Exceptional Documented Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter

This Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine has a factory letter that describes it as "Type: Carbine" and states that the serial number was applied on July 12, 1886, the carbine was received in the warehouse on July 21, 1886, and shipped on May 7, 1887. This Fourth Model carbine has a single upper tang screw and has the serial number stamped in script numerals on the lower tang behind the lever latch. The barrel has the second style upper band. A steel block front sight is located immediately behind the upper barrel band. The carbine has the late style folding leaf rear sight marked "1873" at the top of the leaf. The magazine has the late threaded cap with retaining screw. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The late, indented loading port is retained by a single screw. The hammer spur has fine knurling enclosed in a decorative border. The stock has a steel carbine/musket style buttplate with sliding trapdoor. The butt trap contains a three-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod. The barrel, magazine and barrel bands have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The loading gate is a fiery niter blue. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The right side of the brass receiver is hand-stamped: "L&W BC/CO" in two lines below the hammer. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The first line of the legend uses serif letters, and the second line is stamped in block letters. "44 CAL" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The bottom of the cartridge elevator is roll-stamped: "44 CAL." in script letters and numerals. Caliber markings on carbine barrels and cartridge elevators are rare and usually only encountered on carbines with serial numbers above 160,000.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. This carbine is all original and retains 85% plus of the bright original blue and finish overall. Wear is limited to some thinning on the top of the barrel behind the rear sight and some scattered age spotting. The barrel bands have 60% of the blue finish with high point wear on the sides. The barrel legend and caliber markings are crisp. The brass receiver is in excellent condition with near perfect side-plate joints, minimal handling wear and a very attractive, un-polished patina. All markings are sharp. The loading gate retains 80% of the original niter blue finish. The hammer shows some cycling wear on the right side, and the bottom of the lever shows suggestions of silvering. The hammer, lever and trigger retain 60% of the muted case colors. The case colors on the buttplate have aged to a mottled brown patina with light pitting on the toe and heel. The stock and forearm remain in very fine condition with most of the original oil finish remaining. Wear is limited to scattered minor handling and storage marks. This is a top condition example of a Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine.

The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes this Model 1873 as: "Rifle, 28-inch Octagon barrel, Set trigger, Checkered stock with xxx wood" and "Nickel Receiver". The receiver, dust cover and cartridge elevator are nickel-plated. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEL. 1873." in fancy letters. The serial number is stamped in script numerals between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. There are, correctly, no caliber markings on the barrel or cartridge elevator.

Class: Antique

Very fine. The barrel and magazine retain 60% of the original blue finish with light edge wear and small scattered spots of age discoloration. The Winchester legend is crisp. The case colors on the forearm cap, hammer and lever have faded to a mottled gray-brown with 40% of the original finish remaining. The buttplate has a dark brown patina with scattered age discoloration. The receiver, dust cover and cartridge elevator retain 70% of the nickel-plated finish with light-moderate handling wear on contact points. The loading gate retains about 50% of the fire blue finish. The 3x, fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are all in fine condition. The satin finish has a dark age patina with scattered minor handling marks. The checkered panels have light-moderate handling wear and remain in very good overall condition. This is a very good example of a desirable, early production First Model 1873 Winchester rifle with extremely rare nickel-plated receiver and other special order features.

Documented U.S. Contract New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action R

Lot # 3002 (Sale Order: 3 of 874)

Documented U.S. Contract New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry Rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. as part of the Ordnance Department order for 500 Henry rifles on April 7, 1865. The serial number of this rifle is listed in the serial numbers of Henry rifles reported by Companies B, C, I, H, and K of the 3rd Regiment U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry (VVI) in 1865 ("The Historic Henry Rifle" by Wiley Sword, page 75). In April and May 1865, the Ordnance Department purchased 627 Henry rifles to arm the 3rd VVI. The 3rd VVI was one of four infantry regiments recruited from discharged veterans in 1864-65 to serve as an elite infantry corps under Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. These regiments were armed with Henry, Spencer and Sharps rifles. In addition to a substantial enlistment bonus, volunteers for the VVI regiments were allowed to retain their issue rifles when mustered out of service. The Civil War ended before the VVI regiments saw any significant action. The 627 Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in April-May 1865 and the 1100 Henry rifles procured to arm the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry Regiment (1st DC Cavalry) in 1863 and 1864 were the only Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department during the Civil War. Only the 800 rifles ordered for the 1st D.C. Cavalry on December 30, 1863, were marked with Ordnance final inspection marks. This rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine which identify Henry rifles. The rifle has the late production features which include: (1) nickel-silver, square back front sight blade, (2) folding leaf rear sight with elevation bar stop screw and "900" mark below the center notch, (3) large diameter brass magazine follower, (4) beveled magazine follower slot, (5) sling swivel on the left side of the stock and screw-fastened loop for sling hook on the left side of the barrel, (6) brass buttplate with sharp pointed heel and (7) large, second style, New Haven Arms Co., legend that uses all serif letters. In addition to the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate, this rifle originally had a blued barrel/magazine with casehardened, hammer, trigger and lever. The stock is straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The hammer has coarse, border-less knurling. The buttplate has a hinged trapdoor. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT" in two lines with serif letters ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is located: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower receiver tang beneath the stock, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style cap screws on the buttplate and tang are, correctly, not marked with the rifle serial number. The "H" inspection mark of B. Tyler Henry is stamped on the lower tang between the lever latch and rear tang screw. A tiny "J.T." Ordnance sub-inspection mark is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. This mark is the only Ordnance inspection mark found on the Henry rifles purchased by the Ordnance Department in 1865.

Class: Antique

Very good plus. The rifle is nearly all original. However, the barrel magazine, hammer, lever and trigger are all bright leaving these components with a silver-gray patina. The barrel surfaces are generally smooth with traces of light pitting near the muzzle. The rear sight is in very good condition with sharp markings. The New Haven Arms Co. legend and serial number are crisp. The very fine brass receiver remains in very fine condition with perfect side plate joints, very little handling wear and an attractive looking patina. The brass buttplate is also in very fine condition with some very fine scratches on the toe and heel. The walnut stock is very fine with minimal handling wear and has most of the original oil finish with an excellent "bump" visible under the swivel. The tiny Ordnance sub-inspection mark on the left wrist is crisp and fully legible. This is a nice documented U.S. 2nd Contract Henry rifle.

Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1894 Takedown Rifle

Lot # 3003 (Sale Order: 4 of 874)

Desirable Factory Engraved Antique Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Lever Action Takedown Rifle with Specially Requested Engraved Crest and Factory Letter

The factory letter lists this fascinating rifle as .30 caliber, 1/2 octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman sights, no rear sight dovetail, 1/2 magazine, takedown, extra light, $2.00 engraving, "customer engraving (design)," and indicates it was received in the warehouse and shipped on December 13, 1898, in order number 15369 and returned and repaired on September 28, 1901, work order number 11965. The copy of the factory ledger also notes that it was engraved with a crest which is a rarity on factory engraved Winchesters. The receiver has beautiful scrollwork throughout (style 10 engraving on the right) and details crest consisting of a collared demi-dog dexter with three separate flowers (appear to be tulips) over a torse suspended above the dog's head and the motto "SEMPER PARATUS" in a banner below the dog. The crest is centered in a round panel. This panel contains a deer scene on multiple Model 1894 rifles shown in "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. The finely detailed engraving may have been done by John Ulrich but is unsigned. Regardless, it is certainly the quality of the work of a very talented engraver. Semper Paratus, meaning "Always Ready/Prepared," has been the motto of several families, a variety of civilian organizations such as fire departments, and multiple military organizations, including the U.S. 24th Infantry Regiment (a "Buffalo Soldier" unit that fought in the Spanish-American War including the Battle of San Juan Hill the same year this rifle was manufactured), U.S. 16th Infantry Regiment (also combatants at San Juan Hill), and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service starting in 1896. The latter evolved into the modern Coast Guard which still uses the motto. The rifle has a beaded Lyman blade front sight, "-MODEL 94-WINCHESTER-NICKEL STEEL-30 W.C.F.-/TRADE MARK-" on the upper left barrel flat (indicating it was rebarreled post-1919), a Marble tang peep sight, close coupled set triggers, checkered stock and forearm with sling eyes, hard rubber grip cap, and steel nose cap and buttplate. The rifle has the Winchester "WP" proofmarks suggesting the rifle was sent back a second time and was rebarreled at the factory.

Class: Antique

Very fine overall as factory rebarreled/refurbished with 95% blue and casehardened finish, crisp markings and engraving, and minor marks and scratches. The very fine wood has attractive figure primarily on the butt, crisp checkering, mild scratches and dings, and glossy varnish. Mechanically excellent. This is a very interesting and attractive factory engraved special order Model 1894. Model 1894s with factory engraved crests or other personalized inscriptions are very rare and hard to come by.

This includes the accompanying cotton Winchester placed in the barrel to prevent corrosion. It is a deluxe third model, featuring a dust cover guide rail integral to the receiver and dust cover featuring serrated finger grip on the rear. There is a tang mounted peep sight. "38 CAL." is marked on the brass cartridge elevator. The lower tang has the serial number. The barrel, full length magazine, dust cover, trigger and loading gate are blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever, and crescent buttplate are casehardened, exhibiting fiery case colors. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, deluxe grain walnut with high polish piano finish and finely checkered panels. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor containing a four-piece steel cleaning rod.

Class: Antique

Excellent plus, near new. The rifle retains 99% plus original blue, vivid casehardened and varnish finishes, only showing its age on the tip of the magazine tube (series of scratches) and some fading on the buttplate and left side of the receiver. The case colors are vivid and remain 99% complete. The wood is of equal stunning condition showing limited minor handling/storage marks. The checkering is crisp. Mechanically excellent with the exception of the trigger not setting. This Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 rifle would be a centerpiece in the finest collection of Winchester firearms. The Poet Scout Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 3007 (Sale Order: 8 of 874)

Historic Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine Identified as Owned by Captain Jack Crawford, the Poet Scout, with Family Documentation and Book

This fascinating Winchester carbine was manufactured in 1880 and has the standard block style blade front sight, notch and folding leaf rear sight, Second Model frame with replacement dust cover with "thumb print" on top and no serrations,"Model. 1873" in fancy script on the upper tang, single set trigger, script serial number on the lower tang, no caliber markings, and smooth stock and forearm. It comes with a binder full of documents relating to Crawford and the carbine (including an R.L. Wilson authentication letter) as well as a copy of "The Poet Scout" signed "Yours Fraternal, J.W. Crawford/Capt Jack" inside along with the note "Sept 2nd 1889/With 50 Apaches on way to St Joseph Exposition" and two other notes and initials. Among the documents is a list of items loaned for the 100th Anniversary of Fort Bliss by Irene Shontz, Captain Jack's granddaughter, listing the carbine by serial number as "Winchester gun used by Captain Jack in 'West' Shows." A letter signed this same granddaughter in 1962 when this carbine was sold also identifies it by serial number as belonging to her her grandfather. Captain Jack Crawford's life was very much filled with adventure in the Wild West, and he, like his one time friend Buffalo Bill Cody, capitalized on the boom of interest in and romanticization of the American frontier and solidified his place in history in the late 19th century and early 20th century as the western frontier ceased to exist and historians such as Theodore Roosevelt and Frederick Jackson Turner debated the significant role the frontier played in American national identity, culture, and government. "The Poet Scout" was born John Wallace Crawford in 1847 in Ireland and came to the U.S. when he was 14 right at the beginning of the Civil War. As was the case with many young immigrants, he was devoted to his new country. He joined the 48th Pennsylvania Infantry when he turned 17 and was wounded at both Spotsylvania and Petersburg. His mother died two years after the war, and his father was an alcoholic, so Crawford was responsible for his own way in life. In 1875, he headed to the West to seek his own fortune and adventure. During the Black Hills Gold Rush, he served as both a journalist in the camps and as the lead scout of the Black Hills Rangers. Since the Black Hills were and are sacred land to the Lakota and had not been ceded to the U.S., the rangers had the perilous task of defending the community from Native American attacks. During the famous Bighorn and Yellowstone Expeditions, he acted as a war correspondent and a scout under Brigadier General George Crook. While serving under Crook, he became friends with Buffalo Bill Cody and became head scout when Cody returned to the East. Crawford gained national fame after riding 350 miles in just six days in order to deliver news of Crook’s triumph over Chief American Horse at the Battle of Slim Buttes in September 1876 during the Great Sioux War the same month as Custer's infamous defeat. Later that same year, Crawford joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, but the partnership was short lived, and Crawford left the show in he summer of 1877 after he was shot in the groin at in Virginia City, Nevada, during a mock running horse battle by a drunken Buffalo Bill according to his account of the event. Given Crawford was a teetotaler, it is easy to imagine that he would have been particularly incensed at being nearly killed by a drunk he considered his close friend. He moved his family to New Mexico as a result and worked as a scout during the Apache War and Victorio’s War. He also served a trader at Fort Craig. In 1889, he worked on behalf of the U.S. government to investigate the illegal trafficking of alcohol in Indian Country. In the 1890s and early 20th century, he again gained national attention by speaking and performing throughout the U.S. He was reported to have regularly appeared armed with a Winchester, this very one as laid out by his granddaughter, while he told his tales. Unlike the stories told by many of the West's legendary characters, his speeches, poems, and stories are much more aligned with the realities of frontier life, but they also reflected popular beliefs in American exceptionalism, rugged individualism, the triumph of "civilization" triumph over "savagery," and the American people's "Manifest Destiny" to see their stars and stripes hung across the full width of North America. Crawford wrote over one hundred stories, seven books of published poetry (plus untold numbers of unpublished poems), and four plays. He was naturally the star of the latter. He stopped touring for a couple of years to search for gold in the Klondike at the turn-of-the-century.

Winchester 1866 Rifle Early Production

Lot # 3008 (Sale Order: 9 of 874)

Extraordinary Inscribed Early Production Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle with Desirable Henry Patent Barrel Address and Fancy Wood

Manufactured in 1868. This rifle has the Second Model features which include flared receiver edge at the junction with the forearm and single upper tang screw. The serial number is stamped in block numerals on the lower tang behind the trigger. The rifle has a full octagon barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has a steel dovetail mounted front sight and Henry style folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch and elevator bar stop screw. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the early marking "HENRY'S-PATENT-OCT. 16. 1860/KING'S-PATENT-MARCH 29. 1866." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The left side plate is inscribed "E.C. Moore/- from -/H.C. Crane" in light script engraving. Published in 1887, the “Proceedings of the Twentieth Annual Convention of the American Institute of Architects” lists both E.C. Moore and H.C. Crane as honorary members for life (contributed $100 to the library fund) and living in Yonkers, New York. The convention was held in New York City from December 1-2, 1886. The name H.C. Crane is linked to a late 1860s New York railroad report. Crane is listed as the treasurer for the Adirondack Company, a railway that originally connected Saratoga Springs to North Creek, New York. The name E.C. Moore is linked to a civil engineer and turn of the century construction company building railway lines in the northeast. Perhaps this rifle was presented to Moore by a grateful Crane at the conclusion of a collaboration between the two men in a railway construction project. The rifle has the distinctive brass forearm cap, receiver and Henry style curved buttplate. The early style forearm cap has an integral sling swivel boss. The forearm is secured by a screw that passes through the lower part of the barrel from left to right. The buttplate has a sharply pointed heel with hinged brass trapdoor. The hammer has hand-cut, borderless knurling on the spur and lacks a half-cock notch. Factory sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. The butt trap contains a four-piece steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with a piano finish. Fancy grade walnut stocks and forearms are very rare on Model 1866 rifles. The barrel, magazine and barrel bands have a blue finish. The loading gate is a fiery niter blue. The sling swivels, hammer, trigger and lever have a muted color casehardened finish.

Class: Antique

Excellent. This rare Model 1866 rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel, magazine and barrel band. Wear is limited to some finish loss on the barrel edges and some tiny spots of age discoloration on the barrel flats. The barrel legend is crisp. The rear sight has sharp markings. The loading gate retains nearly 90% of the fire blue finish. The hammer, trigger and lever have 60% of the muted original case colors remaining; the sides of the hammer have some cycling marks and the bottom of the lever shows some discoloration and age spotting. The brass forearm cap, receiver and crescent buttplate are in excellent condition. The brass has a beautiful, untouched, patina. The lightly cut inscription on the left side-plate is crisp. The side plate joints are perfect. The surfaces of the forearm cap, receiver and buttplate are free from scratches or handling marks, The highly figured fancy walnut stock and forearm remain in excellent condition and retain 95% of the high polish piano finish. Wear is limited to a few very insignificant handling and storage marks. This is an exceptional example of an early production Winchester Model 1866 rifle with very rare fancy walnut stock and forearm and inscribed receiver.

Engraved Winchester Deluce Model 1895 Rifle, Factory Letter

Lot # 3010 (Sale Order: 11 of 874)

Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1900. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a barrel in .30 caliber, Lyman front and rear sights, checkered stock, and hard rubber shotgun buttplate when received in the warehouse on January 3, 1901 and shipped the next day. The rifle was returned to the factory for repair on April 4, 1901 and on January 21, 1902. Although the letter does not list the engraving, the engraving appears to be factory and a period clerical error resulted in the omission of the engraved notation in the factory ledger (It also could have been engraved when it was returned to factory). The receiver features a Winchester scroll engraving on a punch dot background and standard Winchester markings. The blade front sight rests on a "CHRISTY" marked ramp base. The rifle is also fitted with a folding two leaf Lyman rear sight and Lyman receiver sight. The nicely figured forearm and straight grip stock are checkered and feature an ebony forend tip insert and hard rubber Winchester shotgun buttplate. Model 1895s with factory engraving are tough to find. According to Winchester author and expert George Madis, "Engraved Models 95 are very rare; by the time the model 95 was introduced the cost of engraving had become quite high." Provenance: Tom Lewis Collection, Larry Orr Collection.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine, retaining 85% factory blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown. The barrel has been period shortened to the present length. The wood is fine with some minor dings and scratches and some scattered blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

The Cody letter describes this "Model 1872 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 38, Barrel Type: Octagon, Trigger: Set, Checkered stock with pistol grip", and "Casehardened". The receiver is fitted with a Winchester single set-trigger. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The receiver has the round top found on .38, .32 and .22 caliber Winchester Model 1873 rifles. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. "38 W.C.F." is stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The forearm cap, receiver and hammer retain 50% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The case colors on the lever and trigger have faded to a mottled brown patina. The buttplate shows more wear than the other components and has a gray-brown patina with light pitting on the toe and heel. The checkering on the pistol grip and forearm shows light-moderate handling wear but remains sharp. Civil War Era New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3013 (Sale Order: 14 of 874)

Civil War Era New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry Lever Action Rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in February 1864. The rifle has the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate and octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine. The barrel has the late style, square back, nickel-silver front sight blade and a dovetail mounted, folding leaf rear sight. The sight leaf has a rounded top with 900 yard center notch. The second style receiver lacks the alternate rear sight dovetail found on Henry receivers to about serial number 3000. The bottom of the receiver has the late, beveled magazine follower cut, and the magazine has the large diameter brass follower. The buttplate is the first style with rounded heel used until about serial number 5000. The buttplate has a hinged brass trapdoor. The left side of the stock and barrel have a factory sling swivel and screw mounted loop for a sling hook. The swivel and hook were originally special order features but were standard by early 1864. The straight grain American walnut stock has the varnished finish found on later production rifles. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the second style legend "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16, 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CT." in two lines. The second style legend, introduced in the late 3000 serial number range, is larger and has all Roman (serifed) characters rather than the smaller, first style legend with the combination of Roman and Gothic letters. The serial number is stamped: (1) on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the lower left side of the receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock, (4) on the inside of the buttplate and (5) on the shanks of both hand-fitted buttplate screws. All of the visible serial numbers match. The tang screws are, correctly, not serial numbered. Experts believe that most Henry rifles made before 1865 were privately purchased by individual federal soldiers who wanted the unprecedented firepower offered by the 15-shot Henry repeating rifle. The Henry rifle was especially popular with soldiers in Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky regiments. Many of these soldiers purchased Henry rifles from dealers in Louisville, Kentucky, and other mid-west cities in 1864 using re-enlistment bounties.

Class: Antique

Good. This rifle is all original and shows wear typical of a 'working' rifle used during the Civil War or on the post-war frontier. The barrel and magazine have a dark brown patina, the hammer and lever show traces of the original casehardened finish. The barrel markings and serial number are sharp. The rear sight is missing the elevation bar. The left side of the barrel has scattered dents and scratches and scattered light pitting. The receiver and butt plate have a dark, patina with a large patch of discoloration visible on left side, scattered minor scratches on the balance. The side plate joints are tight with some minor dents. The case colors on the hammer and lever have faded to a mottled brown patina. There is some minor pitting on the bottom of the lever. The stock is in good overall condition moderate-heavy handling wear and retains about 50% of the original varnish finish. This is a solid, original, example of a Henry rifle manufactured during the Civil War that probably was used during the Civil War or on the post-war frontier.

Historic Documented Winchester Factory Presentation First Model

Lot # 3014 (Sale Order: 15 of 874)

Historic Documented Winchester Factory Presentation First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle Presented to Firearms Inventor Edward Stabler with Factory Letter

This historic Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle was presented by the Winchester Arms Company to Edward Stabler, the inventor of the Stabler cut-off system. This is confirmed by a factory letter that states this rifle was shipped on September 21, 1875, order number 3722 with round barrel, set trigger, XXXX (4X) wood, beach sights, casehardened, and (remarks column) stabler. Post-Civil War Spencer carbines and rifles were equipped with Edward Stabler's cut-off mechanism that, when engaged, prevented the breechblock from moving far enough to chamber a cartridge from the buttstock magazine, thus allowing for the Spencer to be used as a single-shot arm. Stabler received a royalty of 25 cents for each arm fabricated with his magazine cut-off device, which became very popular with officers who believed the fire rate of the Spencer exhausted ammunition before it could be resupplied. Prior to inventing the cut-off device, Stabler had designed a spring assist for the Spencer blade ejector in 1864. The left side of the buttstock on this Model 1873 has a small representation plaque that reads, "PRESENTED/TO/Edward Stabler/BY THE/WINCHESTER ARMS CO." The included Winchester factory letter confirms that this rifle was presented to Stabler. The letter also confirms the rifle configuration, round barrel, set trigger, XXXX wood and casehardened receiver with beach sights at time of original shipment on September 21, 1875, order number 3722. This desirable First Model 1873 rifle has the distinctive dust cover held in place by grooved guides on either side of the top of the receiver, checkered oval finger grip on top of the dust cover and the lever latch with the visible screw threads. The dust cover construction is the primary difference between the various styles of Model 1873s. First Models are found in the 1 to about 31,000 serial number range of the Model 1873. The blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight are replacements with a peep sight mounted on the tang. An open dovetail sight is positioned behind the rear sight. The top of the barrel is stamped "WINCHESTERS-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." behind the rear sight and is an 1 1/4 inches from the receiver ring. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873", and the lower tang is marked with the serial number. The rifle is correctly without caliber markings. The rifle has a set trigger and sling swivels mounted on the buttstock and forend cap. The set trigger, 28 inch barrel, select walnut stock with checkering on the wrist and sling swivels were special factory features. Any special features are rare on the already rare First Model 1873 Rifles. Mounted on a nicely figured smooth walnut forearm and checkered straight grip stock with a steel forend cap, a period compass embedded on the underside of the buttstock ahead of the sling swivel and crescent buttplate. The buttplate has a compartment, which contains a pull through bore swab.

Class: Antique

Fine. The rifle retains original traces of original blue finish with the balance a smooth dark brown patina. The receiver has areas faded to a silver gray with flashes of original case colors mixed with a smooth dark brown patina. The wood is very fine with some minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. This rifle is a newly discovered treasure and is from the descendants of Edward Stabler.
