ADIRONDACK PRESENTATION GRADE FIRST MODEL

REPEATING RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF. NSN. Bbl. 28" of octagon to rnd. configuration. Very special Presentation Grade Model 1870 rifle that may be a prototype. Only marking on rif...morele is fancy script on top flat "O M Robinson Up Jay NY". Story verbally transferred from previous owners to current consignor identifies this as O.M. Robinson's personal rifle. Fire blued iron action is operated by pulling rearward on checkered wings around center mounted hammer. Action, floorplate, breechblock cover & fancy finger rest trigger guard have tasteful foliate engraving w/ fancy borders. Half length mag. held by engraved German silver band. Globe front sight, engraved elevator adj. rear sight & mid range vernier tang sight. There is a thin fiber shim between the vernier sight & tang. Cheekpiece stock of fancy American black walnut. Right side of stock has a German silver engraved circular lid patchbox w/ American eagle finial. Left side of stock has raised German silver running deer. German silver crescent buttplate, toeplate & trapdoor compartment located on toeline are engraved to match action. Model 1870 rifles w/ Type I actions are believed to have been manufactured by A.S. Babbitt, Plattsburgh, N.Y. Designed by violin maker Orville Moses Robinson born in Swanton, VT 1838, died 1916. Total production of both models is believed to be less than 600. The Adirondack Firearms Co. which may have been a marketing entity that held the patents was purchased by Winchester in 1874. CONDITION: bbl. & mag. tube retain over 90% lightly faded original blue. Fire blued action finish has largely faded to muted bronze, violet & blue hues w/ spots of brilliant fire blue still visible on bolt cover & floorplate. Original stock finish shows scattered scratches & sm. handling marks w/ sm. chips behind top tang & hairline crack extending from top tang into left side of wrist. German silver fittings & ornamentation show light tarnish. Rear sight elevator & globe sight aperture are not present. Clean bright bore w/ strong rifling. (01-14904/DS). ANTIQUE. $9,000-15,000.

German silver blade front sight w/ wheel adj. sporting rear sight having broken leaf. Top tang has open hole for lollipop sight. Forward section of breechblock is marked "PAT'd MAR. 10. 57 / EXTd FEB. 27. 71". Rear portion of block is marked "ROBINSON'S PAT. APR. 28. 72 / MF'd BY ADIRONDACK FIRE ARMS CO. / PLATTSBURGH. N.Y." Left side of receiver has "HD" stamping on cartridge adjuster w/ unusual vertical script "PT" marking in forward portion of engraving. Action is operated by lifting up knob on rear half of bolt & sliding rearward to cycle action. Designed by violin maker Orville Moses Robinson born in Swanton, VT 1838, died 1916. Total production of both models is believed to be less than 600. Adirondack Firearms Co. was purchased by Winchester in 1874 who never used the patents. CONDITION: brass action retains over 80% nickel finish. Bbl. & mag. tube have over 75% dull & lightly faded original blue. Original stock finish shows areas of crazing w/ scratches & handling marks. Sm. cracks are present at toe & bottom tang areas w/ sm. chips & hairline cracks present in top tang area. Cal. 31 Volcanic. S# 153. Bbl. 4" part rd. A rare early iron framed example mfg. by Smith & Wesson that later was the precursor to the later mfg. brass frame volcanic pis...moretols. Very few were likely produced, little is known about the quantity. Smith & Wesson began manufacturing Volcanics in 1854. A year later the company was reorganized into the Volcanic Repeating Arms. Co. Top bbl. flat is marked w/ two line "SMITH & WESSON"/"NORWICH. CT.". Left bbl. flat is marked "PATENT/FEB. 14TH. 1854". Attractive open vine scroll engraving on nearly all parts except for lever, trigger & bbl w/ floral accents. Serial number 153 G is stamped on the ring trigger lever & link. Bag style walnut grips. CONDITION: overall fine w/ metal surfaces having attractive balance gray patina. No marring to the side plates w/ snug fit to the frame. A few traces of original blue still remain in sheltered areas. Grips have been lightly sanded w/ an added coat of varnish. Crisp mechanics. Very good bright bore w/ distinct lightly worn rifling. (01-14828/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.

This factory engraved volcanic exhibits an attractive large open vine scroll engraving over nearly e...morevery facet of its brass receiver, serial numbered under grips 1761. The finger hole loading lever, bbl., hammer & bottom of the brass receiver has no engraving. The New Haven Arms Co. produced a total of 3300 firearms from 1857-1860, only 850 of these were No. 1 pocket. CONDITION: overall very good. The brass receiver has a beautiful balanced patina w/ crisp engraving. Side plate & screws show minimum handling. Bbl., lever & hammer have scattered dark old patinaed oxidation w/ light evidence of cleaning to the bbl. Both walnut grip panels have repaired cracks. Crisp mechanics. Missing mag. follower & spring. Near excellent bright shiny bore w/ sharp rifling. (01-14829/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $3,500-4,500.

Engraving & markings are crisp. Traces of silver finish remaining under grip panels. Slightly undersized refinished walnut grips w/ added varnish are numbered to the gun. HENRY MODEL 1860 NICKEL FINISHED LEVER ACTION

REPEATING RIFLE. Cal. 44 Henry Rimfire. S# 8088. Bbl. 24 1/4" octagon w/ integral 15 rd. magazine. Brass frame w/ late sloping contour forward of hammer. Action & buttpla...morete have very uncommon original nickel finish. "W" factory inspection stamping is found on lower tang between the lever latch & stock screw. Matching S#'s are found on top flat of bbl. behind rear sight, left side of lower tang, top channel of stock & inside of buttplate below lower screw hole. Right side of lower tang is stamped "J M LOGAN" in two places. Black walnut stock has additional unidentified marking in top tang channel behind S# that appears to be a wide stylized "Z" or "S". The nickel plated brass buttplate w/ trapdoor is of the later pointed heel style. Lower buttplate screw has washer to adjust head thickness & may be replacement. Rifle is fitted w/ sling swivels on left side of stock & mag. tube. Bbl. under loading gate is marked w/ assembly number "1110". The magazine cartridge follower is the later large variation w/ corresponding milled flats alongside the receiver slot. Front sight blade is brass w/ a downward slope toward the muzzle. Rear sight has a 900 yd. graduated leaf w/ retaining screw & V sighting notch in sliding bar. CONDITION: receiver & sideplates retain over 80% thinning nickel finish w/ carry areas having acquired a pleasing soft flat appearance w/ age. Buttplate retains 70% nickel finish w/ matching soft flat appearance. Lever & hammer show faint traces of case colored finish blending w/ smooth brown patina. Bbl., mag. tube, loading gate, swivels & rear sight finish have faded to a light brown/gray patina. Bbl. retains strong markings. Stock is sanded w/ pleasing varnish finish over scattered sm. dents & scratches. Left side of stock along top tang has added wood repaired chip. Unusually nice bore retains well defined rifling showing sm. spots of very light pitting. (01-15032/DS). ANTIQUE. $32,500-45,000.

Black walnut stock has earl...morey style brass trapdoor buttplate w/ rounded heel. Matching S#’s are found on bbl. behind rear sight, left side of lower tang, top tang channel of stock, lower buttplate screw & inside of buttplate below lower screw. Buttplate screws have early style contoured heads. Left side of stock & magazine are fitted w/ sling swivels. Front swivel has a 1” dia. iron ring. Bbl. underneath loading gate is marked w/ assembly No. “236”. Lg. style late cartridge follower has corresponding milled flats alongside the receiver slot. German silver front sight has half moon style blade profile. Rear sight has 900 yd. graduations w/ V sighting notches on sliding bar & top of folding leaf. Right sideplate is inscribed “J.C. Woodward / Comp. F. 25th Regt. Wis. Vol. / Battle of Resaca / Battl of Dallas”. Left sideplate is engraved w/ list of 5 Civil War battles from top to bottom, “Battle of Kenesaw Mt. / Battle of Decatur / Siege of Atlanta / Battle of Jonesboro / Siege of Saranak”. Previous research by J.R. LaRue relates the following information: "Thomas Canada Woodard was born Feb, 1837 and enlisted Aug 14, 1862 for 3 years and was mustered in Sept 14, 1862 as a Private in Company F, 25th Reg Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, His unit initially was assigned duty on the northwestern frontier at New Ulm, MN until Nov, 1862, at which time they were ordered to march about 300 miles to camp Randall, WI, arriving on Dec 13. They remained there until Feb, 1863 before traveling to Cairo, IL arriving on Feb 17. They were moved around the region from Missouri to Memphis to Louisiana until July 25 when they participated in the siege of Vicksburg. In Feb, 1864 they participated in the Meriden campaign, then removed back to Cairo, IL; to Waterloo, AL; marched to Decatur, Florence, Athens and Mooresville during March & April, 1864. In May they participated in the Battle of Resaca, GA and later in the Battle of Dallas, GA; June Battle of Kennesaw Mtn; in July Battle of Decatur, GA; July to Sept, 1864 battles and skirmishes around Atlanta and Jonesboro, GA; Dec 9 to Jan 3 skirmishes around Savannah, GA; Jan 13 to April 14, 1865 w/ Sherman;'s Carolina's campaign until the end of the war. The unit was mustered out June 7, 1865 and returned to Madison, WI on June 11, 1865. Mr. Woodard rose to the rank of full Sargent during his term of service in which he contracted typhoid fever. He died Nov, 1920 from complications of the typhoid fever." UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: later style 4 piece steel cleaning rod w/ integral eyelet & brass jag on opposite end. 3 Page hand written letter by George Mattis, author of "The Winchester Book". Details his examination of the rifle & how he determined it to be all original. Also includes numerous photocopied pages of information pertaining to the Civil War battles. CONDITION: brass action shows a mild patina blending w/ bright spots from past cleaning. Bbl., mag. tube, loading gate, rear sight, swivels & lever have a dark heavy brown patina appearance. Bbl. retains clear markings. Hammer has mottled gray appearance on side w/ faded blue along back radius. Stock has dark worn appearance showing numerous dents & handling marks w/ sm. chips around sling swivel & sm. crack extending from left side of buttplate. Peak of comb along left side forward of buttplate has added wood repaired chip. Bore has dark appearance w/ well worn intact rifling showing intermittent pitting. PROVENANCE: The Harry J. German silver front sight has half moon blade profile. Rear sight has 800 yard graduated leaf w/ retaining screw. “V” sighting notches are found at top & on sliding bar. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: repro. all steel 4 piece cleaning rod. CONDITION: brass action shows rounding on edges w/ numerous scratches & dents. VERY LATE WINCHESTER 1873 LEVER ACTION CARBINE.

Cal. 38 WCF. S# 720601B. Cody Firearms Museum records show that the last S# applied to the Model 1873 was S# 720610. This rifle shows numerous abnormalities consistent w/ end of production usage of parts on hand. Bbl. 20" w/ standard "WP" & circle "P" parts proofs located on right side at breech. Receiver has standard "WP" proof. Blued action has unusual flat headed lever screw. Full magazine. Integral front sight w/ Marbles folding leaf rear sight. Walnut forearm measures 7 7/8" overall length w/ 3/4" in front of band resembling short wood style forearms characteristically found on late production 94 carbines. Walnut stock has steel carbine or musket buttplate & 2 screw attached inletted sling swivel as normally found on muskets. Rifle may have been shipped w/out a dust cover. Dust cover currently on rifle may be a reproduction as it has 10 serrations on each side as opposed to the normal 11. Consignor purchased the rifle from a relative of the original owner over 20 years ago. Verbally related story intimates that rifle was purchased at a hardware store in the midwest in the early 1930's.
