New England Militia Musket

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 345)      

.69 caliber, 42" pinned round barrel, bright finish, walnut stock, brass furniture. T Ketland & Co marked commercial flintlock, barrel with US military V/P/[eagle head] proofs. Three brass pipes, wooden ramrod. Lug for socket bayonet. Includes US M-1816 bayonet.

Condition: Good. Metal dull with scattered pitting and age discoloration. Good bore, mechanically functional. Wood with some replaced pin holes in stock, a chip out at the toe and handling mars. Bayonet good.

Massive Belgian Flintlock Pistol

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 345)      

.58 caliber, 13.5” round barrel, no S/N. Bright finish, hardwood stock, brass and iron furniture. Very large, about 19.5” in overall length. Unmarked 5” long flint lock with fenced and bridled brass pan and rounded, reinforced cock. Belgian proofs on breech above touchhole. Brass triggerguard, buttcap and side plate, other mountings of iron with single barrel band and iron ramrod. Bore measures .58 land to land and about .64 groove to groove with deep, four groove rifling. Barrel appears to be a recycled musket barrel. Workmanship and use of “parts on hand” suggest mid-19th century production for trade to Africa or similar locations. A large, solid pistol with a somewhat piratical appearance.

Condition: Very good, metal lightly oxidized with scattered surface discoloration and some pinpricking.  Brass with a medium golden patina. Mechanically functional, good bore. Wood solid with nicks and dings.

U.S. Model 1812 Musket Stock and Barrel

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 345)      

.69 caliber, 42" barrel length, no S/N. Walnut stock with iron mountings.. Button-shaped ramrod. Missing the lock, hammer, frizzen and frizzen pan..

Condition: The barrel has a plum patina throughout with some salt and pepper pitting near the upper tang. All iron mountings with a dark plum patina including the butt plate. The stock is good exhibiting nicks and dings consistent with age and use.

Militia Uniform

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 345)      

Mid-19th century.  Swallowtail style coat with blue wool construction faced with silver ribbon.  Front features twenty-seven .75" W.H Horstman marked silver plated federal eagle block "I" buttons with six of same on cuff facings.  Functional cuffs held closed with three .62" buttons each.  Rear of jacket features ten .75" buttons.  Collars features one 1.75" silver bullion and sequin star each.  Silver bullion epaulets attached by silver ribbon and silk laces with reinforced holes in collar for attachment.

Sleeves measure approx. 27.5" from shoulder seam and approx. 14.25" from right to left shoulder seam.

Provenance: General James A. Ekin Family

Condition: Good. Color is a deep blue with very little fading and very little evidence of insect damage. Silver ribbon is slight loose and fraying in some places. Tarnishing of buttons present throughout. Metal somewhat loose on epaulets.Additional condition information available upon request.

Rare French Serpent Head Powder Flask

Lot # 5 (Sale Order: 5 of 345)      

4.25" x 1.25". Brass top and spout with spout showing worn increments.  French die impressed two-piece copper body in the form of a scaled serpent.  This style of flask is featured as number 1259 on page 414 of Ray Riling's The Powder Flask Book, in which he states that he knew of only one example of this flask.

Condition: Good to very good.  Flask has very little wear with high amount of detail of faces.  Spout and top have a dull luster with a deepening patina and some verdigris.  No repairs on seams visible.

Lot of Two Ames and Batty Peace Flasks

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 345)      

Ames flask measure 9.5" x 4.75" and Batty flask measures 10.25" x 4.75".  Brass bodies with brass tops and spouts.  Top of Ames flask marked "1838" and "N.P. AMES".  Spout may be a replacement.  Both faces depict federal eagle over circle of twenty-six stars encircling clasping hands over a sunburst, all over a panoply of arms with "US" in shield.  Batty flask marked "1850" and "BATTY" with "ADK" inspector mark.  Both faces depict federal eagle over circle of nineteen stars encircling clasping hands over a sunburst, all over a panoply of arms with "US" in shield.  Both flasks have triangular carrying rings.

Both flasks are pictured on page 362 as numbers 857 and 861 in Ray Riling's The Powder Flask Book

Condition: Good. Flasks have a brass to bronze color with some darkening overall. Some verdigris on lids with springs functioning normally. Markings are legible but verdigris can be removed for more clarity. Batty shows some repair markings on seam.

U.S. Navy Powder Flask

Lot # 7 (Sale Order: 7 of 345)      

9.75" x 5.5".  Brass with replaced brass top.  Replaced Spring spout with 4, 5 3/4, 5 1/4, and 5 dram increments.  Top marked "Patent".  Design on both sides shows a fouled anchor with "U.S.N." initials.  Featured in Ray Riling's "The Powder Flask Book" as number 863 on page 363.

Condition: Fair to good.  Body has an overall deep brass patina with some streaked bronzing.  Several dents in body.  Spout and top have been replaced, but both function.  Seam shows previous repair.

Frary, Benhanm & Co. Gun Stock Powder Flask

Lot # 8 (Sale Order: 8 of 345)      

Flask measures 8.75" x 3.75". Copper body with brass top and spout marked with 2, 2 1/4, 2 1/2, and 2 3/4 dram increments. Spout marked "FRARY BENHAM & CO". Two carrying rings.

Pictured on page 413 on Ray Riling's The Powder Flask Book. Frary manufactured stock flasks are listed as having patent and scre-off tops. This example has a top affixed with screws, which may indicate a repair.

Condition: Good. Much of the copper color remains with some streaks of darkening and brass taking on a dull luster. Company markings are faint but fairly legible. Spring is strong and spout is functional.

R. Dingee U.S. "Bugle Eagle" Powder Flask

Lot # 9 (Sale Order: 9 of 345)      

8.75" x 4.7".  Brass body with brass lid and unmarked spout.  Two carrying rings.  Spout has likely been replaced.  Both faces depict American eagle clutching arrows and olive branch above bugle with "US".  Top marked "R. DINGEE/New York" along with "1833" date.  This unique flask is included as number 856 on page 362 of Ray Riling's The Powder Flask Book, where he describes flasks of this type as a variation of the flasks purchased by the US government.  

Condition: Good.  Body has a darkened patina with some wear and loss of definition on eagle and bugles.  Spring is damaged but functional with spout devoid of screw.  No repairs visible on seam.

Ames U.S. Army Model 1840 Medical Service Sword

Lot # 10 (Sale Order: 10 of 345)      

27" double-edged blade.  Brass guard and grip with brass scabbard.  Right side of blade adorned with American eagle and panoply of arms with caduceus and helmet of Hermes.  Left side marked with "U.S. Medical Staff" and panoply of arms with caduceus.  Right ricasso marked "N.P. Ames/Cutler/Springfield". Right side of guard has "M.S." is script above thirteen stars.  Floral motifs throughout with American eagle.  Left side shield and oval left blank.  No markings on scabbard. 

Condition: Good.  Blade has a dull pewter patina with some spots of darkening but no active rust or edge damage.  Hilt has a dull luster with some loss of finish on high areas.  Some scratches on guard and scabbard as well as some additional finish loss on scabbard.  Tip of scabbard missing.

Sharps New Model 1859 Carbine

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 11 of 345)      

.52 caliber, 22" barrel, s/n 52185. Blued and casehardened finish, walnut stock and forend. Standard Sharps markings on lock, no markings present on receiver or barrel. Leaf rear sight, fixed front sight, single barrel band, sling bar and ring. Buttstock replaced with a NM1863 butt without patchbox.

Condition: Fair to good.  Lock with traces of case hardened finish, rest a dull gray. Receiver gray with pitting. Barrel retains some old, applied brown finish, but all barrel marks were removed during the refinishing. Mechanically functional, but the Lawrence pellet primer mechanism is void of internal parts. Fair bore is dirty and pitted. Butt stock a later M1863 replacement, both it and the forend have been sanded and show moderate to heavy wear. Barrel band loose, rear sight blade replaced, sling ring replaced.

US M1861 Contract Rifle Musket By Robinson

Lot # 13 (Sale Order: 12 of 345)      

.58, 40" barrel secured by three flat bands, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock. Lock marked with Eagle/US and E. ROBINSON / NEW YORK and dated 183 at tail. Breech with matching date and V / P / Ealge head proofs, counterpane with single cartouche that is not completely legible. Correct M1861 pattern rear sight, original front sight/bayonet lug, original sling swivels. Swelled shank ramrod with modified tulip head.

Condition: Good. Metal with a salt & pepper patina of surface oxidation and light pitting. Mechanically functional, pitted bore has been smoothed with no rifling. Stock with numerous bumps and dings and a 2.5" chip of wood missing between the tang and the hammer.

Fifth Model Burnside Carbine

.52 caliber, 21" barrel, s/n 26562. Blued and casehardened finish, walnut stock and forend. Standard Burnside markings on lock and top of frame, breechblock with matching serial number. Sling bar and ring, sling swivel in toe. Two-leaf rear sight.

Condition: Good. Retains traces of finish on the receiver, none on the barrel. Mostly an oxidized brownish gray color with scattered surface oxidation and some pinpricking. Markings legible, no cartouches visible on the wrist. Wood worn with cracks in the forend, sanded and refinished.

Manhattan Navy Series II Percussion Revolver

.38 caliber, 6.5" octagonal barrel, S/N 29555.  Matching serial numbers.  Five-round non-fluted cylinder with twelve stops and 1859 patent date.  Grips marked "H" and "D" next to screws on backstrap.  

Condition: Poor to fair.  Overall dark coloration with some wear to raised edges on barrel.  Multiple dings and dents throughout with cylinder scene showing significant wear with partially legible patent date.  Brass has a dark patina with grips showing multiple blemishes associated with age and use.

Smith & Wesson 1st Model 2nd Issue Revolver

Lot # 18 (Sale Order: 17 of 345)      

.22 caliber, 3.25" octagonal barrel, S/N 44607.  Blued barrel and cylinder with nickel plated brass frame and ivory grips.  Blade front sight with 7-shot non-fluted cylinder.  Top of barrel marked "SMITH AND WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS." with 1855, 1859, and 1860 patent dates on cylinder.  Serial number on bottom of butt.  

Condition: Good.  Barrel has a dark gray patina with some wear on muzzle and sharp edges.  Cylinder has a medium gunmetal coloration with some moderate wear to frame finish revealing brass.  Ivory grips have a cream and caramel patina with some hairline cracking on bottom of butt.  Stamps are somewhat worn but legible.  Bore fair.

"When Shall We Three Meet Again?" Powder Flask

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 18 of 345)      

7.25" x 3.75".  Copper body with brass lid and spring pout devoid of dram markings.  Top and spout may be a replacement.  Both sides depict two donkeys in a field with "WHEN SHALL WE THREE MEET AGAIN" in a ribbon.  This line is notably found as the first line in Shakespeare's Macbeth, spoken by the first witch.  This unique flask is included as number 512 on page 307 of Ray Riling's The Powder Flask Book, though he does not offer any commentary on its origin.  Two carrying rings.

Condition: Good.  Body has a copper coloration becoming a deep bronze near the bottom.  Spring is functional and spout unscrews easily.  Repair marks present on seam.

.32 caliber, 4" octagonal barrel, S/N 10.  Post front sight with hammer rear sight. Five-shot cylinder.  Top of barrel marked "LONDON ARMS COMPANY" with stagecoach holdup cylinder scene.  Underside of frame forward of trigger guard marked "PATENTED/DEC. 27, 1859".  Scroll engraving on frame with serial number on frame under right grip.  




Provenance: Collection of the late Art Gerber

Condition: Fair to good.  Metal has an overall pewter coloration with some scattered cleaned pitting.  Cylinder scene worn but legible, as are patent and barrel markings.  Some case hardening remains on leading lever.  Grips are worn with a chip missing from bottom of left grip.  Appears mechanically functional.  Bore fair.

.32 caliber, 5" octagonal barrel, S/N 1912.  All visible number appear to match, butt stamp somewhat illegible.  Serial numbers marked on bottom of barrel, cylinder pin, and butt.  Screwdriver missing from butt recess.  No barrel markings.

Condition: Good.  Appears to have been cleaned.  Bright gray luster with some pitting on left side of barrel.  Some additional darkening and light pitting on right side of frame with some rust in cylinder stops.  Bore good with some pitting.

Condition: Fair condition.  Barrel has a gunmetal coloration with some silver plating remaining, leaving a mottled gray, purple, and brass patina.  Grips has blemishes consistent with age and use.  Bore fair, needs cleaned.

Smith & Wesson 1st Model Second Issue Revolver

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 24 of 345)      

.22RF Short, 3.25" octagonal barrel, S/N 41612 (mfg. ca 1864). Blued barrel, silver-plated brass frame, varnished rosewood grips. Matching assembly numbers throughout, interior of right grip correctly numbered to the pistol. One-line Smith & Wesson barrel address and standard patent markings on cylinder. The first truly successful American cartridge revolver, the Smith & Wesson Model 1 is an essential part of any antique American firearms collection. Although more than 100,000 of these 1st Model, 2nd Issue revolvers were produced ca 1860-1868, they rarely appear in this kind of wonderful condition, especially those that were manufactured during the American Civil War.

Condition: Very fine. Retains most of the blued finish and silver plating on the frame, which is heavily tarnished and nearly black. Mechanically functional, good bore and fine grips with much of their original varnish. A really great condition little Model 1.

Colt third Model Deringer

.41 caliber, 2.5" barrel, S/N 8588, marked on the left side of frame 41 cal.  Blue barrel, nickel plated frame.  Varnished walnut grips.

Provenance: Collection of the late Art Gerber

Condition: Overall very good retaining some of the original blue finish and nickel finish.  Grips retain a lot of the varnished finish.  Bore is fair and will clean to better.
