork surrounds an engraved dog on the left rear side of the frame while a fine panel scene of a hunter with his dog is engraved on the left side of the frame ahead of the side plate. The right side of the frame features a leopard engraved at the rear and two additional panel scenes. The first scene depicts a hunter taking aim at a stag in a dense forest. The second scene depicts a dog chasing a rabbit in an open field. The panel scenes are cut with a light touch, associated with Conrad Ulrich. The scrollwork extends to the forend cap, cartridge elevator and barrel. Note that wedges of scrollwork are featured on the barrel at the muzzle, mid-point and breech. At the muzzle the scrollwork extends to seven barrel flats with the addition of an engraved band. An eagle's head is engraved on the upper tang. The serial number on the lower tang is inside a scroll banner. The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" and is flanked by scrollwork. The barrel is fitted with a blade front sight (missing bead) and a notch rear sight. The rifle has a solid German silver frame, cartridge elevator and forend cap, niter blue loading gate and casehardened hammer with the remaining metal surfaces silver plated. Mounted with a factory highly figured varnished walnut straight grip stock (3x) with fine checkering on the forearm and wrist and fitted with a shotgun buttplate. The accompanying factory letter confirms the rifle configuration, octagon barrel, 3x varnished stock, engraving and silver plating. The factory records note that this rifle was a "special gun transferred from back book" (likely referencing that the rifle was maintained by the factory for a period of years and used as an exhibition piece) and later shipped on May 6, 1878. Note that only 24 Model 1866s actually letter. The provenance of this rifle is discussed in an included March 4, 1974 dated letter written by Belmont L. Worman to Winchester Arms and a 2016 notarized letter from Belmont Worman II, Belmont L. Worman's son. According to Belmont L. Worman, his grandfather, William P. Loper, received this rifle as a gift from famed exhibition shooter Chevalier Ira Paine while working as the general manager of Frank A. Robbins' Circus during the 1880s. Before establishing his own circus, Frank Robbins worked as a concessionaire, or candy butcher as it was called in those days, hawking sweets and learning the showman trade at various circuses, including P.T. Barnum, in the 1870s. Around 1881 Robbins started his own circus, which operated until he retired in the fall of 1915. But retirement did not sit well with Robbins, and in 1916 he entered the carnival business where he became the first showman to use motor trucks for transportation, which up until that time had been exclusively done by train. Robbins died tragically in October 1920 from injuries incurred after a 20 foot fall through a skylight. The lives of Robbins, Loper and Paine crossed paths in the 1880s. Loper and Paine are listed in the Frank A. Robbins' Circus route books, published daily records of the circus, that date for the 1886 and 1887 seasons. Loper is listed as the general manager and Paine is listed as an exhibition shooter. (Paine's wife, Anna, was his assistant.) Known as "King of the Pistol" and "Master Shot of the World," Chevalier Ira Paine was born in 1841 in Providence, RI. After high school he joined a successful quartet, which gained him a considerable reputation. As good as he was on stage, he was an even better exhibition shooter. He may have been the world's finest all around shot during his 25 years as a shooting entertainer. Some of his most chronicled feats involved his public challenges with Captain Adam Bogartus, the legendary late 19th

The hammer, sides of the receiver, lever, and upper tang retain strong case colors. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are both in fine overall condition and retain much of the original oil finish. Fine Original Late Production Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3020 (Sale Order: 21 of 856)

Fine Original Late Production Henry Lever Action Rifle

This Henry lever action rifle was manufactured in 1867 after the New Haven Arms Company name was changed to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in May 1866. Serial number 12850 is generally considered to be the highest Henry rifle serial number although Henry rifles with serial numbers in the 14000 range have been reported. This rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate and blued 24 inch octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The hammer, trigger and lever are casehardened. The stock is straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the late production features which include: straight back, nickel silver front sight blade; folding leaf rear sight with elevator bar stop screw and 900 yard center notch; large, brass magazine follower; beveled magazine follower cut in the receiver; second style buttplate with sharply pointed heel and second style receiver without a rear sight dovetail. The left side of the stock is fitted with a sling swivel, and the left side of the barrel has a screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The sling swivel and loop were standard features on late production Henry rifles. The buttplate has a hinged brass trapdoor, and the butt trap contains the jointed steel cleaning rod furnished with late production Henry rifles. The cleaning rod is missing the fourth section with the brass tip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style New Haven Arms Co. legend introduced about serial number 4000. This legend; "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT.", is located ahead of the rear sight and is larger than the legend found on early Henry rifle barrel and has all serif letters. The top of the barrel is also stamped with the serial number "12768" between the rear sight and the receiver. The serial number "12768" was also stamped on the inside of the buttplate. The stock was not removed to view the serial numbers stamped on the left side of the lower tang and in the upper tang inlet of the stock. Buttplate and stock screws on late production Henry rifles are not serial numbered. The small "W" inspection mark used by Oliver Winchester is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Class: Antique

Fine. This rifle is all original and retains 30% of the blue finish which is mostly contained in the protected areas on the barrel/magazine. The balance of the barrel/magazine has a dark brown patina that shows minimal handling wear. The barrel edges are sharp, and the legend and serial number are crisp. The rear sight is complete and original to the rifle. The brass receiver and buttplate have a deep and very attractive patina that can only be acquired over time. The brass components shows no indication of ever been polished. The receiver is also in fine condition with tight side plate joints; wear is limited to a few very minor scratches and handling marks. The buttplate is slightly lifted on top and is in the same condition as the receiver and shows only very light handling wear. The hammer, trigger and lever have an even, plum-brown patina. The stock is in very fine, untouched condition with a few scattered handling and storage marks. This is a great example of an untouched, completely original Henry rifle that apparently saw very little use. This is one of the highest serial number Henry rifle ever offered by the Rock Island Auction Company.

Desirable Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action .40-82 Caliber Carbine with Factory Letter

Lot # 3024 (Sale Order: 25 of 856)

Desirable Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action .40-82 Caliber Carbine with Factory Letter

The included factory letter confirms the carbine configuration, .40-82 caliber, sight for smokeless, and shotgun buttplate. The carbine was received in the warehouse on April 13, 1903 and shipped on August 5, 1903, order number 195085. The carbine is chambered for the rarely encountered .40-82 caliber, which was introduced in 1885 for the Winchester single shot and also available for the Model 1886. The caliber was favored by elk and heavy game hunters but despite its popularity, rifles in this caliber are rarely encountered. Most of the original .40-82 Winchester single shot and 1886 rifles have been rebarreled for modern calibers. This Model 1886 rifle retains its original .40-82 caliber barrel as confirmed by the factory letter. The .40-82 cartridge was phased out by 1935. A pinned blade front sight is mounted ahead of the front magazine band, and the ladder rear sight is graduated from 0-20. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and "40-82/W.C.F." at the breech. The left side of the receiver has a saddle ring stud with ring. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model/trademark information, and the lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and serial number. Mounted on a smooth forearm and straight grip stock fitted with a special order checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate featuring the embossed factory logo.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. The carbine retains 80% plus original blue finish thinning to a brown. 40% of the original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. A section of hard rubber (which is included) has detached from the buttplate. The wood is fine with a minor crack on the forearm (underside) and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This is a very desirable Winchester Carbine in 40.82 caliber.
