Early French Bisque Poupee by Adelaide Huret in Superb Early Silk Costume 9000/12,000

Bisque shoulder head with very plump rounded face, painted blue eyes with glazed accent at the lower eyes, thick upper eyeliner, painted lashes, arched feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with accent dots on the heart-shaped upper lip, accent line between the lips, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, all-wooden fully-articulated body with dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles, swivel waist and pivot joint at thighs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Adelaide Huret, circa 1858. Value Points: especially fine sculpting accentuating the rounded nose and chin, very choice delicately-blushed complexion, on shapely wooden body with deluxe detail of articulation, and wearing superb early silk gown with matching fringe-trimmed jacket, pressed flannel bonnet, bone-handled parasol with silk shade, undergarments, and leather ankle boots signed "Huret a Paris" in green stamp (buttons missing). Early Grodnertal Wooden Doll with Superb Original Costume 2500/3500

All-wooden doll with one-piece head and torso, heart-shaped face on slender elongated throat, dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, painted complexion, hair and facial features, black hair with stippled details of curls around the face, painted tiny grey outlined eyes with defined lashes, tiny closed mouth, blushed cheeks, pierced ears. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1830. Value Points: pristine preservation of the superb doll, including original costume comprising embroidered silk stockings, leather slippers with rose silk bows, embroidered gown with laced bodice, rose silk jacket, embroidered coin purse, earrings, and outstanding woven bonnet over hand-knit snood. Grand and Very Fine Early Grodnertal Lady with Painted Bodice 7500/9500

One-piece carved wooden head and upper torso, oval-shaped face with pointy chin, very elongated throat, sculpted ears, sculpted hair with painted curls around the forehead, deeply-defined hair including a narrow braid that criss-crosses at the back of head and loops around the high decorative comb at her crown, painted brown eyes in defined sockets, painted lashes and brows, aquiline-shaped nose, closed mouth, defined chin, sculpted yoke with painted floral decorations, dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, swivel waist, painted green slippers with black edging. Condition: structurally excellent, very fine light restoration of painted features is possible. Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1830. Value Points: exceptionally rare and luxurious grand size with artistic sculpting, rare swivel waist, elaborate coiffure, decorative yoke, and having original early costume comprising gown, undergarments, silk slippers, jewelry. Early 18th Century English Wooden Doll, Original Costume, 1739 Dated Coin Pocket 12,000/18,000

28" (71 cm.) One piece wooden head and torso with very full cheeks, elongated throat, shapely high bosom and tiny waist, linen-over-wooden upper arms with iron pin hinging, wooden lower arms and legs with dowel jointing at elbows, hips and knees, very shapely calves and separate fingers, brown enamel inset eyes, all-around painted lashes, heavy eyelids with black upper eyeliner, feathered brows, closed mouth, cheek blush, original wig. Condition: very good original finish with some typical rubs, small flake on upper left eye rim. Comments: English, circa 1730, the grand size and luxury costume indicate original presentation for aristocratic family. Value Points: the grand-sized doll with highly-characterized expression and original finish is wearing her original costume comprising blue silk damask open robe over rose hand-quilted silk petticoat, undergarments, superbly-fitted laced stays, blue and white checkered linen pannier, stockings with garters, fitted silk shoes with little heels, embroidered lace cap, leather gloves fitted to her hands, and, finally, hanging coin pockets with embroidered detail (one pocket embroidered S.S. and the other 1739). The doll has a blue ribbon award from 1988 UFDC convention, and was described ads "exceptional" in a 1994 Contemporary Doll Collector article titled "The Amazing Collections of Estelle Johnston" by John Darcy Noble....more

German Porcelain Figure "Servant with Swaddling Baby" by Meissen 600/900

Standing upon a porcelain base is a porcelain figure of a woman with well-detailed costume including ruffled bonnet, apron, and plaid shawl, having an unusual "mask" face, and holding a swaddled baby in her arm. Excellent condition. Marks: (Meissen blue crossed swords). Comments: Meissen, mid-1800s, the figure was discussed by Estelle Johnston in a January 1991 article "Swaddled Babes" in Dolls Magazine in which she noted that the figure was from the Commedia dell'Arte series, depicting the servant Gnaga holding the swaddled babe in her arms, and pointing out the resemblance of the baby to doll's heads of the same era. Hand-pressed thick paste porcelain shoulderhead with pink-tinted complexion, perfectly oval face, elongated strong throat, sculpted brown hair arranged with center part and short finger curls around the sides and back of head, enhanced by deeply incised comb marks and shaded coloring, deeply-sculpted eye sockets with defined eyelids, upper-glancing blue eyes, black and red upper eyeliner, ombre eye shadow, feathered brown brows, aquiline nose, closed mouth with well-shaped lips, blushed cheeks, four sew holes on the front and four on the back of shoulderplate rim, newer muslin stitch-jointed body, pink-tinted porcelain arms, well costumed in green silk brocade dress, undergarments, stockings, woven shoes, jewelry. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: circa 1855, the maker of the doll remains a mystery; various makers have been suggested including Royal Copenhagen, Schlaggenwald, and, in an article written by Estelle Johnston in Antique Doll Collector, May 2013, Jacob Petit of France is proposed based upon the unusual placement of sew holes on the shoulderplate rim. Value Points: extremely rare doll, of which only three other examples are documented to exist, with remarkable quality of sculpting enhanced by very fine artistic painting and very rare color of hair....more
