Imperial Japanese 19th Century Tanegashima Matchlock Musket - no FFL needed (A)

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 20 of 349)

This Imperial Japanese 19th Century Tanegashima Matchlock Musket is in very good condition with brass furniture and lock, a very nice stock and a clean 40" barrel (in the white). The first documented introduction of the firearm which became known as the "Tanegashima" matchlock was through the Portuguese in 1543. The Tanegashima seems to have been based on snap matchlocks that were produced in India, and came from the island where Portuguese adventurers on board was driven to anchor by a storm. The lord of the Japanese island Tanegashima Tokitaka purchased two matchlock muskets from the Portuguese and put a swordsmith to work in copying the matchlock barrel and firing mechanism. Within a few years the use of the tanegashima in battle forever changed the way war was fought in Japan, and from 1560, firearms were used in large battles in Japan.

Bernadelli-Manufactured M1841 Mississippi Rifle marked-Gold Rush, Afton VA, 1972 - no FFL needed(JE)

Lot # 20 (Sale Order: 21 of 349)

This Bernadelli-Manufactured M1841 Mississippi Rifle is marked-Gold Rush, Afton VA, 1972. It is a .58 caliber rifle with a 32" barrel, walnut stained hardwood stock. two brass barrel bands, brass tipped ramrod, buttplate and patch box, metal sling brackets and classic wide trigger guard . Appears new except for the very lighest hint of discolaration around nipple area only and normal wear. These were the first Mississippi rifles ever imported, brought in by Frank Garrett, a Sutler and Skirmisher from Norfolk, Virginia that went over to Italy in the early 1970's and persuaded Bernadelli to put the Mississippi Rifle back into production. Bernadelli required a fairly hefty order to amortize the expense of "tooling up" to make the Mississippi's, Garrett approached Bill Edwards of Afton, Virginia to go in with him and agree to buy a number of Mississippi Rifles from the first production run. Bill Edwards was a former Technical Editor of "Guns Magazine" and one of the three men responsible for the birth of the modern black powder industry. Edwards was also the author of the book "Civil War Guns" and had a side business called the Gold Rush Gun Shop. This is one of the rifles he marketed.
