AUSTRIAN BITTNER M1893, RARE REPEATER PISTOL

Lot # 2020 (Sale Order: 20 of 622)

Cal. 7.7mm. S# 50. The Bittner was one of the last and most recognizable of Europe’s full size repeater pistols. Designed by Gustav Bittner of Austria, the gun entered pr...moreoduction in 1896, just after the first semiautomatics of Bergmann and Borchardt made their debut. Attractive, well made, and chambered for the serious 7.7mm Bittner cartridge, the gun sold surprisingly well. Production numbers have been cited from a low of 500 to a high of nearly 3000. Part of the confusion relates to the visible markings under the barrel that reflect the pistol's sequential number in Vienna's proof house. The "real" SN is under the barrel where hidden by the forend. This one, reportedly serialed "50", was externally numbered 2630 and dated 1898. As true for all Bittners, it has a 6” largely octagonal barrel, round where it meets the receiver, with a matted top surface. Fitted with a fixed bi-concave front sight and a cursive rear sight, graded for 50, 100, and 150 meter increments. The top of the receiver is marked w/ the Austrian eagle. The right side of the receiver is marked “PATENT BITTNER” over the encircled GB (Gustav Bittner)/W trademark. Virtually all components of the pistol were color case hardened except the barrel that was originally browned and the sights that were fire blued. A checkered walnut insert is in the forend. Checkered walnut grips secured w/ a single transverse screw. At the base is a lanyard ring. CONDITION: VG original condition w/ the barrel retaining most of its original finish. The faded case hardening remains vibrant in protected areas. Finish on the sights is commensurate w/ balance of pistol. Comparable condition wood w/ staining and handling marks as photographed. ITALIAN CARCANO TROMBONCINO BOLT ACTION

Lot # 2023 (Sale Order: 23 of 622)

CARBINE WITH EXPERIMENTAL GRENADE LAUNCHER. Cal. 6.5mm Carcano. S# A9383. Super scarce Italian military M1928 Tromboncino, one of only a handful of such carbines in the U...moreS, made for close-up assault troops, wherein dual bolt-action receivers, jointly actuated by a single trigger, allowed function as a grenade launcher w/ follow-up rifle fire. The Tromboncino was designed in 1927 at the request of the Italian Army, who wanted a M91 TS w/ grenade launching capability. The Technical Branch's solution was to add a second receiver to the right side of the carbine. At the front was a firing chamber and launcher tube, linked to the primary action by a single trigger. To minimize weight and confusion, only one bolt was issued. The idea was to assault the enemy position w/ a series of grenades, then move the bolt to the primary receiver for advancing fire. Although theoretically sound, the weight of the carbine and short trajectory and limited burst radius of the grenades, limited the Tromboncino's acceptance. By 1932, just four years after its implementation, the carbines were decommissioned, most disassembled, their major parts used to rebuild other armament. Only a few of these guns remain in their original configuration. As per the M91 TS, the Tromboncino has a 17 3/4" bbl. & measures 36" overall. The rifle bbl. is fitted w/ a standard, drift adjustable front sight and a combination rear sight. At the base is a fixed battle sight, set for 100 meters, bracketed by a tangent-type sight graded from 6-15, adjustable via a spring loaded plunger. A separate set of optics, offset to the left, are used for grenade launching. The launcher's front sight protrudes from the left side of the stock, about 8" back from the muzzle; the rear viewer is mounted to the left of the rifle sight and has separate indicators of 1 (100), 1.5 (150), and 2 (200) meters. "Made in Italy" marked on the left side of the bbl. There are no other import marks. Unnumbered bolt as is correct for the Tromboncino. Manufacturer cartouche on the left side of stock, includes 1929 date, that is repeated on top of the bbl. Cleaning rod present. Full matching serial numbers appear on the stock, action, and all components of grenade launcher. Combination sight bar is #3111. Exact rifle is pictured in the Italian Small Arms book by Riccio, pages 100-101. CONDITION: very good original finish w/ wear and fading as one might expect from moderate field use. Most patina is on the right side of the trigger guard that has a small patch of pitting at the forward edge. Stock is in same general condition, w/ light oil staining, scattered handling marks, and a noticeable bruise along the left side of the receiver. Mirror bright bore w/ sharp rifling. Perfect, crisp, manual operation, both rifle and grenade launcher. One of the most unusual rifles ever used by the Italian military, only a handful extant w/ fewer than 20 in the U.S., rarely offered for sale. (19-392/ZAL). CURIO. $7,500-9,500.
