Lot # 1000 (Sale Order: 1 of 1003)

Excellent Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Musket

Winchester Third Model 1873 Musket manufactured circa 1903. The musket has the distinctive 30 inch barrel with full-length forearm, three barrel bands, block front sight base that serves as a lug for a socket bayonet, military style folding leaf rear sight and carbine buttplate. The middle barrel band and stock are fitted with sling swivels. The frame has the Third Model integral dust cover rail and a dust cover with serrated edges. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands and frame have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The hammer, loading lever and buttplate are casehardened. The straight grain American walnut stock and forearm are oil finished. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber "44 W.C.F" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel at the breech. "44 Cal." is roll-stamped in script letters on the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. "{MODEL 1873}" is roll-stamped on the upper tang in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the upper tang screw.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent. The musket is in original condition and shows minor handling and storage marks. There are four small spots of pitting on the right side of the receiver near the junction with the forearm and two smaller pitted spots on the lower left edge of the receiver at the forearm. There are two scuff marks on the top of the receiver near the dust cover rail and several light scratches on the left side of the receiver behind the side plate. The stock and forearm have several light storage marks but remain in excellent condition. This is an excellent example of a Third Model Winchester 1873 Musket.

Half Nickel Winchester Model 1876 Carbine, Bayonet, Madis Letter

Lot # 1002 (Sale Order: 3 of 1003)

Unusual Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine Fitted for a Bayonet with Saber Bayonet and George Madis Letter

Manufactured in 1880. The accompanying George Madis letter states Madis examined this Model 1876 carbine "inside and out" and found it to be "all original as made by Winchester in 1880." According to Madis, this Model 1876 will factory letter as being received in the warehouse on June 2, 1881 with nickel plated frame and saber bayonet. "Because of the special and unusual features," continued Madis, "there was a delay between the date of manufacture and the date the gun was received in the warehouse." Model 1876 carbines fitted with saber bayonets are exceedingly rare, and the bayonets are among the most sought after early Winchester accessories. The saber bayonet was more commonly reserved for Model 1876 muskets. Madis rightfully proclaimed "carbines with [bayonet fittings] are almost impossible to find" and this carbine was "one of the rarest Winchesters seen in over forty years of observing and studying Winchesters." In fact, Madis states that he had examined "more 1 of 1,000 Model 1876s than Model 76s made for saber bayonets" and "it is likely that another carbine with saber bayonet will not be found in the 1876 model." The correct and rare saber bayonet with the scabbard is included. The 20 inch blade is marked with "crown/C" and "crown/W" proofs. The 23 1/2 inch barrel has a carbine type front sight set farther back from the muzzle when compared to the standard 22 inch carbine barrel in order to accommodate the saber bayonet. The saber bayonet lug is on the right side of the forend cap. The barrel has a carbine type front sight, folding ladder rear sight, and the two-line Winchester address/King's improvement patent dates marking stamped on top. The carbine lacks caliber markings. A saddle ring is on the left side of the receiver. The dust cover has serrations on the tail and follows a guide rail secured to the receiver by two screws.

Class: Antique

Very good. The receiver retains 30% period replated nickel finish; otherwise, the carbine has a mottled brown-gray patina. The wood is also very good with a splice repair on the stock wrist (right side) and some minor to moderate dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is fine with the blade having a gray mottled patina and the brass has an attractive appearance. The leather covering on the scabbard shows some age cracking and some moderate handling/storage evidence. An unusual Winchester Model 1876 carbine missing from even the most advanced Winchester collections.

ATF Exempted Winchester Model 1892 Trapper Carbine with Letters

Lot # 1003 (Sale Order: 4 of 1003)

Rare 12 Inch Barrel Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Trapper Saddle Ring Carbine with ATF Exemption Letter and George Madis and R.L. Wilson Letters

Manufactured in 1912, this Winchester M1892 SRC has the extremely rare 12 inch barrel. The accompanying letter from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms lists this carbine as being removed from the purview of the National Firearms Act and classified as a curio and relic. This carbine's serial number is listed in the BATF Firearms Curios or Relic List on page 40. The included George Madis letter authenticates this carbine with an original factory 12 inch barrel. The included R.L. Wilson (photocopy) letter also authenticates this carbine and "ranks [it] as an extremely rare and desirable Winchester, worthy of the finest private or museum collection." According to Madis, "only one of each 325 carbines were made with shorter than standard barrels." Most of the baby carbines were shipped to Mexico and South America where they saw hard use. Very few have survived. In fact, it has been estimated that about five Model 1892s with 12 inch barrels exist; five 12 inch barreled 1892s, including this one, are listed by the BATF as being "cleared." The carbine features carbine sights, two-line address/patent dates marking and "38 W.C.F." on the left side of the barrel, factory oval proofs on top of the receiver and barrel at the breech, saddle ring on the left side of the receiver, three-line model/trade mark information on the upper tang, and carbine buttplate with trapdoor holding a three piece cleaning rod.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Good, with a mixture of dark brown and gray patinas and some faded period finish blue finish remaining on the magazine tube. There is some minor pitting visible under the blue. The forearm has a stabilized crack and the revarnished buttstock has a few short hairline cracks, otherwise the wood has a couple missing minor chips and some minor-moderate dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A very rare variation of the Model 1892 missing from even the most advanced Winchester collections.

Engraved Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Trapper Saddle Ring

Lot # 1005 (Sale Order: 6 of 1003)

Engraved Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Trapper Saddle Ring Carbine with ATF Exempted 14 Inch Barrel and George Madis Letter

Originally manufactured in 1915 and subsequently professionally engraved. The accompanying letter from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms lists this carbine as being removed from the purview of the National Firearms Act and classified as a curio and relic. This carbine's serial number is listed in the BATF Firearms Curios or Relic List on page 39 (a copy is included). In the included photocopy of a George Madis letter, the noted Winchester author stated, "I have carefully examined this fine carbine both inside and out and have determined it as an original Baby Carbine and was factory engraved by Winchester." Madis notes that the barrel is a factory replacement, circa 1929. But since the letter was written it has been determined that the engraving is custom. There are no factory letters available for this serial number range. The engraving on the receiver is similar to Winchester's Style 6, featuring fine scrollwork and game animal scenes inside circle panels. Scrollwork extends to the buttplate tang. It also has pinned blade and folding ladder sights, Winchester factory oval proof in the barrel and receiver, saddle ring on the left side of the receiver and smooth carbine stock. Comes with a Bucheimer soft case.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine as professionally embellished. The carbine retains 70% of the blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. There is some light to minor pitting. The refinished wood is also fine showing some scattered minor scratches and pressure dents. Mechanically excellent.

Very Fine. 70% of the original blue finish remains on the barrel and magazine with some very minor edge wear on the barrel at the muzzle. The Winchester legend is crisp. The dust cover retains about 80% of the bright blue finish. 80% of the fire blue finish is present on the loading port cover and trigger. The forearm cap has strong case colors. Ultra-Rare Documented Winchester "One of One Thousand" Deluxe

Lot # 1009 (Sale Order: 10 of 1003)

Ultra-Rare Documented Winchester "One of One Thousand" Deluxe Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This is an exceptional, totally original example of a documented Winchester One of One Thousand Model 1876 "Centennial Rifle" with Cody Firearms Museum letter. Winchester manufactured only 54 Model 1876 One of One Thousand rifles. The Model 1876 One of One Thousand rifles are significantly more rare than the 136 Model 1873 One of One Thousand rifles. The Cody letter describes "Model 1876, serial number 9768" as: "Rifle, 45/60, 26-inch, octagon barrel, Set trigger, Checkered stock, Casehardened", and "1 of 1000". The letter further states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on November 25, 1879. This rifle features the "Fourth Style" One of One Thousand engraving. The top barrel flat of this rifle is engraved "One of One Thousand" in a panel with dot and scallop borders and scrollwork flourish at the muzzle end. Scroll and punch-dot panels are engraved on the barrel flats at the receiver and muzzle. In addition, the barrel has a single platinum band inlaid on the the breech and muzzle. The rifle has the second style receiver with screw-fastened dust cover guide and dust cover with impressed, oval, finger guide. The full octagon barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and folding leaf rear sight calibrated to "10" and marked "1876" on the top of the leaf. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The receiver has a single set-trigger.The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line Winchester legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "CAL. 45-60" is hand engraved on the top barrel flat between the Winchester legend and the rear sight. "MODEl 1876." is roll-stamped in fancy letters on the upper receiver tang. "45-60" is roll-stamped in script numerals across the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number, "9768" is roll-stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. The barrel, magazine, barrel band and trigger have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The loading gate and dust cover are niter blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color case-hardened. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grain, walnut with the early style Winchester checkering and a piano finish. The Winchester One of One Thousand Model 1876 and Model 1873 rifles are the best known and most desirable of all Winchester firearms. "One of One Thousand" is closely associated with Model 1873 rifles due to the 1950 movie "WINCHESTER '73" and subsequent Winchester factory promotions to take advantage of the movie publicity. However, advanced collectors understand that One of One Thousand Model 1876 rifles are far rarer and at least as valuable as the Model 1873 rifles. In "WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" published in 1975, author R.L. Wilson noted that "about 40" Model 1873 One of One Thousand rifles had been located but only TEN Model 1876 One of One Thousand rifles were known to collectors. The Model 1876 Winchester One in One Thousand rifles are almost certainly the the rarest and most desirable Winchester lever action rifles.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 85% plus of the original blue finish with some very minor high point wear. The "One of One Thousand" markings and scroll and punch-dot engraving on the breech and muzzle are extremely sharp. The inlaid platinum bands on the breech and muzzle are excellent and tarnished. The factory legend and caliber designation are crisp. The magazine has a 1-inch spot of discoloration on the left side about 2-inches below the barrel band. The loading gate has 80% of the fire blue finish remaining. The delicate niter blue finish on the dust cover shows handling wear and is 30% intact with the balance a silver-gray patina. The forearm cap retains 75% of the faded case colors. The receiver has 80% strong case colors on the top, bottom, right front and sideplates with some scattered patches of age discoloration. The left front of the receiver has two spots of shallow pitting which were cleaned long ago removing two small areas of case color each about 3/4-inch in length. The upper tang shows expected handling wear and has a smooth silver patina. Nearly 90% of the muted case colors are present on the hammer. The lever has some silvering on the contact points on the bottom and right side with stronger case colors on the left side. The buttplate has strong case colors on the heel with silvering and minor age spotting on the bottom. The well-figured walnut stock and forearm remain excellent with nearly 90% of the original piano finish intact and sharp checkering. W

The main special order features on this carbine are the smooth bore 44 W.C.F. chambering and the button magazine. The actual bore diameter measures .420, so that indicates the barrel was never rifled by the factory validating the authenticity of this barrel. It has a half length or button magazine, and it is fitted with a very rare short yardage Winchester Express rear sight. This sight is rarely encountered and is calibrated for 50, 100 and 200 yards, with each sight leaf having a small platinum sighting line. The left side of the receiver is fitted with a factory saddle ring and staple. The top left side of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884.", with the caliber designation "44 W.C.F." at the breech. The rear of the barrel and top of the receiver are stamped with the oval Winchester "W/P" proofmark. The serial number, "770947", is stamped on the underside of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is marked "MODEL 1892/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK". Blue finish with casehardened hammer and lever and mounted with a smooth beautiful straight grain forearm and straight grip stock with a checkered hard rubber shotgun style buttplate. No records are available to writer at time of description, but the gun is undoubtedly original!

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent. The carbine retains 85% plus of the original blue finish showing a slight amount of blue flaking off on the front underside and top receiver ring of the action and barrel band. The barrel retains 98% of its original factory blue finish. The lever and hammer retain 50% of its original factory case colors. The wood is excellent with nearly all of the original factory varnish and showing some minor handling marks, with a tight wood to metal fit. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.

Extremely Rare Documented Factory Engraved Deluxe Winchester

Lot # 1014 (Sale Order: 15 of 1003)

Extremely Rare Documented Factory Engraved Deluxe Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Factory engraved Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured c. 1875. This rifle is accompanied by a Winchester Gun Museum letter dated 1967 that describes Model 1873, serial number 15828, as: "rifle, octagon barrel, casehardened, fancy checkered stock, set trigger." The letter further states that the rifle has $5.00 engraving and was shipped from Winchester on May 6, 1878. This rifle is illustrated and briefly described on page 102 of "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson and on page 414 of "Winchester's New Model of 1873, Vol. II" by James D. Gordon. Both Wilson and Gordon note that this rifle was factory engraved by Gustave Young. The rifle has the very desirable First Model receiver with grooved dust cover guides and dust cover with checkered oval finger grip. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine and trigger with color casehardened forearm cap, receiver, dust cover, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The loading gate is fire blue. The stock and forearm are deluxe, fancy grain walnut with the early style Winchester checkering and a piano finish. The forearm cap, dust cover, sides and top of the receiver, upper tang and buttplate heel are decorated with restrained but elegant scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The Wilson description notes that Gustave Young engraved "precisely the same" scrollwork on Smith & Wesson firearms during this period. The full-octagon barrel has a special order Beach folding combination globe front sight and a buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped and the receiver has a single set-trigger. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor, and the butt trap contains a jointed, four-piece, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL. 1873" in fancy letters flanked by scrollwork flourishes. The serial number is engraved in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and rear tang screw. Winchester rifles factory engraved reportedly by Gustave Young are very rare.

Class: Antique

Very fine. This rifle is all original and retains at least 85% of the blue and color casehardened finish. 85% the original blue finish is present on the barrel. The blue has some minor discoloration on the right side between the rear sight and the muzzle. The blue on the magazine has faded to a plum-colored patina on contact points. The Winchester legend is crisp. The forearm cap, dust cover, receiver and hammer retain 75% plus of the muted casehardened finish with scattered traces of age discoloration and some silvering on contact points. The lever has strong case colors on the sides with some silvering on the bottom. About 80% of the case colors on the buttplate remain and have aged to a dark, mottle patina with traces of pitting on the edge of the buttplate toe and heel. The loading gate retains at least 90% of the fire blue finish. The brass cartridge elevator has an attractive, untouched patina. The flawlessly engraved scrollwork is crisp. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are both in very fine condition and show only minimal handling and a long heavy scratch at right upper wrist in the checkering. The stock and forearm display the same untouched patina as the other components and retain 90% plus of the piano finish and sharp checkering. This is a truly outstanding example of an extremely rare Winchester First Model 1873 rifle with factory engraving by Gustave Young.

Interesting Early Production Winchester Model 1866 Carbine

Lot # 1015 (Sale Order: 16 of 1003)

Interesting Early Production Winchester Model 1866 Carbine with Henry Patent Barrel Address and Japanese Registration Markings

Winchester Model 1866 carbine manufactured circa 1867. The carbine has the Second Model features which include: (1) flared receiver at the junction with the forearm, (2) single upper tang screw, and (3) indented loading gate. The hammer has a hand-knurled spur and no half-cock feature. The Second Pattern stock has a 3 1/2-inch wrist and is fitted with the early Henry style crescent buttplate with hinged trap and no reinforcing web. The barrel has a front band with integral steel sight blade and a Henry style folding leaf rear sight with elevation bar stop screw. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "HENRY'S PATENT-OCT. 16. 1860/KING'S-PATENT-MARCH 29. 1861" ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped beneath the stock on the left side of the lower receiver tang. A second serial number, "14806", is stamped on the inside of the stock in the upper tang inlet and on the inside of the buttplate. A line of eight Japanese characters is stamped on the right side of the stock parallel to the lower tang, and four additional characters are stamped on the right side of the stock toward the butt. The rifle is accompanied by an article published in "THE WINCHESTER COLLECTOR" by Francis Allan, Chip Goddard and Takehito Jimbo entitled "HENRY RIFLES & WINCHESTER CARBINES IN JAPAN - FOLLOW-UP". The article states that, 5000 Winchester Model 1866 carbines were shipped to Japan in 1867 and identifies some of the Japanese registration marks stamped on the stocks of Model 1866 carbine serial numbers 15465, 17994 and 18672. Included with the carbine is a letter dated May 20, 2007, that describes how this carbine was purchased from a resident of Tombstone, Arizona, who claimed to have found it while exploring an abandoned mine during the 1920s.

Class: Antique

Fine. The carbine barrel, magazine and bands have 20% blue with the balance a smooth plum-brown patina. The barrel markings are legible and the rear sight is complete and appears to be original to the carbine. The brass buttplate has a good-looking, unpolished patina. The fine receiver shows minimal handling or storage wear and the side plate joints are perfect. The buttplate has a number of minor dents and scratches. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm are both in fine overall condition with a number of minor handling marks. The Japanese registration marks on the right side of the stock are lightly struck and only partly legible. The stock and buttplate apparently came from a different carbine. However, the proximity of the receiver and stock numbers indicates that the barrel/receiver and stock/buttplate both came from Japanese Model 1866 carbines and were period mis-matched. This is a fine example of an early production Winchester Model 1866 saddle ring carbine with rarely encountered Japanese registration markings and a colorful but unsubstantiated history.

The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel, matted top barrel flat, casehardened receiver, checkered pistol grip stock, hard rubber buttplate, and a factory engraving on forend cap and hammer that cost $2.50 when it was received in the warehouse on March 29, 1882, and shipped on April 1, 1882, along with one other rifle with the same specifications.(It does not list the 50 express caliber!) Class: Antique

Very good. The barrel and magazine tube retain 25% faded original blue finish and the hammer, receiver, and lever retaining areas of mixed faded and silvered out original case colors. Traces of original nitre blue finish remain on the loading gate. The wood is fair with a repaired buttstock, smooth, heavily worn checkering, and some minor-moderate handling evidence. Mechanically excellent. One will have to draw their own conclusion on the 50 express caliber not being listed in the factory letter! It is however, a very unique opportunity to acquire a very desirable variation of a factory engraved Winchester Model 1876 Rifle!

Excellent. This stunning rifle is all original. The barrel and magazine tube retains 95% of the original blue finish with traces of edge wear at the muzzle and some thinning on the magazine band. The Winchester legend is extremely crisp. The dust cover and loading gate cover have 98% the original nitre blue finish while the dust cover rail and bolt show expected finish wear but retain the niter blue. The receiver and forearm cap show only minimal wear and retain 90% plus of the original casehardened finish with very strong case colors. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever are more muted, but they retain close to 95% finish. The buttplate has 85% of the case colors with some finish loss and traces of light pitting on the contact points of the toe and heel. The special front sight, standard rear sight and special order tang sight are in excellent condition and retain close to 95% of the original blue finish. It would be hard to improve on this rare and stunning Model 1876 rifle.

Very Scarce New Haven Arms Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

Lot # 1018 (Sale Order: 19 of 1003)

Very Scarce New Haven Arms Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

This exceptional Volcanic Lever Action Carbine with 16-1/2 inch barrel was manufactured by Oliver Winchester's New Haven Arms Company between 1857 and 1860. The diminutive carbine has a blued octagon barrel and integral magazine. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade. The receiver and crescent buttplate are brass, the loading lever has a high polish blue finish, and the hammer is casehardened. The receiver has a dovetail mounted sporting style rear sight with thumb wheel elevator and niter blue finish. The walnut stock has a high polish varnished "piano" finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the one-line legend: "NEWHAVEN CONN PATENT FEB.14.1854" adopted by the New Haven Arms Company after Oliver Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in April 1857. The carbine serial number is stamped on the heel of the stock beneath the buttplate, on the inside of the buttplate, on the shanks of both hand fitted buttplate screws, on the lower left side of the receiver tang, and on the lower tang screw. The shanks of the upper tang screws are both numbered "60". The New Haven Arms Company manufactured approximately 1000 carbines with 16 1/2, 21 and 25-inch barrels between 1857 and 1860. These carbines are scarce and historically important; both as one of the first successful repeating arms to utilize a self-contained cartridge and as the forerunners of the Henry and Winchester lever action rifles.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrel retains 85% plus of the original blue finish. The balance of the blue has aged to a deep plum-colored patina. There is some minor edge wear on high points and traces of age discoloration on the left side of the magazine near the muzzle. The legend on the top barrel flat is sharp. The sharp brass receiver and buttplate have a very attractive patina that is indicative of age and limited handling. The receiver and buttplate are both in excellent condition with only very minor storage marks. The lever, cartridge block, and sight retain a strong 75% of the original nitre blue finish. The hammer still retains most of its beautiful and original casehardened finish. The stock is excellent plus with nearly all of the "piano" finish varnish and very minor pressure marks from storage. This is an excellent example of a scarce and historically important New Haven Arms Company Volcanic carbine

Desirable U.S. Civil War Contract Martially Inspected New Haven

Lot # 1024 (Sale Order: 25 of 1003)

Desirable U.S. Civil War Contract Martially Inspected New Haven Arms Co., Henry Lever Action Rifle

This is a very scarce example of one of the 800 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in December 1863 from the New Haven Arms Company. These rifles were mostly issued to the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry Regiment which was utilized for provost duty in the District of Columbia under the direct control of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. In early 1864 the 1st D.C. Cavalry's primary mission was to combat Confederate partisan rangers led by John S. Mosby operating in northern Virginia. The 800 Henry rifles in the 1st D.C. Cavalry contract are in the 3000-4000 serial number range are the only Henry rifles marked with Ordnance inspection marks on the stock and barrel. This rifle has the distinctive brass buttplate and receiver with 24-inch barrel and integral 15-shot magazine that identify standard production Henry rifles. The second style receiver introduced around serial number 3000 lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail found on Henry rifles manufactured in 1862 and 1863. The first pattern crescent buttplate, used until about serial number 5100, has a rounded heel. The barrel has a half moon, nickel silver, front sight blade and period replacement buckhorn rear sight. The magazine has a period replacement head. The rifle has a straight grain American walnut stock. The buttplate contains a four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The left side of the stock and barrel, correctly, are not fitted with a sling swivel and sling loop which were special order features not included on most U.S. contract Henry rifles. The "C.G.C." initials of Ordnance Inspector Charles G. Chapman are stamped on the right barrel flat at the junction with the receiver. Chapman's script final inspection marks is not visible on the right stock wrist (this mark was stamped in a location that typically received handling wear and is rarely visible on U.S. contract Henry rifles). An "H" New Haven Arms sub-inspection mark is stamped on the barrel immediately below the "C.G.C." mark. Two "H" inspection marks are stamped on the right side of the receiver immediately behind the barrel markings. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the first style legend "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860./MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." in two lines ahead of the rear sight dovetail. This style address was utilized through the mid-late 3000 serial number range and had "NEWHAVEN" in the second line stamped in block letters. The serial number is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat behind the rear sight, (2) on the lower left side of the receiver tang beneath the stock, (3) on the inside of the buttplate, and (4) on the shanks of both hand-fitted buttplate screws.

Class: Antique

Good. The barrel and integral magazine are smooth with sharp edges; traces of the original blue finish remain in the protected areas with the balance having faded to an attractive, plum brown, patina. The original legend, serial number and inspection marks are all sharp. The brass receiver and buttplate are in good condition with an attractive aged patina. The receiver has scattered minor handling marks. The side plate joints are tight. The buttplate has some scattered age spotting with scattered handling marks. The hammer retains 25% of the original casehardened finish. The case colors on the lever have aged to a brown patina. The walnut stock is in good overall condition with moderate handling wear. There is a small chip in the lower right side of the wrist at the junction with the receiver and a hairline crack that extends from the end of the receiver tang about four inches toward the buttplate. The rear sight and magazine follower are well crafted period replacements. Surviving examples of the 800 government inspected Henry rifles issued to the 1st D.C. Cavalry are rare and typically display wear associated with combat use. This is a solid, original example of one of the most important and desirable Civil War firearms.
