Excellent Winchester Model 1873 Musket

The musket has the distinctive 30-inch round barrel with full length forearm secured by three barrel bands, steel block front sight that serves as a mount for a socket bayonet, sling swivels on the middle barrel band and stock and military style folding leaf rear sight. The musket has a carbine style buttplate with sliding brass trapdoor. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, receiver and dust cover have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The loading gate is fire blue. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are casehardened with muted case colors. The stock and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped, "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN Ct./KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber, "44 W.C.F.", is roll-stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped, " - MODEL. 1873. - " in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. "44 CAL" is roll-stamped across the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator in script letters. The serial number is stamped in script between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. This musket is one of a 700 gun lot of Model 1873 Muskets in the 569,000-57,1000 serial number range that were shipped to Central America in September 1903. In the late 1950s, some of these muskets were discovered in storage in Nicaragua and imported to the U.S. These muskets were generally unissued and unfired and remained in nearly new condition. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent. This musket is all original and retains 97% of the original blue and color casehardened finish with very minor storage wear. The blue components have nearly all of the blue finish intact with a few scattered, light, scratches and handling marks on the barrel bands, receiver and side plates. The hammer, lever and trigger have nearly all of the muted case colors intact. The buttplate has some finish loss on the heel and toe. The loading gate retains nearly 100% of the fire blue finish. The oil-finished walnut stock and forearm are in excellent plus condition and retain 98% of the original oil finish. Wear is limited to a few storage bruises located primarily on the left side of the forearm. This is an excellent example of a scarce Winchester Model 1873 Musket in near new condition.

Manufactured in 1915 and subsequently embellished. The accompanying factory letter only lists the original order number 13647. No other information was available. The sides of the receiver have a very well done floral scroll etching incorporating a hunter firing his rifle at a charging bear on the left side, and a running dog on the right side. Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with Factory Letter

Lot # 2004 (Sale Order: 5 of 879)

Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with Factory Letter

The included Cody letter describes this Model 1873 as: "Rifle, 381 caliber, Plain trigger, Sights: Lyman and Beach sights" and "1/2 magazine" and states that it was shipped from Winchester on August 5, 1885 (No mention of half octagon barrel, but appears correct). The rifle has the Third Model receiver with integral dust cover rail. The dust cover has serrated edges. Fitted with a gold-plated Beach folding combination front sight, buckhorn sporting style rear sight and Lyman folding combination tang sight marked: "PAT. MAY.6/84" on the base. The stock and forearm are nicely grained American walnut with the Winchester high polish "extra finish" used on rifles with special order features. A small brass compass is hand fitted in the stock comb 1 1/2-inches in front of the buttplate. The top barrel flat has the two-line address/patent dates marking and "38 CAL." "38 CAL" is roll-stamped in script characters across the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number is roll-stamped in script numerals on the lower tang. It is very unusual to have special order sights identified in Winchester or Cody factory letters.

Class: Antique

Very fine. 97% of original the blue is present on the barrel, forearm cap, and dust cover. The loading gate has 95% of the original nitre blue finish. The receiver and side plates retain most of the blue finish with only very minor handling wear. The magazine tip, hammer, trigger and lever have nearly all of the casehardened finish. The buttplate shows storage wear and retains about half of the mottled blue-gray finish. The stock and forearm are very fine with 90% of the high polish Winchester "Extra Finish". The stock shows a few minor scuff marks and shallow dents primarily on the right wrist. The compass on the stock comb is a period, obviously novice, installation and does not detract significantly from the overall quality of this scarce and well-documented, special order Winchester Model 1873 rifle.

Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Rifle

Lot # 2005 (Sale Order: 6 of 879)

Documented Extremely Rare Special Order Extra Heavy Barrel Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action with Factory Letter

The factory letter confirms the serial number was applied on November 16, 1888, and the rifle was received and shipped on November 26 in order 15447 with a .40-82 extra heavy octagon barrel and set trigger. It has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn sporting style rear sight with serrated edges. The receiver has a single set trigger, and the upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address and "40-82 W.C.F." The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "- MODEL 1886-". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the bottom of the receiver in two lines behind the trigger, and the serial number is stamped in script numerals between the tang screws. Very few extra heavy barrels were ordered on Winchester Model 1886 rifles. Model 1886 rifles with special order extra heavy barrels are extremely rare.

Class: Antique

Very fine. This rifle retains 97% factory quality blue and color casehardened finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine. The bolt and trigger have nearly all of the blue finish. The loading gate shows traces of wear but retains close to 95% of the fire blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate have close to 98% of the vivid case colors. The stock and forearm are very fine and retain 98% of the varnish with a few very insignificant storage marks. This is an outstanding example of a documented Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with special order single set trigger and rare extra heavy octagon barrel.

Rare Documented, Winchester 1873 "One of One Thousand" 1st Model

Lot # 2006 (Sale Order: 7 of 879)

Extremely Rare Documented, Winchester First Model 1873 "One of One Thousand" Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This is an exceptional example of a Winchester One of One Thousand Model 1873 Rifle with extensive documentation. Winchester manufactured 136 One of One Thousand Model 1873 rifles between 1875 and 1879. A letter of evaluation of this rifle by Winchester expert R.L. Wilson states that only about 30 of these rifles had been located by collectors and historians. In 1950 as part of the promotion for the movie "WINCHESTER 73", the Winchester Repeating Arms Company attempted to identify the surviving One of One Thousand rifles. This rifle is complete with a copy of a letter dated January 28, 1953, from Winchester to Norman L. Patten of Detroit, Michigan, notifying Mr. Patten that: "rifle No. 18070 is one of the very rare "One of One Thousand Model 73's". The rifle is accompanied by a letter from the Winchester Gun Museum dated 1971 and a letter from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center dated 1977 that describe the rifle's features and verify that it is listed in Winchester factory ledgers as a "1 of 1000" rifle. The Buffalo Bill letter states: "The original Winchester Records housed in our Museum, describe Model 1873, Serial Number 18070 as a rifle, 1/2 octagon barrel, set trigger, 4X checkered stock, Pacific Buckhorn sights, casehardened, 1 of 1000, swiveled, engraved. It was received in the warehouse on February 26, 1876, and shipped February 28, 1876". This rifle is also listed in the Winchester warehouse ledger reproduced on pages 375 and 376 of "Winchester's New Model of 1873", Vol. 2 by James D. Gordon. This rifle has what Gordon identifies as "Fourth Style" markings and engraving on page 390 of his book. "One of One Thousand" is engraved in script letters on the top barrel flat of the 24-inch half-round/half-octagon barrel reading toward the receiver. The "One of One Thousand" marking is bordered by dot and scallop engraving with an engraved flourish next to the rear sight. The sides of the barrel are engraved with deeply cut scrollwork on a punch-dot background. Silver bands are inlaid at the barrel breech and muzzle. The muzzle has four engraved scrolls on a punch-dot background. The barrel has a gold-plated Beach folding combination globe and post front sight and a early style, 2 1/2-inch, Sporting Rear Sight with knurled edges and five step elevator. The R.L. Wilson letter states that half-round/half-octagon barrels and short magazines are very rare on Model 1873 One of One Thousand rifles. The rifle has the first style receiver with grooved dust cover guides and dust cover with checkered oval finger grip. The receiver has a single set-trigger. A folding graduated peep sight is mounted on the upper receiver tang. The hammer has bordered knurling on the spur. Factory eyelets for sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. The Wilson letter notes that sling swivels are rare on One of One Thousand rifles. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed steel sling swivel with brass tip. The stock and forearm are deluxe, highly figured, 4X, fancy grain walnut with early style Winchester checkered panels and a piano finish. Wilson's letter states that the "XXXX" marking is stamped on the left side of the lower tang and visible when the stock is removed. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang behind the lever latch. The forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The loading gate has a niter blue finish. The barrel, magazine, rear sight, tang sight and trigger are Winchester blue. The sock and forearm have a semi-matt piano finish. The Model 1873 One of One Thousand rifle is the best known of all Winchester rifles. One of One Thousand rifles are considered by experts to be the ultimate rarities in Winchester collecting. In addition to the Wilson Winchester Museum and Cody Museum letters, this rifle is accompanied by a list of all of the owners from 1950-1977. The most prominent collectors to own this spectacular rifle were John R. Woods and subsequently Robert M. Lee. The rifle was listed by serial number in the Oct. 1950 issue of American Rifleman (“The End of a Search” by Bill Depperman, page 38) as being purchased by E. Ames Alden of Boston in 1880. A photocopy of this article is included. Also included is a photocopy of a letter written by Alden’s son, Charles, circa 1950, which further explains that this rifle “was used for several years during vacations to the Adriondacks and many deer were killed with it.” The gun was left to Charles after his father passed away in 1887.

Winchester - 1866

Lot # 2007 (Sale Order: 8 of 879)

Late Production Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle with Scarce Round Barrel and Saddle Ring Carbine Receiver

This is a fine example of a very late production Winchester Model 1866, brass frame lever action rifle manufactured in 1879. An interesting rifle in that the factory used a 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine receiver casting where they removed the saddle ring staple, plugged the holes and finished it as a standard rifle. It has the less common full length "round" barrel combined with the full length magazine. Additionally, it is fitted with a set of later loop sling swivel bases on the forearm nose cap and toe area of the buttstock. The barrel has the two-line Winchester address/Kings Patent markings and, it is fitted with a Winchester half-nickel front sight blade and adjustable sporting style rear sight. The rifle has the distinctive all brass receiver and side plates with the distinctive flares at the front end where it meets the walnut forend. The serial number is marked on the rear area of the lower tang behind the lever latch. It is fitted with the factory straight grain walnut stock with a steel buttplate with brass trapdoor compartment. It does not have the cleaning rod inside.

Class: Antique

Very good plus with 20% of the original blued finish remaining on the metal parts overall with more finish in the protected areas under the forend. The receiver has an old polished appearance that has now mellowed and taken on a subdued look with some heavier scratches on the left side of the receiver. The side plates look original to the rifle and are nice and tight. The stock and forearm have been revarnished (but not sanded) some time ago and have now taken on a very nice original looking appearance showing minor/light handling marks and scratches on the sides. Mechanically fine. A very nice looking Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle.

Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Takedown

Lot # 2008 (Sale Order: 9 of 879)

Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Takedown Extra Light Weight Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The factory letter indicates this rifle was received in the warehouse and shipped September 25, 1912, as order number 379828. The letter confirms the rifle had the following features: rifle, takedown, extra light 22 inch round nickel-steel barrel, plain trigger adjusted for "pull light as consistent with safety," checkered pistol grip stock with shotgun butt and hard rubber buttplate, half magazine, a Lyman #21 receiver peep sight, rear sight filler block, and "W.H.V." front sight. It has the standard markings, a dovetailed blade front sight with folding white bead, flat folding two leaf rear sight and a receiver mounted Lyman peep sight. The stock and forearm have multi-point checkering, a Winchester hard rubber grip cap and buttplate. Both have some attractive figure. The trigger is not exceptionally light and breaks cleanly. "529" is marked in the upper tang recess on the stock and is also on the left side of the lower tang followed by "F R XX." The left side of the upper tang has "17" and a triangle with an "I."

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine overall. The barrel and magazine retain 80% of the faded original blue finish. The takedown collar and receiver retain 60% of the original blue finish. The grip cap and some of the high edges have gray and brown patina and there are some small patches of slight pitting. The lever and hammer mostly retain subdued case colors. There are some minor marks throughout. The wood is fine and has much of the original varnish remaining with a few areas flaking, some small dings and scratches. The buttplate has a chip at the toe. Mechanically excellent and the markings are crisp.

Exceptional Winchester Model 1873 Musket with Bayonet and Factory Letter

Winchester Model 1873 Musket manufactured in 1903. The accompanying factory letter lists this musket in .44 caliber when it was received in the warehouse on August 25, 1903, and shipped on September 18, 1903. The musket has the distinctive 30 inch barrel with full-length forearm, three barrel bands, block front sight base that serves as a lug for a socket bayonet, military style folding leaf rear sight and carbine buttplate. Sling swivels are mounted on the middle barrel band and the stock. The Third Model frame has an integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The bayonet socket and blade are not marked. This musket is one of approximately 700 Model 1873 Muskets shipped from Winchester to Nicaragua in September 1903. Some of these muskets were apparently never uncrated. Exceptional New Haven Arms Company Volcanic

Lot # 2011 (Sale Order: 12 of 879)

Exceptional New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

Volcanic lever action carbine manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1857. This carbine is in near new condition and is accompanied by a inventory description by Winchester expert R.L. Wilson. Some unsold New Haven Arms Volcanic carbines remained in the Winchester factory until the late 1930s or early 1940s when they were sold to Winchester employees for .50 cents apiece. This carbine is probably one of those guns. The carbine has the distinctive "Type I" octagon barrel with integral 20-shot magazine and brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the New Haven Arms marking: "PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854". Traces of the earlier "VOLCANIC REPEATING ARMS CO." marking are partially visible above the crisp patent markings. The New Haven Arms Company omitted the Volcanic markings after it was established by Oliver Winchester in April 1857. The number "9" (possible a police department rack number) is stamped on the bottom of the frame behind the carrier block. The barrel has a half moon nickel silver front sight. A rear sight with round elevation wheel is mounted on the top of the receiver behind the ejection port. The rear sight has a fiery niter blue finish. The hammer is color casehardened. The carrier block, lever, trigger and bolt have a high polish blue finish. All of the screws are bright and appear to have never been finished. The stock is straight grain American walnut stock with a varnished piano finish. Most of the New Haven Arms Volcanic carbines had engraved receivers and buttplates. Carbines with plain polished fames are rare. This carbine was formerly part of the Robert M. Lee collection and is accompanied by an inventory sheet prepared by R.L Wilson and dated 21-25 April 1997 that describes the carbine. The serial number ("3068") is stamped on the stock, buttplate and both buttplate screws.

Class: Antique

Excellent. 95% of the original blue finish is present on the barrel and integral magazine. The New Haven Arms patent markings are crisp. The rear sight has 90% plus of the niter blue finish. Significant amounts of the delicate, high polish blue remain on the bottom of the carrier block and bolt. Traces of blue finish are present on the lever and trigger. The hammer retains 85% of the original case colors. The brass receiver and crescent buttplate are in excellent, untouched condition with a beautiful aged patina. The side plate joints are perfect and the receiver and buttplate are free from scratches and handling marks. The screw heads are in perfect condition with a good looking dove gray patina. The stock is in excellent condition and retains most of the high polish varnish. Wear is limited to a few scattered and numerous scattered very insignificant handling marks. This nearly new New Haven Arms Volcanic carbine is one of the very best examples of these rare and historically significant firearms existent. It would be a stand-out piece in the fines collection of Winchester lever action rifles. Provenance: The Robert M. Lee Collection.

Special order, deluxe, Model 1876 rifles like this example are scarce and highly desirable firearms.

Class: Antique

Very fine. This rifle retains 50% plus of the blue finish. The Winchester legend and caliber designation are sharp. The loading gate has a blue-gray patina. The rear sight leaf and base show pitting and age discoloration and while the rear sight is correct for the rifle it may be a replacement. The case colors on the forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, hammer and lever have faded to a mottled silver-gray patina. The buttplate has a dark patina with patches of age discoloration. The deluxe highly figured walnut stock has a repair visible in wrist with recut checkering. The forearm is fine overall. The checkered panels show light-moderate handling wear. This is a good looking example of a scarce, deluxe, special order, Winchester "Centennial Model" 1876 rifle.

Excellent. 95% plus of the original blue finish is present on the barrel, magazine, barrel bands, receiver and dust cover. The receiver has some edge wear on the high points and some scattered and very insignificant spots of age discoloration. The top of the dust cover rail shows some light scuff marks and there is some finish loss around the edge of the upper tang sight screw. The loading gate has 90% of the original nitre blue finish. The hammer, lever and trigger retain 85% plus of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The case colors on the crescent buttplate have faded slight but are 75%; the edge of the buttplate heel is slivered with some tiny spots of age discoloration. The barrel and receiver markings are sharp. The stock and forearm are excellent with nearly all of the original piano finish. Wear is limited to a few very insignificant storage marks. This is a truly outstanding example of a rare and possibly one-of-a-kind special order, Winchester saddle ring carbine from one of the finest collections of Winchester and Colt firearms. J. Ulrich Signed Engraved Winchester Model 1894 Exhibition Rifle

Lot # 2016 (Sale Order: 17 of 879)

Exquisite and Well-Documented John Ulrich Signed Engraved, Gold Inlaid and Relief Carved Factory Exhibition Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter: Winchester's Factory Exhibition 1894 Rifle for Over 20 Years!

Offered here is a fully factory documented John Ulrich signed Winchester exhibition masterpiece that has been well-documented over the years and is a remarkable piece of Winchester history; It is one of the most elegant and high conditioned John Ulrich signed engraved Model 1894s you will ever find! The rifle has been featured on the cover of N. Flayderman & Co., Inc. catalog no. 103 (October 1979) and R.L. Wilson's "Winchester: An American Legend" on pages 122 and 340 and "Winchester Engraving" on page 171. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a half octagon barrel in .38-55 caliber, plain trigger, fancy pistol grip stock with style B carving, half magazine and $50.00 engraving when it was received in the warehouse on October 6, 1903, and originally shipped on February 29, 1904. The letter also provides several return and shipping dates, indicating that this rifle was a factory display piece from approximately February 1904 to December 1918. For over 20 years this rifle returned to the factory from many exhibitions throughout the country. These shipping dates coincide with multiple major events, including the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (3/30/1904-12/1/1904) and Panama-Pacific International Exposition (2/1915-12/1915). Winchester participated in both of these expositions. Other return dates reference certain individuals, including Guy B. Harrison who sold Winchester and Remington firearms in Texas, I.L. Lippencott who was likely a Winchester employee, and Winchester Vice President F.G. Drew (who later became President). Photocopies of the factory ledger are also included. According to Wilson's research, only two Model 1894s with a $50.00 engraving and only two Model 1894s with a B carving were found in the factory records. The Winchester Engraving" on page 129 and "Winchester Engraving" on page 135. The exceptional engraving features rarely encountered motifs found on John Ulrich guns. The scrollwork depicts grape vines instead of the more traditional fine scrolls. On the right side is a gold outlined oval panel of three elk in a forest. On the left side is a gold outlined circular panel of a single bighorn sheep. The background and shading are remarkable, giving the vignettes a relief engraved appearance. Additional scrollwork is found on the buttplate tang, hammers, lever, breech link and forend cap. Profuse gold inlaid line borders are featured on the frame, buttplate, forend cap and barrel. The breech link additional has an uncommon gold inlaid grape leaf. John Ulrich signed his masterpiece on the lower tang: "J. ULRICH." The original 38-55 caliber barrel has been changed out by the factory with a 30 WCF part octagon tapered "pencil barrel." The barrel has the Winchester "WP" and "P" proofs, dovetailed blade front sight, the Model 94 legend on the upper left flat and two-line address marked on the upper right flat. The barrel lacks provisions for a rear sight. The upper tang has the three-line Model/patent date marking. The underside of the frame has the serial number. The highly figured forearm and pistol grip stock are elaborately carved scarce leaf pattern that perfectly matches the engraving. Additional carving is featured behind the lever, an area that is usual left untouched. Provenance: Norm Flayderman and Mac McCroskie collections.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Exceptionally fine. The rifle retains 90% plus factory blue finish showing some thinning to a brown. The hammer, lever and buttplate have faded to a gray mixed with mostly silvered out case colors. The wood is very fine showing some minor pressure dents and scratches, a crisp carving and retaining nearly all of the original varnish. Mechanically excellent. An exquisite factory documented John Ulrich signed engraved Model 1894 used for over 20 years by Winchester as an exhibition gun that is a must have for the serious Winchester collector. The accompanying two page factory letter well spells out the extraordinary history of this highly embellished exhibition gold inlaid factory engraved Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle!

Special Order Winchester - 1886 Rifle in 40-82

Lot # 2020 (Sale Order: 21 of 879)

Special Order Antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle

This is an example of an early special order Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle with "two" special order feature as manufactured in 1892. These two noted features are that it is equipped with a "half-round/half-octagon" 26 inch barrel, chambered in 40-82 WCF and a "button" or half-magazine. This rifle is standard in all other respects. The rifle has a Winchester blue barrel, magazine tube, bolt assembly and trigger with a niter blue loading gate. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. It has a straight grained American walnut stock and forend with a varnish finish. The barrel has a standard bead front sight with a buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight with serrated edges with the screw-adjustable center piece. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped in two lines with: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" with caliber "40-82 W.C.F." marked in front of the receiver ring. It has been fitted with an early narrow set of sling swivels; one dovetail mounted on the underside of the barrel with the rear sling swivel mounted approximately two inches behind the lower tang. The patent dates, "1884 and 1885" are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger with the serial number stamped in script numerals at the end of the lower tang. It is rare to find a Winchester 1886 rifle with "two" special order features, as the majority of the time if the previous owner bothered to order any special features, they usually choose several.

Class: Antique

Fine with 50% of the blued finish remaining overall with the round portion of the barrel having taken on an aged purplish/blue tint with minor light nicks and dings overall on the exposed part of the barrel. The receiver, hammer and loading lever retain 25% of their case colors with slightly more in the protected areas. The stock and forend are in very good condition with most of a revarnish finish remaining overall with the balance having flaked off. Both show minor handling marks and light pressure dents from actual use. A scarce early Winchester Model 1886 rifle with two special order features.

Special Order Winchester "Open Top" Model 1876 Rifle

Lot # 2021 (Sale Order: 22 of 879)

Scarce "Open-Top" Special Order Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Documentation

Manufactured in 1878. This rifle has the scarce first model receiver without any provisions for the dust cover, thus giving the name open top. Dust covers started to appear around serial number 1600, usually only on special orders by the customer and later, by serial number 3200 they were a regular feature on the rifle. With this late of a serial number, this was probably a special order that requested it not be fitted with the dust cover. The included Cody Firearm Records Office serial number verification lists this rifle with a round barrel, plain trigger, Vernier and windage sights and short magazine when it was received in the warehouse on August 23, 1878, and shipped the next day. The rifle has non-factory post front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight, special order half magazine and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with trapdoor (cleaning rod not included). The comb and buttplate have provisions for a now removed sight. The barrel nor the cartridge elevator are marked with any caliber markings. The barrel has the two-line address/patent dates markings, the upper tang is marked "MODEL 1876," and the serial number is marked on the lower tang.

Class: Antique

Good. The rifle has a mottled gray patina with limited traces of original blue finish and case colors in the protected areas of the bottom of frame. There is some minor pitting mostly on the left side plate. The wood is fair with a large chunk of wood missing from the forearm (right side), a small hairline crack in the wrist and numerous minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.

Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring 45-70 Lever Action Carbine

Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine originally manufactured c. 1908. This carbine has a standard 22 inch round barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has the standard block-mounted, nickel-silver, front sight located ahead of the barrel band and folding leaf rear sight graduated to "20". The left side of the receiver has a staple-mounted saddle ring. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. Factory eyelets for detachable sling swivels are mounted on the lower barrel band and belly of buttstock. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, receiver, bolt, loading gate, trigger and carbine style buttplate are blued, and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884, JAN. 20. 1885" ahead of the lower barrel band. The caliber: "45-70." is roll-stamped on the upper left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. Oval Winchester "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped, "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The lower tang is roll-stamped with "1884/1885" dates behind the trigger and the serial number "147512A" is stamped in ahead of the rear tang screw.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. Nearly all the factory quality blue is present on the barrel and barrel bands. The blue on the magazine tube has faded slightly. The receiver, bolt and loading gate have close to 95% of the blue finish. The buttplate shows typical handling wear but retains close to 90% of the blue finish. The hammer and lever have 80% of the vivid case colors. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The stock and forearm show light-moderate handling wear and are in very good overall condition. Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbines are scarce in any condition. Because Winchester carbines were typically intended to be "working guns" they typically saw hard use and are very difficult to obtain in very fine or better condition. This is a solid representative example of a Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring 45-70 Carbine.
