Rare Smith & Wesson Pre-War K-22 Masterpiece Revolver

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 703)

serial #683137, .22 LR, 6" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces on this outstanding K-22 second model revolver retain about 98 to near 99% original blue, the loss due to some very light muzzle wear, the faintest of turn rings and very slight sharp edge wear, with a tiny rub mark at left front of the bow of guard; there is one spot on the cylinder between the flutes with some extremely light surface abrasions, most of which do not even breach the blue. The short action stepped hammer and grooved face trigger retain vivid color casehardening. The checkered walnut magna grips with silver Smith & Wesson medallions rate excellent, they are un-numbered but their fit is nearly perfect. The arm features a silver Call bead front sight and black square notch micrometer click rear sight with "patents pending" marking. The revolver comes in a red two-piece box with black and gold print marked "The K.-22 Masterpiece", the white serial number tag on its underside has faded with the years and its number is no longer legible. The box rates very good plus with lightly scuffed corners and edges, with a bit of pencil writing on the lid, it is unobtrusive. All numbers are matching. Factory records show shipment on March 16, 1940 to Clapp & Treat in Hartford for Earl M. Chase of Springfield, Mass. Overall a really superb example of these rare Pre-War revolvers from the man who knows them best. Just Lovely. (38414-31){C&R}[Roy Jinks Collection]

Extremely Rare Colt Berdan Russian Carbine

Lot # 30 (Sale Order: 30 of 703)

serial #2C, 42 Berdan caliber, 18 3/16" barrel with a bright minty bore. Sutherland's estimates that between 10 and 25 of these carbines were ever produced and this is very likely the example illustrated in The Book of Colt Firearms. The only marking on the gun aside from its Cyrillic barrel address is a "2 C" on the underside of the barrel and "J.R.H.JR" in oval cartouche indicating that this carbine was once part of the famous J.R. Hegeman Jr. Collection. The gun remains in wonderful, untouched original condition. The barrel retains about 97% original blue overall while the breechblock shows 95% strong original color case-hardened finish. The bolt shroud shows about 85% original color case-hardened finish blending with a smooth brown patina. The triggerguard and barrel band retain about 95% strong orginal blue finish with the sling bar retaining perhaps 80% original blue with the loss being primarily on the outer edge of the bar. The walnut stock rates excellent with 95% original finish remaining but with one notable bruise above the sling bar along with numerous light impact and handling marks. The upper left side of the stock near the heel of the buttplate is stamped with the small number "88". The carbine is sighted with military style front and ladder rear sights. While this carbine matches the description of the carbine in Sutherland's, there are marks in the wood of the illustrated example that do not appear in this stock. Perhaps Mr. Hegeman acquired more than one of these carbines from the factory. The inside of the action remains very bright and this carbine does not show any evidence of being fired. An extremely rare and fine Colt longarm for the advanced Colt or military arms collector. (18502-9) {ANTIQUE}

Starr Arms Company Model 1863 Single Action Army Percussion Revolver

Lot # 31 (Sale Order: 31 of 703)

serial #39419, .44 cal, 8" round barrel with a very good bore showing a few patches of minor pitting and oxidation. This single action Starr revolver remains in very fine condition retaining about 84% original blue on the frame and barrel with some high edge wear, flaking to a pleasing gray and brown, some scattered freckles, scratches and a few pinprick pits. The gripstraps and triggerguard have mostly toned to smooth gray with some streaks of blue, freckling and minor oxidation staining. The cylinder has toned to a rather even mix of blue streaks and grayish brown with some areas worn to gunmetal, a turn line and some scattered pinprick pits. The chambers and nipples remain extremely clean with some blue still present in each chamber. A number of the screws show some very minor slot damage and most of them retain a healthy amount of nice fire temper blue. The hammer and loading lever show some very nice case colors scattered about with the balance toned to a mix of smooth and smoky gray with a bit of minor freckling and oxidation staining. The one-piece smooth walnut grip is mismatched and stamp-numbered to gun 13779. It remains in good overall condition with worn finish, scattered dings, dents and a few small chips. Two inspector cartouches are present and still quite visible. All other serialized parts appear to be matching and everything remains mechanically sound with a strong hammer and very solid timing and lockup. This revolver would make a superb addition to any collection of U.S. martial arms. (138527-36) {ANTIQUE}

Rare Blake Bolt Action Repeating Military Rifle

Lot # 32 (Sale Order: 32 of 703)

serial #242, 30-40 Krag, 30" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. These unique rifles were manufactured by John. H. Blake of New York City beginning in the 1890's and running into the early 20th century. Very little is known about the company but they made rifles such as this that were submitted for U.S. Military trials and they also adapted this action to sporting arms. The condition of this rifle is wonderful with the metal surfaces retaining about 80% original blue finish which is thinning evenly and blending with a pleasing smooth brown patina in areas of loss. The walnut buttstock, forend and handguard all show 95% original finish remaining with just a few scattered light and minor handling marks. The pistolgrip is checkered as was standard and this checkering remains strong. The rifle features a removable tin rotary magazine which remains present. There is no maker name on the rifle, merely the serial number and on the left side "SINGLE" and "RAPID" labeling each end of the magazine cutoff lever. These rifles were not looked upon favorable by the ordnance board and failed to garner much commercial interest, therefore production was quite limited. This is a great example of these peculiar American bolt action magazine rifles. (18502-21) {C&R}

The case is excellent with a stable drying crack in one edge and some more modern light scratches. The interior of the case is lined in burgundy baize and is excellent just showing typical light wear, all partitions are firmly in place. This is a wonderful, early and completely honest Maynard set. Extremely Rare and Possibly Unique Remington Hepburn No. 3 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 40 of 703)

serial #95, 45-70, 27" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. The Remington Hepburn enjoyed success as a sporting and target rifle and here is a piece that was built to solicit military sales. The action appears identical to the sporting versions however the lever is longer than normal extending to the rear of the frame and it also has a larger thumbpiece; both improvements one would expect for a military version. The barrel shows the "E. Remington & Sons" address and is rather lightweight. The gun features smooth walnut stocks and military sights and has a sling ring and bar fitted on the left side of the frame. The condition of the gun is superb with the barrel retaining 98% strong original blue finish overall. The action retains 98% strong original color case-hardened finish overall. The walnut stocks rate excellent with virtually all of their original finish and just a couple light handling marks. The rear sight is military style however the factory holes are not spaced correctly so only the rear screw is in. This carbine is illustrated in Rowe's Remington's No. 3 Hepburn on page 205 where he describes it but apparently only from the photograph which was courtesy of Butterfield's Auction House, where the consignor acquired the gun. Rowe calls this "An experimental design and the only known one that was ever made". The gun is also illustrated in More Single Shot Rifles by Grant when it was part of the Jack Appel collection. The rarity and condition of this piece make it truly an investment quality Remington Hepburn carbine. (18502-12) {ANTQUE}

Rare Experimental Winchester Model 1883 Hotchkiss Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 41 (Sale Order: 41 of 703)

43 Spanish, 24" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. This carbine is not serial numbered and is marked on the top of the barrel just ahead of breech ".433". The left side of the action is marked "MODEL OF 1883" above the standard patent dates found on the model 1880 Hotchkiss rifles. The third model rifles did not have patent dates on the action leading us to believe that this is a pre-production or experimental carbine. The fact that it is chambered in 43 Spanish leads us to believe that this was made to solicit sales from the Spanish government who were currently issued Rolling Block single shot rifles in the same chambering. The carbine is in standard configuration with magazine cutoff lever on left side of action and safety lever on right side of action. The gun remains in wonderful condition with its barrel retaining 95% evenly thinning original blue finish with the barrel band showing 90% bright original blue. The action retains 95% faded original color case-hardened finish which has taken on a pleasing mottled smoky pewter color overall. The left side of the frame shows sling bar and ring. The plain walnut stocks rate excellent with 95% plus original finish remaining and with just a few sparsely scattered light handling marks. The carbine is sighted with standard military style sights. A very rare, high condition experimental Winchester Hotchkiss saddle ring carbine. (18502-3) {ANTIQUE}

Rare Remington Keene Prototype Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 42 (Sale Order: 42 of 703)

45-70, 18 1/4" round barrel with half magazine and a near excellent bright bore. This is a military style carbine with sling bar and ring mounted to left side of the stock which was very likely submitted to the government for testing. The gun features a sturdy hooded front sight, a nickel plated half magazine and this short 18 1/2" barrel, shorter than any known Remington Keene. The condition of the gun is excellent with the barrel and frame retaining 90% plus strong original blue finish. The magazine retains 95% original nickel and the hammer shows strong original color case-hardened finish with some scattered light surface oxidation. The cartridge lifter bears a mellow gray brown patina as does the bolt. The walnut stock rates excellent with nearly all of its original oil finish remaining and with a crack at the top tang which is cosmetic only and could be easily fixed by a competent wood man. According to a John Gangel catalog description from 10 years ago, this carbine has been the subject of research by RCA members and was solicited for donation by several firearms museums. A likely one-of-a-kind high condition Remington Keene saddle ring carbine. (17597-14) {ANTIQUE}

The grooved grips rate very good plus with a few scattered dings and handling marks. The charging handle, grips and backstrap appear to be the only serialized parts and they are matching. An original matching shoulder stock is included with this pistol that has some moderate pitting on the metal parts, an added varnish, scattered dings and scratches. A nicely restored early Broomhandle pistol overall. (208400-8) {ANTIQUE}

Rare Special Order Winchester Model 1885 New York Expo-Shipped High Wall Rifle

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 50 of 703)

serial #71014, 50 Express, 36" extra length No. 3 part octagon part round barrel with a very good bore which is bright with strong rifling showing sparsely scattered light pitting. The barrel and frame retain about 97% original blue with the loss due primarily to light high edge wear and even fading. The Winchester spur lever shows some trace original case colors but is primarily a mottled smoky gray patina. The smooth walnut pistolgrip buttstock and forend rate excellent with nice original varnish and only light scattered handling marks, the forend with ebony tip and ebony inlay at the retaining screw. Currently the rifle is sighted with a simple bead sporting front sight and a flat-topped sporting rear sight. The very interesting factory letter shows that this arm originally had a 30" No. 3 weight octagon barrel in 38-55 with no rear seat, mid-range and windgauge sights, checkered pistolgrip stock with Swiss cheekpiece (the lever is not mentioned but it makes sense since the arm had a Swiss cheekrest and seemed to be set up as an offhand shooter) and was shipped to the New York Expo. While there was no "Expo" or World's Fair as such in New York in 1895, it should be remembered that the American Institute Fair was held annually in New York from 1829 until 1897, an important exposition for manufacturers and inventors of the day, Winchester would certainly have had a presence there. The arm was received back from the Expo in June of 1895. It would seem that the arm languished at Winchester for a bit after that, no doubt as a sales sample or show piece, when in October of 1911 it was sent to the custom shop and changed radically. The factory letter shows it then becoming a .50 Express, 36" part round part octagon No. 3 weight barrel, plain pistolgrip stock, sporting sights, and also "sling and swivels", which there is no evidence of. The arm was returned for repair again in March of 1917. Interestingly, the stock and forend have a very attractive, single borderline outline cut, around the periphery of the forend, and around the buttplate and the frame on the buttstock. It is very attractive and precisely done... could it be a factory embellishment? The left side of the tang shows a precise, nearly invisible repair to a chip, it may ??be the source of the 1917 return and repair order. The lower tang shows the original exhibition stocks assembly nos. “1710 XXX SBC” (we assume Swiss Butt Checkered) and the upper tang has the 1911 assembly nos. “10375 CF” which are stamped in the end grain of the butt beneath the buttplate. Overall a very storied and very cool 1885 High Wall rifle, all the more desirable with its extra-length barrel and large bore caliber. (38087-110){ANTIQUE}[Kenneth Fry Collection]
