Matted rib. Birmingham Nitro proofs read "CORDITE 37-250 MAX". Color casehardened action & forend metal. Blued floorplate & furniture. Dbl. triggers. Ejectors. Lock up via dbl. underlugs w/ doll's head top fastener, intercepting sears & Westley Richards hinged top lever. Disk set strikers, which may be removed by unscrewing the intercepting sear screws. Action is decorated w/ wedges of acanthus scroll at bbl. & breech ends of action plus game scene vignettes on the center of action sides. Action bottom features acanthus scroll shield around the action screw w/ wedges in all 4 corners. Acanthus scroll decorates all furniture as well. Checkered walnut pistol grip stock w/ horn pistol grip cap. Undecorated initial oval, sling eye & red rubber English style pad. Stock stamped "MADE IN ENGLAND" just behind pistol grip. Mfg. 1923. LOP: 15". CONDITION: action retains better than 90% muted case colors. Blue shows minimal wear along the edges. Wood remains mildly proud to metal w/ a few compression marks showing in the body of the stock; though none are deep or through the finish. Areas of finish show traces of light crazing. Right checkering panel on stock displays 1" x 1/4" area of mildly flattened checkering. Forend shows some light checkering wear w/ very shallow crack at breech end of forend. Stocked w/ an attractive moderately figured walnut initial oval features monogram "MRE" in stylized script. Stock is finished w/ an exceptionally well done leather covered pad. Action is decorated w/ Purdey's trademark rose & scroll engraving & as a Pigeon gun, bbls. were finished w/ a matte blue rather than traditional bright blue. Hidden third fastener. Disk set strikers. Minimum measured wall thickness is .031" measured approx. 12 1/2" behind the muzzle of the left bbl. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: oak & leather case w/ Purdey label & charge label. Case includes 2 piece cleaning rod, Purdey marked snap caps, oil bottle, cleaning jags & ebony turn screws. Outside of hard case is embossed "Horace R Bonser Cincinnati Ohio". CONDITION: action retains faint case color w/ 95%+ bbl. blue from freshened finish. Trigger guard & lower tang have faded to 30% black. Wood has been lightly sanded to remove any scratches & remains excellent after freshening. Wood remains slightly proud to metal at lock plates. Bright shiny bores. (01-14993). This beautiful Rigby is stocked w/ rich high contrast English walnut & wears an English style leather covered recoil pad. Initial oval is engraved w/ an arm holding a sword. Right bore is marked ".729" & measures .735". Left bore marked ".740" & measures .739". Action is on face. LOP: 15". DAC:1 1/2". DAH: 2". No exception, the lines of this gun are breathtaking! The highly figured English walnut fitted to the action uses amber & charcoal colors to complement the sleek lines. Stocked to the fences. Mfg. 1960. Though crossover stocks have existed for many years in English guns, sidelocks are far less common than boxlocks. In making this a crossover, the locks were shaped w/ the curve to allow for greater bend. LOP: 14 5/8" over tradition English red pad. DAC: 1 3/8". DAH: 2". Cast off at comb: 1 1/4". Cast off at heel: 1 5/8". Minimum measured wall thickness: .028" measured in right bbl. 16" from breech, both bbls. measured in excess of .100" - 3" from breech. Weight: 6 lbs. Uncommon configuration consi...moresting of 2 rifle bbls. over lower center mounted shotgun bbl. SXS rib is marked "Rakosi Matyas", referring to the General Secretary of the Hungarian Communist Party 1945-1956. From 1945-1948, Matyas Rakosi was General Secretary of the Hungarian Communist Party. Later he was the General Secretary of the Hungarian Working People's Party from 1948-1956. He was aligned w/ Russian politics during Stalin's leadership. He served in the Austro-Hungarian Army during WWI & was captured on the eastern front. During his rule approx. 350,000 non communist officials & intellectuals were either arrested or killed. He was known for his self described "salami tactics" for removing non communist opposition by portraying his rivals as fascists or sympathizers. He would use these tactics to remove key individuals from non communist parties leaving communist sympathizers. As he put it, he destroyed his opposition in the country by "cutting them off like slices of salami". Ramp mounted combination front sight w/ single standing leaf rear sight. LOP: 13 5/8" over horn buttplate. DAC: 1 9/16". DAH: 2 11/16". Shotgun bore dia. is .630", choke restriction is .020". Weight w/ scope: 8 lbs., 14 oz. Color casehardened action. 1018. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Rifle has action patent use #177. Action is of early style takedown type w/ drift pin. Blued bbl. Checkered walnut capped pistol grip stock w/ horn buttplate. Checkered walnut Alex Henry style forend. Action features a decorative Celtic style border & a side lever cocking system. Safety is located in front of trigger inside the trigger guard bow. Gun is stocked w/ nicely figured walnut w/ deep amber & smoky highlights. This specific rifle complete with scope is pictured on page 149 of β€œThe British Falling Block Breech Loading Rifle from 1865” by Jonathan Kirton. CONDITION: action retains 60% original case colors w/ right side remaining vivid under the cocking lever, left side faded w/ muted patterns remaining. Bbl. retains 75% original blue w/ fading to gray overall but most noticeable where handled; as well bbl. shows scattered oxidation. Stock shows no cracks w/ crisp flat topped checkering & 90% finish remaining after older freshening. A few light scuffs or compression marks on toeline. Wood is even w/ metal.
