Rare USS Arizona WW2 Survivor Uniform Grouping

Lot # 1a (Sale Order: 2 of 223)

A one of a kind uniform grouping named to Seaman 1st Class Paul H. Faulkner, who was a listed crew member on board the USS Arizona when it was hit and sank in Pearl Harbo...morer on Dec. 7, 1941. He is listed on all the muster rolls and survivors lists. His uniforms consist of four uniform jackets -1 is blue double breasted , 2 are khaki and is his dress white jacket. One khaki jacket has his full name, the other his initials in the collar. The whites have his laundry # and the blues are unmarked. The whites have removable buttons, and they are missing. He was a career Sailor, and these are his WWII era uniforms, which were updated as he was promoted and would have been worn in the 1950s. He retired in the early 60s as a Master Chief. Condition is great and three of the uniforms have amazing heavy bullion rates on them (one of the patches has a small moth nip). Very historical and original grouping.

RARE! Photo/Autograph/Document Grouping-Transatlantic Flight "Liberty"-Otto Hillig

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 20 of 223)

One of a kind grouping consisting of historical documents and photographs, "Liberty" plane with pilot Holger Hoiriis and Otto Hillig, autographed photos, souvenirs, pap...moreers, flight covers, air show ticket and more, passed down from relative's estate, a rare find.......Besides being a highly successful photographer, Mr. Hillig had a venturesome spirit. He owned one of the first automobiles in the county and in 1916 he and another local individual made a transcontinental trip across the country in an automobile, at a time when such a trip was practically unheard of. In the early 1920’s he was one of the pioneers in aerial photography. His next dream was to fly the Atlantic in his own plane. He found a young Danish pilot, Holger Hoiriis, and commissioned the construction of a Wright-powered Bellanca monoplane at a cost of $22,000. The plane had a 300 horsepower engine and attained a top speed of 132 miles per hour. Painted red and silver, it was named “Liberty” in honor of his adopted hometown. The flight began from the Liberty Golf Course, touched down in Newfoundland and began the cross-Atlantic flight on June 24, 1931. Hoiriis and Hillig (later referred to as “the first trans-Atlantic backseat driver”) had no radio, no life saving equipment, and little food. Because of a fog, they flew over Spain and France before they discovered where they were and landed in Krefeld, Germany with five gallons of gas to spare. Continuing on their trip, they received a tumultuous welcome from 60,000 Danes, another ovation from Hillig’s hometown in Germany, and equally warm welcomes in New York City and back home in Liberty.. They got the idea to fly across the Atlantic from the U.S. to Denmark. The first transatlantic flight was made only 12 years earlier. Hillig financed the majority of the project. Hoiriis was the pilot on the entire trip, because Hillig was not a very experienced pilot, but he could, however, replace Hoiriis for short periods. On 24 June 1931, the couple took off from Newfoundland in their red and silver / white Bellanca Pacemaker, with the name Liberty painted on the side of the plane. Liberty was the name of the small town in New York state where Hillig lived and had earned his money. They included 600 gallons of gasoline to the 3150 miles long trip. But the weather was not too good. They flew into rain, fog, strong northerly winds, wind and ice. The Liberty's first destination was Copenhagen, and then Hilligs birthplace, Steinbrucken, Germany. The fog was so strong that they could not see the Atlantic Ocean for 17 hours. Early in the morning Hoiriis dived the plane down through a hole in the clouds and there was the earth. It could only be England, on the road to Copenhagen. They expected to see the English Channel, every minute, but it did not happen. As far as the eye stretched, there was only land to see and therefore they believed that it was France. Soon the realized it was Spain. The fog had got them off course and Hoiriis then headed north. It was late in the afternoon when they spotted an airport. Hoiriis, who had flown for 32 hours, was very exhausted and decided to land. The airport was in Krefeld, Germany, near the Dutch border. Rare grouping!!
