Rare Special Order Winchester Semi-Deluxe Model 1894 Lever Action Carbine with Extremely Rare Factor

Lot # 3000 (Sale Order: 1 of 824)

Rare Special Order Winchester Semi-Deluxe Model 1894 Lever Action Carbine with Extremely Rare Factory Swiss Buttplate

Manufactured in 1924, this is truly a rare example of a special order Winchester semi-deluxe Model 1894 carbine with nickel plated brass barrel bands and Swiss buttplate. According to a Model 1894 records survey conducted by Gael Oswalt and John Hawk, only five Model 1894 carbines with Swiss buttplates and only 493 Model 1894 carbines with pistol grip stocks were cataloged. Photocopies of excerpts from the survey are included. This carbine (951408) is not listed by serial number among the Model 1894s that were studied because records after serial number 353,999 are nonexistent. The writer believes that this is a factory original special order Winchester Semi-Deluxe Model 1894 lever action carbine with Swiss buttplate. The number "177" is stamped on the inside of the buttplate, upper tang stock cut-out, butt and right side of upper tang. There are also two small dots marked by the "177" marking on the upper tang. These small dots could possibly indicate a type of special feature. It has beaded blade Marble front and folding ladder rear sights, checkered forearm and pistol grip stock and hard rubber Winchester grip cap. The Winchester factory barrel legend is marked on the left side, and the Winchester factory oval proof is marked on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech.

Very fine. The carbine retains 60% plus original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The barrel bands and buttplate retain 90% plus original nickel plating. The wood is fine with a gouge near the toe, a number of minor handling marks and some worn checkering. Mechanically excellent. This is a rare special order Winchester Model 94 saddle ring carbine with Swiss buttplate that is undoubtedly missing from nearly all Winchester collections.

The serial number "279787" is stamped in tiny numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. The barrel has the Winchester charcoal blue finish, and the dust cover and loading gate are bright blue. Fine. The barrel has 85% plus of the original blue finish and crisp markings. The buttplate retains about 90% of the casehardened finish with some light pitting and age discoloration on the heel and toe. The highly figured, deluxe, fancy grade stock and forearm are very good and retain most of the piano finish. The checkering shows wear on contact points but remains excellent. The stock is cracked through the wrist at the rear tang screw and has an old glued repair. A professional stock repair would greatly enhance this very desirable Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle.

The upper stock inlet and inside of the buttplate are also stamped with the serial number "38056". The left interior side of the upper tang is signed with the "J.U." initials of master engraver John Ulrich. The grade of the fancy grain walnut stock and forearm, "O X X X", is stamped on the left side of the upper tang behind the initials. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED -MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The forearm cap, receiver and crescent buttplate are silver-plated and covered with a delicate gold-wash. The barrel has a "Rocky Mountain" style front sight with nickel-silver blade and Henry style folding leaf rear sight. An early, Sharps style, folding peep sight with 3 1/2-inch stem is mounted on the upper receiver tang. The Henry style buttplate has a sharply pointed heel and hinged trap door. Gold plated Winchester sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. The forearm cap, sides, top and bottom of the receiver, cartridge elevator and buttplate heel are engraved with intertwined foliate and arabesque scrollwork on a fine punch-dot background with scalloped single and double line borders. The left side plate features a highly detailed game scene of a hound chasing a leaping stag. The right side plate has an open inscription panel surrounded by scrollwork. The barrel and magazine tube retain nearly 90% of the strong original blue finish with wear limited to the edges and high points. The barrel legend is crisp. The loading gate retains 90% of the fire blue finish. Hammer and lever retain nearly all of their original casehardened finish muted on exposed points and vibrant in flashes. The sliver-plated forearm cap, receiver and buttplate show light to moderate wear on contact points and the plating is purposefully absent from the game scene on the left side plate, thus giving prominence to this extraordinary scene. The intricate and flawlessly executed engraving is crisp. The highly figured, fancy grade, walnut stock and forearm remain in very fine condition with a few scattered handling and storage marks. The case exterior is in good overall condition with moderate wear. The baize interior lining is in fair condition. One compartment partition is broken from contact with the tang sight. The cartridge cartons have been sealed and remain in very good condition; two of the cartons are full and one is empty. This is a truly magnificent example of a deluxe, factory engraved, John Ulrich signed Winchester Model 1866 rifle with very rare period case and accessories.

This Third Model 1873 Rifle has the characteristic integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. The rifle is accompanied by a Winchester Factory Letter that states this rifle serial number 135557 was received in the warehouse October 29, 1883 and shipped from the Winchester warehouse on October 30, 1883, in order number 7967 and lists it with an octagon barrel plain trigger, checkered stock with pistol grip and engraved gold plated receiver, etc. The rifle has a full octagon barrel, and full length magazine. The left side plate features an oval panel engraved with a hunting scene that depicts a hunter shooting an elk. The engraving covers the top of the receiver, the dust cover rail, dust cover, the bottom of the frame and bottom of the cartridge elevator. The engraved scrollwork covers the sides of the forearm cap and the top of the buttplate. The engraving appears to be the work of Master Engraver Conrad Ulrich. The stock and the forearm are highly figured fancy walnut with a high polish varnish finish. The forearm has a finely checkered panel, and the stock has a checkered pistol grip. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The upper tang is roll stamped "MODEL 1873." with roll-stamped scroll work at either end of the model designation. Fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 60% plus original blue finish. The frame, forearm cap and buttplate retain traces of the original gold-plated finish in protected areas with some. The balance of the metal surfaces has aged to a deep brown patina. There is some minor pitting on the buttplate and some scattered mild surface rust. The silver-plated hammer and loading lever have aged to an even silver-gray patina. The wood is very good with fine forearm checking, sharp pistol grip checkering, some scattered minor handling marks and 70% plus of the finish remaining. Although this rare deluxe Model 1873 rifle shows age and moderate handling wear, it is unquestionably in original condition. This is a very handsome example of the finest Winchester 19th century craftsmanship that would be the centerpiece of many advanced Winchester collections. This exceptional Winchester Model 1873 has that truly original "out-of-the-attic" look.

The matching serial number is also stamped on the inside of the buttplate toe, on the left side of the lower tang (under stock wrist) and in the upper stock tang slot. Very good plus. The barrel/magazine tube have a crisp smooth mottled gray patina. The hammer and lever have a smooth dark patina. The brass components have a natural aged patina. The stock is fine showing some scattered minor dents and dings. The first line of the barrel address is faint (factory error), otherwise the markings are clear. The action is fine.

Documented Swiss Butt Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Extra Lightweight Takedown Lever Action Rifle wit

Lot # 3009 (Sale Order: 10 of 824)

Documented Swiss Butt Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Extra Lightweight Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Unique and Rare Special Order Features

Special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Extra Lightweight Takedown Rifle manufactured in 1901. This rifle has several rarely encountered special features that include a nickel-plated Swiss buttplate, nickel-plated receiver and forearm cap and matted barrel. The forearm and pistol grip stock are special order, highly figured, fancy grade walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and a high gloss piano finish. The pistol grip has a black, hard rubber cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." The barrel has a Lyman "Jack Sight" with colored bead and the scarce Lyman two-leaf folding rear sight; one leaf has a flat top with sight triangle, and the second leaf has a wide "V". A Lyman "N-Ni" rear sight with locking lever is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Records Office letter that describes it as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 45/70, Barrel Type: Round, Barrel Length: 24 inches, Trigger: Plain, Checkered stock, Pistol grip, 1/2 Magazine, Swiss butt plate, Takedown" and "matted barrel." The Cody letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on February 20, 1901, and returned for repairs on August 15, 1912. The letter does not describe the nickel-plated components, but there is no question that they are factory. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN. CONN U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL" and the caliber "45-70" are roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. Oval Winchester "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel behind the caliber markings and on the top of the receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and serial number "123332" behind the rear tang screw. Deluxe Model 1886 rifles are scarce. The combination of deluxe fancy grade pistol grip stock and forearm, takedown barrel, rarely encountered Swiss buttplate and matted barrel top combined with the nickel-plated/blue finish and special order front, rear and receiver sights make this a one-of-a-kind rifle.

Very fine. More than 85% of the blue finish is present on the barrel with some light edge wear at the muzzle. The barrel markings are sharp. The exposed portion of the 1/2 magazine has the usual wear found on the magazines of take-down rifles and the blue finish has faded to a blue-gray patina. Most of the blue finish is present on the bolt and trigger. The edges of the receiver sight shows light-moderate wear. The top and sides of the hammer and lever have about 80% of the mottled case colors; the case colors on the bottom of the hammer show handling wear and have faded to a silver-gray patina. The forearm cap, takedown collar, receiver, and Swiss buttplate retain 85% of the original nickel-plated finish. The sides and contact points of the receiver have some handling wear and scattered flaking; nearly all the nickel plating is present on the forearm cap and buttplate. The highly figured fancy grade walnut stock and forearm are both fine. The piano finish on the rear portion of the forearm and forward edges of the stock wrist show handling wear, and there are several scratches and areas of flaked finish on the sides of the stock. This is an attractive example of a deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Light Weight Takedown Rifle with rare special order nickel and blue finish, Swiss buttplate and matted barrel.

Cased Henry rifles are extremely rare; this is one of the few examples ever offered for sale.

Very fine. The rifle retains about 30% of the strong original blue finish with a balance and even mottled plum patina The barrel edges are sharp and the factory legend and serial number are crisp. Wear is limited to some minor scratches and light handling marks. The bore is bright and in exceptional condition for a Henry rifle. The brass receiver and buttplate are both excellent. The side plate joints are tight. Wear is limited to a few very minor scratches and handling marks. The buttplate and tang screws have most of the original blue finish and are in very fine condition. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have muted with age but remain vibrant in flashes. The walnut stock retains most of the original varnish finish and is in very good overall condition with moderate handling wear. The case is in good overall condition. The velvet lining is faded and has some stains and compression marks but remains in good overall condition. The cartridge carton is sealed and is in very fine condition. Experts believe that most Henry rifles were privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers and saw service in the Civil War. Early production rifles like this example are rarely encountered in fine or better condition. This is an outstanding example of an early production Henry rifle that may be one of the few period cased, regular production, Henry rifles extant.

Rare and Magnificent John Ulrich Engraved and Signed Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 Rifle with Factory

Lot # 3012 (Sale Order: 13 of 824)

Rare and Magnificent John Ulrich Engraved and Signed Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 Rifle with Factory Letter

This is an extraordinary factory engraved Winchester deluxe Second Model 1876 lever action rifle correctly signed by Master Engraver John Ulrich. Ulrich only signed his best pieces. The receiver sides and top are decorated with Ulrich's distinctive scroll and border engraving on a punch-dot background. The left side plate is engraved with a highly detailed game scene that features a whitetail buck, and the right side plate is engraved with an open ribbon. The scrollwork continues on the top of the receiver, dust cover, upper tang, bottom of the cartridge elevator, buttplate heel and the sides of the forearm cap. "J. ULRICH" is stamped in tiny letters on the lower tang behind the trigger. The rifle has a blued full octagon barrel. The tip of the half-magazine, forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, cartridge elevator, bolt, hammer, trigger, lever, and shotgun buttplate are nickel plated. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, fancy grade, highly figured walnut with style H checkering. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The barrel has a folding combination front sight and a Lyman two leaf folding rear sight. The front leaf has a wide v-notch notch and the rear leaf has a flat top and triangle. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT/KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "CAL. 45-60" is hand engraved on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "45-60" is roll-stamped on the bottom of the cartridge elevator in script letters. "MODEL.1876." is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The serial number is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever catch. The lower tang is also marked with the assembly number “210,” “XX” and “O” and “S” inspector marks. The upper tang mortise of the stock also has the assembly number “210” along with the letter “P.” The inside of toe of the buttplate is stamped “17.” The toe of the buttstock under the buttplate is also stamped with the number “17.” Accompanying this rifle is a factory 2012 dated letter. It is listed by serial number 18464 as a rifle in 45-60 with octagon barrel, plain trigger, half magazine and full nickel finish and a warehouse date of 8 November 1881, a shipment date of 8 November 1881 and a repair and return date of 25 August 1896. There is no mention of the engraving. A second factory letter is also included. This 2012 dated letter is for a Model 1876, serial number 18463, which lists a rifle in 45-60 with an octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, shotgun butt, engraved 5 and half nickel finish. Rifle 18463 has been identified as having an octagon barrel, full magazine, full nickel finish, plain stock, set trigger and no engraving. This description does not conform to the records for this rifle. It is clear and verified that both 1876s, numbers 18463 and 18464, exhibit a factory recording error where order data for the rifles was transposed. Except for the plain trigger, the listing for serial number 18463 matches this Ulrich engraved rifle’s configuration. Both rifles were shipped on 8 November 1881 and the information was mistakenly recorded by the ledger keeper on the other rifle’s line. This is easily seen on the included copy of the factory ledger page. We have seen these transposed errors before. The writer is 100% certain that this is an authentic Ulrich engraved and signed Winchester Model 1876!

Very fine. The rifle retains 60% of the blue finish on the barrel and has developed an attractive plum-blue patina. The forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, hammer, lever and trigger have more than 80% of the nickel plated finish. The buttplate shows slightly more wear and retains 70% of the nickel finish. The flawlessly executed scrollwork, borders and game scene are crisp and John Ulrich's signature stamp is fully legible. The highly figured fancy grain stock and forearm are in good condition. The checkering on the pistol grip and forearm shows moderate handling wear. This is a magnificent example of a scarce Deluxe Winchester Model 1876 rifle with the rarely encountered combination of blue and nickel plated finish in addition to engraving signed by master engraver John Ulrich. A true investment grade firearm of the highest rarity.

Phenomenal First Year Production Damascus Barrel Winchester Model 1887 Deluxe Lever Action Shotgun w

Lot # 3013 (Sale Order: 14 of 824)

Phenomenal First Year Production Damascus Barrel Winchester Model 1887 Deluxe Lever Action Shotgun with Factory Letter

Offered here is an excellent example of a first year production Winchester Deluxe Model 1887 lever action shotgun with Damascus barrel. The Model 1887 was the first highly successful repeating shotgun. 64,855 were manufactured in 1887-1901. Most prior shotguns were single or double barrel break actions. The Model 1887 held six shots and could be fired rapidly. It is no surprise that this fine arm was based on designs by John M. Browning given his long and productive relationship with Winchester. Production of this model began just two years after Browning sold his single shot design to Winchester. The Model 1887 built upon the solid reputation of Winchester’s lever action rifles and carbines that were already in widespread use throughout the country. Many Model 1887s replaced double barrel coach guns used by "shotgun messengers" employed by express companies and lawmen throughout the country. Cochise County Sheriff John Proctor Slaughter is known to have been fond of these six shot repeaters. This excellent deluxe version of the Model 1887 features a single bead sight on the Damascus barrel with a modified choke and a frame marked with the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. monogram on the left side. The bottom of the receiver at the front is marked with the first year production three digit serial number "414," and the lower tang is marked with the Winchester address and patent information in four lines. It is mounted with a highly figured and checkered forearm and pistol grip stock. The buttstock has a checkered factory buttplate. The length of pull is 13 inches. The included factory letter confirms the gauge, barrel length, checkered stock, hard rubber buttplate and takedown configuration. It was received in warehouse on June 8, 1887 and shipped on the same day.

Excellent. The barrel retains 98% plus original brown Damascus with loss at the muzzle. The magazine tube retains 98% plus original blue finish showing a few minor scratches. The remaining metal surfaces retain nearly 90% plus vivid original case colors with some thinning of the upper tang. The wood is also excellent showing some minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. The buttplate has a minor chip missing near the toe. Mechanically excellent. A gorgeous deluxe Model 1887 shotgun. You would be hard pressed to find a better example, especially for a first year production.

Exceptional Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Lot # 3017 (Sale Order: 18 of 824)

Exceptional Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This excellent early production Winchester Model 1876 Rifle was manufactured in 1877. The included factory letter confirms the round barrel and plain trigger. The rifle was received in warehouse on 27 February 1878 and shipped on 8 May 1878. The letter lists a returned date of 9 October 1879 and a second shipment date of 25 December 1879. The rifle has the early, special order dust cover with impressed oval thumb-piece and dust cover rail that is screwed to the top of the receiver. It has a 28 inch round barrel, full length magazine and crescent steel buttplate with sliding brass trap. The butt trap contains the original jointed steel cleaning rod. The barrel has a dovetail mounted front sight with nickel-silver blade and folding adjustable leaf rear sight. The rear sight is graduated to 1,000 yards and marked "1876". The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The rifle has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and dust cover. The hammer, trigger, loading lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The bolt and loading port have a fiery niter blue finish. The select straight grain walnut forearm and high comb stock have the standard oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped with the early plain designation: "MODEL 1876". The lower tang is engraved with the serial number "1735" behind the loading lever latch. As an early production rifle chambered for the standard .45-75 W.C.F. cartridge, the rifle has no caliber designation markings. The Model 1876, nicknamed the "Centennial Model" for the year of its introduction, was the first Winchester rifle designed for use of large caliber cartridges suitable for big game. Although fewer than 64,000 Model 1876 rifles were manufactured between 1876 and 1891, the Model 1876 was enthusiastically endorsed by American hunters; most notably Theodore Roosevelt.

Excellent plus. The rifle retains 98% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish overall. Very minor wear is limited to the receiver high points, side plate edges and forearm cap. The case colors on the hammer and loading lever are vivid. The casehardened finish on the buttplate is slightly faded with traces of silvering but retains most of the original case colors. The loading port has nearly all of the niter blue finish. The stock and forearm are both in excellent plus condition with nearly all of the original oil finish; wear is limited to several insignificant storage marks. The markings on the barrel and receiver tang are crisp. This is an exceptional example of a second-year production Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Rifle. This rifle is one of the finest Model 1876 lever action rifles ever offered by the Rock Island Auction Company. It would be a stand-out piece in the most advanced Winchester collection.

The barrel, full tubular magazine, bolt and trigger are blue. 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the serial number are marked on the lower tang, and the upper tang is marked "- MODEL 1886-". Mounted with a checkered walnut forearm with a steel forend cap and pistol grip stock with a steel shotgun buttplate and gold initial oval. The accompanying Factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, and checkered pistol grip stock with a shotgun butt. The rifle was equipped with a set trigger (presently a plain replacement) when it was received in the warehouse on October 13, 1887 and shipped the next day to order number 23828.

Very good with a smooth brown patina on the barrel and magazine tube and a smooth mottled silver gray and brown patina on the remaining metal surfaces. The revarnished wood is also very good with some scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The checkering remains crisp. The markings are clear. The action needs work as the lever does not retract.
