Spencer Model 1865 Repeating Army Rifle

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 1114)

serial #90730, 50 RF, 30" round barrel with a bright very good bore. This rifle appears to be a transitional rifle between the 1865 and 1867 rifles and shows matching numbers on its frame and underside of the barrel. The top of the barrel is marked M.1865 and the rifle is numbered slightly below 91000 which is the lower end of the given serial range for the model 1867 rifles. The breechblock is equipped with the Spencer cutoff which first appeared on the 1867 rifles. There may be a spring missing as there is nothing (other than gravity) to prevent the cartridge guide/cutoff from pivoting up away from the breechblock. The condition of this rifle is quite nice with the barrel retaining a pleasing smooth even brown patina overall. The action shows perhaps 50% faded original color case-hardened finish blending with a mellow gray brown patina. The walnut stock and forend rate excellent with 90% original oil finish and with no evidence of ever being cartouched. The gun features standard stud mounted blade front and folding ladder style rear sights. This is a very fine and interesting Spencer rifle variant. (18752-5) {ANITIQUE}

U.S. Model 1861 Percussion Contract Rifle-Musket by Wm. Mason

Lot # 28 (Sale Order: 28 of 1114)

.58 cal., 40" round barrel with a near very good bore that shows nice rifling its entire length with some patches of pitting here and there. This rifle musket is in very nice condition. The lock bears proper markings and is dated 1863 while the barrel shows proper "V / P / (eaglehead)" inspector's marks and is also dated 1863. The metal surfaces are a smooth silver gray color overall, probably lightly and very professionally "brightened up" at some point but all markings are clear and legible and there is no pitting or oxidation staining of any kind. The stock is also excellent with 95% oil finish remaining, nice clean edges and no evidence of ever being cartouched. It is possible that the stock was also very lightly and professionally cleaned. There is a large numeral "28" stamped just ahead of the buttplate tang. A very nice bright 1861 contract musket by Mason of Taunton. (18752-57) {ANTIQUE}

U.S. Model 1861 Percussion Contract Rifle-Musket by Alfred Jenks

Lot # 29 (Sale Order: 29 of 1114)

Description Update (5/31/18): Moderate chip right of frame

.58 cal., 40" barrel with a near very good bore. The lockplate is properly marked with Federal eagle and "U.S. / BRIDESBURG" ahead of hammer and is dated 1863 to rear of hammer. The barrel bears proper inspector's markings "V / P / (eaglehead)" and is also dated 1863. The barrel and lock bear a pleasing even gray patina overall with just the lightest of salt & pepper pitting confined to the bolster area and along the top edge of forestock; all markings remain clear and legible. The bolster itself is a little bit darker and the metal surfaces were likely very lightly and professionally cleaned long ago and are looking quite attractive. The walnut stock rates excellent with lots of original oil finish remaining, showing clean edges and two very crisp cartouches. The butt of the stock shows some figure but certainly not enough to prevent if from passing inspection. The musket is equipped with proper original sights and comes with its iron tulip shaped ramrod. A very nice example of the Bridesburg Civil War contract musket. (18752-94) {ANTIQUE}

D S Nippes Maynard Tape Primer-Converted Martial Musket

Lot # 30 (Sale Order: 30 of 1114)

.69 cal, 42" barrel with a lightly oxidized bore. The metal surfaces are very pleasing smooth gunmetal-pewter patina with some sparsely scattered oxidation stains here and there and the oddly scattered light handling mark. The appropriate U.S. and sunken P firing proof with inspectors initials are at the barrel breech with the tang dated 1844. The lockplate features the "Mill/Creek/PA/1842" marking at its rear with an 1846 marking on the Maynard patent pivoting tape cover. The walnut stock rates very good showing perhaps an old very light cleaning, retaining the minor dings, dents and handling marks from the years but with evident left-side cartouches, one being somewhat light. The lock functions well mechanically and the primer tape advancing mechanism works as-designed. There is a trumpet-shaped ramrod in place in the channel. A very attractive, very fine example of these interesting percussion conversions. (38752-72) {ANTIQUE}

Extremely Rare and Fine James Purdey Large Bore Percussion Jacob-Rifled Dangerous Game Rifle

Lot # 32 (Sale Order: 32 of 1114)

serial #4211, .78 caliber or about 12 bore, 35" octagon barrel with a bright excellent Jacob-rifled bore. This rifle is very impressive in stature, quality and condition. This rifle is listed in Unsworth's The Early Purdeys as follows: "This is the first known four-groove rifle made by Purdey; there may be others that have not come to notice.". The lock features wonderful scroll engraving with "PURDEY" engraved at center and is equipped with a sliding safety mounted to rear of hammer. The barrel tang is engraved in full coverage scroll with a single platinum band at the breech of barrel with bolster showing an engraved platinum blow out plug. The barrel shows the "J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON" address on the top flat and shows London proofs and serial number on bottom flat along with the initials "JP". The rifle is equipped with an adjustable set trigger and an engraved round patchbox on right side of butt. The triggerguard is engraved in near full coverage scroll with a checkered steel "pistolgrip". The condition of the rifle is very nice with the barrel retaining a pleasing deep gray brown patina with some damascus pattern still showing in areas. The barrel remains smooth and the barrel address is slightly light but is fully and clearly legible. The lock shows a pleasing mix of faded original color case-hardening and a smooth gray patina with all engraving remining very sharp. The triggerguard retains about 75% original blue with some flaking to brown. The stock is of nicely figured English walnut and features a flared shadowline cheekpiece and a checkered steel shotgun style buttplate. The condition of the stock is excellent with 95% original finish remaining and with sharp checkering on the wrist. The wedge escutcheons are fully scroll engraved as is the large sling stud in toeline of stock. The checkered steel shotgun style buttplate has an engraved tang and screws. The rifle is sighted with a fine low profile beaded blade front and a single standing, four folding leaf express rear sight; what appears to be the original brass tipped ramrod is included with the rifle. Jacob rifling was an improvement of the Brunswick rifling which consisted of two deep grooves which were cast into the bullet and fit into the rifling when loading. The Jacob system used the same mechanical rifling cast into the bullet but with four grooves so the circumference of the bullet is symmetrical which produces improved accuracy. The rifle comes with a modern mold to cast these mechanical bullets along with about 65 cast lead projectiles. The mold is drilled for a hollow point insert and all cast bullets are hollow point but the insert is no longer present. This is an extremely rare, very fine and substantial twelve-plus-pound dangerous game rifle by one of the World's finest and most prestigious gunmakers. (18812-1) {ANTIQUE}

Burgess Slide Action Folding Shotgun

Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 40 of 1114)

serial #3182, 12 ga, 19 1/2" plain barrel choked improved cylinder with an about very good bore which shows light oxidation and light pitting its full-length. The barrel and magazine tube retaining perhaps 75% original blue, the loss is due primarily to fading and toning to plum brown, appearing stronger under normal ambient light. The nosecap has toned to plum and the receiver is a mix of plum brown and pewter with the expected minor handling marks from the years but with strong trace blue in the protected areas. The sliding grip support shows some toning to plum, light oxidation and a couple spots of very light pitting with some strong trace blue at its root at the receiver. The walnut straight grip buttstock, checkered pistolgrip and checkered forend all rate about very good with much original varnish, minor handling marks and dings from the years and the buttplate with a 1/2" chip missing at the toe. The gun seems to function well mechanically and features the "Burgess Gun Co." name and address on the bolt slide, the belly showing only the serial number neatly engraved. There are a few spots of very sparsely scattered very light pitting but they are unobtrusive. There is a reproduction top-quality Burgess folding shotgun belt holster listed in the silent auction. Overall a very nice and very solid example of a late production Burgess Gun Company folding shotgun. (38745-5) {C&R}

Extremely Rare Burgess Gun Co. Factory Cutaway Demonstrator Shotgun

Lot # 41 (Sale Order: 41 of 1114)

serial #1447, 12 ga., 26" barrel, unchoked, with a mostly bright very good bore which shows scattered pitting its full length. The barrel, magazine tube and nosecap retain about 95% later blue, the nice damascus pattern slightly evident beneath the polishing. The magazine tube, receiver and pistolgrip support frame have all been nickel or chrome plated some years ago, the bolt cover and action plate still being blued (serial number is a somewhat light and there are remnants of light pits on the bottom receiver cover). The straight grip walnut buttstock and checkered forend rate very good plus with good original varnish and overall minor dings and handling marks from the years. The gutta-percha checkered pistolgrip rates about very good, is mostly smooth, and has only a small chip missing from its right rear edge. The receiver has been cutaway in the factory pattern to reveal the inner workings of these very interesting firearms. The rear cutaway window on the pistolgrip frame shows light borderline engraving around it, there normally would be a checkered thumbprint in this area which is not present due to the factory cut-away. The gun seems to function well mechanically and is an extremely interesting example and would be an indisposable acquisition for any collector or student of Burgess Gun Company arms. There is a reproduction top-quality Burgess folding shotgun belt holster listed in the silent auction. (38315-25 LTS355) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T Steadman Collection]

Whitney Burgess Morse 1878 Second Model Sporting Rifle

Lot # 42 (Sale Order: 42 of 1114)

serial #785, 45-70, 28" octagon barrel with full magazine and a good plus bore that shows strong rifling throughout but is a little dark with scattered pitting. This is an interesting second model which shows transitional features. The frame has the omitted third screw on left rear of action, the serial number is marked internally and the nosecap remains wedge fastened. It was during the second model production that the external serial number started to appear along with the screw-fastened nosecap. Maxwell states that the transition to external numbers happened somewhere between serial numbers 731 and 802, this rifle #785 helps narrow that window somewhat. The barrel bears the proper "G.W. MORSE" address which reads toward muzzle, all markings in metal remain clear and legible. The barrel and magazine retain a pleasing smooth brown patina overall and remain quite smooth and generally free of pitting. The action shows the same smooth brown patina and features the dust cover with two reinforcing screws and second gas escape hole. The walnut buttstock and forend show some nice figure and rate very good as refinished with a glossy varnish finish. The rifle is sighted with a German silver blade Rocky Mountain front and open sporting rear sights. A very interesting and scarce Burgess Morse sporting rifle. (18315-8LTS40) {ANTIQUE} [Lewis T. Steadman Collection]

Colt Burgess Lever Action Sporting Rifle

Lot # 44 (Sale Order: 44 of 1114)

serial #1496, 44-40, 25 1/2" round barrel with full magazine and a very good bore that shows deep rifling along with some scattered old oxidation. The metal surfaces of this rifle retain 97% old nicely restored blue finish. The barrel markings and Rampant Colt on left side of action remain strong and fully visible. The color is slightly more dull than original Colt blue as the polish was not as fine as the factory polish. The loading gate shows a good deal of period straw color and screw slots remain quite nice. The plain walnut buttstock and forend rate near excellent with a good deal of original finish and nice rich dark color. The stocks show some very light handling marks but they fit beautifully and show just one small crack at the end of the top tang that is very minor, sound and needs no attention. The rifle is sighted with a Marbles No. 3 beaded blade front sight and a Marbles folding leaf open sporting rear sight. This is a very attractive rifle that was beautifully restored long ago. Superb American Percussion Sporting and Target Rifle attributed to John Belknap of St. Johnsbury, VA

Lot # 45 (Sale Order: 45 of 1114)

.28 caliber, 28" octagon barrel is turned at the muzzle for a starter and shows a bright excellent bore. This rifle is just wonderful. The gun features an action made of what appears to be German silver with what appears to be an integral skeleton stock which is wrapped in leather which is finely sewn along the interior edge. The barrel has a steel ramrod channel which extends nine inches from the action with a pair of wonderful steel ramrod ferrules which are both finely knurled on each end. The lock fits into the German silver frame flawlessly and is engraved in beautiful relief floral scroll which also appears on the opposite side of the frame. The frame also shows lovely border treatment at both the barrel and the stock, the top of the action shows a sunburst and geometric patterns used by Nimschke and others. The triggerguard is a finger loop style, made of the same material as the action and shows some light scroll engraving as well. The top of the frame also has an integral peepsight base which holds a lollipop style adjustable sight. The rifle is also equipped with adjustable double set triggers which function properly. This rifle is unique in design and exhibits wonderful quality and it has tons of condition. The only making on the barrel is a very light and only partially visible "INGTON / T STEEL", the remnants of REMINGTON / CAST STEEL". The marking is light and the barrel was obviously shortened when Belknap made the rifle and part of the Remignton marking was obliterated, after finishing, the balance is light. The condition of the rifle is wonderful with the barrel retaining about 95% original brown finish with just a little silvering on the high edges. The action shows a lovely mellow patina and the lock is a very smooth and even gray patina. The rifle is sighted with a Beach combination front, beautifully crafted open sporting rear and the previously mentioned lollipop tang sight. What appears to be the original ramrod with nickel silver fittings on either end is present. The leather covering on the skeleton stock is excellent with a small area worn through the leather on the left side of the butt. This rifle is featured in Vermont's Gunsmiths & Gunmakers to 1900 by Harry Phillips and Terry Tyler. They state that due to the quality, attention to detail, workmanship and the rear sight they attribute the rifle to John Belknap. John Belknap was a fine craftsman and mechanical genius having designed and built water wheels and turbines that generated power, 17 of the "water motors" he sold to and installed for the city of Springfield, Mass. He also built several boats as well as a steam engine. Born in St. Johnsbury in 1840, his percussion rifles were later being made between 1879 and 1888. His life was cut short at the age of 48 when he drowned trying to clear a timber from a dam he was building across the Passumpsic River to power his shop. Regardless of who made this rifle, it stands on its own as a truly fabulous and likely unique American percussion sporting and target rifle. (18786-1) {ANTIQUE}

.34 cal, 33 3/4" part octagon part round barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel and under rib retain nearly all of their original lovely plum brown with some very minor wear along the sides of the round portion, and couple older very light pits near the muzzle. The lockplate and hammer show a nice mottled gray case-hardened patina with the hammer showing some very nice case colors. The stepped beveled lockplate shows light borderline engraving and loose open scroll at front and rear with open scroll up the hammer. There are two iron ramrod thimbles and a lightly sculpted ramrod tailpipe with a nice flat-bottomed triggerguard with dovetailed front and rear extensions and a single graceful rearward-curving grip flourish. The faceted buttplate is a warm plum brown patina, its screws neatly engraved. The American walnut stock rates very good plus with much original varnish and the expected light dings and handling marks from the years. The wrist is nicely, coarsely checkered, there is a flared left-side shadowline cheekpiece, lovely little horn forend tip and there is a simple oval-shaped German silver monogram plate atop the wrist, it is un-engraved. The arm is equipped with a single trigger and the lock functions well mechanically; what is likely the original ramrod is included (showing an old repair near its tip). Overall a very lovely, if Spartan, Krider rifle that would serve well as an investment but doubtless shoot extremely well also. (38812-2) {ANTIQUE}

The metal surfaces of this second contract rifle retain 90% original blue finish with a couple minor dings on the bottom of the magazine box, some further light dings on bolt and receiver, a few light freckling spots and scattered flaking to brown. The walnut stock rates very good with an older added varnish, a 2" abrasion on the right side above magazine, some light chipping at the toe, scattered dings and handling marks. The receiver is marked with the initials "J.N.J" for the Navy inspector Lt. John N. Jordan. A very fine example of these hard-to-find U.S. military rifles. (208737-353) {C&R} [Dr. Louis C.
