Exceptional New Haven Arms Co. Lever Action No. 2 Navy Pistol

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 1082)

Exceptional New Haven Arms Co. Lever Action No. 2 Navy Pistol

This is an outstanding example of a Volcanic No. 2 Navy lever action pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. between 1857 and 1860. The pistol has a blued eight-inch barrel with integral magazine, large Navy-style brass receiver, casehardened hammer and loading lever and two-piece varnished walnut grips. A brass cone front sight is mounted on the barrel and a fixed open rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the receiver. The serial number "2026" is stamped on the right side of the of the lever, the left side of the frame underneath the grip and stamped on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The end of the barrel is stamped with the assembly number "349" beneath the barrel sleeve. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "PATENTED NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854". This is the abbreviated marking utilized by Oliver Winchester for the NEW HAVEN ARMS Co. after he assumed control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. in April, 1857. Experts estimate that the New Haven Arms Co. manufactured 700-1,000 No. 2 lever action pistols.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The pistol retains 90% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel and integral magazine. Wear is limited to some high points and minor handling marks and scratches. The lightly stamped barrel markings are clear. The once polished brass frame is in fine condition. The side plate joints are extremely tight and the receiver has minimal handling marks. The hammer and loading lever have a mottled gray patina with strong traces of the casehardened finish. The grips are also in very fine condition, nearly 90% of the high polish finish is present. The only significant wear is a small chip on the heel of the left grip. This is a fantastic example of a key piece in the evolution of U.S. repeating firearms and the history of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co.

Civil War Era New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 1082)

Civil War Era New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Offered here is a Civil War era Henry Lever Action Rifle as manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1864. The rifle has the distinctive Henry "gun metal" brass receiver, German silver blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line patent date/address marking ahead of the rear sight and the serial number "4191" at the breech. This serial number also is stamped on the left side of the lower tang, stock inlet, buttplate and both buttplate screws. The buttplate is the First Style with rounded heel which was eventually replaced in the mid 4000 serial number range with a sharp pointed buttplate heel. The buttplate has a hinged brass trapdoor (cleaning rod not included). The left side of the stock and barrel have a factory sling swivel and screw mounted loop for a sling hook. Experts believe that most Henry rifles made before 1865 were privately purchased by individual federal soldiers who wanted the unprecedented firepower offered by the 15-shot Henry repeating rifle. The Henry rifle was especially popular with soldiers in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky regiments. Many of these soldiers purchased Henry rifles from dealers in Louisville, Kentucky, and other Midwest cities in 1864 using re-enlistment bounties.

Class: Antique

About good. The barrel and magazine have a dark mottled patina and extensive minor pitting. The receiver is very good with scattered dings and a pleasing aged mustard yellow patina overall. The rear sight and sling swivel are replacements. The heavily worn stock is fair showing a number of moderate dings, chipping and scratches and a missing sizable chip near the buttplate tang. The lever is loose as it does not stay up without the use of the catch, otherwise the action cycles.

Winchester Model 1873

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 1082)

Documented Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Extremely Rare Seven-Leaf Express Sights, Factory Letter and R.L. Wilson Letter Attributing to John Ulrich

The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .44 caliber, set trigger, sling and swivel, factory engraving at an added cost of $2.50, nickel trims, and 7-leaf express and Beach sights when it was received in the warehouse on December 22, 1891, and shipped on December 24. A letter from noted firearms historian and author R.L. Wilson describing this rifle in full detail is also included. The engraving consists of scrollwork and borders. A running deer is engraved inside a circular panel on the left side plate. The scrollwork extends to the forend cap, dust cover, cartridge elevator and buttplate tang. In his letter Wilson identifies the engraving as "classic Ulrich family American scroll" and "the probable engraver of this rifle was John Ulrich." (A similar factory engraved rifle is pictured and described in R.L. Wilson's "Winchester Engraving" on page 194.) The rifle is equipped with factory documented Beach and 7-leaf express rear sights, a combination associated with African safari hunting. The first six leaves to the rear sight feature inlaid silver sight lines and are numbered 1-6 respectively. The seventh and final leaf is graduated from 7-10 for 700 to 1,000 yards. According to Winchester expert and author George Madis, "[special order sights] will be rarely found on antique Winchester; very few people would specify non-standard sights." In fact, Madis' study only shows one example with a leaf sight, and that was only a 3-leaf. The sights on this rifle suggest a special order by a buyer who was an experienced hunter and alludes to hunting expeditions in foreign lands. The type of rear sight on this rifle is more generally associated with the big game rifles produced by famed London markers such as Purdey and Holland & Holland. Wilson states in his letter that not even a single 1 of 1,000 Model 1873 rifle had the type of sight combination as seen on this rifle. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address/patent dates information ahead of the rears sight. The upper tang has the model marking, and the lower tang has the serial number. Sling swivels are attached to the forend cap and underside of the buttstock. The type of sling swivels have been identified by Wilson as a rare feature on Model 1873. Mounted on a smooth forearm and straight grip stock fitted with a crescent buttplate featuring a trapdoor (cleaning rod not included). The rifle has a half blue/half nickel finish. According to Madis, "Half-plated finishes, in which the receiver and trimmings were plated, was not as favored as full plating."

Class: Antique

Very good. 20% of original nickel plating remain (mostly in the protected areas), otherwise the rifle has a mottled gray patina with some minor pitting. The wood is good with a couple sizeable chips missing near the upper tang, some chipping near the metal surfaces and some minor pressure dents and scratches. The lever is loose; the action functions properly. An extremely rare Ulrich engraved Model 1873 with factory documented African safari type sights for only the serious Winchester collector who seems to have it all!

The rifle is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes the rifle as: "50 Express Caliber" with "Octagon barrel, Plain trigger, Checkered stock with pistol grip" and "Midrange and Lyman Combination front sights". A folding Lyman Mid Range Vernier Peep Sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "50 EX" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number "90295" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the tang screws. Introduced c. 1893 for the Model 1886 Winchester rifle, the Winchester .50-110-300 Express was one of the most potent cartridges available. Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 rifles chambered for express cartridges are rare and extremely desirable firearms.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. The rifle retains more than 95% of the strong original color casehardened finish. Nearly 95% of the blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine tube assembly showing some delicate and scattered pin prick pitting along high points down the length. The forearm cap, receiver, lever and hammer have almost 95% of the casehardened finish with vivid case colors. The case colors on the crescent buttplate have faded to a mottled silver-gray patina. The piano finished stock and forearm are both excellent with sharp checkering. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm show only minor scattered handling and storage marks. This is an example of one of the most desirable variations of the highly sought-after Winchester Model 1886 rifle.

Documented, Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1873

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 11 of 1082)

Documented, Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Special Military Windgauge Rear Sight and Factory Letter

Identified, special order, deluxe Winchester Model 1873 Sporting rifle manufactured in 1889. This rifle is accompanied by a Winchester Gun Museum factory letter dated 1973, a Winchester Firearms Museum letter dated 1982 and a copy of a magazine article that discusses the rear sight and other special order features, and identifies the original owner of the rifle. The 1982 letter lists the data for "Model 1873, Serial Number 324821" as: "rifle, 32 caliber, 1/2 octagon barrel, plain trigger, sling and swivel, case hardened, checkered stock, pistol grip, shotgun butt, rubber buttplate, 1/2 magazine, military windgauge sight, plain front sight", and "Nice shooter". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on December 27, 1889. The accompanying article entitled, "A Very Special Winchester 1873 s/n 324821" by Warren Webster and Rick Hill focuses on the special military windgauge rear sight, front sight and shotgun buttplate. The article states that this rifle was probably ordered by A.C. Gould who edited the magazine "Shooting and Fishing" and published "Modern American Rifles" under the pen name Ralph Greenwood in 1892. Gould was one of the founders of the National Rifle Association and a proponent of long-range rifle shooting. The article states that the Gould/Greenwood described the special military windgauge rear sight on this rifle along with the ideal target front sight, caliber and buttplate for a target/hunting rifle in "Modern American Rifles" and conclude that this rifle was owned by A.C. Gould. In fact, his pen name is hand marked on the backside of the buttplate. This rifle has the special military windgauge rear sight with special screw-adjustable elevation bar, 1/8-inch wide steel front sight blade and hard rubber, checkered, shotgun buttplate with Winchester logo in the center. All of these special order features are described in detail by Gould/Greenwood in "Modern American Rifles". In addition to the special order sights and buttplate, the rifle has a 24-inch half-round/half-octagon barrel, half magazine, sling swivels on the forearm cap and stock and factory drilled and tapped receiver tang. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, highly figured, fancy grain walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony insert. The Third Model receiver has an integral dust cover rail, dust cover with serrated rear edges and the rounded top found on Model 1873 rifles in .32 and small calibers. The barrel and magazine have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The dust cover is high polish blue and the loading gate is fire blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm have a high gloss, piano, finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "32 W.C.F.", is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat ahead of the receiver. "32 CAL" is stamped in script across the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "- MODEL 1873-" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine overall. This unique Model 1873 rifle is all original very limited careful handling and shooting associated wear. The barrel has 80% of the original blue finish intact with traces of finish wear on the edges and a small and almost unnoticeable (3/4-inch by 1/3-inch) area of pitting on the left side of the barrel just above the forearm ahead of the rear sight. The special front and rear sights have nearly all of the dark, oil-quenched, finish intact and the rear sight leaf spring retains 95% of the nitre blue. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are crisp. The dust cover and bolt have most of the high polish blue finish intact. The loading gate retains 75% of the fire blue finish. 85% plus of the vivid case colors are present of the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger and lever. The highly finished fancy grain stock and forearm retain 95% of the piano finish with sharp checkering. Wear is limited to one tiny dent in the right side of the stock behind the pistol grip and a few scattered and very minor handling marks. It is unusual to identify the owner of any Winchester rifle. Identification of this deluxe Model 1873 rifle with unique sights and other special order features to a prominent 19th Century shooter and author A.C. Gould makes this a one-of-a-kind Model 1873 rifle worthy of a place in the finest firearms collection.

Deluxe, Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Company Henry

Lot # 12 (Sale Order: 12 of 1082)

Deluxe, Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Company Henry Lever Action Rifle

Deluxe, factory engraved Henry lever action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company late in 1864. The rifle has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine and brass receiver. This rifle has the typical New Haven Arms Co. factory engraving found on later production Henry rifles. The engraving features distinctive floral and berry motifs on either side of the forward potion of the receiver, a hound on point on the left side plate and scroll and vine motifs on the right side plate. The engraving covers the top of the receiver and upper tang and the buttplate heel. The engraving on the left side of receiver is nearly identical to the engraving on Henry serial number "9389" illustrated on page 149 of "THE HENRY RIFLE" by Les Quick. This distinctive engraving is believed to have been executed for the New Haven Arms Co. by Samuel J. Hoggson. The brass receiver and buttplate have a delicate gold-plated or gold washed finish with traces of original finish in protected areas. The barrel/magazine is blued and the hammer, trigger and loading lever are color casehardened. The stock is deluxe, highly figured walnut with a high polish piano finish. The barrel has a nickel silver front sight blade and folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight is the late pattern with 900 yard center notch, elevation bar stop screw at the top of the leaf, and elevation bar with rounded ends. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the late, second style legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The second style legend is slightly larger than the legend found on early Henry rifles and utilizes all serif letters. The magazine has the large diameter follower found on all but the earliest Henry rifles and the receiver has a beveled follower slot. The second style receiver lacks the rear sight dovetail found on Henry rifles manufactured thru 1863. The hammer spur has coarse hand knurling. The buttplate is the second style with sharp pointed heel. The buttplate has a hinged trap. The left side of the stock and barrel have the sling swivel and screw fastened loop for a sling hook that was standard on later production Henry rifles. The serial number "7621" is stamped: (1) on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate at the toe. All of the serial numbers match. The late style buttplate and tang screws are, correctly, not serial numbered. The letter "E" is stamped on the left side of the upper receiver tang and "G" is stamped on the left side of the lower tang above the serial number. "E" and "G" may refer to engraving and gold plating. A small "W" indicating this rifle was inspected by Oliver Winchester is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch. Included with the rifle is a 4 piece metal cleaning rod with a brass tip. The rifle is accompanied by copies of e-mail correspondence between the owner and Winchester expert and author R.L. Wilson discussing the gold washed or gold-plated finish. Deluxe factory, engraved Henry rifles with gold or silver plated finishes are rare.

Class: Antique

Fine. The crisp edge, original barrel has a smooth gray-brown patina with strong traces of the bright original blue finish visible in protected areas. The New Haven Arms Co. legend and the serial number are sharp. Half of the original blue is present on the bolt. The brass receiver and buttplate have a very attractive untouched patina with traces of gold plating on the engraving. The distinctive Samuel Hoggson factory engraving is extremely sharp. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have faded to a mottled silver-gray patina. The highly figured, deluxe, walnut or rosewood stock is in very good condition and has about 80% of the refinished piano finish. There is a spliced period repair visible on both sides of the wrist. This repair is a well executed splice which is almost identical on both sides. Wear is limited to scattered handling marks. This is a fine example of a scarce and very desirable deluxe, factory engraved, gold washed or gold-plated Henry rifle. Only very few Henry rifles had a gold finish which was usually reserved for presentation rifles.

Ltd. The Australian dealer special ordered .44 caliber Model 1873s with octagon barrels and half magazines. Each of these rifles featured the "Daisy" marking. This rifle also has a later factory pattern engraving that consists of floral scrollwork on a punch dot background featured on the receiver, cartridge elevator, which is also marked "44 CAL," and buttplate. The left side plate has a game scene engraved inside a circular panel. Although not listed in the factory letter, this embellishment is considered to be done by Master Engraver John Ulrich as expressed in an included handwritten letter by Winchester Master Engraver Pauline Muerrle. The rifle also has dovetail blade and elevation adjustable sights, special order half magazine, two-line Winchester address/patent dates and "44 CAL" markings on the top barrel flat, model marking on the upper tang and crescent buttplate with trapdoor (cleaning rod not included).

Class: Antique

Very good. The rifle retains scattered traces of blue finish with the balance a refinished smooth artificial brown patina. There is some minor pitting (mostly on the receiver). The refinished wood is also very good with some minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.

Winchester Model 1866 Rifle manufactured c. 1869. This "Third Model" rifle has the serial number stamped on the lower tang in block letters behind the trigger. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver, forearm cap and curved buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The rifle has a full-octagon barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style rear, buckhorn rear sight with over-size eyepiece. The rear sight is a period replacement and the original rear sight dove-tail is filled with a crude blank. The upper receiver tang has a single screw and is not factory drilled and tapped. The brass forearm cap is the early style with single screw that enters on the left side. The hammer has border-less knurling on the spur. The crescent buttplate has a hinged trap door and the butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed steel buttplate with brass tip. Factory sling swivels are fitted to the forearm cap and stock. The stock and forearm are straight grain, oil-finished, American walnut. The Winchester legend on the top barrel flat is covered by the rear sight.

Class: Antique

Good. The rifle has a period rear sight added and retains traces of case-colors on protected areas of the hammer and lever. The blue finish on the barrel and magazine has aged to a faded brown patina. The case colors on the hammer, lever and trigger have faded to a mottled gray-brown. The brass forearm cap, receiver and crescent buttplate in very good condition with an attractive, untouched, patina. The brass components shows scattered light scratches and handling marks. The side plate joints are tight and there is no indication the side plates have ever been removed from the receiver. Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1888. This rifle is complete with a Winchester Museum letter that describes this Model 1886 as: "Rifle, 45/90 caliber, 28 inch 1/2 octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock, pistol grip" and "Lyman sights, sporting leaf sight". The letter states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on March 24, 1888 and repaired and returned on "5/7/88". The rifle has a special order blue half-octagon/half-round barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel has a "Winchester Express" front sight blade with colored bead and sporting style, folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight leaf is dated "1876" the top of the leaf and graduated to "10". A Lyman folding combination rear sight with coarsely knurled post is mounted on the receiver tang. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, highly figured, fancy grain walnut with checkered panels and piano finish. The pistol grip has a ebony inlay. The bolt and loading gate have a high polish blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened with vivid case colors. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-90 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number is stamped in script numerals between the rear tang screws.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. The barrel, magazine and rear sight retain 95% of the original blue finish with perfect markings. The bolt and loading gate have 90% of the high polish blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate have 80% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. Wear is limited to some fading on the case colors on the bottom of the receiver and lever and patches of dark corrosion visible on top right rear, with some silvering on the buttplate heel. The stock and forearm are both in excellent overall condition. The checkered panel on the stock has been professionally recut which may have occurred when the rifle was returned to the Winchester for repairs. The recut checkering is expertly done and only noticeable with very close inspection. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm retain nearly 95% of the piano finish; there is some light finish wear on the bottom of the forearm between the checkered panel and the receiver and right side of the pistol grip and a few insignificant handling marks. This is an extremely fine example of a scarce and desirable special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with unique extra length half octagon barrel.

Civil War Era New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 1082)

Civil War Era New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Offered here is a Civil War Era Henry Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1864. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver with the letter "M" engraved on the right side, German silver blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line patent date/address marking ahead of the rear handmade non-factory replacement sight and the serial number "4704" at the breech.

John Ulrich Engraved Winchester Model 1873 Rifle

Lot # 21 (Sale Order: 21 of 1082)

Historic John Ulrich Signed Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle Inscribed to Captain O.E. Michaelis with Factory Letter

Offered here is a John Ulrich signed, engraved, and inscribed Winchester deluxe Model 1873 rifle that was manufactured in 1879. Ulrich signed his work "J. ULRICH" in small letters on the lower tang. The sides of the receiver feature beautifully executed floral scrollwork on a punch dot background. Scrollwork extends to the dust cover, chamber, cartridge elevator and buttplate tang. The right side plate has a circular vignette of a leaping stag. A similar motif is pictured in Winchester "Highly Finished Arms" as reproduced in R.L. Wilson's "The Book of Winchester Engraving" on page 219. Also see page 156 where an image of another Ulrich engraved Model 1876 is shown with this type of vignette. The left side plate has the engraved inscription "CAPTAIN O.E. MICHAELIS." Although the research is not documented, the mostly likely owner is Capt. Otho E. Michaelis, Ph.D. (1843-1890), who was with the U.S. Ordnance Corps, circa 1860s-1880s. Born in Germany, Michaelis emigrated to the United States early in his youth and earned the highest honors from the New York Free Academy. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 23rd New York National Guard and is reported to have participated in campaigns from Harrisburg to Gettysburg. By September 1863, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the Signal Corps. Later, he transferred to the U.S. Ordnance Corps were he quickly distinguished himself. He received a promotion to 1st lieutenant in 1864, the brevet of captain in 1865, promotion to captain in 1874 and major in 1889. He wrote and translated several technical papers and labored to equip soldiers with the best equipment late 19th century technology could produce. In the late 1870s, for instance, he was involved in field testing the Model 1876 Prairie Belt while commanding the Ordnance Depot at Fort Abraham Lincoln. The Prairie Belt was the first official U.S. Army cartridge belt and saw wide use with troops during the Indian Wars and Spanish-American War. In late 1886, Michaelis along with Lt. Col. James Whittemore designed a one-piece buckle for a cartridge belt. At the time of his death in 1890 at Kennebec Arsenal, it was reported that Michaelis' diverse talents in several branches of science afforded him many lucrative offers from the private sector to which he declined in order to continue serving his adopted country. Reflecting on Michaelis' life, a period publication wrote, "It is doubtful if there was another officer in the Army more thoroughly equipped with a mind to take advantage of, and a diligence to secure a complete record of all that is transpiring around him in the field of research." Michaelis was also the ordnance officer for the 7th Cavalry at the time of Custer's Last Stand. On that faithful day, he remained with Brig. Gen. Alfred Terry’s column and was one of the first to arrive at the site of Custer's Last Stand to assist in identifying the dead. This is a Second Model 1873 with dust cover guide rail screwed to the receiver. The barrel is fitted with dovetailed blade and elevation adjustable sights and is marked with the two-line address/patent dates marking. It has a half magazine and highly figure and checkered forearm and straight grip stock. The buttstock is fitted with a crescent trapdoor buttplate. The factory letter lists this rifel with a half octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock, globe and peep sights, half magazine, casehardened receiver and $5.00 engraving when it was received in the warehouse on October 2, 1879 and shipped on October 20.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle retains 30% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. There is some minor pitting on the barrel. The wood is also fine showing a tiny missing chip from the forearm, a gap between the forend cap and forearm, some minor dings and scratches and a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A John Ulrich singed engraved Model 1873 rifle linked to a well accomplished U.S. Ordnance officer who is associated greatly with Gen. Custer's 1876 expedition to the Little BigHorn that will be a great addition to any Winchester or Western collection.

Engraved New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 23 of 1082)

Engraved New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic Lever Action Carbine with Letter from George Madis

Volcanic Lever Action Carbine with 16-inch barrel manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company circa 1859. The carbine has a blued barrel, silver-plated receiver and crescent buttplate, and casehardened lever and hammer. The stock is oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. The top and sides of the receiver and edges of the buttplate are decorated with open scrollwork, simple floral designs and border work. The engraving is period correct and similar but not identical to the typical factory engraving on Volcanic firearms. The carbine is accompanied by a letter from Winchester expert George Madis. The Madis letter states that all the carbine's major parts are original, all the internal assembly/serial numbers match and that the barrel blue and silver plating are original. Madis describes the engraving on the receiver and buttplate as "early style engraving" and notes that it is of slightly higher quality than is typically found on New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic firearms. The barrel is the early "Type I" style with full rib and nickel-silver cone front sight. The top flat is lightly stamped "PATENT NEW HAVEN. CONN." in a single line. The receiver has a dovetail mounted rear sight with elevation wheel. The hammer has fine knurling on the spur. The serial number is stamped on the right side of the loading lever and on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock. The assembly number "14" is stamped on the right side of the lower tang and on the shank of all three of the hand-fitted tang screws. "H" is stamped on the left side of the tang ahead of the serial number and "X" is stamped on the left side of the lever. The stock is stamped "14" underneath the buttplate and "14" is stamped inside the buttplate heel. The top buttplate screw is brass and appears to be a period replacement. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Class: Antique

Very good. The blue finish on the barrel and integral magazine has an artificial dull blue on the exposed flats but retains traces of original blue in protected areas. The New Haven Arms Co. legend is light but legible. The replated silver-plated finish on the receiver and crescent buttplate is tarnished but remains at least 85% intact. The engraved scrollwork, floral decorations and borders on the receiver and buttplate are all professionally recut. Nearly all of the muted case colors are present on the hammer. The case colors on the lever have faded to a silver-gray patina on contact points. The replacement stock has several areas of varnish loss and dents on the both sides of the wrist but remains in very good condition overall.

This is a fine example of an original Model 1866 Winchester musket that was manufactured in 1870. This is a mid production Third Model with the block serial number (49718) stamped behind the trigger. The 1866 muskets are a very rare rifle as they were the least popular of the Model 1866s with most being sold to foreign customers, especially to South America. This scarce example as noted was evidently sold to Belgium as it carries the Belgium proofs on the left side of the barrel and receiver. They consist of a "Asterisk/A", "Crown/R", "Perron", and the "Crown/E.L.G." proof from the Liege Proof House in Belgium. The receiver also has the same small "Asterisk/A" proof. It has the earlier recessed barrel, with the top of the barrel marked with the Second Pattern markings of "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS, NEW HAVEN CT/ KING'S IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MATCH 29,1866, OCTOBER 16 1860". It has the correct 27 inch round barrel with the magazine tube that stops about 2 3/4 inches from the muzzle allowing this rifle to have a full 17 round capacity. The barrel is fitted with three barrel bands, along with the "First Pattern large sling loops mounted on the middle band and lower buttstock area. As noted it has the Third Pattern receiver with the block serial number located behind the trigger, original rimfire firing pin with the Second Pattern breech bolt with the crosslot on the front end, early trigger with the mainspring screw on the end with the early beveled loading gate. It has the Henry pattern two position folding rear sight with the staff marked 2-8 (200-800 yards) with the 900 yard sighting notch on top. It is fitted with a straight grain American walnut stock with 3/4 length forearm. The buttstock has the musket style brass buttplate with the sliding trap door with an original four section brass tipped cleaning rod.

Class: Antique

Fine overall with 30% of the original blue finish still remaining on the barrel and magazine tube with the majority of the blue in the protected areas under the forend and the front end of the magazine tube, with the balance of the metal showing a light brown/gray mixed patina. The entire receiver, side plates and buttplate are all very fine with an excellent attractive dark aged yellow patina finish overall. The loading lever and hammer both have browned out with hints of finish. The buttstock and forend are both very fine showing a nice original matching medium brown oil finish mixed with some minor handling marks and scratches overall. The wood to metal fit is tight. This is a fine example of a Winchester Model 1866 musket.
