Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Rifle

Lot # 3000 (Sale Order: 1 of 918)

Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Scarce Plain Pistol Grip Stock

The Winchester letter describes this rifle, as: "Rifle, 40/65, Octagon barrel, Plain trigger" and "Plain pistol grip" and shipped on September 21, 1891. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The barrel has a Lyman "Hunting" front sight with colored bead and a buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges and screw-adjustable center piece. A Lyman folding combination rear sight with coarsely knurled stem is mounted on the receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "40-65 W.C.F." is roll-stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number is stamped in script numerals between the tang screws. A plain pistol grip stock is a rarely seen special order feature on Winchester Model 1886 rifles.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel has 85% original blue finish with some very minor edge wear. The colored bead in the front sight blade is broken. The blue finish on the bottom of the magazine between the barrel band and the receiver is thin with some scattered light pitting and patches of age discoloration. There are traces of cold blue on some of the pitted areas. The bolt, extractor and trigger have 98% of the blue finish. 60% fire blue finish remains on the loading gate. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever retain 90% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The crescent buttplate has 70% of the faded case colors. The forearm and pistol grip stock are very good with 80% of the original finish. Wear is limited to a few relatively minor scratches and handling marks. This is a very fine example of a documented Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with scarce, special order, plain pistol grip stock.

Early Production Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 3 of 918)

Early Production Three Digit Serial Number New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

This is a desirable early production, three digit serial numbered Henry rifle that was manufactured in 1862. The rifle has the early first style brass receiver featuring a rear sight dovetail slot holding a first style folding ladder sight graduated to 1,000 yards and small "V" sight notches. The barrel is fitted with a German silver front sight and is marked on the top flat "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT' BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT." and the serial number at the breech. The barrel lacks a dovetail slot for a rear sight. Matching serial numbers are found on the barrel, tang and buttplate screws and buttstock. The straight grain, American walnut stock has the first style brass buttplate with rounded heel. The rifle lacks the special order sling swivel and screw fastened hook for a sling hook fitted to the left side of the stock and barrel which were not standard features on Henry rifles until early in 1864. Oliver Winchester had limited success marketing the Henry rifle to the Ordnance Department. However, from the start of regular production in March 1862, the rifle was favorably received by federal soldiers who appreciated the firepower offered by the 15-shot lever-action repeating rifle.

Class: Antique

About good. The receiver is good and exhibits an attractively aged patina. The bright metal surfaces show a few scattered areas of heavy marks in the barrel extension. The refinished stock is fair showing a couple cracks along the grain, a small missing chip near the toe and a few minor dings. The action needs work as extractor is missing and the hammer does not hold at full cock.

Volcanic Lever Action Navy Pistol from the Winchester Arms

Lot # 3005 (Sale Order: 6 of 918)

Exceptional Volcanic Lever Action Navy Pistol from the Winchester Arms Collection/Cody Firearms Museum

This is a extremely fine example of a historic Navy size lever action pistol manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., c. 1856. The pistol is complete with a letter from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center that states it was formerly part of the Winchester Gun Museum and was deaccessioned from the Winchester Arms Collection of the Cody Firearms Museum and sold at auction in June 1991. The pistol has the distinctive blue octagon barrel with integral magazine, brass receiver and casehardened lever with finger hole. The barrel has a brass cone front sight. A fixed rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the receiver. The casehardened hammer has a knurled spur. The two piece flat bottom walnut grips have a high polish varnish finish. The top barrel flat is roll stamped "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854" in three lines. The barrel legend indicates that the pistol was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. before the firm was reorganized as the New Haven Arms Co. by Oliver Winchester in April 1857. The serial number is stamped on the right side of the lever, the right side of the butt underneath the grip and on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The Volcanic pistols and carbines were revolutionary firearms which combined a primed self contained rocket ball cartridge, integral magazine and repeating lever action. The Volcanic pistols and carbines drew shirt maker Oliver Winchester into firearms manufacturing. The Volcanic lever action and integral magazines were refined to serve as the basis for the successful New Haven Arms Co., Henry lever action rifles and the Winchester Model 1866, Model 1873 and Model 1876 rifles. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. The barrel and integral magazine retain at least 90% of the original blue finish. The barrel has some very minor edge wear at the muzzle and numerous shallow wide dents present on both sides adjacent to the receiver. The blue has developed a slight plum colored patina. Most of the niter blue finish is present on protected areas of the cartridge elevator and bolt. The hammer and lever retain 80% of the original case colors which have faded to a mottled gray-brown patina. The brass frame and side plates are in fine condition with a few scattered handling marks (removal of the grips exposed much remaining silver plating). There are three very small dents in the top of the right side plate but the joints of both side plates are tight. The follower is a period replacement. The grips are very fine and retain nearly 90% of the original varnish finish. The grips have minor handling marks; the right grip has slightly more wear with a shallow dent next to the screw escutcheon, a small chip at the back edge and finish loss along the heel. Wear on the left grip is limited to some minor handling marks and some varnish wear along the heel. The barrel markings and serial numbers are sharp. This is a historic example of a historically significant Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. Lever Action Navy Pistol from the Winchester Gun Museum. It would be hard to improve on this outstanding pistol.

Exceptional Deluxe Factory Engraved Silver Plated New Haven Arms

Lot # 3006 (Sale Order: 7 of 918)

Exceptional Deluxe Factory Engraved Silver Plated New Haven Arms Company First Model Henry Lever Action Rifle

Deluxe early production Henry Lever-Action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in January 1863. The rifle has the early Henry features which include a rear sight dovetail on the receiver, small diameter magazine follower, straight follower cut in the receiver, first style buttplate with rounded heel, and hand fitted buttplate and upper tang screws. The barrel has the nickel-silver flat back rear sight blade introduced about serial number 1,200 and Third Style folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch and no elevator bar stop screw. The buttplate has a hinged butt trap door and the trap contains the four piece jointed hickory cleaning rod furnished with early production Henry rifles. The rifle is not fitted with a sling swivel and sling hook loop which were optional on early production Henry rifles. The receiver, upper tang and buttplate heel feature the early style New Haven Arms factory engraving with large scrolls and floral spays on a punch-dot background and double line scalloped borders. Very similar factory engraving on Henry rifles serial numbers, 1100, 1441,1449 and 1570 is illustrated on pages 20, 21, 22 and 26 of "WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. This style of engraving is believed to have been executed by Samuel Hodgson who did most factory engraving for the New Haven Arms Company. The brass (gunmetal) receiver and crescent buttplate are silver plated, the barrel and integral 15-shot magazine are blue and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock is well figured select grade walnut with a high polish piano finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CT." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "1495" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and receiver, on left side of the lower receiver tang beneath the stock, in the upper tang inlet of the stock, on the inside of the buttplate below the lower buttplate screw hole, on the shanks of both hand fitted buttplate screws and on all three of the tang screws. Most Henry rifles manufactured during the Civil War were intended for sale to individual Federal soldiers or for military contracts; deluxe factory engraved rifles with special finishes are rare.

Class: Antique

Very fine. This rifle is all original and retains 70% of the original blue and 90% original silver-plated finish. The blue on the barrel and magazine has some minor edge and high-point wear but remains at least 85% intact. The New Haven Arms Co., legend and serial number are sharp. Wear is confined primarily to contact points of the buttplate. The scroll engraving on the receiver and buttplate is sharp. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have faded to a mottled gray patina. The select grade walnut stock retains nearly all of the high polish piano finish and is very fine with a few scattered, and very minor handling marks and scratches. This is an exceptional example of an early production, deluxe factory engraved and silver plated Henry rifle.

Factory Engraved Winchester Model 92 Deluxe Carbine

Lot # 3010 (Sale Order: 11 of 918)

Exceptionally Rare Special Order Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 92 Lever Action Carbine with Pistol Grip Stock and George Madis Letter

Offered here is a rarity in Winchester collecting: a factory engraved deluxe version of the Model 92 carbine with several rarely encountered special order features as manufactured in 1923. The accompanying three page letter from Winchester expert and author George Madis outlines some of the special order features found on this gun. Madis concluded, "I have carefully examined this rare deluxe 1892 inside and out, and have determined it as all original as made by Winchester in 1923." The rifle has a factory style 9 engraving consisting of broad floral scrollwork on a punch dot background, wavy line and dot borders and a vignette of a standing deer on the right side. Additional accents of scrollwork are found on the underside of the receiver by the serial number and near each Winchester factory oval proof found on the barrel and receiver at the breech. Note that the proof on the receiver is offset to accommodate the engraving. The style 9 engraving is illustrated in Winchester's "Highly Finished Arms" catalog as reprinted in R.L. Wilson's "The Book of Winchester Engraving" on page 219. The checkered deluxe pistol grip stock is rarely found on carbines and features a high gloss lacquer finish, Winchester hard rubber grip cap and rifle buttplate. A rifle buttplate is rarely seen on carbines. Matching assembly numbers (1119) are found on the left side of the upper tang, stock inlet, inside of the buttplate and buttstock under the buttplate. The buttplate and pistol grip stock were therefore assembled at the factory and are original. The Lyman front and receiver sights are also seldom found on carbines, but their originality on this gun is verified by the fact that no rear sight slot is cut in the barrel. The base for the front sight was forged as part of the barrel, which was standard on the Model 92. The magazine tube support ring was standard on the small caliber Model 92s. The left side of the barrel has the two-line address/patent dates marking followed by the two-line nickel steel marking and "32 WCF." The upper tang is stamped with the three-line model/trade mark information.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. The carbine retains 85% plus original blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown. The wood is also very fine showing some minor pressure dents and scratches, a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering and retaining most of the finish. Mechanically excellent. A wonderful example of a factory engraved Winchester deluxe Model 92 carbine with the added bonus of several rarely encountered special order features. This carbine has it all!

Introduced in 1879 and equipped with a standard 26-inch barrel, Model 1876 rifles chambered for the .50-95 Winchester Express cartridge are some of the most desirable of the Model 1876 "Centennial" rifles.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel and magazine retain 70% original blue with traces of light pitting on the muzzle and magazine cap and some edge wear and spots of surface discoloration along the sides of the barrel. The blue finish on the bottom of the magazine has developed a plum blue patina. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are crisp. The dust cover retains 60% of the high polish blue finish with handling wear along the edges. Significant amounts of blue finish are present on the bolt. The loading gate has 60% of the nitre blue finish intact. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger and lever retain 70% of the original casehardened finish. The case colors on the buttplate show more wear and are 25% intact with some light pitting on the buttplate heel and toe. The nicely figured refinished walnut stock and forearm remain in very fine condition and retain more than 90% of the high polish varnish. Wear is limited to several small spots of finish flaking and a few scattered and very minor handling marks. The checkered panels are sharp and show minimal handling wear. This is a very fine example of one of the rarest and most desirable variations of the Winchester Model 1876 rifle.

Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Takedown Rifle

Lot # 3012 (Sale Order: 13 of 918)

Rare and Exceptional Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Takedown Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1915 with factory engraving. According to Winchester author and expert George Madis, "Engraved Models 95 are very rare; by the time the model 95 was introduced the cost of engraving had become quite high." The engraving on this rifle consists of floral scrollwork on a punch dot background and is featured on the sides of the receiver. The right side of the receiver has an engraved bear in a lake scene. Winchester's "Highly Finished Arms" catalog as reprinted in R.L. Wilson's "The Book of Winchester Engraving" indicates that Winchester vignettes included a depiction of a bear (page 221) and factory bear scene engraved Model 95s are documented in Madis' "The Winchester Book" on pages 464, 466 469 472 and 476. The rifle has German silver blade and elevation adjustable rear sights, matted barrel and special order sling eyelets mounted on the underside of the barrel and buttstock. The left side of the barrel has the two-line nickel steel marking followed by ".30 GOVT.1903," the left side of the receiver has the two-line address/patent dates marking, the breech end of the barrel and receiver have a factory oval proof, and the upper tang has the three-line model/trade mark information. Mounted on a deluxe checkered forearm and straight grip stock with high gloss lacquer and trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included).

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. The rifle retains 85% plus bright original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina and numerous scratches on the buttplate. The wood is fine showing an old applied coat of varnish with a filled circular inlet for a now missing initial plate, some minor pressure dents and scratches and retaining most of the finish. The checkering is crisp overall. Mechanically excellent.

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Carbine Henry Bll Address

Lot # 3015 (Sale Order: 16 of 918)

Exceptional Peruvian Presentation Early Production Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Carbine with Desirable Henry Barrel Address

This Winchester Model 1866 carbine was manufactured in 1867. The left side plate is engraved with an inscription: "CORONEL BORGONO/with Complements of/JUAN G. MEIGGS." Justiniano Borgono, (1836-1921), was a Peruvian military officer and politician. He enlisted in the army in 1856 with the rank of lieutenant and fought in the Civil War initiated by General Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco’s in 1856-1858. He left the army after the civil war only to return to service at the beginning of the Pacific War, also known as the Guano and Salitre War (1879-1883). Borgono was promoted to the rank of colonel and was wounded in the right leg and taken prisoner while fighting in the Battle of San Juan and Chorrillos. Despite promising his captors to never again take up arms against the Chileans in exchange for being released, he nevertheless returned to the battlefield under the command of General Andre Caceres and was wounded again at the Battle of Huamachuco (July 10, 1883). Over the next several years, Borgono held several government positions, including minister of War and Navy. After the sudden death of President Morales Bermudez, Borgono assumed the presidency after the suspension of general elections on April 1,1894. As acting president, Borgono called for new elections for the office of president as well as all members of congress. The sole presidential candidate was Borgono’s old war buddy, General Caceres, who easily won and assumed power on August 10, 1894. For his efforts, Borgono was promoted to brigadier general. The elections were later seen as unconstitutional, and the election results were challenged by the opposition parties, thus initiating a civil war. Borgono fled to Argentina and took up farming. In 1901, he returned to Peru to participate in the Council of General Officials. The American brothers Juan and Henry Meiggs came to Peru in 1868 to build a railroad. Already successful railroad builders in Chile, the Meiggs brothers built several railway lines in Peru before Henry died in 1877. In Peru, the brothers were in over their heads and found themselves facing bankruptcy at the time when Henry suffered a stroke and died a few months later. Struggling to find a way out, they proposed printing their own money called “Meiggs’ bills.” A skeptical public rejected the idea. Before Henry’s death, the brothers published a book detailing the Peruvian railways from 1826 to 1871. It is therefore plausible that this carbine was given to Borgono by Juan Meigss as return for a favor or to elicit a favor. This early production carbine has the Second Model features which include: flared receiver at the junction with the forearm, single upper tang screw and internal receiver serial numbers. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the first style legend "HENRY'S-PATENT-OCT. 16. 1860/KING'S-PATENT-MARCH 29.1866" between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. In addition to the early Henry markings, this carbine has numerous early features which include: uncrowned muzzle, threaded magazine cap, barrel band with integral front sight, two-leaf rear sight with "5" and "3" elevation markings, unmarked cartridge elevator, indented loading gate secured by a single screw, small loading lever latch and Henry style buttplate with hinged trap. The hammer has borderless knurling on the spur, and the left side of the receiver has a staple mounted saddle ring. The barrel, magazine and barrel bands are blued, and the rear sight, hammer, lever and trigger are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are oil finished, straight grain American walnut. The serial number "17470" is stamped on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock, in the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the buttplate. The left side of the lower tang also has the letters “CO.” A non-Winchester number "11431" is stamped on the bottom of the lower tang behind the trigger; the significance of this number is unknown. A small slashed out “BP” crest is stamped on the lower tang just ahead of the lever latch.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. This carbine is all original and remains in exceptional condition for a early production Winchester Model 1866 saddle ring carbine. The barrel and magazine retain 75% of the original blue finish with traces of plum patina. The metal surfaces are smooth and the barrel legend is sharp. The upper barrel band has 70% of the bright original blue finish intact while the lower band has a silver-gray patina. The rear sight has crisp markings and retains nearly all of the case colors. The loading gate has 85% of the original nitre blue finish. Substantial amount of blue are present on the extractors. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 60% of the original muted case colors.

Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 3017 (Sale Order: 18 of 918)

Documented Winchester Factory Firearms Collection First Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Bennett Barrel Band and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1876, this is a rare first model of the Model 1873 carbine with a factory documented Bennett barrel band. This First Model 1873 Winchester Saddle Ring Carbine features the distinctive dust cover held in place by grooved guides on either side of the top of the receiver, checkered oval finger grip on top of the dust cover and the lever latch with the visible screw threads. The accompanying factory letter confirms the carbine configuration and it was received in the warehouse on January 31, 1878, and shipped on May 8, 1878, on order number 11778. This gun was part of a shipment of 991 carbines which fall within the serial number range of 16404-17403. The letter also confirms that this carbine was once part of the factory museum collection. According to museum records, the carbine has a Bennett barrel band, was one of the guns sunk in Hamburg Harbor, was originally sold to Chili, sent to Winchester by Ed Beumeister in June 1884 and later sold to Fenton of London in 1931. The Bennett barrel band, which is the forward band, was designed by Thomas G. Bennett. The design is believed to not have been patented and differs from the standard Model 1873 band by the inclusion of a screw on the underside. Bennett started his career with Winchester in 1870, and in less than a year was elected secretary of the company. Bennett went on to serve as the Vice President of Winchester from 1882 to 1889 and later president of the Olin Corporation from 1889 to 1921. He is perhaps best remembered for hiring the Browning brothers, who provided the company with its most notable late 19th century firearms such as the Model 1885 single shot rifle, Model 1887 lever action shotgun, Model 1897 slide action shotgun and lever action Models 1886, 1892, 1894 and 1895. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/Kings Improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight, the upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1873," and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. The rifle correctly has no caliber markings. British proofs are stamped on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The front sight is integral with the barrel band, and there is a folding ladder rear sight graduated from 1-8 and a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver. The straight grip stock is fitted with a trapdoor crescent buttplate. A four-piece cleaning rod is included.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The carbine retains 85% plus of the period, possibly factory refurbished blue finish overall with the balance thinning to a brown patina. The wood is fine with a repaired wrist, a hairline crack near the buttplate tang and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A factory museum documented Winchester First Model 1873 carbine with a barrel band designed by the company's future President that will make the most serious Winchester collector envious!

Special Order Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3019 (Sale Order: 20 of 918)

Special Order Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

This Special order Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured in 1877. This rifle has the very desirable First Model receiver with grooved dust cover guides and dust cover with checkered, oval, 'thumbprint'. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office form that identifies this Winchester Model 73 as, "Type: Rifle, Barrel Shape: 1/2 Oct, Trigger: Pln, Stock: Checkered Stock, Magazine: Short mag" and "Casehardened". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on "3-7-77". The rifle has a half-octagon/half-round barrel with a Beach folding combination front sight and buckhorn sporting style rear sight. A folding graduated peep sight with graduations from 0-75 is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle has a short magazine, First Style lever latch, and crescent buttplate with sliding brass trapdoor. The stock and forearm are "XXX" highly figured fancy grade walnut with factory checkering and a semi-gloss finish. On left side of tang is "XXX", "198", which is also stamped in the buttstock inlet. The checkering is the Second Style with large "Vee" on the stock wrist at the junction with the receiver. This checkering is found on Model 1873 rifles reportedly beginning in the low 23,000 serial number range. (This rifle is number 25777, which concurs.) The barrel and crescent buttplate are blue. The magazine tip, forearm cap, dust cover and receiver have the Winchester high polish finish. The loading gate is fire blue. The hammer, trigger and lever are casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866.OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped in two lines on the lower tang behind the lever latch. "XXX" and "198" are stamped on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock. The barrel and cartridge elevator correctly have no caliber markings.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. The rifle retains 80% plus of the period factory quality refurbished blue finish. Since the Cody letter identifies the receiver finish as "casehardened" it appears that this rifle was returned to Winchester and had the receiver and other casehardened components blued. The blue finish on the receiver and forearm cap are period and appear to be factory finish. (One will have to draw their own conclusions as to the aforementioned information.) The barrel legend is crisp. The receiver and side plates have only very minor handling marks and light edge wear. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are excellent with nearly all of the original finish and crisp checkering. Wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks. This is an excellent example of a scarce, special order Winchester First Model 1873 rifle.

Scarce New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic No. 1 Lever Action Pocket

Lot # 3020 (Sale Order: 21 of 918)

Scarce New Haven Arms Co. Volcanic No. 1 Lever Action Pocket Pistol

Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. circa 1859. This diminutive lever action pistol has a 3 1/2 inch octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine and distinctive brass frame. The barrel has a pinch-top front sight and a fixed rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the frame. The legend "NEW HAVEN CONN. /PATENT FEB. 14. 1854" is roll-stamped in two lines on the top barrel flat. The barrel is blued, the hammer and finger-ring lever are color casehardened, and the two-piece walnut grips have a high polish piano finish. The omission of the "VOLCANIC" markings on the barrel indicates that the pistol was manufactured after Oliver Winchester assumed control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co. in April 1857. The New Haven Arms Co. manufactured approximately 850 No. 1 Pocket Pistols between 1857 and 1862. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Class: Antique

Fine. The brass frame is in very fine condition with a mellow, unpolished patina. The side plate joints are extremely tight. Wear on the frame is limited to a few very minor scratches and handling marks. The surfaces of the barrel/magazine have a mottled silver-gray patina with scattered spots of surface rust and shallow pitting. The New Haven Arms legend is clear. The lever has the same mottled silver-gray patina and patches of surface rust as the barrel. The hammer has sharp knurling on the spur and retains about 75% of the muted casehardened finish. The grips are in good overall condition and retain about 80% of the high polish piano finish with moderate handling wear. The bolt has been polished and modified for centerfire cartridges. Bullard Large Frame Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3021 (Sale Order: 22 of 918)

Scarce and Desirable Semi-Deluxe Bullard Large Frame Lever Action Rifle

The distinctive Bullard rifles are desirable on the collector market today due to their limited production (estimated 10,000-12,000) from 1886 to 1890. Among those limited rifles, are a large array of variations including both large and small frames, military muskets, multiple stock configurations and grades, calibers, sights, etc. making it a rich ground for hunting down particularly rare examples like this semi-deluxe large frame sporting rifle. Finding Bullard's in this high of condition is also very difficult. It has a Winchester style German silver blade front sight and notch and folding latter rear sight on the part octagon barrel, "Cal/45" on top of the receiver ring, "BULLARD REPEATING ARMS COMPANY/SPRINGFIELD MASS U.S.A. PAT. AUG. 16. 1881." on the left side of the receiver, "EA110" on the bottom, and a smooth semi-pistol grip buttstock with nice flame figure and the checkered Bullard buttplate.

Excellent. This carbine is all original and remains in virtually unused condition with only very limited storage wear. The barrel and magazine retain 97% of the original blue finish. The barrel markings are near perfect. The receiver has 95% plus of the bright original blue finish with some very limited surface wear. The dust cover shows some minor flaking but has a strong 90% plus of the original blue. The left side of the receiver in contact with the saddle ring shows minimal finish wear which is consistent with the nearly new condition of the carbine. The loading gate cover retains close to 98% of the nitre blue finish. The hammer, trigger and loading lever show nearly all of their strong, deep original case colors. The buttplate retains 75% plus of the original casehardened finish. The stock and forearm remain in excellent plus condition and have nearly all of the original oil finish intact; wear is limited to several minor bruises on the upper right side of the stock near the buttplate due to storage. This is a really exceptional example of a Winchester Model 1873 carbine. Winchester carbines were usually considered "working" guns and inevitably show the effects of many years of hard use. Model 1873 carbines in new or nearly new condition, like this example, are extremely rare.

The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-." The lower tang is marked with the two-line patent date information and the serial number. The barrel, magazine and bolt are blue, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. The highly figured and checkered pistol grip stock has an ebony grip insert and crescent buttplate. The lower tang is marked "394 XXXX," the stock inlet is marked "394," and the buttplate is marked "394."

Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel and magazine have a smooth brown patina, and the bolt retains 60% original blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces retain a few areas of silvered out original case colors. The refinished wood is fine showing a small hairline crack in the wrist, a small chip missing near the upper tang, a small patch of paint near the toe and some minor scratches and pressure dents. The re-cut checkering is sharp. Mechanically excellent.
