Woodland Era Hopewell Fox & Snake Pipe 200 B.C.E

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 27 of 510)

The present lot provides you an Ancient Hopewell Fox and Snake Effigy Platform Pipe, originating from Southern Ohio in the heart of the Ohio River Valley, and believed to be Middle Woodland Period dating to circa 200 BCE to 500 CE. The effigy pipe carved of rich brown pipestone, showcases well preserved condition and excellent craftsmanship. The piece was acquired from Scott County, Illinois as per the collection/museum tag along the bottom (also marked “45d”). The piece shows an uncommon amount of detail and emotion with the pipe bowl being found at the back of the fox with the animal’s head tucked down and to the right curled in looking down and the approaching snake carving. Provenance: From a French artifact auction, Thion Encheres, in October 7, 2007, and inspected by expert antiquity analyzer; François Bigot. Istoria Del Concilio Tridentino Paolo Sarpi 1757

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 28 of 510)

You are bidding on a two volume set of Istoria Del Concilio Tridentino by Paolo Sarpi printed in 1757. The book title translates too "History of the Tridentine Council" or more commonly known in English as The Council of Trent. Paolo Sarpi’s greatest and most influential work, dedicated to James I, published pseudonymously with the name Pietro Soave Polano, an anagram of Paolo Sarpi Veneto. The editor, Marco Antonio de Dominus, polished the text and has been accused of falsifying it, however recent comparison with a manuscript corrected by Sarpi himself shows that his alterations were unimportant. Translations into other languages followed: English by Nathaniel Brent and Latin in 1620, made partly by Adam Newton and French and German editions. The work was widely read for at least the next two centuries. "Forced upon an unwilling papacy by the Emperor Charles V, who was anxious to put an end to the dissensions caused by religious strife, the Council (of Trent) first met in 1545. From the beginning however its proceedings were under papal domination, and, so far from effecting reconciliation with Protestantism, its pronouncements on undecided points of dogma and the bold front it thus put forward, gave its members the new confidence they needed to resist the evangelical threat. No compromise was offered, and when, after numerous delays and evasions designed to frustrate the intentions of the non-Italian members, the Council closed at the end of 1563, an instrument had been placed in the hands of the Papacy which determined the evolution of the Roman Church for the next three centuries, culminating in the pronouncement of the dogma of Papal infallibility in 1877. Only now is some relaxation beginning to take place. The full force of the acts of the council was not lost either on those who desired reconciliation between the church and the new schismatics or on those who distrusted the centralization of power in Rome. It was both these motives which prompted the venetian patriot, scientist, scholar and reformer, Paolo Sarpi, to compile his memorable ‘History of the Council of Trent’, which was published pseudonymously in London. A member of the Servite Order, hated yet never excommunicated by the papal See, Sarpi was the devoted and honored servant of the Venetian Republic. Like the author in his lifetime, so in later years his book formed a nucleus of opposition to the papacy of Pius IV. Translated and reprinted over and over again, the masterpiece of ‘Father Paul of Venice’, as he was known to generations, is still read. Ranke (286) made a minute study of it and of the Papal counterblast by Cardinal Pallavicini and found not much difference between the two in point of impartiality, though he preferred Sarpi in point of style. Only now are the issues debated between the two beginning to recede from the forefront of theological controversy." Printing and the Mind of Man. The opinion of Le Courayer, that Sarpi "était Catholique en gros et quelque fois Protestant en detail" (that he was Catholic overall and sometimes Protestant in detail) seems not altogether groundless. This two volume set shows good condition for its age but has light age yellowing, light separating, some minor spotting, a few leaves browned. The books measure 8 3/8" W x 10 5/8" H x 2 1/8" Thick.

Winchester Model 1894 32 WS Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 36 (Sale Order: 39 of 510)

This lot features a Winchester Model 1894 32 WS Lever Action Rifle. The rifle features a 19 1/2" barrel. blue'd finish, tang sight, and a great patina. Probably the most famous, and certainly the most popular, hunting rifle in history is the Winchester Model 1894. The Model 94 was the first sporting rifle to sell over 1,000,000 copies. Sales ultimately totaled somewhere around 7,000,000 before the Model 94 was discontinued when the U.S. factory was shut down in 2006. No other sporting rifle has approached those numbers, and it is unlikely that one ever will. But back in 1894 when John Browning completed his design and Winchester began to market it, none of this success was assured. In fact, the Model 1894 was a ground breaking sporting rifle; the first chambered for the (then) new smokeless powder cartridges. It was a big leap forward, and a big gamble. The Model 1894 could, like the first Colt double action revolvers and many other firearms that were ahead of their time, have been a commercial flop. In which case it would be only a historical footnote today. But, as it turned out, the Model 1894 appeared at exactly the right time, and the rest is history. The rifle is in good condition showing honest wear from use. The bluing is around 45%. The bore is bright with strong rifling. This rifle was manufactured in 1921 and is a Curio and Relic firearm. FFL transfer or NICS background check.

Custom Remington 1903A3 .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle

Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 43 of 510)

You are bidding on a Custom Remington 1903A .30-06 Bolt Action Rifle. The rifle features a 24" barrel, premium lyman iron sights, premium monte carlo walnut stock, tuned action, and scope. Remington began production of the M1903 in September 1941, at serial number 3,000,000, using old tooling from the Rock Island Arsenal which had been in storage since 1919. The very early rifles are almost indistinguishable from 1919-made Rock Island rifles. As the already worn tooling began to wear beyond use Remington began seeking Army approval for a continuously increasing number of changes and simplifications to both speed up manufacture and improve performance. The milled parts on the Remington M1903 were gradually replaced with stamped parts until, at about serial number 3,330,000, the Army and Remington recognized that a new model name was appropriate. Other features of the M1903, such as high-grade walnut stocks with finger grooves, were replaced with less expensive but serviceable substitutes. Most milled parts made by Remington were marked with an "R". M1903 production was discontinued in favor of the M1903A3. The most noticeable visual difference in the M1903A3 was the replacement of the barrel-mounted rear sight with a smaller, simpler aperture rear sight mounted on the rear of the receiver; it was primarily adopted in order to speed familiarization by soldiers already trained on the M1 Garand, which had a similar sighting system. This rifle looks to have been completely redone and improved for hunting. It has been professionally reblue'd, the action has been tuned, and a premium stock. This rifle shows great condition with little wear and some slight evidence of use. This rifle was manufacture in 1942. Curio & Relic firearm. The serial number is 4022813.
