Century Dollar Framed Art piece Collage

Lot # 12b (Sale Order: 22 of 500)

DRIVER BOYS (Phil. Evening Telegraph, September 8, 1900) Left 1900-P MS-64; Right(Rev) 1900-0 MS-64; (Plus encapsulated anthracite coal pieces at bottom); SIZE: 32 ½ X 23 ½ The anthracite (hard coal) mine strike in Pennsylvania in 1900 prompted many front-page articles in major newspapers. The headline under the photograph reads: "DRIVER BOYS START BIG STRIKE IN MINES." The sub-heading states: "The Youngsters at Tunnel Drift Go Out for an Increase of Ten cents a Day in Their Wages - - General Strike Will Be Ordered Today." This photo of 20 boys with smooth faces and bemused expressions suggests the innocence of youth against the bleak setting of shovels, lunch pails, lamp hats and a dinner bell. Then there is "Naughty Jackie," the boy at the left bottom corner grasping his shovel between his legs in a provocative manner, lending a deep sense of humanity to this sad scene of child labor. Anthracite coal pieces, the end-product of the boys' labor driving mules through coal tunnels, are encapsulated at the bottom of the collage.
